Hello everyone! For those of you who are wondering why I skipped "Betty", I didn't it has just been under a copyright claim dispute for over a week now so I haven't been able to post it. Hopefully it will get cleared soon but I didn't want to keep you all waiting on the next Taylor reaction so that is why I moved on to this one.
I do have Betty up on my patreon for those of you who would rather see it now instead of waiting to see if it gets cleared

"Champagne problem" refers to 'first world problem' which is considered not serious compared to the world's poverty, death, war etc. The narrator is (sadly) referring to her own mental health as a 'champagne problem'. And "crestfallen" is an actual adjective meaning "sad and disappointed".

"Champagne Problems" is also used to signify """useless""" worries in a more broad sense, not just about expensive stuff, like if you are complaining about being sad or dejected when people are dying of cancer. So in the song, the person is feeling sad because she rejected him, but people see it as champagne problems or as just not a pressing issue. The protagonist may have depression, but oh what a champagne problem it is.

Champagne problems may have been the title for 3 reasons:
    - Champagnes are always celebratory but here the Dom perignon which was popped made the air much more somber and gave them a stab in the wound.
-Public always opines on problems in everyone's life and the rich are never shown any mercy. They go through heartbreak just the same but it's reduced to champagne problems or insignificant worries in the eye of the public.
    - Turning down the proposal was no easy choice and definitely not a mere champagne problem because it would shatter a fragile heart into pieces. But she comforts herself with the hope of someone else, someday, patching up the tapestry she shred.
"Tolerate it" and "My tears ricochet" would be great next choices :)

@@barbaraef9675 I'm glad you can relate to my thoughts. I agree with the song being regretful but I don't think she feels like she made the wrong decision but rather feels immense guilt for breaking his heart unexpectedly and without a clear reason. @dr_who6022 Před 2 lety +138

Its my one of the favorites from evermore. Nice analysis dude!
Btw, champagne problems according to Taylor meant that the town stigmatized the mental issues that the girl had, by saying she had "champagne problems"- like here's this dude proposing to her and she created another drama in her life by rejecting him. Its like their problems were trivial, in the eyes of others
Please react to Tolerate it next, if you felt this was sad, its on whole another level😅

That’s a great way to interpret those lyrics!
To be “crestfallen” means to hang one’s head in disappointment. And yes, a crest is an insignia of one’s lineage.
She also has these lyrics towards the end of the bridge that go: “she’ll patch up your tapestry that I shred.” A tapestry is something hung over a mantlepiece to display one’s family tree- and the first person here ‘shreds’ that.
This song focuses on rejection. She refuses the promise of a future with that man who proposed. His love for her posits the possibility of having a family with her; of having her become part of his family; of having her for the family’s succession.
This is what makes the champagne problem trope so poignant, because champagne is something that one would usually want and enjoy, and is also intoxicating.
But at the same time, what might seem shallow for other people might mean the world to some.
The rug was pulled right out from under his feet when she slighted his proposal. His sadness that follows suit is the most dignifying response he could possibly give to the situation. It suggests that his intentions were pure, and reinforces the fact that love was behind the intention to marry her, but that there is respect to the rejection, too. It sure as hell homes in on the idea that some people can act differently towards things they might feel entitled to, and the love that people give and show one are definitely privileges that can be taken advantage of, which can actually also be refused.

I’ve always thought that she chose the title “Champagne Problems” as an interesting play on words. Because like you said, it typically is used to describe something trivial, whereas a rejected proposal is anything but trivial. But also, champagne is served when celebrating milestones and instead they are mourning the end of the relationship, which is a definite problem when you were planning on celebrating. Also, crestfallen is another word to describe intense heartbreak and sadness. But I like how you interpreted it as her refusing to take his “crest.”

To me, it feels like the champagne becomes a problem because it was bought with the intention of celebrating a happy future, and now no one wants to drink it. Now it's just a symbol of happiness gone. Of course, people who are depressed may also self-medicate with alcohol, and then be more blunt because of it.
The feel of this song reminds me a lot of one by Fold Zandura, called Stormy Hill: "I fell awake into the love that slipped away; sadly, I need more time..." sometimes there will never be enough time, and that is the answer by itself. If you always need more time, what you really need is to let go.

This song I always admire her low notes , like? So beautiful and clear : she also has a beautiful falsetto and mix and a ton of range I don’t know if she gets enough credit for her vocal range in general but as a longtime fan who also sings : I respect it; I have to bring her songs to voice lessons often to get them down 😆

My own interpretation of the phrase is that, champagne is used for special occasions.
To celebrate, or make a toast.
In the song it was a proposal.
She said no. There was no toast, no speech was needed.
And since the glasses of champagne can’t be put back in the bottle, it’s s visual reminder that she said no.

  • @Willtheyreadme

Champagne problems refer to smaller or 'shallow' problems compared to dying or world hunger. So here the girl who rejected the proposal was going through something, as you can see in the lyrics 'madhouse I made a joke well it's made for me' but that joke became true but other people wont consider mental health issues as real problems so they would label it 'champagne problem'.
In the end she says 'and you won't remember all my Champagne problems' meaning you won't remember me rejecting you for a person problem cuz it's just a shallow problem for the society.
Also another reason is that being rejected by a someone is considered 'champagne problem' cuz it's not considered anything serious so she is saying it sarcastically 'oh you're probably chrestfallen and depressed but you know champagne problems'

Champagne problems, means the equivalent to “first world problems” to me. Like to have something that’s an issue, but in the grand scheme of the world, it’s petty and insignificant. She has champagne problems with this man.. meaning she doesn’t have a lot of good reasons to deny him… but she does. She says “I couldn’t give a reason” the reasons were very small but none the less, she just didn’t love him even tho she “should” have.. she just didn’t realize it until the moment he proposed.- that’s my interpretation. This is my fav song on the album for sure!

I love the way that the champagne problems (first world, mocked problems) can apply both to the narrator's mental health struggles but also to the sadness the guy must feel at being rejected and the end of the relationship. Like "you're incredibly rich, who cares, we're supposed to feel bad for you? you'll find someone else" but that doesn't make the heartbreak any less. And then also having the phrased turn against the narrator as in "you're not happy in the relationship and within yourself? get over yourself, a great, super rich guy wants to marry you so your life is great". Really deep and layered and I love that there are no bad guys within the relationship, we feel for both of them, it's only the judgmental outsiders who we dislike.
