- Back in 2007 Anthony Randolph’s hype was up there with all the hyped young prospects in the nation. Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love, OJ Mayo, Mike Beasley… the 2007 class definitely had something special and in hindsight did produce 2 league MVPs and multiple NBA all stars. Anthony Randolph was the question mark of that class, mainly because it was difficult to project the one of a kind talent he had, as either it usually goes great and the prospect pans out, or it’s a bust and everyone was wrong in the end. There was no in between with Anthony Randolph, he was either going to revolutionize the power forward center position. With the final pick of the 2008 lottery, the Golden State Warriors selected the one and done project, hoping he turns out to be a young pillar to their future, and someday develop into a franchise, game changing talent in the front court. Little that they knew, that generational talent would actually come a year later in Wardell Stephon Curry. Some argue that Randolph’s most important skill for the Warriors was him not becoming what many thought he’d be, which made the Warriors continue rebuilding and getting guys like Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, the real pieces to the franchise’ future dynasty. That doesn’t happen if Anthony Randolph becomes productive enough in a timelier manner. Things happened fast for Randolph, problem is they never slowed down once he got to the NBA, as he found himself traded sooner that expected as a first round lottery pick, playing for 4 teams in just 6 years in the NBA. Anthony Randolph even became a Slovenian citizen amd played for their national team. For years he played with a teenage Doncic on RM and for Slovenia. Before the draft he was saying Luka was the most talented teenager he has ever seen. He said (you can look it up) once Luka puts it all together, he would damn near average a triple double in the NBA.
I remember that no knew who luka was. Dragic and Luka was killin it then randolph was rim running . Then luka destroyed tp9 and france i was like they won euro basket also teodosic tourched tp9 and france too. Then slovenia went missing on fiba idk why. Then divac said hill pick luka then the rest is history lukas in dallas

Overall he's had a good career and he's made millions! The guy was in the nba for about 6 years and now has played high level euro ball in Spain and Russia!

Cool vid. He was about to be my high school teammate in North Little Rock, AR. before leaving for Dallas, TX. He was killing during his sophomore tenure with North Little Rock wildcats, a powerhouse in Arkansas. Glad I been following his journey. It’s funny how in this era teams would know exactly how to use and develop him and could have likely been a #1 Pick in the draft. I will say this, it generally takes a couple seasons to get all-the-way-back from major injuries. Being in Europe there is far more development of one’s fundamentals because it is the norm to have the footwork and overall basketball IQ which in conjunction with his physical tools was the perfect environment. What he looked like playing for Slovenia in the World Games with Luka and Dragic was scary but already towards the end of his career.
I'd like to see you do one of these about a guy from Notre Dame named Tom Sluby. He was a 6' 6" forward from Gonzaga College High School in DC. He played a year or two for the Dallas Mavericks. He disappeared after that. What happened?

You can't talk about Anthony Randolph's NBA career without even mentioning Don Nelson. Getting drafted as a teenager to a team coached by Nelson was almost like a death sentence. I would argue that he wasn't treated fairly while at Golden State and without much to show for ended up being a journeyman. He became such a lethal 3pt shooter in Europe that I've been wondering how his career might've turned out if he showed that kind of shooting range while being in the league.

I mostly remember him for the ridiculous hype train he had in fantasy basketball going into year 2. I think I drafted him in the 2nd round or something crazy like that.

That first stunt is all too common but you can understand why. Calipari talked about how he never tries to convice his players to stay another year, even if they clearly could use the extra development time, because if they end up getting injured in college during that year their NBA dreams are most likely done.
