Very grateful for this tutorial! My 2010 Ford Escape had serious serious corrosion on the brackets, bought new brackets on Amazon for $25 or $30 bucks, and the lefthand old one snapped when I opened the lift gate! So this will be a little more tedious, seeing as I have to realign the left side of the glass by hand (very difficult for someone without experience) but I can't believe this replacement will be so simple and easy.
Don't get me wrong, I trust my mechanic and he's good at what he does- but he quoted me $200 to replace them! I'm doing them myself with my $25 brackets and my own free 30 minutes or so, thanks to this video!!
    Thanks lots!!!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am an automotive moron (ask me about plumbing!) and what I know has been learned from bitter experience and bad judgement. Your video guided me through changing the hinges on my 2002 Mazda Tribute with little grief. I saved money buying the hinges on Ebay and not paying mechanic labor charges. I totally respect mechanics who are good at their craft and I don't begrudge them well-earned wages, but when one is on limited budget every bit of guidance helps.

Just used this video to replace my latches. One was completely corroded and fell apart as I was unbolting the star bolt, had to grab a pair of vice grips for the piece on the other side to keep it from moving on the outside. Luckily got it off without the glass doing anything crazy. Found the two latches for $98 for the set off Amazon. The Ford dealer wanted $590 to for latches and labor. Just wanted to say thanks for posting this. Saved me some serious $$$.

This was a great video. The hinges started corroding a couple of years ago but I thought it was just another part rusting on our Escape. Horrible rust issues.
I found the set of hinges for $50 on Rockauto.
It was an easy project. Maybe 1 hour. Someone commented to not remove the clips on the closers completely. I tried and was successful leaving them half on. Surprising how much pressure is in the closers. Hardest part was getting the closers back on the pegs. And that wasn’t bad. This video probably saved me over $500

Thank you for this video, it was a really helpful overview. We just finished replacing the hinges on our 2003 Expedition XLT and we were happy and surprised to find that the nut for the upper part of the hinge (the part that goes on the body) was permanently affixed, so all we had to do was unscrew the old screw from it. The round glass screw part was similar to the video though. Also, in our case, the Torx screw size was T27 instead of T30 as mentioned in the video. It was the same size for both of the different screw types for the hinge. Also, we found we needed to take both tension arms completely off on the sides so the glass would lay down flush and evenly as we worked on this. It appeared (in the video) as though it was only necessary to detach those from the glass when he worked on his.

Great video! Just changed one of mine during lunch and it was a breeze! Mine is a 2012, and it was just like your video showed. I did however take off the clip on the bottom side of the hydraulic lift arm thinking that it would require less balance with only one person doing the work. Made it easier for me and was easy to reinstall at the end. Just a tip. Thanks again!

After watching this video, I know I can save on labor costs. I am the original owner, and at 282,000 miles, I don't mind doing what I can to keep my Escape going well over 300,000 mile mark. Thanks for this guide! I just replaced the hinges on my 07 explorer after one broke off on the weekend, after watching this the install was extremely simple! Only problem I ran into was the hinge that sheared off had seized the fastener due to the corrosion. Had to use a pair of vice grips and twist it off after I rounded off the beauty bolt.. Very stressful considering I'm working with tempered glass! After I got that off it was plain sailing and went very well, the little clips on the hydraulic lifts are a pain to put back on if you take them completely off, keep them attached if you can. Thanks for the guide, keep up the great work!

I have a 2001 Escape, curious if there was a recall on these & I didn't know about it!?! I took it to Ford which cost me $140 p/l...they originally wanted $175. Ford also told me if the glass breaks while they are changing it I'm responsible for paying for a new one. That doesn't seem right or fair when it's under their watch!

Hinges on my son's 05 Escape are really bad and one just broke. I guess I should get a torque wrench to keep from cracking the glass. It's really cold (10°) here Thanks for the help, and wish us luck.

About to replace mine. Thanks for the video - big help. One question - what size of torque wrench did you use? 1/4? 3/8? 1/2? Thanks

What did you do to clean off the glass and hinge pocket after removing the old hinge without removing the paint lines you made?

Great video. Just did mine on a 2009 Escape. It stinks that the set runs about $200. Go Ford! One suggestion is to open the liftgate window, then remove the lift strut by unscrewing the 2 10mm bolts holding the strut in place on the tailgate. Much easier this way. Now.. how do I attack the rust problem on these Escapes?

get the pig oil sprayed every spring and it should slow the rust down, Here in Toronto there is a company called Krown great reviews ant it cost around $150 for the spray

Brian Cathline Did my 2009 left hand side hinge today, it was completely corroded but the right side hinge still looks good. Prices are coming down, I got both LH and RH on eBay for $28 including free shipping.

My hinge corroded and fell off but left piece of the hinge on the bolt up top against the glass. Tried to get vice grips on it to turn the bolt out but it just shredded it. Can’t get a good grip and the pieces of housing are wider than the glass so I can’t wiggle the bolt out and don’t want to damage glass.
Have you ever had this issue? Wondering if I can drill it out or use a dremel or something carefully…

It looks like there is a soft ring on the inside of the glass with corrosion, I can't tell, did you remove and replace that?

I purchased a used Escape not too long ago, and with the cool weather coming in, I finally noticed that the previous owner had damaged the rear defroster grid so that most of the defroster doesn't work. The damage is significant enough that I doubt those tiny bottles of defroster grid repair paint are going to work. So I'm thinking of trying to find a rear window in good shape at a junk yard. It looks like the instructions here should cover actual rear window replacement too, except for disconnecting and reconnecting the various electrical connections. Does that sound right? Seems like once you remove the hinges, disconnect the lift struts, and disconnect the wires, the glass should just come right out, right?

I just picked this 2012 Escape up no rust under or anywhere go to open up rear hatch the hinges damn near turned to ash and disintegrated broke off in 3 chucks on left side then looked at right and its craked right up the middle had to use guerilla tape to hold it down till got the part, found em on Amazon for $30bucks and there built exactly the same as fords qaulity and they were already painted on inside so i painted again with a plastc rubber paint to seal em up.

I replaced my 2005 escape after watching this but be careful, the nut/bolt is 10 mm and not as beefing as in this video. I wound up stripping it by trying to put only 90 fbls of torque on it. It tight enough I think but can just be spun around with wrench. Guess I'll buy another someday if it starts to wobble. Thanks for the instructions though, other than my little issue, it went well. Man it's hard to get the lift levers back on though. My right hinge female for the torx bolt had stripped and we couldn't use the window until now:). My hinges costs about $59 each from Amazon. Pricey for a hinge.

I just did my 2009 and mine kept spinning while trying to get to 90lbs. Then the bolt snapped in half. Going to Ford this morning to try and get a replacement.

For anyone else reading these comments, he said tighten to 90 INCH POUNDS! Not foot pounds, no wonder you guys broke the bolts. It's only around 9 to 10 ft lbs.

Thank You, Mine actually broke in half today
This problem is way too common. I see Escapes all over the place with the residue on the back. The least Ford could do is make their faulty part affordable but instead they turn around and overcharge you. I just paid $180 after tax for 1 Hinge that never should have corroded in the first place.

They more or less did the same thing with the rear hatch weatherstripping as well. $120 is a joke.

How did you take the nuts and bolts off the window without the glass moving or falling? My left side hindge rusted and broke. I'm so scared to do this by myself. I have a 2002 ford escape the glass is heavy. What do you clean the corrosion off with? Thank you
