Rudy Fernandez Was Supposed To Be The Spanish Jordan! Stunted Growth

- The most difficult aspect of potential is when it doesn’t meet expectations. In basketball expectation can be the most cruel thing because it doesn’t take into context things like teammates, organization, coaching, scheme and timing. If the player in the end fall under what was expected of him for some time, he’s labeled a bust and type casted into the role of of one. This was basically Rudy Fernandez’ career in the NBA. Before then he was all everything in the Spanish and Euro leagues, winning numerous MVPs and championships. Rudy in Spain wasn’t just one of the guys though. He had a game seemingly tailor made for the NBA, because unlike what you’d expect from a European player, Fernandez was just as or more athletic than anyone in his 2007 NBA draft class. Pre NBA Rudy Fernandez was known for his high flying one foot takeoffs and finishes, catching back door lobs in the blink of an eye, taking no prisoners no matter how tall, their ethnicity or prior all world background. Before the 2007 draft many called him the Spanish Jordan. Not to be taken too serious because as history has shown, any European player with some hops and high flying moves they always use him as the torch bearer for the name the Next Jordan or fill in the blank is the fill in the blank Jordan. But the wrong situation, injury and more held him back from expectations. What Happened? Rudy Fernandez Was Supposed To Be The Spanish Jordan! Stunted Growth

In a different situation early on most importantly, I think Rudy would've shined in the NBA. But then again, can't hide from injuries.
Oh man, I LOVED Rudy! Playing as the Blazers in 2k with him and Brandon Roy, that was a super fun squad. Also a primary reason Spain was so nasty in Beijing in 2008.
Great video brotha how bout a video on ron mercer
SG do one on Victor olidipo
He was on the wrong team. Had he went to the Spurs perhaps he would have had a better career
Yep
Always felt that Rudy and Andres Nocioni were legitimate players and were heavily undervalued
I mean they were the same 3 and D type of player, expect Rudy had the leaping ability
Carlos Delfino also
@@kcjones713 carlos delfino was nice he was 3 n d but also had handle n a mean jumpshot with some hops
2:14 that's Pau Gasol on the bench.
Nocioni had them clamps. Literally the definition you love him if he’s on your team, you hate him if he’s not
96-97 Washington Bullets Stunted growth CHRIS WEBBER, JUWAN HOWARD, RASHEED WALLACE, BEN WALLACE, CALBERT CHANEY, TIM LEGLER ROD STRICKLAND, GEORGE MHURSHEN!!!!!!

2:14 that's Pau Gasol on the bench.
Even though his career in the NBA was short and didn't meet expectations, it's hard to not see it as legendary. He since has came back to Spain and has won plenty of hardware with Real Madrid and national team. Euroleagues, Eurocups, World champions and bronze and silver in the Olympics. He still plays to this day and is as clutch as it gets. He lost his bounce but is one of the most accomplished european players of all time. Also he came on a time where europeans were constantly overlooked. Rudy, El Chacho, Spanoulis, Navarro and others played couple seasons in NBA and were never respected. Came back to Europe and became legends. Nowadays you have a two time Serbian MVP, a two time Greece MVP, Doncic (future MVP) and future 1st round pick from France
Used to kill in 2k with Rudy 😂
😂
Me too, I would start him at SF along with Bayless, Roy, Aldridge and Oden
Man that lineup was mfs go to lol used to get my ass dropped off 😂😂
Good ol days
his jumpshot was automatic man the old days
I'm glad you spoke about how franchises ruin players. Portland could've developed Sebastian Telfair a lot better than they did. The NBA business is serious.
2:14 that's Pau Gasol on the bench.
I'm a native New Yorker and Telfair was good & would have been better on The Spurs or Lakers .
Loved his game and that Portland team was one of my favorites and had so much young talent.
NBA 2K legend. The Blazers were the coldest squad to use on 2K then
Man!!
Him on the blazers was unstoppable on 2k.
Ifykyk
Could you do a stunted growth on JR Rider?
The redeem team was 2008 not 2004
McMillan is the first and foremost reason he never lived up to expectations. That guy underutilized the shit outa Rudy, even during those first couple seasons where he showed so much promise. But after he went down with injurie, when he came back Nate barely ever played him, and when he did he was on such a short leash that it completely obliterated his confidence. He went from a confident and highly talented young player who had the skill and athletic ability to eventually become a star in the league - to an overly self-conscious and tentative basket-case who barely got playing time, all in a matter of a few seasons. Im a hardcore Blazers fan, and absolutely loved that team and thought he was gonna become a more athletic Genobli or Brent Barry. Which is impressive seeing as how Barry specifically - is hands down one of the most athletic white guys in NBA history, even won a dunk contest in 96 - if i remember correctly). He had the shot, that both Barry and Geno had, while being quicker and more explosive to boot.
Back then Portland really underutilized/squandered a significant amount of talent back during the late 2000's and early-mid 2010's. There were a number of guys who legit who legit woulda/coulda prolly blossomed into stars if they had been on damn near any other team in the whole fuckin league. I think Rudy is the best example of this, but there was also the case of Nic Batum. Though he at least had a decent career, averaging double figs a few times, recognized as being one of the best "x-factors" in the league back in his prime, So his career wasn't nearly as tragic no doubt, but he was legit a better all-around player than Rudy Fern was - as he had an even better outside shot, better pull-up mid-range jumper, was almost as athletic, a little better at taking his man off the dribble and driving to the hoop, good post moves - seeing as how he physically speaking he was a slightly smaller version Kevin Durant, (which is why he , despite being skinny, his length a great post moves allowed him to dominate pretty much any wing in the league), and was also an excellent passer!!Those parts of his game though were only slightly better than Rudy's, there was however one thing that he was head-and-shoulders above Rudy was: and that was the fact that he was a ball-hawk perimeter/wing on-ball defender. It's still pretty shitty knowing that, despite being a solid role player, Batum easily had the skill/talent to have become an All-Star level go-go scorer. At the end of the day - the combination of him, like Rudy, being both far too passive offensively and felt uncomfortable being an assertive scoring threat, but most importantly were both grossly misused by both McMillan and then Stott, were the reasons that prevented them from ever becoming a star player.
JailBlazers ruined Dražen Petrović as well
@@meekmeads Drazen was the shit, but he was way before the "Jail-Blazer" era of late 90's to early 2000's. When he was at Portland - it was like in '89, '90, or some time round then. And though they certainly did underutilize him back a little bit, but the fact is when he was there - Portland was stacked with guys about as good - or even better than Drazen at that point of his career. They simply didn't have enough PT to go around, after so much of it being for prime Clyde and prime Jerome Kersey - (with Clyde being one of the top 3 or 4 greatest SG's in NBA history and then Jerome was/is one of the most underrated players in Blazer history and was legit one of the top 15 or so SF's in the league during that time period).
Plus there was Ainge and Cliff Robinson, who - though they played at other positions primarily, (for Cliff it was PF and with Ainge it was at PG), both still shared some of their PT while filling in as a wing. And since both of them were great scorers off the bench at the time, (with Cliff also being a phenomenal defender of both PF's and wings), which cut into the amount of looks at the basket that Drazen would get whenever he'd actually get playing-time.
@@8301TheJMan Point is everyone Blazers drAft tend to have their careers ruined and have resurgence, after they are traded. If you are a rookie drafted by them, you should immediately ask for a trade 🤣😂🤣😂
I call them the CursedBlazers
@@meekmeads That's def true for plenty of dudes, as a diehard Blazer fan my whole life - they sure like to make it difficult to continue being one for very long lol
I Remember That Alley Hoop He Threw When He Was With The Nuggets 🔥
Rudy was my man in the old 2Ks from 09-12 bro had one of the smoothest jumpers in the league and was dunking on people in Portland
Great video. You should do a video on the short comings of Buddy Hield and how the Kings screwed him over and stunted his growth.
Lies
I remember when Nate Robinson would talk trash about Rudy before the dunk contest in a promo.
Idgaf him and Broy were wet in 2k. Those Portland teams were low key fire if you know how to play defence
Illl
Carlos Delfino was more athletic than Rudy and lasted longer in the NBA. He was closer to MJ as South American. Consider doing his story dude had some Dog in em
Delfino was nice fr
He got traded right after he got drafted at pick 24. That was a red flag 🚩 right there.
Stunted Growth was one my guys during the pandemic and I'm glad to see you still making these videos fam .
Rudy was Spanish league star who couldn't adapt , and Portland didn't help . In Europe they play less games and the competition isn't as good .
Rudy was athletic... for a Euro hooper but his body wasn't used to ALL 82 GAMES vs high level comp the numbers don't lie .
He went back home and shined & I'm glad for him . Great video and thanks for all the 🔥🔥 content ✌🏾
Use to kill with him on 2k 😂🔥
Many teams are partially responsible for ruining players growth through mismanagement, incompatible schemes, and bad coaching/front office. Where a player gets selected in the draft I think, is THE most crucial factor for any player coming into the league.
Rudy was really good as far as I could recall. Hope he was dealt with the Spurs.
Shawn marion, Mehmet okur, emeka Okafor, Jermaine O'Neal, stak 5...please 🙏
Rudy was my guy. Him and Brandon Roy are two of my favorite Blazers ever. Can’t wait to watch this!
sergio llull is a must now
Rudy definitely wasn't utilized right. He killed the men's Olympic team, with Kobe doing his best to shut him down. Spent some time in the NBA but struggled. Then left for overseas, only to resume ballin' out. Most guys leave the league and struggle because they can't play. Not so with Rudy. Would have loved to have seen him with a coach that truly knew how to utilize unique talented ala Coach Pop, Don Nelson...
I recommend you do a stunted growth on Joe Smith out of Maryland. He was the #1 pick in 1995 draft. In my opinion he was a total bust. His career 10.9 pts and 6.3 rebounds. I would love hear your perspective on his career.
That's disappointing for a number one pick, but I am scratching my head how someone who for a 16 year career in the NBA averaging over 10 points a game can be called a total bust. That's not what a bust is
@AK 74 That is a bust you are drafted to be the # 1 pick. Being the # 1 overall. You should be a piece that starts to turn the franchise around. Joe Smith did none of that. By his 3rd year he was journey man. His second year he average 18.5 ppg . And that was highest he ever average. If you are the 1# overall pick, and you are a backup on your 3rd team in 4 years. Yes he is a bust! He was in the same draft class as Kelvin Garnett, Rasheed Wallace, Jerry Stackhouse!
Syracuse's backcourt of Lawrence Moten and Micheal Lloyd next
His growth wasn't stunted he went to another league and balled out. Sometimes we get tricked into thinking just because someone doesn't work out in the NBA that they didn't have a great career. There are other leagues with just as good of talent as the NBA
His game reminded me of Brent Barry
Thanks
Love this man in 2K
Have you done one on Tyus Edney ?
You should do one on Lester Hudson
Wesley Matthews next vid? Super underrated and undrafted solid 3 & D player. Borderline all star in his best years with Portland before he got hurt.
I always like Rudy Fernandez game. But the combination of injuries and not being in the right situation especially in Portland held him back. Portland didn't have a good track record with forgein players another example is patty mills. Rudy did show promise especially in his rookie campaign. But I'm glad he found success in Europe. I would loved to have seen play for the spurs.
Portland had a terrible reputation with all players. Look at the Dame situation
He was definitely good a lot players like him are glues
This Fella was a Jabroni 🏀
😂😂😂
Do one on Matt Bonner, the greatest New Hampshire basketball player ever.
The red rocket!
You should do Anthony Randolph
Rudy is a legend in Spain tho, has so many trophies
Do a stunted growth video on Bobby Hurley
Too bad he could've stay in Phoenix. Yes they had Steve Nash, Shawn Marion, and Amare but they played fast and I think he still could've gotten a decent amount of shots and he had athleticism so would've been able to capitalize on that with Phoenix's run and gun style back then.
Portland my team..but that's where careers got to die....their organization is terrible...
Raef Lafrentz Drew Gooden or Danny Manning next ?
Would love to see Toby Bailey
My boi Rudy
Do Aaron Brooks
Ramon Sessions next?
dam I remember Rudy
Rudy was a Great player idk why he wasn't given the keys like luka
Do Kendall Gill next
One of my favorite International Baller
And still killing it in the Euros
Spanish ginobli. If he went to a team like the spurs or Miami heat or Orlando magic he would have had more success
Do Justice Winslow next
Do ace law
2k9 Rudy Fernandez was a bucket getter 😂
OMG I was about to post the same.
Don’t get me started
How about Pat Ewing Jr…
Do one on Jan Vessely....... I think that's how you spell it
Brian Big Country Reaves or Ray Tractor Taylor.
Rudy was the 2k9 goat
Do Q Richardson do rip Hamilton Chris kaman Luke ritenour from Seattle
Nicolas Batum
Do Ricky Rubio
They used to have Fernandez cheese on 2k. I remember him
Wrong Team.Wrong Time
He was the truth for Portland !!!!!
Joe Alexander
🤝🏿🇪🇸
I used to cook bulls with Rudy in 2k
Didn't they choose him over Russell Westbrook for dunk contest?
Xavier Henry
He doesn't seem very athletic to me from the clips. He seems kind of slow moving. Also the most he ever had in the nba was like 10 points. The reason he did so good in the european league is because the league competition is not as good.
I think you're going on a long stretch. Who tf compared him to Jordan.
Right and was they on the brown or the white?😂
MJ is much taller and has handles but Rudy is more versatile, skilled and has more international experience than MJ.
Lucca ain't no killer. No killer has such shitty defensive skills.
Cover euro basketball and spanish league etc stunted growth. Wnba
I'm sorry the only Latin/Euro person that comes even close to Jordan is Manu Ginobili... Facts
Ginobili isn't a "latin euro", he's from Argentina ( South America). what the hell is that for you? Rudy is a Spanish from SPAIN! EUROPE! latin he says... That thing doesn't even exist but all of you American, repeat it the time. It's a wrong concept...
Man Carlos Arroyo story is more motivating than Rudy's. 😂
Arroyo was nice but not on Rudy's level as a player and it showed in their European careers where they played more
2K9 Legend!! Lmao
Maybe Mark Price, Terrel Brandon, Brad Dougherty. All Cleveland guys lol. Not a Cavalier fan
My daughter and I share CZcams so I can keep an eye on her content
I was of a fan of rudy's game ......i
Sherron collins jr giddens Martell webster travis outlaw john salmons jeff foster austin crochere marcus banks allen ray. U might have done some ofbthese just random off the top my head
Boy was nice
Should've went to the spurs
Eddie house
Sound like he just need more minutes
2 time world champion so that video does not make sense
Spanish Jordan 😂😂. There's only one goat-MJ
First
I know jokic just beat lebron
An the whites just beat the blacks (call a spade a spade)
But man this is generous
Dude was a chucker
Often criticised for his low I.Q. Play
An shooting way too many 3’s
Dude was like a worse Nick young
An he was chucking decently but when it dropped below league average he was out the league
Dudes biggest problem was his shot selection
He had very little mid range game in a era which was a slow iso heavy era
An wasn’t known for elite level lockdown defence
Being a great acceleration jumper is one thing
But foot speed and in between game is very different
If he was in the league now
Much more value
But dudes like him suffered whilst dudes like luis scholar(I don’t remember the spelling)
Luizs isn’t giving you
16ppg 8rpg in today’s league but we wouldn’t paint his success as being due to bias or unfair management
It might be true
Like in some world where he didn’t play for the teams I supported an didn’t watch him shoot every time he got the ball
But I watched this dude burn out
WTF
Soon your gona have micheal jordan on your stunted growth 😂😂😂🤦♂️ u jus hate on every player because u failed at ball so it makes u feel better
Great player. He faced bias in NBA due to him being European.
The Spanish Jordan ? Lol
