  • It's another Q&A with Merse and Jeff and among the questions in this episode: should Ivan Toney start for England? Who was the strongest footballer Merse played with or against? And what do they love and hate about modern football?
    Merse also names the clubs he would have liked to play for during his career and gives his take on Enzo Maresca and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's moves to Chelsea.

    One answer :- The people involved in this sport, from top to bottom, are an absolute shambles.
    I do not admire or respect any of the footballers playing today, nowhere near as much as we did with generations gone by, and they weren't getting paid nowhere near as much... maybe that's the reason why... food for thought 🤔

      @@b.alexanderjohnstone9774 The number of substitutions permitted nowadays is ridiculous and ruins the flow of the game. I'd also add modern stadia to the list. They're uniformly sterile and lacking in character. In many ways, it feels like the club dies when they leave their old grounds. Millwall lost something intangible when they left Cold Blow Lane and West Ham aren't the same team since leaving the Boleyn. I'm now of the opinion that there's now just far too much football on TV. As with any other commodity, overabundance devalues it.

    As years go by, the game becomes more athletic, ruling out more and more players that can't handle it physically
    Paul Scholes didn't play that long ago - but don't reckon he would make it these days, plenty examples like that
    Players used to be able to get away with being on the booze a few days a week when Keane was a player - we've probably reached the level now where having one mild night out a week out stops you from being able to play at the required level
    That's maybe why the likes of Rashford and Sancho are dropping off - not cause they have addictions or are maniacs, but because they fancy a night out every so often
    So more and more characters are filtered out in favor of super disciplined athletes

    • @kiely4561
      @kiely4561 Před 5 dny

      The game has changed but not to a distinct level where paul scholes wouldn’t make it, the game when Scholes played was far more brutal, physical and creative players were kicked to bits so it’s actually more impressive that he made it back then given his stature, today they play on carpets, you cant sneeze on someone without getting booked and post peps Barcelona team the smaller more creative players who have the ability to retain possession are celebrated now, Pauls footballing brain would have a field day with some of these boys of today, he would adapt just like all the greats would. Can you imagine scoles in that man city team now where ball retention is paramount?…he could do that shit with his eyes closed.

      Could argue that what you've said (which I broadly agree with) is a side effect of football existing to make money rather than making money to exist.
      It's an industry with reputations and lots of money at stake to an increasing degree. With more to lose than "just" a game it shouldn't be surprising that efficiency triumphs over spectacle.
      It's a shame in a way that there isn't a T20 version of football threatening the traditional game. Might get a Bazball style version of play which might be worth watching again.

      But the Spain national team for ex.. are an exemption it seems!!

  • @tribeoflight-ireland868

    I grew up watching and playing football, but fell out of love with it some years back. I decided to watch this Euros and can't believe how boring most of it has been, just a few games stood out from the matches j have seen. Possession based and trying to thread the ball through an dye of a needle leads to fewer chances, and defences that are still organised. What is wrong with wingers like Spain play with, it forces mistakes from the defence , like the Swiss caused us with the goal. Shots on target have been poor for many teams.

    We’ll park the bus and Switzerland will get an early goal before we fully settle, we’ll be rattled and get caught in two minds and 20 minutes later they’ll get the 2nd and we’ll be in a full blown panic. We lose this 3-1 for me unless Switzerland choke.
