He Was Supposed To Be The Next Yao Ming! Yi Jianlian Stunted Growth

- In 2007, a 6’11 power forward that could post up, step out on the wing and create and had a fluidness in his game Yao Ming never had and mirrored what the NBA superstar looked like at the time. JianLian was supposed to be a much bigger star than Yao Ming ever was. Of course the NBA was excited, because to have a star player from a rich and plentiful country like China, meant broader exposure and engagement, a loyal fanbase that if they like you they always overly support you, and much more money dumped into the economy and the league. Having a strong Chinese representative is beneficial for any business outside of China, but to have Jianlian at 20 years old, who was hyped to be an even better, more marketable Yao Ming, had the league licking its chops and everyone tuned in to see Yi take over the NBA. Yi not only didn’t translate, he was one of the biggest NBA bust of all time. He Was Supposed To Be The Next Yao Ming! Yi Jianlian What Happened? Stunted Growth

Will there ever be another Yao Ming?
Thats what 2k is for
Speaking of Yao Ming can you do vid on him JC
Victor Wembanyama looks like the next Yao Ming
Yao Ming actually trained very hard and learned english. He adapted the USA culture very well. Yao was at his peak when he got injured vs Lakers in playoff. I truely believe Yao was a better player when he played against Dwight Howard everytime.
I honestly think the differences between how basketball is played and taught in China and the NBA game is too great at the moment. There's been occasional Chinese players in D1 programs but they never really amount to much and often head back to China before their eligibility is up. It will take a VERY special Chinese player to come back to the League and make an impact.
"And dude, Chinamen is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian American, please." - Walter Sobchak
Whoever that was at the Draft comparing Yi to 50 Cent at the beginning is just bizarre lmao
🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂
🤦🏿♂️😂😂
He was trying to be cool and say Yao was old school Jazz and R&B and Ye was new school Hip hop 50 cent ect but he looked more like a old white guy trying to be cool by showing you he knows the names of the current rappers. It was just as cringey then bro 😂😂
Dude was out of line.
This is a GOOOD ONE! Dude was nice yo!!! I used to use him in 2K like crazy!
He developed into an insane 99 overall PF on my 2k franchise lol the perfect 4 man in the modern game, with inside/outside ability along with a lot more.
It's interesting to see how those things play out in an alternate reality.
@@lefty206 it's really not interesting.
@@dsg3053 what's the point of your comment? To argue like an 8 yr old kid?
This man said chinaman, ain’t that a derogatory term
If your ashamed of being from china
@@mikehawk7220 It has nothing to do with being or not being ashamed. It has been used by racists
in marginalizing a group of people for over a century. It must be nice to never experience unfounded
hate or racism in your life.
We need Austin Daye Stunted Growth, that dude was dub the next KD
Agreed dude was a monster
LOL I know you didn't mean "Chinaman" in a derogatory way, like Yi's a man from China, just like Giannis Antetokounmpo is a Greeceman whose dad is a Nigeriaman.
Both of Giannis parents are/were Nigerian not just his father (who's deceased now)..
But Chinaman is an obsolete term Europeans and white Americans used to derogatorily call the Chinese, doesn't quite have the sting of "nigger" but it's not a term anyone should be using
😂😂😂 yao did look like a normal Chinese man in the face but with a nephilim body
That was the first mistake of people IMO-there was only ever gonna be one Yao. Seems like legit hoops prospects from Asia are hard to come by, at least in terms of NBA fit
We need a Perry Jones Stunted Growth!!
He already made one
I thought he was going to be a beast in the league.
"Too much rain touching his body!" I'm dead bro! 😂 💀
I remember Wang Zhi Zhi. He dominated China and Asia before Yao Ming did. He ended up being a stretch 5 in the NBA. The difference was Yi was a lottery pick and hyped up to the moon.
After leaving NBA and Yao retiring from basketball, Yi was basically a demi god in FIBA games
He was putting up great stats during those games
You really see how good a player is when they have the greenlight and playing free
Yi will forever be a legend in my eyes , longtime net fan here and I remember when he was trading buckets with KD back in 09 . Was a glimmer of hope in possibly the worst season in nba history
How is yi a legend ? Even in your eyes, how?
@@GDCDGC he almost led the 09 nets to a win . Quite an accomplishment
Great video JC, You should do J.J. Redick, Mike Dunleavy & Shelden Williams next. They were three Duke College stars that were so hyped up by ESPN commentators but never lived up to the expectations. At least Redick played 15 seasons but Williams's career was a huge disappointment and nothing much to say about Dunleavy 😕
Thank you
JJ was a late bloomer (dude had essentially his breakout season with the Clippers when he was 29, tho you can say he started his prime at 28 since he averaged 14ppg in 2012-2013 despite playing for 2 different teams), and at least he can say that he played his role well and that he was well respected. Williams, as you said, was a disappointment however and Dunleavy was irrelevant
Dunleavy had a soild career just dealt with alot of injuries not too mention played under horrible coaches
Great video! Yi was my dude! Oh just a heads up you many want to edit this video. “Chinaman” is very much a racial slur these days.
LOL! I caught it too. Jeremy Lin is my favorite Chinaman.
@@skiprockjr.6881 well Jeremy Lin is from Taiwan so…
@@33greenleaf Jeremy Lin is American. He was born in Torrance California.
Oh, I see the confusion. His background is Asian so he must be a foreigner smh.
@@timothy4772 American by nationality. Chinese by ethnicity. I wasn’t talking about his citizenship.
He’s ethnically Chinese. Pointing that out isn’t a slur.
@@33greenleaf My apologies.
Usually the moment someone is named the next anything, they end up not even reaching the compared potential. I think the closest was Kobe which even then he wasn’t Truly on MJs level. I honestly never understand why the media has to hype up a prospect that early. You won’t get another LeBron Steph or KD for a long time. Like stated before at best you’ll get something close.
Been waiting for this one
Actually requested this video recently not knowing it was already made. SG was cool enough to let me know personally. You a real one SG. Respect 🙏
Billion ppl in China and he never made a All Star Game. That speaks tones. But he wasn't a bust. He just wasn't the next Yao Ming. He averaged 12 a game his 3rd season. That is not a bust .
Absolutely, Love your videos brother!!!!👊🏾🥂
I feel like the same is happening with Deni. Obviously, he is absolutely there mentally and competitiveness wise, but certain holes in his game that were even obvious at the time prevented him from being the next Luka or even Batum
Thank J.C. - I’ve been wanting this vid for 2yrs!
Right on time my guy..I was jus getting bored!!
I think the Bucks seen Yao’s body deteriorating and seen Yi’s injury and understood that wasn’t a risk they wanted to take plus you see that translated to the development of Giannis’s body.
Not even the case because Yaos body and injury was totally different from Yis.
Any truth to the reports that he was actually 23 and not 19 when he was drafted?
Yi Jianlian is a legit 7 footer.
He really said China Man. 😂😂😂😂
Hahahaha... and he said it more than once
He hasn't replied to any of the posts here calling him out on it, so it's likely that he doesn't care. It's just falling in line with the stereotype that a certain group of people believe that they can't be racist. Oh well.
Yo jc!It looks like your growth was stunning also.. you're turning around skyhook looks like a turnaround baby toss up.. I would send that s*** to the concession stands.
Sure was, but you ain't seeing me 😅
Yes! Finally an episode on Chairman Yi!
Why do you keep saying "china man".....that's odd
This is a good one!!!!!!!
Love the vidz! Love to see one on Todd Day, Eric Murdoch, Lionel Simmons, Walt Williams, Stacey Augmon, Steve Smith had that bad knee injury second year but reshaped his game and had a good career, Dana Barros, Willie Burton, Clarence Weatherspoon
he was sick in career mode in 2k13 he would hit threes and everything
As a Bucks fan, it definitely would’ve helped our franchise if he were the next Yao Ming 😒
Yi had lots of moments of greatness and I honestly felt like he was on his way there but injuries and poor worth ethic(I'd say his trainers are solely to blame for this) pretty much stopped it from happening.
Those old bucks jersey’s looked hideous. That rebrand was necessary
Yoa Ming was just too nasty bro its a shame yi got compared to him he could never live up to that
He's hip hop he's 50 cent 🤣🤣
wahhhhh that had me dying
Great video, You should breakdown Wang ZhiZhi. He came before Yao and had a stronger CBA run than Yi. Wasn’t bad in the NBA wasn’t too good either.
I remember this guy.. Totally dominated the asian games.. Cant remember if it was fiba asia or whatever.. But it was definitely a basketball event between asian countries
What’s wrong with your breathing? 🤣 good video as always
still waiting on that obi toppin apology
Yo called him a chinaman 😂😂😂 damn dawg
Do you have Yi Jianlian workout video with chairs?
China removed it?
He might be older than what he says he is
Not trying to nit-pick here, but Yao was the leading vote getter for starting center in the West on in-arena American ballots. In 2003, Shaq was injured, but lost the spot to Yao by about 200,000
I don't think any chinese player will ever be bigger than Ming,, hí impact was legendary and he is the blueprint for chinese players
Always enjoyed your contents, can you please edit this video out. You should never used the term “China man” it was very racially insensitive. I hope just a mistake
Do you say that when your people are on TV in China in Blackface?? 🤔
@@necrophagiakc my people? Two wrongs don’t make a right. Any racial slurs or racial insensitive terms should not be allowed
Oh no, words in an order that some people are offended by 😱😱😱😱
@@andykuo336 So do you say something?
@@andykuo336 your people because you're definitely Asian and Chinese
Please do a video about Eddie House
Hey man, I simply want to stare a few facts.
Fact #1- You are an incredible, well spoken, incredibly intelligent and one of a kind.
Fact #2-As you have spoken many times, talent always rises to the top. You can't teach it, can't learn it, can't duplicate it. You can do one of two things. First, you ignore it, dismiss it,and forget it's existence. Or, take that talent, grab it by the horns, and become greater than your imagination. That's a destiny highway that dead ends into either right or left.
Fact #3- I at one time was a state champ running the point in AAAA, which was highest in my day. I'm 48 years old,a diabetic, epileptic standing at a mere 6'1 190lbs. I can still dunk when all of the planets and stars align but I can still frustrate the hell out of millennials with a jumper sweeter than a sundae on a hot Sunday! I played against Vince Carter ( only 2 years thank God) but my arch nemesis was Chucky Atkins (Evans HS) all 4 damn years. That's all in the past.
Man,thank you for your incredible and captivating videos! I await each one with pregnant anticipation lol.
Wished Yi would have work out for NJ nets. He showed flashes though.
I was pissed when they traded RJ for him
In retrospect, Yi was the most athletic (run and jump athlete) 7 footer to come out of Asia in the last 40 years, and he still didn’t reach expectations in the NBA.
Just shows how hard it is to get a good NBA prospect out of the Asian gene pool.
And I don’t know if I can fully agree with the part about his lack of work ethic, I think he just didn’t train with the right skills trainers or didn’t have the natural basketball instincts (a common problem among Chinese big men) to fully diversify his skillset (despite the versatility he only had a few basic moves in each category and relied too much on being the most athletic guy on the court in China) Yi is known to be an absolute gym rat, always lifting in the weight room, after his CBA return, and that helped him continue to dominate with raw athleticism, winning multiple CBA titles and guarding American big men in the process, all the way to him turning 35, after which he tore his Achilles’ tendon in his last finals win.
I completely agree with you !!
Yo JC can you do one on Jason richardson
What’s with the breathing noises on this one G?
Is that a Melo slander? 😂

That Carmelo clip is crazy. And people think it’s disrespectful when you say he, isn’t in a conversation with Kobe, wade, bron.
Jc you should do your stunted growth
Thank you for your share about Yi. But I believe that the man who is successful in any league deserves respect. At least Yi tried to chase his dream even if he failed and definitely he has made great achievements in CBA. He supported the Chinese national team for so long and no one in China now could reach his level ,his spirit regardless of Yao.(which is sad) Like Yao, he is also the hero of Chinese.
Attractive “Chinaman”? Lmao! What a thing to say in the modern world. Im not offended but I am a bit shocked to hear that.
I always wanted to know about the nba career of this guy.. Back then, I cant remember the specific year, he was roasting the fiba asian cup..
Do Marcus Liberty next please.
Dude just got a building named after him at Nike. He’s alright
Damn I remember him!!!!
Cliff Alexander
I remember this guy from 2015 on the t wolves dude was a dawg in my career back then 😂 good times throwing dimes to this guy
In 2k TWolves would be dominate team for some reason.
Loved Yi as a Bucks fan. I was a young lad when the Bucks drafted him. So bummed when they traded him,:but I totally understand why.
Same here, dude had his moments...coulda been worse, at least he wasn't effin Joe Alexander
Yi used to give me good minutes off the bench in 2k
Yi is like that kid from the movie rebound 😂 yeah I said it.
“China man look” kinda unnecessary man
Good video, imagine being deemed the next Yao at 20??? Maybe we wouldve had a different Yi without the expectations or him coming in as a free agent at 22 instead of a teenager.
kendall marshall
I've been waiting for this episode. Also just use Chinese prospect and omit the Chinaman term, even if you mean no offense. And yes Yi was a soft, tweener who didn't possess the abilities required to stay in the NBA.
Can you do a Stunted Growth feature on Jonathan Hargett please
8:32 Why you trolling this man so hard LMAO
Wow
please do Jonny Flynn stunted growth ! 🙃
Used to kill with him on 2k9 association mode
i thought that jianlian would be an all star.
He was another Todd Marinavich JC a total hype job. No real talent. All Hat and no cattle. I don't think there will ever be another Yao. Great job as usual.
He wasn’t supposed to be like Yao in any way other than they’re both from China
You have a very smooth voice sir. But you should start singing while reading the lyrics to the song to help you pronounce your words more clearly. I love your channel sir have a great day.
Speaking of the Milwaukee Bucks, can you do a video about Joe Alexander ,the 8th pick of 2008?
You gotta be a old head lol
@@reythomas8612 2008 wasn't really that old. Maybe 90's and below.

Yao said it himself - that yi jian lian has the potential to be better than him.
