I met Tom Platz in the late 80's at a seminar he had at a local college. He answered all my questions about my routine and how I should change parts of it. Super nice guy.
A guy who I worked alongside knew Tom Platz personally Tom in the day lived in Otley or Ilkley, wished I could have met the man.

I met him around the same time period at my first bodybuilding competition. He was a great guy! It would be cool to meet him again.
i met and have a photo with him and he signed my schiek belt that i have for sale..
It seems he loves working with people and helping them , what a good bloke !
Frank Zane had the healthiest look even during his prime. He looked like the type of bodybuilder who can climb, run, and hike with speed and endurance. Others looked too big and slow with a lot of limitations.
Exactly. I always admired Frank Zane the most. A truly natural physique that, as we saw, can last a lifetime.
Still the only ectomorph body type to win the Olympia title if l'm not mistaken.
@@straywolf77 natural?
@@joshuadoidge237 One of the few of his era that definitely did not take steroids, period. His physique, writings and stance against drugs back then is history. If he had done steroids he would have been far, far bigger. You don't know what you're talking about.
100%agree if a guy rocked up at the beach like that today it would still seriously turn heads
Both Lou and Frank brought class to the body building field. Excellent examples, both of them.
*Tom Platz! Only one that looks the same plus he's still alive unlike many!*
Lou is one of the nicest people I have ever met.
You can always tell bodybuilders who compete virtually clean as the look the same at 50 and 70 as the did in their heyday! Like Zane, Reg Park and Surge Nubret who actually looked better at 70, than at his so called peak!!
Zane looks identical At 50 at 70, and so did Chris Dickerson. Ed Corney, and Dennis Tinnererino, Bill Grant, and recently Kevin Levrone at 55!!
Boxers cut weight the same to make weight but keep strength at w/e weight they’re cutting from, but rehydrate right after weigh in for the fight
Frank Zane was my icon and the person I most aspired to emulate, body building wise. He looked down right regular at 81. I guess there really is no escaping time, even for super men.
He probably had to give up steroid use then or he would die. I think he used low dose all the time. Smarter than the rest.
The perfect mix between force and agility..he could be a runner, a boxer or a model...with the same elegance! Icon of proportions!
@Swiss Samson Look at Hershey Walker the former football player. I saw some photos of him working out when he was in the gym trying to learn mix martial arts. He wanted to try and compete when he was in his early 50s. He was still ripped.
Remember that all those steroids over the years would have shut down his natural production, so he's in a substantial testosterone deficit at this point compared to what he would be if he was always natural. They also would have done a lot to his heart and organs that may be weaker now and it's hard to get an anabolic reaction. So I think that even at 80 a man can still be strong, active, mobile and even a little aesthetic and then in the next few years reach their final resting place with full dignity. Noone lives forever I'm afraid.
Frank Zane FAKE STEROID muscles just like the rest of them!

Impressive at first but so many injuries and all that pain later on when you're older ... Ouch ... yoga is cool.
I have RFA (Ring Fit Adventure) and i always do yoga.
Actually a good comment ...yoga is cool
True. But I bet they wouldn’t take any of it back for anything the world.

The way they look now is unbelievable. Almost unrecognizable
Bruh
Haha lol
Aging is definitely a bitch
Once you abuse anabolic steroids your testicles lose their natural function and cannot produce androgen anymore.
As an artist I used to study these guys intensely for modeling used in my work. I always used to find myself using Arnold and Frank Zane simply because they looked very proportionate. Arnold in his early years is immaculate in that regard. I would never say perfectly proportioned but he knew what he was doing and worked damn hard to get a very balanced look. Frank has that same type where abs aren't a mess and his lats don't make his arms push out to make him look like a plush toy. Great respect for all of these people and I certainly appreciate the work they put in.
perfect has no meaning as it's subjective
Lol
The Quadfather was, and still is an unstoppable force. 😎
I grew up in the 80s and I remember ALL these guys! Im very happy to see most doing well! A real inspiration. I still quote ronnie Coleman all the time: "Everybody wanna be big but don't nobody wanna lift no heavy-ass weights"!
In all my years nothing has proven to be more correct than that quote from Ronnie
aint nothing to it...but to do it....lightweight... nothin' but a peanut
Yeah, was a teen just starting out in this in the 80s. Does everything ache with you now? lol.
Be sure to follow Ronnie's advice if you want to end-up with expensive injuries. The advice of doctors is far better.

I idolized these guys in my youth, but then slowly, I learned their gains weren’t natural, and my admiration waned. Still, they inspired me to push myself in the gym.
That's great but I feel like it discouraged alot of kids at the same time myself included, I feel bad for any Natural lifters that look to these Clowns for Health of Fitness advice.
It's a shit ton of work regardless of outside help. The hormones just accelerate the progress...or make more progress possible. But they should've been honest about the chemicals from the get.
I loved Lou on King Of Queens. He was the perfect casting for a 'next door neighbor' character.
Thanks for sharing Awesome video !The Natural,Famous body builders Then n Now.Inspiring whole world .Respect ,proud, love always.power heavy workout .Power success👏👏👏
HUGE respect to those on this video who bounced back after bodybuilding and are/were in great shape and health in their later years.
I ALWAYS admired Frank Zane the most !
I personally believe him to be one of the most....if not the most finest Specimens in the Bodybuilding world ! (It wasn't just about bulk but symmetry and he had it...along with posing) My uncle my Dad's twin brother (RIP) reminded me a lot of Frank Zane !! He even won in the Mr. L.A. tournament !
Also I grew up reading my dad's and uncles "old" bodybuilding magazines and admired guys like Bill Pearl...Steve Reeves...Gordon Scott...John Grimeck and of course Jack Lalane. Then later (my generation) Franco Columbu.... Arnold Schwarzenegger....Lou Ferrigno and of course Frank Zane my favorite. Last but NOT least Sly Stallone looks absolutely great especially for his age even though he never competed he always looked good.
P.S. For bulk and muscle and just the great look of it all....Lee Haney...Dorian Yates and Jay Cutler had it ! Mr. Olympias in their own right.

I am glad to see this video was truthful. As a longtime bodybuilding fan and a fan of this channel, thank you for providing real information.
Just being alive after several decades is impressive!
Frank Zane was amazing!! I remember he was one of the reasons I started training at the age of 13...now I'm like 50....and the age haven't been that kind to me. :)
Heheh
I just hope you haven’t given up on exercise
None of these men and woman did I ever even know but I just know that my inspiration to exercise was to achieve my life goals
😊
I'm willing to bet that you still look better than most.
Frank Zane had the help of anabolic remember that when comparing your physique to those guys .
The smartest thing I ever heard Frank Zane say was to make a light weight as heavy as possible. That is the reason why I keep the weight low striving for form and control.
Time under tension, slow & control
This is pure gold. Young guys in the gym want to incline 300 for sets. Not the way to go for longevity.
Frank Zane what a man! Healthy and probably (almost) natural that’s why he looked so good for long 👍.
Thank you for keeping it positive. I appreciatte your classy sharing of their stories. ❤
Always appreciated flex wheelers physique out of all the top bodybuilders. That sucks about his leg, but he definitely has a never quit attitude & tons of drive.
The one who loses his leg, and he continued exercise and doing things he loves
All love and respect for him 🌟🙏
My Heath Class instructor competed against Arnold when I was in 8th grade. His name . . . was Mike Katz. 🇺🇲
Did you ever hang off of his biceps like a swing? If so did he say "daddy got a big muscle?"
I live in Las Vegas and I often see Jay Cutler at my local grocery store. He is still HUGE.
Frank Zane was the man! When bodybuilding was more about symmetry than bulk.

Lou inspired me too. I had a near life-size Hulk poster of him on my bedroom wall as a kid. It was a shame he was at the top at the same time as Arnie because obviously that was the only reason he won so few tournaments.
Clint Walker, looked far better than any of these without steroids
They put in incredibly hard work . Say what you want but I admire them immensely
I spent many a years with most of those guys and ladies back then. Not only was I a bodybuilder too and continue still am at 70 years, but also a trainer/nutritionist to many and owner of Matrix Nutrition Supplements co. then. I used to sponsor many shows, and athletes too. Although I have always been and stayed a natural bodybuilder; 218 LB off season and 190 LB contest day, yet I can still admire the commitment and extremely hard work, especially come time for contest prep of those real-professional athletes using anabolic and/or others. Their dedication is above and beyond to what someone outside of that world could ever conceive and/or endure!
I miss those times and many of those hard working athletes. When your in that zone of body transformation, its a high only those doing it can only grin and cant wait for tomorrow and do it again! R.I.P. to some of those brothers and sisters. 😢

I saw some of my favorite motivators from my days at the gym..Cutler, Coleman, Zane, and Platz..But Ronnie, ( light weights baby!! lol) was definitely a beast with the weights.
I absolutely love lifting, but now over 50, I've decided that just keeping fit and lean is a good enough look for me..No no more crazy diets, enhancers, and heavy arse irons for me! lol.
Same here. I used to lift super heavy , I'm paying for it now. Just being fit is good enough these days.
Yeah, hitting the 50's is an eye-opener lol High reps now and slow movements. I'm content with bench pressing 225 lbs for 15 reps
Sergio Oliva and Bertil Fox were the epitome of bodybuilding
I am just shocked to see how all these bodybuilders still look amazing till today! It’s so cool!
Zane always took care of himself. Dorian. So incredibly cerebral and spiritual. Platz. So effervescent and upbeat in interviews……almost all these guys have at least one enduring attribute beyond physique that impresses me.

In the early 70’s I worked at Weider Barbell Co. in Santa Monica, Ca. I met several of these guys when the came into the store. Dave Draper lived just down the street from my father’s house where I lived after my Navy enlistment.
Great to see all those featured in this video. And thanks for sharing their stories.
I met Bob Paris on the San Juan Islands back in '95-'96 or so, when he sold his personal gym equipment to a fitness club I worked for. He helped us move it in and set up. Was all custom made pieces. Interestingly, no flat bench press, and he told me he won many Championships using that equipment. Nice guy. That may have been the period in life that he officially quit bodybuilding altogether? Good to see him move on so nicely compared to some of the others here.
Yes, many people may have forgotten about Bob Paris--like frank Zane had a classic physique...
Paris looked fantastic - probably the most aesthetic physique - but there was a *lot* of prejudice against gay folk.
I was a fan of Bob Paris back in the 80s and loved his physique. It seemed to me the best combination of size and symmetry. Rory Leidelmeyer was also impressive (and still is in his 60s).
@Ran Man - he didn't just quit like that. It was more of the issue with the Weider bros/corporation.
There was plenty of info back then about him. At that time I did like him too, a good bodybuilder with a very good physique (great in fact).
But I also remember articles from back then (1990s+) - that were talking about Weider(s) not liking him - just because he was a gay. Hence after tha time, he sort of disapeared after that.
But personally I don't think that was just his decission. More of like was was being silently "forced" out: not being able to signing some new contracts with Weider(s), less appearance in various magazines (mareketing), less opportunities...
Hi Tomm looking at young er mags still with you ,inspirataitaion deadlift 80 kg simple ex love it guy dude

As an ardent fan of bodybuilding, I was only impressed by Bob Paris and Dr. Frank Zane, symmetrical body and artistic posing ability
"Doctor" Frank Zane? What planet do you live on? Zane's no doctor, not even in the academic sense. A master's degree does no bestow the title of Doctor on anyone.

Great video. Really enjoyed it.
It seem like the body builders that actually cared about their health, are doing ok after their careers. Their careers being very bad on their health. With the drugs that they take and extremes that they go to.
I remember as a teen in the late 1980s paging through a "Muscle and Fitness" magazine seeing the guys who were obviously ingesting copious amounts of PEDs and one thing I always wondered is how in the heck they were able to get their hands on such a large and consistent supply. To this day I never figured that out. How were they getting such a big, consistent supply for years on end and from who?

Frank Zane was the epitome of the perfect muscular physic for a man.
Arnie might be the best BB of all time but Zane was like the perfect symphony of symmetry.
Close second I'll say Francis Benfatto.

Frank Zane has always been my guy, the longevity is a testament to his natural approach to body building which you can never say the same to our present crop of muscle men.
He did take steroids.
Frank is highly educated and very intelligent. Probably lended to his nickname The Chemist back in the ‘60s and ‘70s, when all these guys were blazing a trail for all of today’s bodybuilders. Today they have it down to a science. Back then they did more with less benefits. Plus that was all pre Hgh. Pretty much everything in this CZcams video is upside down backwards and silly sounding half truths.
My favorite was Cory Everson!! What a total knockout!! and she always will be. 💘

Ronnie is such a sweetheart too! Jay, ugh, biggest teddy bear. I miss these guys. Love Flex and his personality.

Tom Platz was one of my favorites mostly because he seemed like a really nice guy but as far as physiques go Frank Zane was the man.

One thing's that common in all of them is Dedication

I remember during a local body building contest years ago. Arnold Schwarzenegger was a guest at the show. He was interviewed at some point during his visit. After a question about his physique he told the reporter with a laugh and smile and said that he doesn't look like he does when he's in a magazine. He said that often times photo sessions are done just after a show when he's looking his best. Otherwise he just looks like another big guy out on the streets. Although his shoulders and arms were still bigger than what most guys had.
Jay was one of the most inteligent bodybuilders, he did what he could but did not reserve to cynthol and knew when to stop
That's why he still looks so good to this day
Dorian Yates was absolutely one of the best. I always admired him- abside from Arnold(Because I am 6'2 like Arnold and BB is a bit different for longer insertions points like myself).
But Dorian Yates is incredible. I remember the first time I saw him and his symmetry/size I thought that was the gold standard to look like. Incredible fella.
On a side note.. Zane in that last picture and 71 to 79 surprised me. Boy has his happiness changed from him till now. I never use to worry about aging or looking old, or even giving it a second thought. But boy when you reach your mid 30's you give everything second thought that you normally wouldn't. Life goes by so damn fast. Yet slow enough to make something interesting of yourself.

For me Frank Zane looks the best because he kept his body in a very nice natural proportion all the time. Those heavyweights look impressive in size, but they really look deformed rather than fit. Zane on the other hand looks like the guy that everybody wants to be. Even at an older age he looked awesome, something that none of the heavyweights could maintain because all that exaggerated bulk is very unnatural and difficult to keep.
Zane also used a lot of steroids. There are many videos of him talking about PEDs
@@richardklausoj3561 At least he was more careful with his body, maintaining nice proportions. The others just want to look like swollen toads, all deformed and unnatural, like if the sheer bulk was the goal, no matter how disproportionately unpleasant they look.
This motivated me, been working ouf 2 weeks 😊

Time is a humbler.
We have so little of it but waste so much of it.
Health complications, premature deaths, altering appearances... This all improves that natural is the way to go! There are men in their 60s and 70s that have stunning physiques and well defined bodies simply by doing calisthenics workout. I choose them over the bodybuilders in here any day. Thank you very much.
Nobody cares what you irrelevance has to say
I care about what he has to say and I agree I'm th old guy who did it naturally, i didn't win any prize or trophy but I am very fit for my age and everything works OK still. And I know I will still be the same in 10 or 20 years time..........
It's not worth using if you do get any success from using there will always be someone who got better than you by using too......
LMFAO naturally the human life span is 25-30 years of age
It’s bc vaccines, antibiotics, fake foods, fake vitamins the human lifespan has increased
You realize steroids are actually used for anti aging drugs
@@walsh9354 Steroids cause hormonal imbalance, mess with natural testosterone levels and production. And cause erectile dysfunction in long term users, that was the reason I chose to go natural.
After all what is the point of looking like a Ferrari when under the hood you are an electric scooter with a flat battery?
Me I am happy to get old, and yes in ancient times we did only make 30 if we were lucky so I guess we are lucky to be in this era......
@@oggioggi3295 really ? Gggg so smart
Why don’t you name what specific hormonal imbalances ? Gggg umm let me guess, durr you don’t know ?
It’s called androgen induced hypogonadism & it would only apply to ur luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone which stimulate your testicles for testosterone
Naturally your testosterone peaks around 25, if ur lucky you can maintain that until ur 30 years of age of age. Otherwise it’s all down hill & erectile dysfunction 100% natural
Hence actually the reason viagra doesn’t work on many elder men. You don’t have testosterone to sex drive
As I previously said
The only reason the human life span has increased, is thanks to our unnatural society
With that being said
My points, some your fears are 100% applicable to the natural life
2nd “natural” is marketing term for the dumb Bc the reality non of us are actually natural
You can use it an excuse to be small, pay extra money for “natural” supplements, or when shopping at grocery store, natural organic food
Yet we’re given unnatural vaccines at birth. Something as simple Tylenol has saved how many millions of lives from fevers we would have naturally died of ?
It’s childish to imply unnatural is derogatory living in the 21st century or take pride in a fake natural status
Arnold, Ronnie will be remembered.even though they took anabolics...coz they were the first bodybuilder of this golden era.who took it so far..... they are simply legends of their era and will even after the die....
Arnie is forever legend, but I think Frank Zane paved that path for many of these giants on this list 💪🏾
We can both agree that body building was fascinating from the 70s to 90s. It lost it's publicity in 2000s
I highly admire and respect Dorian for his willingly do downsize after retirement. Many guys just want to keep huge until their old age and have serious health issues.
Steroid users are like little kids wearing a costume and wanting you to believe it's really them! If you don't go along with it, they throw a tantrum!
Stay natural buddy!
He probably won't be on this list but what about the wcw wrestler Scott steiner
Those few I know who still lift in their old age don't have health issues because of it.
Frank Zane, for me the most perfectly proportioned body builder ever. His amazing proportions allowed him to win much bigger opponents. I think thats the reason he was still stunning in his 70s!!!!
Arnold and Ronnie and Lou Ferrigno 😍😍
When you come by it naturally it takes a lot longer to lose it. My buddies an I in the early 90’s used to power life we was always maxing our bench out. I had the best body in high school and I was a freshman. Now I’m 46 and still one of the strongest guys I know.
I remember dating this girl during my undergrad days in the early 80's. She worked at a gym (one of the famous chains) as a personal trainer. After graduating, I went to grad school (out of state). I came home for a visit during my third year and was in a convenience store and walked by the magazine rack and there she was on the cover of a bodybuilding magazine. She had gotten HUGE and had an impressive moustache that 80's photo tech couldn't hide.
Did you say steak?
Yeps, androgens will for all intents and purposes turn a female into a male.

Ahead of her time. These days that's just the new normal.
@@kat3871 Bingo!
Late 70's - early 80's, these guys were an inspiration to my training - which was always a great hook with the ladies. But I didn't neglect my education over the training which, unlike the physique, is still there for me today 100%. Balance both and you won't go wrong. My 2 cents.
This is why I slowed down on exercising as it wears out the body over time.
I just do light stretches and exercises here and there on top of trying to eat less and a bit healthier.
After 30, the body goes down hill with all sorts of costly problems!
I always am fascinated by the creativity of the jokes and puns

I missed Lee Haney here but this video is great!
What aamazing work You did, didnt saw single video on CZcams about bodybuilding with Such a detailed stuff. Im curious what is on channel lso. Im subscribe and like. All best
We liked and rooted for Arnold in my house in the 70s. I remember him giving an interview later on where they asked him if he used steroids and he said... "Of course, we all did." They also asked him about diet and if he drank milk and he responded "milk is for babies... I drink beer!" Of course, he meant "good beer" with some caloric value and "not that piss water." lol
Yes, he allways says that he and all others uses steroids, but that 60/early 70s stuff was like vitaminpills to that chemistry the stupid Hulks use today...

Oh, I understand that. The synthetic hormones they use today create inhumane creatures, not "body builders." It affects their mental faculties, they become viciously addicted and lose a lot of their judgement. I see pictures some of these guys and it's repulsive and scary what they do to themselves and think it's in anyway positive. They become so inflated, they can't hardly move around and can't reach to wipe themselves, they're so distorted. You couldn't pay me enough to do that to myself. Sad.
The stuff in the 70s (I new a guy who used to play for the Jets, he was strangely muscled and lost his hair early, wore a bad toupé, behavior so erratic and self-centered they tossed him off the team) was bad enough, if you didn't take regular breaks from it. Did strange stuff to you.
@@MtnBadger The sport itself has a lot of issues with it, the 'freaks' win, you want to compete, you basically have to do dangerous shit and it's getting more and more out of hand.

Oh, I agree. When I was in my day, years gone by, I stood 6' 4.5"/240lbs and was in top shape. Today, I'd look like a toothpick next to those idiots... And that's a problem.
There are no more "heros" for which young men to aspire, just mutated bullies.
The cover of muscle magazine used to show what you could do with dedication and training, now it's an homage to modern "chemistry" (to use the word loosely) and mad scientists. If I saw my kid getting interested in that, I'd rip it out of his hands and take him to the first rugby test (match) I could find. They're the "real athletes" with heart and determination and the best overall athletes you can find (think football, soccer and wrestling, all in the same game). I played national league for 5 years and they're the best, well centered bunch of loonatics your ever gonna meet and they don't all die of rot by the time they're 55.
Anyway ,I guess they're going to have to take a stand in the sport and ban chemical use in pro and armature levels with strict penalties, like baseball and other sports and have a full reset.
There'll be a lot of pissed off people and the sport will suffer for a bit but, that's better than the slow, painful death it's enduring right now. It used to be about getting fit and being the best you could be, once upon a time.

@@MtnBadger It seeps through in any media, recently a friend sent me a picture of the instagram dreambod (lean, very muscular, perfect lighting) and went on with how a bit of work (30-1h playing with a dumbbell at home, few times week) he could get that physique and should just stop being lazy.
I'm not one the shatter dreams since he might fall in love with the positives of bodybuilding but, had I bet my life the guy wasn't natural, if he was, excellent genetics and worth-ethic for many years. But how do I convince someone when the average holywood transformation and Olympia stage look like it's possible and 'not that impressive'.
For me weightlifting is about all my disabled body can handle in terms of sports and it has positive effects on me (I'm out, active, around people, eat well, sleep well, avoid bad habits.) But if my body wasn't already a wreck, who knows how enticing something would be, it's hard to think consequences if you never had to deal with them and if you're just that few % away from being the best in your region... Again a thing I'd never have to worry about, I'm lucky I can walk. :'')
