â€ïžđ€đ„ love the videos lads
Where are viewers sending you minis?
I paid 2 different painters for one custom kingdom death figure and they never hit what I wanted any help
Im Steve from Play On Tabletop... and every time you talk about Steve, directly into the camera, I definitely feel like it's a direct hit, hahahaha. Probably retaliation from when Nick challenged you to that Manta thing.
I don't know what you've done to deserve it, but i'm sure it was something bad!
I really do need help painting my Space Marines, though, so the comment is legit, haha
@@spacemarinesteve6057 Don't you have enough space marines already? haha
If you guys ever feel like taking a trip to our studio in Canada to teach me how to paint better than the other guys on the team... I mean... that would be great, lol.
I get the same feelings,
We are legion!
You really made my dwarf look fantastic! I repainted that glowing pipe 3-4 times trying to figure out what wasnât looking right. Now I know âșïž. Great advice! Thank you!
Honestly, I liked your glowing effect a bit more. You did a damn good job on the dwarf!
The head looks better afterwards, but your nose was more dwarfy. Keep up the good work!
This is the PERFECT tutorial format! Lots of us often paint a mini to completion, but don't know how to give it that extra touch to take it up a notch. This is excellent! Please do many more vids like this! Thank you!
TLDR: Push that contrast further
I think you missed half the video lol :P
@@SquidmarMiniatures I mean, there's definitely more, but I feel like that's the primary thing here
I agree. The hard part is how to do that in a pleasing way. Which they showed đ
bruh its 20 minutes not 2 hours
Emil and Lukas inspired me to start painting miniatures, and their advice on the channel has really helped me, keep it up guys
Have you ever thought of giving a pic at Gaming Distance during your reveals, to go along with the close up, to show us what our view would be typically? The close view is nice for fine detail but can make us think that is how the figure should look at gaming distance.
That would be pretty useful for better showcasing which areas are the most important to focus on for making things read well. It can be easy to forget about when you are focused in.
Paint the full Fellowship, and stick them in a dioramađ€đ»
Hope this is a continual series! The advice is great to see and watch and I can apply it to my own painting skills depending on each mini and what can be improved on each one in different ways! Love it!
Yeah, this was fantastic!
Love the split screen sponsor section, surprised people don't do that all the time!
Honestly, that ork looked awesome. It's like a model from a dawn of war game. Dark and gritty, and the details kinda blend together.
Actually.... It might be controversial but I think the before on the frog looked better than the after. Almost like they mislabeled the before and after. Whoever's the artist he's clearly talented.
That's actually surprisingly educational video.
This is one of the most helpful videos on mini-painting I've seen. I hope other youtube artists model this sort of thing. I remember asking myself while watching specifically the parts about pushing the contrast "Oh, that's all it is, but look at the difference!" But you don't always see that when you're watching a pro go from start-to-finish. Thanks so much!
I loved this video! So many times I sit and think âit needs something but I donât know how to take it where I want it to goâ more of these please! Yâall are the best! Enjoy your vacation!đ€đ»
What did us Aussies do???
You guys crack me up

What did the Aussies do? Well, not paint apparently.

The level of SHADE in this video đ Loving the tips & tricks! Thank you guys!
Lukas can be so savage some times hahaha
Thank you papa, I look forward to making some improvements!
Best of luck!
That was really educational, looking forward to part 2,3,4 etc !
Something that drastically improved my understanding of painting muscles and skin was how you demonstrated taking the highlight all the way up to the connecting muscle. I Choudhary figure out why my models had a weird muscle appearance, but seeing how you painted the frogs highlights really drove the point on how to make it look more natural. What a small tip, but a huge impact on the results. Thank you for showing that!
Very nice guys. It shows perfectly how what looks like "over the top" when painting it looks just perfectly right when finished. Now, if I only had the guts to push my mini's that 1 step further...
My Slann looks amazing!! Thank you so much for all your tipsđ
Hope you enjoyed it! Was a really creative paint job! :) we'll get you the mini back soon!
Just the tips?
â@SquidmarMiniatures thankyou!! Can't wait to see it in personđ
Its good that you are happy with it, but ngl dude, i personnally feel like it looked even better before they touched it, you are already an insane painter my guy :,)
I prefered the ork before, those highlights and that green tune took away a lot of the grittyness.
Was about to comment about it. The original one looks more grimdark and the after looks more like "regular" ork. I'm not sayin its bad, bit it feels like it took away some of the character and style.
The interesting point common to these four paint jobs is: increase contrast, as always. This is key in mini painting.
I prefer the after ork. I see people say the original is more "Grimdark", but to me "Grimdark" is not a lack of brighter colors or subdued colors, its more about the overall figure looking like it belongs in a setting that shows wear and tear from active use.
That Dward paintjob was sick even before the changes, incredible work!
I admit I donât really care if my paint jobs look good or bad as long as that pass that 3+ color rule and donât look like crap when youâre playing with them on the tabletop thatâs good enough for me.
With that being said I do appreciate learning new skills that can make my painting better especially if I decide to really go all out on a model
4:10- So the flower crown/hat/whatever doesnât create a shadow? I guess not, if the light source was directly above itâŠâŠ
It's a great observation. Some of this was artistic choice, but also the "light source direction" can sometimes benefit from being unrealistic for minis being viewed 360 degrees, like for game pieces. Front-on viewing only, you might make slightly different choices.
@@BloomThat true! But the only reason I was asking and pointing it out was because I was wondering if he actually had a connection with this person?!? Because if could have been what they were going for, but it kinda sounded like he was saying âthere was NO reason for a shadow thereâ to meâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠ so I was curious!?! Anything new I can learn I will try to get the most out of it!!!
@@ryankyle2467 Ultimately miniature painting moves into set photography skills, in the sense that you don't just want the light to be realistic, but to place the lights in the right places for the miniature to look their best.
I can make a lot of terrible pictures that aren't caused by the light being fake (as it's always real, it's a camera!), or the subject being bad, but the light sources being the wrong hue, or placed in locations that don't help the subject look good. A lot of lighting you see in stills, and even in movies, includes plenty of secondary lights that you would never find in real life: See basically every night scene, or anything lit by candlelight.
So can I get a light setup that makes the crown create a shadow? Sure! But does it make the subject look better? Probably not
@@jorgemontero6384 Ummmmm, okâŠâŠâŠ I canât tell if you are answering a reply I will leave in the future or if you were trying to reply to someone elseâs comment that kinda had something to do with lighting also and something went wrong or your just messing with me?!? Yeah, I get taken a picture of anything is like taking a picture of a mini! But at no point was I talking any studio lighting or lighting to be able to film a movie or show!?! I was talking about the NORMAL lighting when you walk outside and the sun is in your face, where would the shadows fall!?! Like in the case of the model in questionâŠâŠ Iâm not asking how the light should fall on it in his studio at his paint desk! Iâm asking about the lighting if that creature was REAL AND ON THE BATTLEFIELD!!! But honestly Iâm not sure where you were going with that?!? Since you were replying to the 2nd message I left (for the obvious reason! Unless youâre new to CZcams) but were talking a bit more about the original comment, but that was corrected in the 2nd part!!! But I donât know!?!
That was my thoughts exactly, though most of the highlights did look better in the after, but I agree it wasn't perfect still
They were great before and after. Good job to everyone

All the Aussie display painters: "This means.... WAR!!!"

@DamianM90 you don't speak for all of us thank you Damo đ€Ł
As an Australian I am thankful to have moved to Canada a decade ago for the sole purpose of learning to paint better. I am almost at the level of applying for citizenship, but I have to work on my NMM...
I'm proud of you. A decisions that will pay off in the long run. Once Canadian you'll be fine
This is such a good video format/topic!
I feel like with the first model, I see what they were going for. Kind of an object shadows highlight.
The part of the head right behind the headdress was in shadow despite being a high point, could have added an outline of the feathers to highlight rather than completely highlight, but that wouldn't have been fast at all.
Might have been the same on the torso? Like the big chin causing some shadows on the upper chest.
Your additions are definitely an improvement but I think the original artist had some unique ideas I want to try now
The Ork was cool, not every Ork took a toxic waste bath with Harley Quinn.
Would have like to seen a bit more of the before and after comparisons on each model to better see just what the changes did. But great content!
looks great but I do feel like the general vibe of the ork was lost
This might be your most educational video yet. Very helpful!
Great video with great tips & tricks. Inspiring!

Syperb format. Educatinal, amd fun! Looking forward to more of the same.
This was my favorite video of the last several months. Thanks!
MORE CONTRAST!!!
My tips on how much is enough highlight: make a lot, a really lot, and just when you think you have made too much and have ruined the mini, put another layer highlights. THAT is the correct amount of highlights. Continue with the mini and thank me later.
I have seen armies painted on a neon theme and they look amazing. So I guess there cannot be too much contrast if you apply it on the right places.
Cool idea for a video, hope you do more of these.
OILERS Cap!!!! way to go Emil! Also, cool video, neat idea.. do more like this.
I'm so glad you also leveled the slann on his base.
The wear & tear on the terminator looks great. I didn't expect a few lines to make such a big difference.
Just started painting this year and did some blue boys and nids. I was quite happy and was going to post them online for progress and feedback. Turns out there is no point, as an Aussie I know now I will never be good.

Amazing guys
The terminator was really impressive with so small extra touches
Super fun video guys
My whole view the last what, 6 years, is better done than perfect. Which has led me to a lot of painted minis, some looking way worse, and some better. But at least they are done and to a better than decent standard most of the time :)

Ok you got me with Gabagool, I had to go back like 3 times LOL.
The Terminator punch up was great!
I don't know. I'm Australian and the white painted walls in my house look pretty good.
Did you paint them though? Or was it migrant labour đ
â@Almindale I like painting walls ceilings less so). I even paint all my windiw a dfloor architraves with enamel paintto get that smooth finish.

You just inspired me to do a 100% restart on the copper NMM I was doing on my bloodbowl snotlings! Thank you!
When you mentioned connecting muscles, is that just making sure the shadow between each muscle isnt too dark, or do you connect the highlights over each one
Have the same issue. Still dont really get what "connect the muscles" actually means. I hear the words, I see them making brushstrokes, but it doesnt connect in my mind since its still too abstract for me.
It's a bit of both, where the deepest creases are you want to stay dark, but the shallower separations you want to join with your mid-tones. And if those points are closest to the light source, you can also join with your highlight. Hope my ramblings are helpful.

This video may be helpful, as he demonstrates the difference whilst painting the model's thigh muscles. Initially, he'd separated them with too much shadow.
Any of those minis are 100 times better than I could do lol
That Termie got himself a real glowup!... How would one go about doing that on dark angel green models? Yellow? White?, Bright green?
Hey youâre wearing an Oilers hat!!! Thanks for the Edmonton appreciation đâ€
Nice! Fun and instructive.
Learned a lot of technique by watching your videos, and itâs nice with a smaller scope like this. And itâs been a while since last tutorial esque video!
Anyways, is it possible to ask for some advice? I know you have long lists of recommendation for brushes etc. Am looking to buy a new set; for semi high level painting; both miniatures and paintings. Which brand would you recommend?
Am tiring of the citadel brush quality (being outplayed by the ones I got my 3yo from IKEA)
i haven't been painting wrong my whole life cuz i've only started painting two years ago...
I love you guys
I would think that determining the correct colours to use would be the biggest barrier to doing touch-ups on an old minis.

Hey guys, what's the placemat/chart that you paint over which shows paint recipes for washes, recess, edge, etc? Tried looking online for clues but came up short!

OI!! OZZYS CAN PAINT!!!
lol
Well I've been thinking about getting into Warhammer 40k painting again (did it once ~15 years ago now) but I'm from Australia so now I'm having 2nd thoughts?
What a sick burn against the Tabletop Time Crew with that australian comment :D
anyone know what mat lukas is using, with the paint ratios on it?
Very nicely done, like'em so far. Only gripe is the orc one. While I get, that the mini was on the messy side anda bit difficult to read, it was also really gritty / grim dark. The overhaul, while I like it, has a different vibe. I personally would've liked to keep the skin some kind of olive and don't go too much into the saturated greens. The edge highlights on weapons and shoulders definitively helped though.
So do you need to be a patreon member to have a chance at this? I would love for pros to give me more tips. Reddit is almost entirely useless for feedback
Everytime you say my name Im like WTF did I ever do to you 2. Bloody Danes :)
Yeah Danes can go eat some poo
Joke's on you, I haven't even been painting all my life.
With the ork, I would say that yes, he looks better, but you didnât improve within the vision of the mini, but pushed the >squid at approach on top of it, completely changing the minis vision
A video on color theory would be amazing. Where you show thoughts when mixing colors. I dont have a lot of colors and i would love to get some advice for color theory. Maybe a not as extrem version as your 2 color video.
