- We test and review the new Quest 3 virtual reality headset! From field-of-view testing to photography through-the-lens to check for image clarity, we put Meta's mixed-reality headset through its paces in this deep dive. We compare its performance and user experience with the Quest 2, Quest Pro, and other VR hardware. Here's what you need to know about how applications and games look and run, and how it works for streaming PCVR through a wired and Wi-Fi 6E connection.

CORRECTION: Apologies, we're actually wrong about the Elite Strap with Battery charging. It appears there is a USB charging port under the strap, in front of the adjustment dial. We weren't able to see this in the unit they had on site at Meta Connect, and interpreted PR's answer about the charging options incorrectly.

CORRECTION: I apologize, I believe I'm actually wrong about the Elite Strap with Battery charging. It appears there is a USB charging port under the strap, in front of the adjustment dial. I wasn't able to see this in the unit they had on site at Meta Connect, and interpreted PR's answer about the charging options incorrectly. My bad on this one.
You oughta pin this perhaps
Tech is cool, but I wish it was from a company that respects my data privacy. Facebook is not that company...
Maybe put that correction in it's own pinned comment, I couldn't see it without expanding the comment and had someone else point it out to me when I mentioned it as a drawback.
Doesn't do a lot of good to make a correction no one can see.
Is the old elite headstrap for Quest 2 still compatible?
Another correction: You said the dock doesn't come with a cable or charger, while there was no charger I can confirm the dock does comes with a two meter cable. That is at least longer than the 1 meter cable that comes with Quest 3.

Ah yeah! Just checked the official photos and there is one on the bottom near the dial. Thanks for the correction!
Phew. This is one of the extras I was eventually planning to get, so very glad to hear this. For now, I'm planning to cut off what remains of the arms from my old, snapped elite battery pack and find a way to rig that into the fabric strap that comes in the box.
should pin this :)

Did you notice there is an unreleased AMD GPU listed in the software you showed?

The only Quest 3 review I care about. Norm has seen it all, has the context and understanding that's totally lacking in other tech publications and channels.
🙏
Agreed! The reason why I always check reviews from Norm first! 🔥
Yeah, like the gamer's nexus of VR reviews.
My favorite thing about this comment is that the same comment exists under other reviews claiming those reviewers to be above the rest.
We can't just accept that these are opinions.
@@mechanicalmonk2020 I’m no bot nor am I a paid shill. I agree with this sentiment, most reviewers only have experience with a small handful of consumer devices and don’t have much to share. Norm has seen all sorts of industrial, specialized, and prototype hardware so I’m far more interested in his opinions.
I don't think I have 'ever' sat through a 53 minute review of anything in my life. Great work indeed. Mine arrives tomorrow. Can't wait.
Mine now says 12th instead of 11th u getting it tomorrow already makes me so jealous 😅
Mine changed from tomorrow to the 11th I got the 128..
Also getting mine tomorrow, can't wait.
@@judahsfinest1860 also 128. One guy made an amazing point: Once u are finished with the game u wont play it again so games like Medal of Honor with 40GB space will be uninstalled.
Tomorrow 09:30 am. I can pick it up in the store. Can’t wait!
You need to have your own VR CZcams channel. You have the best, most in-depth reviews of VR hardware.
Coming from the Quest 2, it's shocking every time to see how good the passthrough on this headset looks. I'm so used to blurry black and white with bad exposure settings.
I'm coming from the Quest 1... so you could say I'm excited. Surprisingly, I received the direct touch update the other day on the 1, and it works great
@@ReasonBeing25high five bro
Trust me. It’s not as good as you think. But it’s probably good enough.
@seanbiever5362 that's fine, the 2 color cameras are only 4 mega pixels so we're talking at least 720p vision lol. Quest 2 was probably 144p 🤢
@@SeanoldBeasley People have been clear that it's still not close to retina or anything, and you can clearly see in the videos that you still have to contend with the wonky reprojection geometry stuff, but it's going to make it usable for the first time in an affordable headset which is pretty cool.
Just tried my Quest 3 last night. I'm coming from an original Quest (skipped the Quest 2) and the improvements are with the Quest 3 are massive. Much lighter, better feel, no fog, images are vastly improved. Really really pleased with the 3. Great review.
It's just too bad about the black levels, seems to be it's only real negative or trade off.
Only thing I miss is inky blacks of OLED panel :(
@@80sHolic7yeah totally agree. I picked up the quest3 last night. I have the quest 2 and the psvr2. the psvr2's display is at the top for me. the blacks are perfect, and with HDR, it's insane how bright it can get. oled screens in VR make the experience so immersive. but i have to say the quest3 is pretty awesome. MR is going to be pretty cool on it (when did they switch from calling it AR to MR?). I spent a solid 20 mins just walking around my house and moving the menu screen with me. for example putting the menu screen on my dining room table and then pulling up a chair and sitting in front of it is such a cool experience.
The black levels are the only thing that I'm worried about, since I'm coming from a PSVR2. Yeesh, I already need a Q3 Pro with an LED+Local Dimming(Or better yet, a 'Micro'-OLED & EyeTracking + Foveated Rendering etc).
But ya, is there any glare or god rays like you get with PSVR2? The OLED mura can be quite nasty too at times, especially in Resident Evil Village in those darker areas! :P
@@birdlawyer6191
Go straight to Quest 3. The pancake lenses alone are worth it. The Ring-less controllers are so much nicer, the slim front visor, higher resolution etc. I wouldn't waste a dime on Q2 now that i have Q3.
ive learned to not doubt metas "coming soon" features...the hand tracking was "coming soon" and its turned out to be fantastic imo
With the depth sensor data collected, hand tracking and occlusion should be solved relatively quickly and the upcoming AR "Augments" are going to be fire 🔥
GTA Coming Soon
The coolest thing is being able to grab floating menus with your hands on the sides and move them around. Oculus link is buggy and got lots of glitches on the peripheral when using it for google earth or viewing the desktop (at least on wifi that worked fine with the quest 2). I feel like they deprioritized oculus link because nothing improved with it. They used link to entice people to buy into oculus hardware, but they really just want you buying content from their store so link got worse. The official accessories are all laughably overpriced, so wait for those from 3rd parties. The strap that comes with it, works pretty well.
They are one of the few companies that actually immediately start improving their product with big updates
The hand tracking on q3 is even better than q2, and th3 upper body tracking is super cool albeit underutilized by games
Fantastic review Norm. The gold standard. Really appreciate the in depth FOV analysis. Glad it lives up to 110 horizontal FOV claims. The future is bright for VR and hopefully soon MR/AR
I was playing blade and sorcery nomad last night and the extra fov really took me off guard, it looks much better
@@spacedout4061 It's so useful for B&S now that we have more peripheral vision when we're surrounded.
The most detailed VR videos! Great work again thanks Norm!
Great review. I watched one other review and it was like a feature runthrough. You actually went beyond the specsheet and gave us insight into the user experience.
I got everything I heard from other videos and so much more. I was suprised to hear about the tilted screens and the implications that has on FOV as well as aliasing issues. Amazing review, no details left behind
Awesome review Norm.
As a DK1 backer it's amazing to see how the industry is progressing. Hopefully we get some new MR content soon.
Looking forward to trying the Q3!
It's crazy how far we've come and I still have such nostalgia for those early days. Never forget Extended Desktop mode where you were just staring at a sideways Windows desktop strapped to your face, trying to drag the app onto it and fullscreen it.
I'm still using an OG Oculus Quest 1, so pretty much everything about this one is a huge leap forward, but I still got a ton of no-spin information out of this. Thanks for another excellent review Norm.
Hey nice, me too. I really only use it for wireless pcvr now. Have you seen anything that has made you want to upgrade yet? I'm trying to hold out for deckard.
still nice for horror games because oled
I'm still on the OG rift. So for me it's a quantum leap
@@Goodoo4U I'm still (barely) using a rift too lol but I'm not sure to upgrade yet.
I think need a bigger leap in either productivity/AR to replace most of my flat-screen time or an overall better gaming experience with eyes tracking/foveated rendering and OLED.
I'm poor and patient so I think I'll wait to see what's Valve has to offer.
Norm is the gold standard for VR reviews. I was going to try to live with the regular strap, but if Norm says he had to go with the elite strap, then I'm just going for the elite strap right away. Also what an adorable doggy!
I would wait for the 3rd party straps. Stuff like the BoboVr Halo strap make the elite strap look like the default strap.
@@HeadCannonPrimeyou say that, yet when I looked at reviews, it said it’s worse for high intensity games where your head is flipping everywhere. Sure, the elite strap can be tighter on the face at times, but it’s snug and comfy. I’m too skeptical since people say it moves around a bit
@@EnderMonThere's definitely the potential for some movement on my previous Bobovr M2 Pro strap, though the Q3 sticking out less far may mitigate at least some of that. Strapping a headset directly to your cheekbones for hours (ala Elite strap) can get painful. It's a tradeoff depending on your use case.
No he is not. I got the Original Vive because of Norms descriptions and excitement about it. God what a letdown. I'm so happy Apple is finally making something that deserves Norms Vive hype.
@@MysticMaven i’m sorry to tell you this buddy, but pretty much any product that’s not made by Apple is going to be second rate garbage junk. The ONLY non-Apple product that is superior is a PC. MacBooks/macos is trash.
Best review out there I could find on the Quest 3 so far, great work and special thanks for the extra added details, like the lens and panel orientation! :)
Can’t wait to pick mine up tomorrow! Been looking forward to this review
By far the most informative and complete Quest 3 review I've seen. Great video! I am really enticed to get me one.
Your review is always very in-depth. Thx, Norman!
Great work once again on a review Norm! I greatly appreciate the depth of your testing. I would love to see you do more VR content (although I know you are probably already quite swamped!)
You always have best reviews !
Amazing review as always Norm! You all always have the most in depth review, definitely the one I wait for! ❤
Easily the best reviewer on CZcams - honest, in-depth, knowledgeable, unbiased. I can't ask for anymore than that. Thanks.
This is by far the best Quest 3 review out there. I've been loving tested since the beginning and appreciate that you still put out amazing content like this Norm!
Fantastic review! I can't wait to get it and enjoy better FOV, resolution and lenses in MSFS and other sims!
Going from the original rift to this, so excited to see the differences
Same, upgrading from Rift, excited
That's gonna be a wild jump
That's gonna be another dimension.
Same. CV1 (2016) to Quest 3.
I hear Qeust 3 with Link still isn't back to PCVR graphics performance (speed not resolution obviously.)
I went from rift s to quest 2 and the jump in clarity was insane. The new lenses and 30% sharper displays from the 2 on this one will blow your mind haha
Love the detail. Another great review. Thanks Norm!
Norm, this was the best comparison/review of the Quest 3 I've ever watch on CZcams! Thank you!
Great review, finally a video that actually answers the real questions about a headset
Excellent review. Pro level, as usual.
This is the best review of anything I have ever seen in my life. Subscribed and hope you review all other tech that launches. Love your work.
Actually an amazing review
especially all the little details like seeing artefacts on the edges of a rendered area on the rotated display was very impressive
Im currently using the quest 1. Im going to upgrade to the quest 3. Thank you for your insight and opinions :)
Thanks Norm. As usually, you did the most thorough VR review that I could find. Amazing work! I loved it when you pet your dog, I hadn't even noticed him/her in the clutter of the fun stuff in the room you pet him/her.
Perfect review! Enjoyed every minute of it! Thanks.
Thank you for the in-depth review. I have the Quest Pro and am a big fan of local dimming. I was disappointed when I switched from Quest 1 to Quest 2 because of the lack of dark blacks. Sounds like I'd be disappointed with the Quest 3's lack of local dimming.
Really great in-depth analysis of the Quest 3. I'm looking forward to using this on PCVR. There a a few Quest apps I have that I really like, but graphics quality so far is still better in PCVR. The Mixed Reality is something that has real potential. If some devs could mix AI with MR I could see being able to have DaVinci, Henry Ford, Edison actually come into your living room, sit on your couch and have a real conversation. Now THAT, would be a great use of MR. Thanks, Norm loved your video!
We sure are heading into one of the most fascinating eras of tech in human history. I told my wife that I can’t wait until I can go to Disney world one day without leaving my house!! Lol
Absolutely SUPERB in depth review. Thankyou.
👍🏻Very detailed review on Quest 3, Quest Pro (No Pro 2, too sad). Can't believe I watched the whole 55mins of review. This is indeed very informative!covering most aspects of Quest 3 I want to know while photoshots from lens comparison are very intuitive and buyers should know what to anticipate from Quest 3. Well done, man!
Norm always knocks it out the park with the VR reviews
Norm always has the best reviews of new tech. Great job as always.
tons of work to make a detailed hour-long video. Really appreciate your hard work. Very informative and helpful
The audio jack placement is an unusual choice, but high quality 12" 3.5mm extension cables (which maintain a strong connection surprisingly well)) are very inexpensive so adapting existing audio gear is trivial, with only a miniscule loss in quality due to the added resistance.
I’d imagine that it would be easy for Meta to implement a software setting to reverse the headphone polarity. It would sure be a good option for people that have the Logitech earbuds
@@assignmeanameplease Most good earbuds these days are not symmetric, instead having a custom shape for the right and left sides so you can't swap them; I can't speak for Logitech specifically, but any earbuds I've bought for over $100 are always curved to fit better and not interchangeable.
This could work for cheap sets, but cheap sets are already easy to replace with one going the other way.
A truly thorough review. Thank you for the depth and insight.
Probably one of the best product reviews I have seen to date. Well done.
We got a Quest 1 and 2020 and haven't gotten any new headset since, but we're considering getting this one so the upgrades will probably feel pretty drastic lol
I could see the quest 3 being much better for pcvr than quest pro aside from local dimming/eye tracking. Quest 3 has better encoder with av1 and higher pixel density along with a higher fov. That for me beats out local dimming.
Great review! Thank you! I'll hold off to see what Valve is cooking up. Can't wait to see your review on that one!
i’m completely new to VR and decided to dive headfirst into it and purchased the quest 3. I’m picking mine up tomorrow, I’m super excited!
It's pretty amazing how affordable this stuff is already. I was expecting it to take longer than it has to get this level of VR/AR at this price.
Yea I never thought I would ever be able to afford any vr. But the quest 2 is only $250 now. But I'm looking at the 3 cause I figure if I like it I'll have it for awhile. Plus I have glasses and I hear the 3 works just fine with glasses. I don't understand really if I have an ok pc, can I store the games on pc and use the headset? Or would it need to be downloaded.
@@birdlawyer6191 I don't have one yet and I'm not very informed to be able to be of much help I'm afraid.
My _slightly_ educated guess from what I know is that I think you can install games directly to it that play on its own hardware wirelessly. Then you can play PC games in VR with it plugged in with a wire and your PC is doing the heavy lifting of running the game. Then I believe you can do that same thing but wirelessly over wifi. However, that will introduce some slight latency and/or video compression.
Cannot wait to get my MQ3!!!
dang, good to see someone who actually knows what they're talking about with these headsets, not just an all-purpose tech reviewer
Great review as always!
I'm surprised glasses may be as good or better than the inserts. I think I'll still get the inserts, though. I wish they put more money into the display rather than into mixed reality. I put my headset on for a break from reality.
Does not matter what new stuff it has, going with lcd instead of oled is a fail for me as i will never touch another hmd unless it has oled, as oled should be mandatory for all vr hmds as no onexwant thst lcd grey washed out colours grey blacl levels that lcd fails with.
Good luck with that being affordable
That's what I thought too until I got the Psvr2. The problem is it comes with its own baggage. The mura is such a pain in the a*s. At this point I think, it's a much better tradeoff if you want to use the headset for a bit of everything and not just gaming. I've found it extremely hard to forget mura and it's very immersion breaking. Black levels though, you don't think about them until there is a dark scene.
Wow, very comprehensive review thanks!
Your original quest 1 video convinced me to buy it and your previous quest 3 video convinced me to buy this newest release.
Thanks Norm! Always wait on your reviews for the "final say", even though I've got opinions of my own when I try stuff out :D
Your call on PCVR headsets right at the end is spot-on. Q3 is certainly some level of generational leap, but if you're looking for the new top dog of PCVR, this isn't quite it. For standalone, though, Q3 is very compelling for sure.
Are there any PCVR headsets that can match the low price?
Pcvr has never been about law price but the best experience. Quality has a price. Even the original rift full kit was 1000$ and that's before the big inflation.
@@ViperVenoM13 I dont have the luxury of spending that much.
@@RazgrizWing so don't
I been playing my PS5 with VR exclusively, and I will say this, I love it, I don’t even use a TV anymore, the only downfall is, if there’s a power out, it can be a bit of a difficulty level getting passed the “please press buttons” also it’s heavy, and the console is a bit bruise if you wear glasses.
Pros, the screen is 1000% better than a qcd super hdr television, plus eye tracking, and it has the ability to show outside objects so your less likely to smack a person if your playing a game with motion physics.
I rate the ps5 vr as 11/10, it looses some marks for weight, and comfort. It could definitely have a more optimized sound but I paired it with some skull candy noise canceling over ear headphones, which is great.
Excellent review. Thanks
Thanks for the review! Refreshingly deep without trying to cover up lack of background information with "entertainment".
I think Meta will be reminded once again, AR isn't ready for prime time yet. Not many even asked for it. Games are where it's at right now. Not silly AR tech demos or productivy stuff.....people want better VR games!
The adult industry will decide how fast AR tech evolves
Quest 3 has a lot of potential. Honestly the only thing I would use it though is to watch 3D videos 😂
I mean the games are pretty good like Bonelab
Surprising amount of information I haven't heard in other videos. Good to see someone doing their job :)
A review to end all other reviews, thank you!
It is going to be my first VR headset and i hope that it will be great! I am going to play mostly PCVR and it is a pity that Quest 3 doesn’t have an eye tracking to spare some GPU power for better graphics. I wish it also had OLEDs. I really don’t understand why is everyone so hyped about pass-through and MR apps because it doesn’t look like something serious for gamers. It looks more like a gimmick for 6 y.o. kids or a possibility to work in VR for a small group of people, who actually need this feature. I wish i could exchange pass-through for an eye tracking and OLEDs. 😅
While i do think MR has potential i fully agree with your other points. And it'll be my first vr headset as well.
The only thing that worries me is the tilted screens he mentioned. I hope i won't notice much issues and will be able to enjoy movies using the device.
Also, being new to VR, i didn't entirely understand what he meant by the resolution not being fully utilized by the headset , so that's one other point of concern, but according to everything I've seen about it, I'm pretty sure I'm going to like it.
Very good and detailed review! I totally agree that they should have gone for 12GB of RAM.
Norm, great review, very comprehensive. Thanks for taking the time to tease out all the details. I did have one question: would it be possible with this headset, irrespective of the strap you use, to run a cord to a battery bank and sort of stick it in your back pocket and get a ton of hours out of this thing?
Best review. Very thorough and helpful. Thank you so much!
Very good video. I have the Quest 3 and the Quest Pro. While I like the Quest 3, I still can't get past the quality differences between the Quest 3 and the Quest Pro. With local dimming and the pancake lenses on the Quest pro along with the build quality, I'm sticking with the Quest Pro for now. It really is a good headset especially for pcvr.
I'm terribly sad Quest is such a closed ecosystem. There is so much potential in VR, yet to get anything working you have to put a lot of effort into turning your device to developer mode and using uploading platforms like SideQuest. Many amazing things, like standalone VR ports of hundreds of classic games, never came to life due to Meta's closed doors policy. :( After a lot of work I managed to install standalone Half Life 1 ported to VR and spent dozens of hours playing it. It has such a potential!
But who was apple?
Well, at least we can use Virtual desktop and steam.
It is pretty open, it's running on Android. Turning your device to developer mode and downloading games from third party platforms like side quest is something closed ecosystems won't let you do.
It takes like two seconds to get sidequest going, but keep crying.
It isn't a closed platform as it allows you to sideload APKs and connect to a PC. It isn't a lot of effort to get your device into developer mode. Takes less than 5 minutes and it's something you only have to do once.
Norm, when I want the real deal, I come here. Picked me up one yesterday after all your input. Worth the update from the quest 2 imo. Appreciate all your effort and info. Always well done 👏
Thank you, great in depth review.
Watched most reviews today. This one stands out as the best one by far.
Awesome video man! the stuff you said, its all pretty compelling and makes me feel better about this headset.
that being said, seeing the spacewarp in virtual desktop hurt my whole body, lol.
This is a great vid. keep it up.
Thanks for the info. Especially the part of using prescription glasses 👍🏼 Most channels seems to forget about that.
More thorough than other "reviews". Thanks.
If there's any video that would get me to order the headset, it's this one. Not just an 8 min review but detailed and tested for all specs. Excellent video man
Great review!
Thank you so much. Your review shows issues that are not shown in any other video.
Amazing review!!🤩 Thanks Norm!
Thanks for the in depth review. Loved every minute of it. Wish you would have done the same review for Pico 4 though.
thanks, great review
Great review. Pistol Whip announced a graphical upgrade just today! So excited to get my Quest 3!
Such a great review!! Thank you
Thanks for the echo VR drop
Great review as always! Thank you!
What I did miss though was any kind of comparison to the pass through quality of Vision Pro. Since I know you tried this, it would be super interesting to hear if there were similar wobbling effects with the Vision Pro and how the latency was perceived.
Less wobbly, but still present in near field. Latency is similar, which is to say not as good as tracked controllers
Thanks, very much appreciating your answer! 🙂
Wow, not sure if I understand this correctly but sounds like that the dedicated R1 chip on the Vision Pro did not noticeably help with minimize perceived video latency compared to Quest 3.
Thank you for this!!
Wow nobody does these reviews as well and as detailed as Norm. So good.
Great in-depth review! It may not be the headset that breaks the mainstream, but im glad to be a part of helping making it a better device for the future just from owning it!
I wish you talked more about the comfort of the elite strap, you spoke of the build quality being better, but having plastic arms still looked worse on our ears than the cloth imo. I did order the prescription lenses from zenni, but its nice to hear that my glasses (ray-bans lol) should fit nicely, while i wait for them to ship
Elite headstrap comfort is way better than with soft straps, due to both the large pad that cups with back of your head and no strain on ears or temples.
On Battery life - just get the BOBOVR M2 equivalent for Quest 3 (when it comes out). Then you have hot swappable batteries and it's honestly more comfortable than the Elite strap, and Elite battery strap. Apparently if you already have the BOBOVR for quest 2, they're coming out with a conversion kit to let you reuse your existing quest 2 one with the quest 3. Nice.
excellent review
Looks like the scanning loves it some right angles.
Really great review and I've ssen a lot of them. Nice work! 😀
Really good in-depth review. Cudos 👍
I'm hoping that with the weight placement changes the Elite strap can be used without needing the top over-the-head strap (similar to the Pro). It'd be kind of nice not having to comb/fix your hair after each use.
32:40 hybrid touch is an “experimental” feature that’s on the Quest 2 and Pro with the Pro controllers. It works great. It’s not a Touch Plus exclusive feature
❤ the intro beat 🎵🎧🎹😃👍
The biggest upgrade for me was the wifi6e on the quest3. Using Virtual Desktop, it delivers low latency and non existent frame stutter. I also have an ASUS wifi6e router, so these products were made for each other. My quest2 would have the occassional stutter. There's still image compression so the visuals arent absolutely top tier gradation but it's still amazing looking
