    I have been a devotee of Arnold and his training philosophy. Now that I've got that out of the way, I believe his best showings were '72,'74, and '75. In 1980, he looked like a shadow of himself. He was in Hollywood shape, but not competition shape. He wasn't ready. He allegedly trained for eight weeks for the contest. This is after a five year retirement. Eight weeks? I don't think so.
    He pulled out all the stops, the judges were also good friends of Arnold. I don't recall if he had a had in promotion as well. Let's face it, Mentzer was the best physique that day, not Arnold.

    Unfortunately, bodybuilding is a subjective sport. Judges are human and can be influenced like any of us. Arnolds height (Mentzer was only 5'8"), winning history, and other attributes probably played a role as well as Joe Weider. Arnold wasn't above using politics to his advantage. That said, he's still the GOAT and did a lot to popularize the sport imo.

    • @lateralus2199
      @lateralus2199 Před 15 dny

      "Mike is like no way is the way?' Don't know what you were trying to imply, but he had a different view on training, which was different than Arnold's, where you trained full intensity until total failure and leave the gym to recuperate. Training like Arnold (4 to 5 hours a day, sometimes twice a day, up to training a bodypart 3 times a week!), was waaay too much time spending at the gym, unless you are ingesting massive amount of peds like he was doing. You put the body in a catabolic state training the way Arnold did. Most people enjoy spending hours a day at the gym, feeling pumped and euphoric! In actuality, training all out (like Mike did) is extremely brutal and unpleasant. You should be there in and out of the gym!
