  • Belle Glade, Florida is one of the most poverty stricken and high crime cities in the state. Unemployment is twice the national average. Abandoned buildings and homes are common in many areas. Located in Palm Beach County with a population of 16,728 people. Amenities are few, jobs are hard to come by, and not much to do around this place. Upside is cost of living is much lower than most areas in Florida, if you have a job. Let's take a drive and check out some of the worst area's.

Back in the day this was a major sport fishing town on lake okeechobee. People came from all over the world to fish it. Then the army core of engineers ruined the lake around the 80’s. A lot of these buildings were mom & pop motels. Fish died, business died, most of the towns around the lake died. No jobs. A sad ending to a once booming area. 10:41

I always think of Clewiston as the center for fishing on Lake O. Belle Glade was more where the cane workers stayed during harvest time. I suspect most of the deterioration is due to the fact that cane workers aren't needed anymore. Last time I was thru Belle Glade, even the hospital looked like it was closed. The parking lot was used as storage by a local tractor dealer.

A friend of mine is a sheriffs deputy for Palm Beach County (PBSO), I did a ride along with him out there on a Saturday night, that was interesting! Most of the 2 story buildings were built for Sugar Cane workers that would come to town to harvest the sugarcane by hand before self propelled harvesting equipment was introduced, a lot of those building only have ONE restroom and/or shower in them!

Despite homes and buildings being abandoned and the area stricken by poverty, I took the time to visit Belle Glade and saw that it’s actually quite a beautiful place deep down.
This is when I delivered a HVAC permit to a client’s house at my previous job.

You'd have also been surprised had you driven through Runyon village or pelican bay, a couple of the old migrant worker communities that look as if they were a section of a shantytown taken straight out of Haiti or Jamaica. My father used to operate the water plants for the communities and I remember the road to get there being so ruined by the cane trucks that I was afraid it would break our truck's suspension every time we drove on it.
