- Abandoned Tops - Erie, PA. Enjoy a look around thisvgrocery store that closed this summer on W. 26th Street. The lease was up and rather than renewing it, the store was closed and renovation efforts were put through on the nearby Tops Market even including a grand reopening.

I lived in Erie I can remember before the tops was built there used to be a biker bar and a VHS rental place there called Curtis Mathis that was back in the the 1980s and they built the tops in the early 90s

Another abandoned grocery store here in Dreary Erie. Like the Sander's Market across town, this one is probably going to sit empty for at least 10 years.
Too bad Wegman’s couldn’t move some locations a little further south of Erie! But I’m sure Giant Eagle wouldn’t have it! ☹️

Tops had gone through a bankruptcy as their former owner Morgan Stanley Private Equity loaded the chain with significant debt after purchasing the chain from Ahold Delhaize. Under Morgan Stanley, Tops acquired Penn Traffic which is a big reason they had a ton of debt. Once Tops was purchased by local ownership (Frank Curci, etc), they had to file bankruptcy and restructure. That caused multiple locations across the entire chain to shut down. The W 38th St store was a former Quality Markets which received a big renovation (its second since being acquired by Tops).
Now, Tops is part of Northeast Grocery which is the result of the merger with Price Chopper/Market 32. The combined chain is performing well and they have started to significantly invest in their existing stores with making them more modern. With the W 38th St store being in a better overall location, Tops decided to shift to the slightly smaller store and do the heavy renovation along with adding gas pumps there instead of keeping the newer, larger location.
Tops went downhill with Ahold. I'm from Niagara, grew up with all the WNY grocers. When they sold to the Jewish wall Street mafia, things really went downhill. Then Penn Traffic buying out Quality Markets, P&C Foods... Long, arduous history. Ohio had Finast stores at one time turned into Tops in the 90s, that didn't last... Then they divested Wilson Farms (Convenience stores) and Vix stores (similar to Fay's Drugs). Tops is back to locally owned, thank God.

Having grown up in Erie, PA my whole life, and moving from there in 2010 or 2011 when i was in my early 20's, its so fascinating watching videos like yours, showing places that have closed or just how some areas have changed.
2:00 My grandparents used to live in one of those townhouses, my grandma used to walk there when the weather was good and it would only take her about 20 minutes per trip (if she didn't drive): it was very convenient for that neighborhood.
The problem with tops,is their prices are outrageous and that's not a lot of people shop their.
Tops is now owned by Price Chopper in Schenectady. When they went bankrupt Price Chopper bought them, keeping the name. We have two Tops about 8-12 miles from me.
They are turning it into 3 stores. Dollar tree, crunch fitness and grocery outlet

I miss tops. I used to go there with my grandmother when I was little them tops exited the NE ohio market and still see tons of abandoned building everywhere. The one in Akron became marcs and one in North Olmsted became an Ollie's and Appliance Outlet

Good video! I didn't know that TOPS stores were in Penny. I know we have them here in WNY! i like Little Debbie cakes too! But not those ones on the ground! Yuch!

I don't know if they do it althroughout Texas, but I know in Houston, they have a small company go around and coral up the wandering shopping carts and take back to the stores. I guess the stores pay the company per cart, not for sure how it works. It is just nice to have that in place.
Tops was a great store wana first big sized supermarket here in Eastlake Ohio back in the Early 90's one day they closed down and left never heard why this even before the superwallmarts became a thing was kinda strange they were always packed and well maintained
Now, it is a building with a door and an empty lot.

Hi Wallie I never understand plaza owners. They raise the rents/leases a lot, stores move out and than store fronts sit vacant for months or more and they loose all that rent. Makes no sense.
This is ERIE. What would sit vacant for months elsewhere is going to sit vacant for about 10 YEARS here. I'm not sure if Wallie's been there on one of his past trips to Erie, but there was another grocery store across town on East 6th Street (formerly Sander's Market) that closed in 2010 and has been sitting empty ever since.
This former Tops is either going to rot and fall apart on its own, or it's going to get torn down eventually. It's very doubtful that another business will ever go in that building again.
3 businesses are moving into the subdivided property. Dollar tree, grocery store, and a snap fitness.

Tops merged with Price Chopper. Some stayed Tops, some closed, and some were sold off.
Now Wallie, you know someone is going to see that cake, candy and left over food and say, "score". I guess if you are hungry enough, you will eat anything. the old saying is "Because god made dirt, dirt won't hurt". Mold is suppose to be a form of pencillin.

I been to Tops once
They probably saved money not paying for the lease on this location to put more money into their other locations. Even have the money for a free shuttle service. Not paying for the lease on that location provided the money to fix up the other location.

Just can't understand why the Tops people build such a big store then abandon it.
That store was a mid-1990's location so it had been open more than 20 years. My guess was it likely underperformed for some time while the Liberty Plaza location was performing better.

Tops stated that they were moving because there was "too much competition in the area." LOL! Other than their store two miles away on 38th street, the next nearest store is several more miles away. The real reason they moved was the area you pointed at in the beginning... Blocks of Section 8 government housing. I'm sure that store was being looted into the ground. Some of that refuse around the building appeared to be household garbage. Windows smashed out only a month after moving. I'm sure if they turned out the lights in that building, it would look like war-torn Bosnia in several days. With Biden and the Democrat clowns in charge, thugs are even more emboldened to steal. I guarantee that property will remain abandoned for a very long time.

@elizabethorsillo7187. Wegmans is even more overpriced than tops!! Maybe even Giant Eagle. I've lived in the area for years and the high cost low pay has forced many to jump ship. I'm actually surprised that tops didnt shut down completely
