  • How come Merse is so confident England will beat the Swiss and win the Euros? Why should Gareth Southgate have no excuses for the quarter-final? And who needs to have a word with Jude Bellingham?
Merse and Jeff discuss all of that plus whether the Euros have harmed Southgate's chances of landing a job with a top club, the enduring drama that is Cristiano Ronaldo, why France are dull to watch, their top 5 players of the tournament so far and whether Erling Haaland would score 60 goals in the National League.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Our next episode on Saturday is another Q&A with Merse and Jeff. Has Merse asked out any more pop stars (see last episode)? We can't promise more revelations like that but you can ask them about almost anything to do with football or themselves.

Ronaldo is best used coming on after 60mins, against tiring legs. Playing him from start doesn't help him. When extra time is always a thing with Portugal, coming on after an hour would maximise his chances of impacting game even more.
Would he really leave squad if manager pointed that out?

We're left to hoping an attacking side will finally give us space to play quick, transitional football. If Swiss sit back they'll probably win it🙄. Having Foden/Kane/Bellingham/Palmer means a goal out of nothing is always possible.
Don't know about you but Gordon not getting a shot to balance team out on left baffles me. Foden goes 10 and Bellingham alongside Rice. Sounds obvious doesn't it?
Palmer and/or Toney or A.N.Other if we're still struggling with immobile Kane compressing game? (someone has to run beyond Kane ffs) I don't understand Toney after 94mins or playing with nobody to go outside on left...and even (maybe) get to byline for cutback/cross? *swoons*

At Dortmund Bellingham played as a 6 or an 8, with a personal preference for 8
When he arrived at Madrid, they were in need of goals and tried him almost as a false 9
He's never been a 10 and never will be - he isn't a talisman who ties the play together
England need to work out where they want him to play - his first touch and passing isn't actually that good and he no longer has the desire to sit deep - he's an athletic box to box player
But having both hm and Rice in the team looks a bit 'clunky' - either way him drifting around in the way of everyone else isn't really working, especially as he isn't a nimble ball player

Greece werent great to watch when they won it but thats not their fault.. that was the coach working out what suited them best...we could do with that now..we might actually play well more often

How can he possibly say he would be amazed if we lost to Switzerland when we was 80 seconds away from going out to slovakia 😂😂 Switzerland are a way better team than slovakia and England cant play as a team. Also did he say he'd be amazed if spain beat Germany, i honestly think he just says opposite to whatever the majority of people actually think will happen!

England have been dreadful. The only reason for optimism is that Swiss will actually attack. So Merson, hopeless England fan will tjink they can win.
I don't think its on same level as Swiss claiming theyll win and be in final!
Fans are allowed to be optimistic, can everyone calm down about English arrogance? Is this an official pod? These guys connected to squad ir England? Are other countries ex footballers saying they'll win their QF?
Bizarre. Swiss 2.1 is head but heart says England 1.0

Switzerland are a very effective attacking team. They dispensed with Italy in 90 minutes.

Morata is always showing form in the euros. Watch him score against Germany. Musiala and company needs to score more than one.

I have always like Southgate, i think hes done an amazing job for England.. Although this tournament hes wound me up a bit to say the least but, i have every faith in him to win and take us to the finals... I know why ppl don't like him, but i really do.

But isn’t that the exact same scenario for Italy against the Swiss? player for player better quality but lost due to poor team performance? so in theory why would you not see a strong possibility of them upsetting England, if I was the Swiss that’s exactly what my mind would be thinking right now..
