That is very common issue, with native English speakers, when they find "funny names" of other countries, cities, etc.
We never called out country Poland, we called it Polska. It was You! (native English speakers) who called our country Poland ;) Same comes to the name Pole, we do not call ourselves like this.
So I can bounce back the question. Why have you called our country Poland and calling us Poles? :P

It's the same in English - Polak is considered offensive.
In Serbo-Croatian, Poljak is a Polish person - there is no negative connotation to it - it's very similar to the Polish Polak since Serbo-Croatian is a Slavic language.
Unrelated, but Turk is used negatively in the Balkans, even though it's just a term for an ethnicity and it shouldn't have any negative meaning - hundreds of years of contact/interaction/warring probably explains that.
