      If they were both playing with that free style mentality the defense would suck. You need at least one safety back there playing within the scheme instead of both safeties gambling. I’m just glad I got to see them both play live in my lifetime, greatness is greatness regardless of who they played for. I am a Ravens fan and I liked Ed Reed even better than Ray Lewis so if I had to pick it would be extremely biased. Understanding that I refuse to separate one from the other and will consider them to be the two best safeties to ever play.

      M olson I was going to say the same thing. Ryan Clark allowed Troy to roam. And Ed Reed had Rey Lewis calling adjustments allowing him to roam as well. We never even knew the names of the opposite safety to Ed reed. They deserve credit though.

      @@molson9059 Ed Reed would cover everything deep leaving Troy free to roam around and do what he feels best. Both could do vise versa because of their great abilities but I'd rather have Ed Reed stay deep and Troy roam around wether at the line of scrimmage or up top with Reed

    I see constant comments that Ed Reed was a center fielder only. Whatever that means. Those individuals ignore the fact that Ed Reed is the only player in nfl history with a strip sack td, punt return td, blocked punt return for a td and an interception return for a td. Id say he did it all. This is taking nothing away from Troy. He was awesome. But don't forget ed reed was much more then just a ballhawk. By the way he was the BEST ballhawk.

  • @ambrosiod605
    @ambrosiod605 Před 4 lety +23

    I'll take the guy who could time the snap count perfectly and then jump over the line and tackle the QB before he could even make a handoff. And not just once either. I can't remember Ed Reed, ever doing anything like that. Or laying out 100%, getting one hand under a ball and actually making the interception. I also don't ever remember watching a game on tv and then seeing a blur come into the screen and blow a back or receiver up, when they weren't even visible on the screen before the shot. Only Troy P could close like that. Reed stayed way back and studied QB's eyes and tendencies to make interceptions, but Troy dominated in pretty much every other part of the game. They are too different to even compare. I would venture to say Troy was not really just a safety, he was "just a football player" in the best sense. He could do it all and be a perfect example of a man on and off the field, a true role model.

      If he could do it all then why couldn't he pick off QBs? You do realize the goats like peyton manning and tom brady feared ed reed right? Ask brady how scary the steelers defense was to him and he would probably laugh and say I dont know but iv dropped alot of points and yardage on them ed could play any position as far as db went cb,ss and fs so no reed didnt always stay back since his first 4 years he played ss and won dpoy, look at the play where ed reed picked off peyton manning which in bill belichick's mind was the best defensive play he has ever seen reed intentionally misread a certain coverage from week one knowing manning would see it weeks to come and when manning saw it during game day reed exposed it..

He is one of the most physical safeties that has ever played, but Ed Reed has actually broken records and has gotten close to breaking other records. Hes number one all time in interceptions return yards, number 7 all time in interceptions and could have been much higher if he wasn't constantly injured in the 2nd half of his career. I think he is tied for the most postseason interceptions of all time. He has the longest interception td return only to be break it himself again. I agree with most of what you said but Troy and his splash plays were and are much more entertaining to watch than ed reeds. Let's see ed Reed do a flip over the D line and O line to stuff a QB sneak (more than one occasion btw) and show me a play that takes more athleticism and cerebral awareness of cadence QB snap timing and troys physical timing to start running and jump over that line so perfectly to not be offsides, or touch his own D line and get a penalty for that as well. Those plays are some of the most incredible plays in NFL history. Not to mention his highline real of other jaw dropping athletic plays he's done throughout his career as well. Diving totally laid out and scooping a ball that was literally a quarter inch away from touching the turf and turning that into an interception. The dude was straight up amazing at what he did. And if I juries didn't ruin the second half of his career then who knows what other magic he could have conjured up every Sunday on that football field.

    Coming from a Steelers fan there's no wrong answer. These guys played different styles that complimented each other. Troy was a pre-snap mastermind, diagnosing the play and stopping it before it could develop. Then Reed would be there to assist by limiting 1/2 the field the quarterback could throw to. Having fewer options to throw to causing the quarterback to hold it longer, which could then turn in to more sacks by the front 7, or the offense starts running the ball more allowing both Troy and Reed to play up or the quarterback tries to be risky and test Reed, which more often than not results in failure for the QB. When either of these guys played in a game it wasn't a matter if they would make a big play, it was a matter of when they would make it.

    Troy all day. Ed is good but his int. Numbers are inflated from catching batted balls that the cb would break up. They'd pop right in the air and instead of focusing on the tackle ed would focus on leaching off the work the CB already did. I'm not knocking him at all for it. But most of those ints. We're softballs underhanded right into reeds hands and chest. They weren't coverage ints. Like troys were. When troy was healthy he was hands down the best athlete in the NFL. Highly cerebral as well.
    Both are great but troy can add so much to your defensive scheme and packages that ed can't. based on that alone troy gets the nod.
    When Co ordinators gameplan against troy they didn't just have to worry about him down field they had to worry about him downfield, on the line, inside, outside lb positions, blitzing, dropping back, playing man or zone etc etc. Ed reed was an opportunistic ballhawk. That's it
