  • Motormouth Canada , Zack Spencer, talks about how he became a car reviewer and gives tips on how to get started. The business is hard to break into and hard to get to the top. It comes down to skill, hard work and a bit of luck.

Thanks for this, Zack. I remember as a little kid watching Driving TV when it first aired and writing to you through their website asking about pretty much exactly what you've just described in this video.
Thanks for being a great down to earth car reviewer - you truly are the best in Canada for understanding what your viewers are looking for in all the different kinds of cars you review.
    Cheers,
    Neil from Ottawa

Hey Zack, I'm watching your videos from Brazil and from my perspective your channel is much more refined and insightful than the american counterparts. They're often biased towards american cars and have a childish relationship with the auto world. Obviously there are a lot of good reviewers out there but certainly there's a cultural difference. Congrats for your channel and if I could suggest something different just make it more fun to watch with different angles, drones and editing.

Hey Zack, nice meeting you... It is always intriguing how people get started in this market of car reviewer. My wife and I love cars and are sort of fanatics where we try to get as much information about sports cars we can get our hands on and your channel, discovered only this week, is great. Nice, short, straight to the point car reviews.
One constructive critic would be if you could add a 45-60 seconds about cars cargo areas... Specially for sports cars which is somewhat overlooked by car reviewers. It is understandable that you don't buy a sports car for cargo, but for performance... But with similar handling and performance sports cars, it is sometime the cargo space that could make a difference. As an example, we choosed a Mazda RX-8 over a Nissan 350Z a couple of years ago because of that reason and never had regrets.
Another suggestion: Would be fun to produce comparison reviews in the same video... For instance: A comparison between a Mercedes C45 AMG, Audi S3 and BMW M2 or M3. Probably complicated to get all three cars at the same time... But, suggestion is out!
Keep it up... Love the content.

Zack, great to hear your story and enjoy your channel. You can see your background shine thru with the ease and coherence that you talk about cars. I think more of the conversational videos are a great add in - that tone is very popular on youtube because it seems real...like a conversation with a knowledgable friend. What do you do when you are putting a review together? Do write out thoughts? I have done some informal reviews and realized i was just a blabbering idiot - you guys make it look easy.

Zac-I love your channel. I used to watch you on news here in Vancouver. So, advice if you're willing...I drive a 2008 Subaru Forrester...I love it, but two kids later, a Golden Retriever and I need a bit more room. I hate driving big vehicles, so I'm apprehensive. We live in a hilly area in maple ridge and we travel to the gulf islands a lot, so AWD is nice. I'm considering a Highlander or a Pilot... maybe odyssey IF 2017 has AWD, or a new Outback (less space but nice).... I test drove Sienna...too big. I'd love your advice. Thanks Zac. I love your reviews, it's definitely different from the others. I get more of a sense of how livable the car is. Sure I based my current car purchase from the rave reviews from TheSmokingTire/EverydayDriver/The Hooniverse (go Fiesta ST!). But I also referred to your video on it to see how it is from a day to day perspective. I also send "normal" people your videos because they can better relate to it.
If you want exposure, you can always try the murky black hole known as reddit. Prep your flame suit though if you decide to dive in, redditors can be merciless. More novel channels like Hydraulic Press Channel went from a few thousand to over 100k+ over night and has been climbing since.
-Long time viewer from the Driving Television days as a kid.
Edit: A static route test might help give it the "novelty" it needs. Smoking Tire has the canyons, The Fastlane Truck has the Ike gauntlet for truck towing, mpgomatic has the fuel economy route, winding road has the usual city/hwy/on ramps... you could do something with the scenic BC environment like Felipe Mendes said.
