Erie, Pennsylvania | What Happened To This Place?

  • Erie, PA is a Rust Belt City that has certainly seen some better days. With a soaring poverty rate of over 25%, and a violent crime rate of 64% over the national average, what exactly is causing this? Without a doubt there are some nice area's, but a lot of it is..well...kinda run down. Amenities are excellent though, and the cost of living is certainly more affordable than many other places in the United States. Average income is 30% LESS than the national average, so that is certainly a consideration when thinking about moving to Erie. Let's take a drive and check out some of the most impacted areas.

    Believe it or not, Erie today is actually one of the better Rust Belt cities. It hasn't gone completely to hell like Youngstown or Flint have. Those cities are too far gone to ever make a full "comeback". Compared to those places, Erie has a chance and has a lot of potential.

    This is one of the nicer looking areas of the Midwest I've seen. It's pretty clean and well maintained. And it looks respectfully safe too.
    If I wanted a decent house for cheap and didn't want to live in a big city, this looks like it's a good place to be.
    Good job Erie PA!🎉❤🎉❤

    It looks like most of the houses are well maintained. This place is better than most of the others you've filmed.

    I'm in agreement with many of the other commenters: this place doesn't look bad at all. Some of the houses haven't gotten enough love, or have been cast off (and orange-tagged) entirely, but overall it doesn't look despondent at all, not like Camden NJ, Gary IN, or some of the other places you've shown. I don't know when you recorded this, but it feels like it was a Sunday afternoon: "Lazy day, Sunday afternoon; like to put your feet up, watch TV." but I digress ... A few notes:
    (1) 0:15 that brick building was a sad story: those acorn finials, of which [at least] one was missing, once capped some handsome brickwork.
    (2) 0:30 the collage on Atkinsons barber shop is GORGEOUS. Kudos to the artist!
    (3) 2:25 those guys emerging from the car looked like family/friends going for a visit - decent folk.
    (4) 7:36 another interesting mural, on the side of the "Palace Centre." I couldn't make out what it was, but it looked fabulous.
    (5) 9:05 another sad story: I really like Luxfer, a standard feature of 30's-era buildings, but alas in most places if it's got Luxfer it's forelorn.
    But I really enjoyed the ride through Erie. Thanks for taking me along!
    Thanks!

      Thanks so very much for the comment and the super thanks! This one in particular was done on an early Friday. I normally dont ever do early filming, but I was trying to get ahead of a snowstorm. As for the degree of how "bad" something is, I dont really look at it in terms of a comparison to other cities. That would put me into a corner real quick and leave me with a very limited platform. Each city has a unique vibe to it usually, and not everything is what it seems to be. After filming over 100 cities at this point, I want to try and bring more to the channel and see what ya'll like and what you prefer more of. I have a lot of ideas that I will be experimenting with. So not everywhere will be a Detroit or Camden type thing. I like new adventures and keeping it interesting, for my own sanity :)

    There are actually some lovely areas in Erie...just like every city, you have some more run down areas but all in all Erie is a pretty decent place. My sister lives in Fairview which is a suburb and it is beautiful, tranquil and seconds from Presque Isle Beach..

    Whenever I look up real estate in these areas I only see expensive places. I wonder if the less attractive places are already owned by the state and not up for sale. Thank you for sharing.

      Winters are harsh there with lake-effect snow. The freeze-thaw cycle stresses out road surfaces. Same with other lake shore towns like Buffalo.

    The downtown or commercial area actually looks well kept, although many vacancies and not much activity. Looks safer than a lot of busier US cities, but I could be wrong.

    • @TheJhn924
      @TheJhn924 Před 3 měsíci +1

      I agree. Erie has lost much of it's manufacturing and economic base but it seems an effort is being made to keep up the city... we aren't seeing garbage on the streets, as is the case for many cities. Also, videos taken in winter tend to make urban areas look worse than they really are.

    • @mayavenuemisfit814
      @mayavenuemisfit814 Před 3 měsíci +1

      It is. Especially when you compare Erie to other Rust Belt cities our size. It's not like Youngstown or Flint, where most of the city is extremely dangerous day or night. Erie does have its "iffy" parts, and there are some shady characters downtown, but it's not nearly as bad as the aforementioned two cities.

    What happened to Erie Pennsylvania is people just realized there's BETTER places to LIVE! Places with better opportunities, better weather, newer looking, up to date buildings & houses, healthier life styles, less crime, less poverty, higher paying jobs, and definitely not so depressing. Erie is a very depressing place to live. I lived there from birth for 21 years and then i moved out west and i never looked back ....

    Erie was one of the locations they chose to film The Road starring Viggo Mortensen for its post apocalyptic scenery. I believe they filmed at the beach which on a gray day like you show here fits very well with the theme of the movie.
