    Facebook, now known as Meta, made a big splash after purchasing Oculus by releasing the Quest 2, the single most successful VR product to date. Outselling the likes of Playstation VR, HTC Vive and Valve Index. And with the AR boom on the horizon, or at least, so Meta hopes, the Meta Quest 3 has come into make those Mixed Reality dreams a, uhh… Reality. But is it any good? Well, let's just say, the Meta Quest 3 has made us more excited about the Apple Vision Pro.

    10:48 There are actually 3 microphones, one on the front for noise cancelling and 2 hidden in the gap on the faceplate for picking up your voice. This gap is also an air-intake so when the fan spools up mic quality drops substantially.

      I still find the microphone to actually be pretty bad on the quest 3 despite this. Even compared to the quest 2, it sounds to me like its audio that somebody's already listened to and then having it played again. It could just be my own ears, but im not sure about it

    Having gone real hard into VR when Windows Mixed Reality launched and not upgrading since, the Quest 3 has been absolutely revolutionary. WMR was such a hassle to boot up, set up, and use. For anyone who jumped on the WMR train or an equal lower cost/budget headset when VR started to take root and has stepped away since, I think the Quest 3 is something that will bring you back and impress you.

      I picked up two Oculus Rift CV1s and my wife and I logged some serious hours on those, but they've been in storage now for like 3 years without getting used. There just weren't enough game choices, and every $50 game felt like a demo level, which was pretty lame.

    Having an Index, a Reverb G2 with it's own extra set of lighthouses and knuckles, and now the Quest 3, I can rather confidently give the nod to the Quest 3 so far. The ability to use the Quest 3 standalone, and even more importantly wireless to my PC has made it firmly into my daily driver. Just losing the need to have my position constantly in the back of my mind to track the wire even with a full pulley system, and the associated light tugs on my head as I moved, has been such a massive increase in immersion that exceeded expectations massively. Passthrough is also far more convenient and useful than I even expected. More time will tell, but I am fully endorsing Quest 3 at this time.

    One error noted for people considering the quest 3 as a PCVR headset. You can at any time including while in the air link app. Double tap your headset for mixed reality. So you can quickly get into mixed reality without quitting Oculus air link to your PC. And quickly resume at any time

    • @Joric78

      I figured he was talking about the fact that PCVR titles don't support actual mixed reality. You can switch to passthrough of course (same as the Quest 2), but the PCVR software won't actually use the passthrough, depth sensor and environment information to create mixed reality experiences that you get with native Quest apps such as Demeo, Bam, Espire 2, First Encounters, Pianovision, Cubism, Drop Dead The Cabin, Les Mills Body Combat etc.

      @KillYou360 Před 5 měsíci

      @@Joric78 ok. I'm going to quote the video where Linus says you cannot use passthrough without quitting air link...
      "Connecting to a PC does use the oculus link software and it feels pretty out of date compared to the modern quest UI and sends you right back to the cameraless stone age. LOCKING YOU OUT OF ANY KIND OF PASS THROUGH UNLESS YOU CLOSE THE LINK SOFTWARE ENTIRELY."
      I know that feature has been available forever. But it's clear whoever wrote the script for this video did not realize that.
      you cant take the quoted words above and mistaken them for him saying something else like "there's no mixed reality experiences when plugged into a PC."
      This can be a big mistake, because Linus claims everytime you wanna grab a drink, check your phone, or let your dog out that you need to either remove the headset or completely quit your game every time to use passthrough when using airlink. That's a huge negative for anyone considering this headset as a PCVR headset. But it's not true.

    I've had a Lenovo WMR headset for around 6 years now. VR blew my mind but felt like a gimmick so far, with games I would play for 15 mintues at a time, maybe more with Beat Saber and such, but that's it.
    I got the Quest 3 a week ago and it's blowing my mind still today. The clarity of the passthrough is pretty good, but just the fact of being able to see the room in real time is a game changer. I can drink, I can talk to my wife, I can avoid the dog, reposition myself... It feels like a perfect short-break tool.
    I am also surprised at how well apps run natively in the headset, and PCVR is pretty good too. Of course there's space for improvements, for me mostly battery life (i'm playing longer sessions than ever!) and heat dissipation, but this feels like a very polished product.

Using my bobo dock or bobo m3 head strap, the batteries provide an additional roughly 90 minutes of playtime, are slow to charge and only have enough active juice to maintain the charge. Plugging into a 65w anker wall wart results in proper charging, using an anker metro 20k MaH bank results in trickle loss of battery though can provide an extra two hours or so, and using a 140w silicon carbon baseus charger results in 12v at 0.8amps, not enough to even maintain a charge, for some reason, even with their own official pd 3.1 cable, as well 4 others I tested.

But it was just a hassle to have to move my table, get all the wires hooked up, make sure my area was clear, and try to keep my dogs out of the way... Quest free requires so much less space, and I can do it anywhere wire free with the option to go pcvr.... The fact that I just put the headset on and boom it's ready to go, I really can't complain.

      @Cooe. Před 2 měsíci

      ... Uhhh... What the fuck are you even talking about?... O_o The Quest 3 is better than the Oculus Rift CV1 & OG HTC Vive in literally EVERY, SINGLE, WAY!!!!
      The only place that isn't immediately & obviously true is controller tracking accuracy vs the Vive's Lighthouse setup, but that can be easily fixed w/ a fully self-tracked & 100% deadzone free "Touch Pro" controller upgrade! ($300 ala-carte, so still $200 cheaper overall w/ a $500 128GB Quest 3 than the $1000 Valve Index was.)
      The only other place you could argue there was a quality regression is the display black levels from going from OLED to LCD, but the benefits of going from 2x subpixels per pixel PenTile (ala CV1, Vive, & even PSVR2) to a full 3x subpixels per RGB-stripe pixel layout way, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY outweighs those regressions in black levels & contrast, and it's not even fucking CLOSE either!!!
      As in, thanks to being dogshit PenTile the PSVR2 doesn't even have as many subpixels (what ACTUALLY MATTERS for VR headset image clarity/"perceived resolution", NOT whole pixel count/density!) as the damn Quest 2, let ALONE the Quest 3!!!
      It simply doesn't make sense to go OLED until you can go proper silicon substrate Micro-OLED which is full RGB-stripe and lacks most of traditional polymer substrate OLED's endemic problems like mura/"dark smear".
      Also, the Rift CV1 & OG Vive most DEFINITELY had major compromises!!! The Vive's "wand" controllers were nearly unusable garbage and the CV1 required at LEAST 3x tracking cameras for a decent "roomscale" setup, and ideally 4x.

  • @danteshier5214
    @danteshier5214 Před 5 měsíci +57

    As someone who's been on the Quest bandwagon since the launch of the first quest, I have seen almost every feature that gets pushed evolve and get better.
    For example hand tracking is massively better on the Quest 2 now than when the idea was first pushed on the Quest 2. It feels way more natural and functional, albeit not in all applications yet, its really neat.
    Same with the pass through tech, its gotten so much better and the beta feature on the Quest 2 to let you see objects in the area to include people and your pets even when in game is really nice, highlights a wireframe of them in view.
    So the issues with panels not following you will surely be fixed over the life of the Quest 3, especially with people commenting on it publicly. I can't wait to get my hands on the Quest 3, hopefully the heat issue doesn't bother me too much.

      tbh it lacked some knowledge in this review for multiple reasons:
      1. they claimed battery life an issue but didnt address its not a big deal when you get a headstrap with built in battery
      2. they said they struggle to move MR screen with you when walking around by pulling it, but forgot holding quest button will reset the view.
      3. they didnt bother to check virtual desktop experiece for PCVR, Q3 only headset to support AV1 which not only I was able to play games identical to cable experience but I managed to stream my PCVR games through 5G network which is crazy, Virtual desktop supports AV1.
      4. the hot part is only felt at the outside but you never notice this heat from inside.
      5. recommending base stations in 2023 is actually dumb, its 500$ + controller cost + 1000$ headsets cost yet they complain about 500$ price tag of Q3

    • @smittyvanjagermanjenson182
      @smittyvanjagermanjenson182 Před 5 měsíci

      @TRX25EX I understand everything you said, but it was mainly an out of the box experience review and a fair one imo. Additional peripherals, software, and RTX cards add up, so I figured they were actively avoiding talking about those improvements to just show case the device mostly as is. My biggest gripe was the hand tracking. It isn't perfect, but it wasn't nearly as bad as what they showed. idk, maybe Canadians have weird hand shapes. I have no argument on base station suggestions. That's not where the market seems to be heading anymore, and I started on a rift S so I skipped all of that anyway. I'll assume they were suggesting them to people who are tracking snobs with a lot of money.
      Final thoughts on this review are this: they are just tech youtubers and not VR enthusiast youtubers. They've done an alright job showing off the quest 3 and they have a ton of subscribers, so more sold headsets for those that may be interested in this tech, which isn't a bad thing in my book

Like playing simulator games (rally/flying) and having something like ir-battery-gizmo on the controller and the vr goggles would always show where your controller is & perhaps have some fixed points that you could calibrate for fixed "front".
    Ofcourse my experience with VR is with old HP headset that worked amazingly in flying sims like DCS, has passthrough - that didn't work in games outside steam vr api (iirc) and if you let go of joystick (& especially hotas) you'd have to blindly feel around the general area of table to find them again.

    Something that really grinds my gears is It seems when Meta nerf'd oculus homes & specifically the passthrough mode on the starting menu of PC VR Rifts early this yr it was so that people couldn't compare using a 'productivity' mode on the Quest 3 to the Rift S (not sure if the link cable ever got it). Because if you don't mind grainy 'noir-like movie' living it's not that bad, obviously the cameras and depth is superior on the Quest 3 but I had been doing schoolwork on the Rift S as a sort of distraction-free *"locked in"* environment for quite a while. So when Linus says 9:53 _"back in to the cameraless stone-age"_ he really means being a PC oculus user post May 27th of this yr (surprised Linus didn't mention this) still tho _Sooo shady_ of Meta to create this juxtaposition and honestly if there was a large enthusiast outcry (there probs won't be) then I could see this being compared to Apples nerfing old systems (though it's a bit of a stretch and probs wouldn't hold up in court). I'm still patiently awaiting an affordable/bayless PCVR system (that is supported by a majority of SteamVR devs) comparable to the Rift S, wonder if that ship has sailed.

    I had the absolute complete different experience regarding hand tracking. For me it is flawless, I have 0 problems with it, it's worked every single time that I've wanted it to work. I don't know if maybe you're saturating the quest with lights and that is making it to fail but on a normal house -lighting I can track my hands exceptionally well.

    I'm pretty sure there's a fan inside because I can feel the air coming out.
    And the battery life does suck. But fortunately there is a headstrap that comes with 2 batteries, which can increase use for several hours before running out. And if you get a third battery, you can play as long as you want and not run out.

    Meta is leading the right direction with VR, the passthrough is a step in the right direction, not only because of the AR capability but mainly because of it increased overall practicality and comfort of use which is probably the critical downside of VR and the boundary for wider adoption.

      That's sorta how the Lighthouse system works on competing VR headsets. You put up base stations which shoot out lasers in a sweeping arc, which is how the headset and controllers track their positions. They're excellent for accuracy and can track the controllers even when they're not in front of the headset, but they're expensive, require additional setup and have occlusion issues if the player's body blocks them.

    From my experience with the Quest 2, meta does a good job with their software updates so things like the hand tracking accuracy, and features like pinning tabs or having them stay at your level going down stairs and stuff i honestly think will be improved and fixed within a year or two at most. time will tell though.

    You know, something like the Quest 3 could be really cool if you built an AR app that used AI to memorize activities you do, look up professionals doing those activities to generate an "average" best method, and rate you based on your performance. Gamifying real life could really make a difference especially for people with ADHD, some forms of depression or other cognitive issues that make focus and or organization difficult.

    I believe that the Hand Tracking hasn't been updated in a while so I imagine it's not actually been updated to fully make use of the Quest 3 so I imagine they're working on that.
    My only negative so far is Meta's support's feels ever so slow, but it's been great when they have. It's all slowly coming together. I think a lot of channels would actually benefit doing another review a year down the line.
    For people waiting for the right moment and price they'll probably end up glad they did. I'm still happy I got mine at launch, but some people might have hoped for more than what we have right now.
