Why are we dancing around the fact that Gareth Southgate is tactically limited coach. It’s not hard to see it. Jude Bellingham is not #10. His whole career until he went to Real Madrid Jude was playing as #8, Box-to-box midfielder. The only reason Real Madrid played Jude as false #9 is because Karim Benzma went to Saudi Arabia and RM was waiting for Mbappe. Just because Bellingham wears 10 doesn’t mean he should be playing there.. I believe Phil Foden and Cole Palmer are better creative players than Bellingham. I would play Bellingham and Rice together in midfield with either Palmer or Foden in front of them.

What you say is obviously what should be happening. But it should also be clear to you and all the pundits etc that Bellingham beside Rice is an impossibility for Southgate because he will ALWAYS play two sitters, hence the what he said about Kalvin Phillips. He can’t ask Bellingham to sit as a 6. I honestly believe the guy goes by whatever his assistant tells him. And his assistant has as little credentials as he does. England would do better with the players managing themselves, I’m sure of it. They know how they play for their clubs.

Following his mediocre performance for England against Switzerland where he was nonexistent for 100+ minutes, there’s a lot of calls for Harry Kane to be dropped in favor of either Ivan Toney or Ollie Watkins. There is an unwritten rule that says that he can drop a stinker every game and stay on the pitch for the entire game and he won’t be benched in their next game. If anyone wonders why England haven’t been scoring a lot of goals at the EUROs and had moments in games where their attack doesn’t have any ideas, go ask Kane what he’s been doing on the pitch. At this tournament he’s been nowhere near his best and I know he might be carrying an injury and doesn’t look fully fit, Gareth Southgate has to bring more out of his talisman. I get that he has an ability to come deep and collect the ball and sometimes he doesn’t even touch the ball, but why is he playing as if he’s a center back where he’s coming to the midfield meaning that there’s no one up front as you’re not asking Phil Foden to make an in behind run and stay in the box as that’s not his role and even though Jude Bellingham can do that, the guy is a number 8 not an attacking midfielder, and on the right wing Bukayo Saka can either cut inside or take on his fullback.
The players have to be profiled in their correct roles in order to thrive as this isn’t FIFA just because you have the best players on the pitch it doesn’t mean that all of a sudden it’ll click for England and they’ll win this tournament even though they’re in the semifinals thanks to luck as Kane has to stay up top try to be a poaching striker inside the box and meaning that the players around him Foden Saka Bellingham and Mainoo should be able to flourish with his presence in the team allowing them to have a lot of space and when you have creative players they need to be used properly and he himself doesn’t need to do all the creating from deep. He’s not the type of striker who’s going to outrun his opponents as he has to get the ball to his feet and he’s not going to outmuscle anymore either. Kane won’t be dropped for their next game against Netherlands in the semifinals but if you’re gonna play him the way he’s been playing throughout the tournament don’t play him at all and if you want to play him, he shouldn’t drop too deep as if you don’t know what to do with him you’re basically carrying a passenger in the team.

It would be great if they play a friendly this year or even possibly the Finalisimma 2025 if both wins their respective tournaments.

What personal criticism has Southgate had other than people questioning his decision making?

  • @sokrteukchannaren6151

England had always had talented players but hardly ever reached Semi-final. Now Southgate reaches 3 semi-final, and people don’t give him credit. They bring excuse of lucky draws. Draw is needed in every tournament. Why I didn’t see people complaining about WC 2022 England-France quarter final as a strong bracket while keep insisting that Spain-Germany is the unfortunate draw of the competition? Had Fulkrug didn’t score the equalizer vs Switzerland, Germany would be playing England instead. So this is not a strong bracket on England side?
Your job is to not manipulate who you will face, instead take game by game. If you win all 7 games, well you are the champions. And that’s what Southgate is doing.

Southgate is trying to emulate Sir Alf Ramsay. Well , Ramsay had the guts to leave out Jimmy Greaves and play Hurst. He also had the guts to tell his team (after Germany's late equalizer ) going into extra time --- " you won the World Cup once , now go out there and win it again " - Southgate will not drop Kane / Trippier / Walker even though they are stinking the place out with their very below average performances. If its 1-1 at full time on weds Southgate will probably tell his team to "keep their shape" and "not give anything away" ......and yet he wants to emulate Ramsay?

Foden can dance all over these players but he needs help. He needs young help, tony, palmer, eze, not kane. Maybe kane gets 20-30 mins max but this nonsense going 120 mins is absolutely pathetic to win a trophy.

If you look at the best leagues and their respective national teams, the thing they have in common is what's holding them back and it's a symptom of modern club football. Italy are the perfect example, their 11 consist of players from many different teams. Italy are at their best when Milan and Juve are strong not bc of the talent but bc that means that 2 groups of 3 or 4 players on the 11 play together all year. It makes a HUGE difference for national teams bc the lack of practice time. England also has a fragmented squad. No longer is it 3 or 4 players from which ever the 2 best teams are at the time with a sprinkle of a few others. Look at city, pool, chelsea they all have one or 2 top tier englishmen that are in the 11. That may create a very talented club team but the balance is off and its effecting international teams.

Kane is getting zero service. Foden and haaland works at man city with foden in CAM, drop bellingham next to rice, foden in CAM, Palmer left, saka right, kane will get the service he needs that way.
