You just use iso with the sprues from the minis*
Much prefer videos like this over the speed paint/gimmicky videos the algorithm wants. I like to just see a dude having fun, painting his minis. Keep up the great work, love your videos, man!
"Savagely ridiculed by all the other warhammerers" very true!!
I'm painting minis for 15 years now and I played exactly 4 matches.
Classic miniature artist.
I'm the same way. And even though I paint 100 times more than I play, I'm still not interested in painting stuff I don't have a gaming purpose for. Can't make sense out of it, but I'm happy.
@chadkittleson5447 I'm the same, been doing it 8 years and unless it was part of the same army etc I wouldn't bother. Finally started playing in the past year and yeah that made life easier
@@chadkittleson5447completely agree, I cannot find value in painting something that can't be put into the game. I play so few games I'm concerned about a non recognisable model being rejected by my theoretical opponent. Bad mindset, especially for practice/improvement, but sadly here I am.
That is the entire problem with the hobby.
Always a nice day when a Ninjon vid drops.
John, please keep this up! MANY of my favourite content creator mini painters seem like they aren't even painting minis anymore. I just wanna watch someone with sick skills paint a mini from start to finish. Please keep it up! Especially the colour palette box style video!!!!
Regarding always going one step brighter with highlights: One thing I always try to keep in mind is that my painting lights are WAY brighter than display/tabletop lights. So often what might look almost over the top under the painting lights really won't pop nearly as much under tabletop lights. When in doubt, I'll step away from the painting table and let my eyes adjust to normal lighting and then take another look at the model to see how I feel about the highlights.
Great point, and good tip. I often can be found, seemingly looking lovingly into the eyes of my current mini in every room of the house.
@@cfnfl What do you mean "seemingly"??? 😂🤣😂
Loving the longer shots of this episode! It's super enlightening to just watch the process and brushwork.
The part of the process I keep finding myself stuck at is how to choose the undertone/shadow color for any project. I never would have thought to use such a vibrant red.
You can get books on colour theory and there are tools online that generate complementary colours etc. hope that helps
@@carlstanford7607 that actually does help, a ton. Thank you! So at its most basic, I should be looking towards the complimentary color of my mid tone for my shadows/base color?
@@dennisruddy237 it all depends on the vibe you're out to achieve. Color theory isn't a set of rules, just a tool to find an end product you're going for. But don't worry about color theory too much, just focus on what looks good
@@dennisruddy237 You can use a general rule of thumb as a starting point for a number of different painting styles. Complementary colors create the most contrast possible using just the colors themselves (others include different varnish finishes, different saturation values like a nice vibrant blue vs a pale blue, etc.) and I wouldn't use them as the shadow to the mid tone unless I wanted something like a synthwave color scheme, or to go for something kinda like OSL to tie stuff together. My advice for something simple and basic is a darker version of the mid tone. Navy blue into ultramarine blue into a sky/powder blue for the highlight for example. Another example would be brown into orange into yellow. These are called monochromatic colors I think. Ninjon has this cool video where he paints one of those 40k space dwarves, whatever they're called, using a different artists' style and you'll see something similar to this skaven where the upper layers are a variety of colors that feel like 'normal' painting but literally all the shadows are some shade of blue/purple/magenta.. it gives an almost OSL like feel, like with this skaven, where it sort of unites the colors on the mini and would do the same across the entire army. Like the other guys said, color theory is great but it isn't a manual on what you should be doing.. especially since there's also a number of different types of complementary styles like split compliments or triads - I use color theory for inspiration or as a tool when I'm trying to achieve something specific.
Paint more skaven in videos until they are all done. Then release a painting skaven movie. The spiffing Brit tells us this is the best way to beat the algorithm
Spearhead truly is a painters blesseing. This is by far the best army painting ive seen, from you, so far. Really feels like every model gets the attention it deserves this way and itll be such an accomplishment when its fully done. Fuck the algorithm this is great. I'd love more videos like this
As a person who enjoys the hobby part and the playing part of miniature games, skirmish and small scale games are such a blessing. Being able to just kick back and spend time making those 15 models look absolutely the best I can, but still knowing I get to play with a fully painted force at the end of it is such a great thing.
@@Matt-jp6if exactly!
Sounds like it's time to show how you take a simple army paint job to a top tier level and still keep it in line with the army with a Gray Seer or a Clawlord
Wow . This is exactly the kind of video I have been hoping to find. I will be watching and re-watching all videos like this many times over the next few months. Thank you!
I'm starting a Cities of Sigmar and I'm taking a lot from your journey with your spearhead. Doing a test model for color and process, thinking about composition of my basing and taking my time to give each piece the attention it needs to really shine on the battlefield have all been amazing tips! Thank you! I can't wait to see your Grey Seer painted!
Dude its AMAZING to see how your style and skill have progressed over the last couple years - your process has really become a "system" and watching the model transform in these videos is incredible
man the warpstone contrast, was like bam.. done. loved it. love skaven. Good job! looks awesome
Awesome video! I look forward to your videos every week and you're my favorite channel on CZcams! Keep up the fantastic content, and thank you for helping me keep motivated and improve my painting every week!
Watching your videos really helps me keep up momentum on my giant Tyranids army.
Im glad youre going for the more sustainable approach and as you said not chasing the speed painting as much. Always a pleasure to watch
Really enjoying the slower take on painting up the army. Please keep it up with the skaven painting. Would love to see your full take on that half of the box
That look so awesome! It is such a natural feel to have the red undercoat with the fur and it looks just right! Great great job.
Love your paint Style. Not making one speed paint video after another, but showing something new and interesting most of the time! ❤
I just love the army building and painting!!! Another beautiful paint job 😊😊😊
I am really grateful you are doing this series of videos
Looks awesome, love the detail explained for the methods used.
I am always excited when another Ninjon video drops!
Gotta say I really appreciate the simplicity and yet detailed paint guide. I know, for example, you could have done what so many CZcamsrs do and paint the metal all in NMM. But I just can’t do it. It always looks shocking. But your guide helps me to paint in a way that is my ability and my models look good afterwards. Thanks! 👍👍 (entertaining too 😂)
Loved this, can't wait to see the completed clan.
Love this painting video more then the speedpainting ones! Great job👍
Nicely done matey
Thanks for this man, I've pre-ordered my box and I was a bit worried that I was lacking a strategy for paint scheme.
This has given me a good leg up, and I'm still using your smash chop for the leviathan box I bought to practice on.
loving this series john!
Very nice! Thanks Ninjon!
Mooore raaaaats!! I'm enjoying the release of the new edition way too much, and I think the real reason is this. A bunch of awesome painters and quite a few of my favorite artists and content creators sharing their takes on the box, their armies, etc.
Thanks for the video, the rat ogor looks amazing!
Looks so good. Nice job man!
At first I was like What? Vibrant red undertones? But it works. It works a treat. I love your style and this model turned out especially gorgeous.
Painted my first mini last week!
Dude that model looked awesome!
Great to see some of these techniques coming together!
You should paint the Grey Seer next! Show us how magical these rats are
This is very cool, the Karandras contrast paint really makes those warpstone chunks pop against the reddish skin.
Love the music in the episode today😊
That Rat Ogre looks crisp! I was a bit skeptical with the beginning of the paint scheme but it came out really tight! We need more rat ogres in our lives.
I don’t think I’ve played a full Warhammer game in 2 years, but I DO paint daily! It’s always exciting to see the new models/model refreshes! Great video as usual Jon! ❤
Idea for next video: The latest Battletech kickstarter has begun arriving for backers. It's something different than you usually do, it's at a different scale. A video on depicting the size of a five story robot at 6mm scale would be great.
Thanks Ninjon.
Great video! When you put the first two colors on it, I was super skeptical but you crushed it!
As for what to paint next, pick the thing that’s the biggest hurdle for your in the remaining models and get it! :)
I love these paint an army to a high quality video. I am doing the same thing with Daughters of Khaine for AOS right now getting ready for the new edition! I actually found a new way to highlight gold and will likely go back and add that into the other models.
I love watching these videos, they are so ASMR. And I get to learn to be a better painter ..win/ win.
Another awesome paint job mate keep up the good work Love watching your videos
Boo to the algorithm 😂 - more of this please. It's helping get my motivation back to painting. Thanks!
man this is great work
Great video! This is so helpful to my next step of painting my new add on to my rattos
You are quite simply, a Genius.
This and the last skaven video has really inspired me to put in that extra work in my next army.
I usually try to paint up my minis as fast and efficient as possible, which is not a Very enjoyable experience, nor am i proud of my work.
Thanks for the Milanote stuff, will try to use to get all my proyects together. Because right now i have a fuck ton of them and i could use some order since my book with the notes is all over the place right now.
As a Skaven vet I kinda love the pink rats vs my leathery rats
I can’t wait to see your take on the ratling gun
Very well done, that's got to be the best Rat Ogre paint job I've seen yet.
Great stuff man 👍👍
Loving the aos content! Can’t wait to get my box
Loving the Skaven vids, planning on using yours as a base guide when my Skaventide box comes in. I would absolutely LOVE to see your take on the entire army. And if you are looking for something else to do I would love to also see your take on the Stormcasts, not necessarily the entire army, but a few units would be really nice!
Basically, I'm looking for a Skaventide guide lol.
watching this while painting my spearhead is perfect
Comment for the mighty algorithm
For the algorithm
All hail
As someone who plays on average, 2 games of aos a week, and plays warcry and underworlds somewhat regularly as well, I always find it fascinating the amount of people in this hobby that don't play much.
I’d love to see the warpblaster, mostly because it’s the model most different from those you’ve painted, and would be the most interesting to see your approach.
I've got my solution for paint on mud, its a 250 ml thing of Daler Rowney simply acrylic matt medium, and then coarse texture medium by liquitex basics acrylics that's another 250 ml. This stuff goes far, I've based my Morkanaut, I've based a ton of other stuff, I've used the matt medium on a painting and liberally, and I've used it all for texture effects.
Give this two part combo a try.
First paint on your goopy coarse texture medium, this will give it a sandy look, which hey, you might dig. I needed it to be just a bit more damp and lose some of the crisp grain look, so with some gooped on matt medium, bam. I've got my favorite (so far) paint on application for a texture effect. With a two part solution I can tune some parts to look more gritty, and have more fine grains, and where I want a more glumped up mud? Just more gooped on matt medium. You can even sort of sculpt with the Coarse Texture, I used it to gap fill, and apply spittle, to a bomb squig that the mouth didn't quite meet the seem for the body. Same with matt medium, if you painted something with a primer, and want to do a quick fix, matt medium can gap fill for you pretty well.
Please continue this skaven army! This videos are awesome! :D
Well done love the ogor.
I always watch your videos. I love you, man.
After the shadow colours I couldn't wait to see the end result. Big rat turned out great!!
I feel like I just joined the mini painting version of the 'I Hate Rachel Green' club @18:24. Sweet Rat though dude 🤟. I was expecting to see your Monument magenta glaze at work, but I love how this colored basecoat with layering style is really cementing for you. From the outside anyway. Have a great weekend!
Beautiful models you've made here. Your work as so much improved throughout the years, we can see it, it's interesting to follow your journey !
Next model, maybe try the best gold/old gold recipe you can get to for the new Stormcast Reclusian boys ? Or honestly.. whatever, it'll be interesting anyways :)
I got into the hobby for the painting and modeling aspect. Just recently I wanted to try my hand at kill team and also looking into spearhead for my slaves to darkness
Love this model
loving all the skaven stuff, these models are really next level, especially for all those different poses on the clanrats GW really deserves credit. The rat oger is awesome, but i would love to see a traditional brown one and how to make that look good, retro you know ;P
Would love to see you finish the whole box I. The next few videos
Ninjon have you ever tried this? For push fits try putting some tamiya extra thin on the pegs. It lubricates them and lets the air escape so you can get a tight fit.
I’m legit enjoying the music.
I really liked the red shadow for the fur... might nick that from you ;)
Love the paint job as a whole too - ofc :)
Great Video as usual but one that has more relevance for me this time as I have been wondering how to paint my Romani Werewolves for Carnevale. These are in different stages of transformation so the tips in this video will translate well for my upcoming paint jobs to keep a coherence to the gangs. Cheers.
This makes me want to paint!
That skirt wetblend was beautiful
I looked at the new AoS at the local warhammer. Boy do those Skaven look good. I’m tempted but I already have way too many things on the go!
Thanks, I’m off to slay some grey or at least finish some partially done minis.
His vids are always good, good. The Great Horned One smiles upon you, manthing.
Love a Dale appearance!
The Rats are lookin' good, Jon. I'm loving this series.
Another great video!
I would actually love to see more Skaven! Keep this project going and finish the Spearhead, would love to see it all done.
This is such a great series, I intend to get a spearhead force for Kruleboyz soon, just need to work out colours
Commenting for Lord Algo, elder god of engagement, ALL HAIL ITS BENEVOLENT WISDOM, MAY IT EVER SMILE UPON US
Video idea: quick and dirty ways to modify the new Ork boyz kit so that if you build multiple kits, you don't end up with a bunch of clones.
Hey john, really been loving your videos since I've found you about a year ago and since you asked I do have an episode suggestion for you. I would love to see your take on some of the large-scale comic book statuettes that I've started to see pop up all over my home screen. I think it would be a really interesting creative stretch to try not only a different scale but also a different genre. Whether or not you take the idea, I still love your vids keep it up
Very nice! I would love to see you do an army on Parade with your new skaven series
I would love to see you paint some of the catalyst battletech miniatures.
I legit just built all those models with out glue. Had just a couple gaps. Push fit is way better than what it was
I still haven’t opened the rule book for 9th or 10th…and I bought both on launch day… but I have painted plenty of models! :)
I hope the Vince v. Ninjon beef continues. Go Vince!
Could literally just come here for the music! Paintings good too 😆
This has made me want to scrap the Darkoath and go Scaven.. Great video!
Do the stormcast half of the spearhead. I think it'd be good for any brand new AOS players to see how you do big dudes in heavy armor as well as the rats when they pick up the starter box with a friend.
I'd really like to see you tackle a Marvel Crisis Protocol model. They are larger than GW and, being superhero costumes, have a ton less of bits and bobs slammed everywhere. There is more open canvas for you to push pigment around on.
