I'm not saying this to be adversarial ... but literally, that is not at all one of the best/most powerful lines from the song, haha. It's abstract imagery, which tends to be widely relatable but not nearly as visceral as concrete images or actions. The line you're referring to is rather mundane and I'd expect any songwriter/poet to come up with it. The most powerful part of the song is the switch-up of the chorus after the bridge. Because we inherently expect a chorus to be repeated, the repetition of the familiar melody while changing the lyrics draws our attention and makes them more poignant. "Took this dagger in me and removed it," for instance, is a wonderfully concrete image with strong action and powerful metaphor -- and objectively a much better line. Everyone is entitled to their personal preferences, of course, but from a professional author with an MFA in English literature (specifically poetry), I have to object to the "literally the best" assessment. Cheers.

The most heartbreaking part to me is that the song starts and ends with “I sit and watch you” because even after all that, after noticing what she’s noticed and feeling what she’s feeling, after knowing she COULD leave, she can’t make herself do it and continues to sit and watch. HAPPY TAYLOR RECS from folklore/evermore (or at least not…sad?): no body no crime, invisible string, long story short, betty(?Kinda?) I wouldn’t really call those songs “happy” (except invisible string!) but they’re definitely more positive/optimistic. If you’re willing to check out outside of those two Lover has a BUNCH of happy songs-it’s happy in love Taylor. I especially love paper rings and I think he knows!

"Tolerate it" is probably one of her saddest song. If you're looking for a happy song on Folklore/Evermore probably "invisible string" and "long story short", both are really sweet. If you want really happy Taylor go check out her older albums. Lover and 1989 are probably her most bubbly albums.

That "No, no no!" In response to Taylor's absolute killer lyricism is so, so reminiscent of my initial journey a few years ago. I was kicking myself for *ages* because I missed out on this kind of incredible quality writing. Sure, her younger stuff isn't as polished, but she is good at bringing things to life almost viscerally; listening to her journey is always absolutely mind blowing and watching new fellow fans discover her is always a pleasure.

You happened to listen to two Track 5s back to back (My Tears Ricochet from Folklore and Tolerate It from Evermore). Her track 5s are specifically the most vulnerable/sad/emotional on any album! That being said, both of these albums are definitely more on the somber side. But some stand out “happier” tracks on those albums are invisible string, Betty, the lakes, willow, gold rush, Ivy, long story short. Lover is a much happier album in general if you need an emotional palette cleanser though haha

Some of the greatest advice I ever heard about relationships is: “Never stop dating your wife.”
All the joyful playfulness and spontaneous things that you’d do as young kids, or as someone trying to impress your new girlfriend-continue to do those things after she’s your girlfriend and then your wife. Keep up the energy in the relationship so that neither of you fall into that lull.
Keep opening the car door for her, keep giving her piggyback rides to the front door in the rain, keep surprising her with dates out to a nice restaurant or to see a movie she wants to see.

    • @theConquerersMama
      @theConquerersMama Před rokem +3

      And vice versa.
It made my marriage beautiful. Princess Bride kind of love was how a friend described it.
I lost my husband too soon. The Cadillac of deaths - a Widowmaker heart attack in his sleep at only 38.
The time we had though was extraordinary.
I went to grief groups and heard people's regrets. What they wished they had done differently. What what left unsaid.
      We didn't have that.
Our last words were I love you. Plans of hope & the future. Lots of laughing.
It's a gift to be able to feel that.
The loss is painful enough. You can't control that but you can control how you treat the time you get.

I saw someone on reddit talking about this song being in a perspective of a mother towards her child (son / daughter) . It really make sense because the part where she says, " i watch you reading with your head low" and the whole verse, then " i polish plates until they gleam and glisten". Like now that the child has grown up, the mother is having a hard time connecting with them. It seemed pretty cool ❤️

If you want happy Taylor then you should react to Invisible String. It's a great summery of the last 5 years of her relationship with Joe. It has great lyrics and so much clues. It would be interesting to see what you see in the lyrics because you don't know what happened in the last years. It's still one of my favorite songs of Folklore. Folklore and Evermore are the pandemic albums. For me, the most happy, lovey-dovey kind of songs are in the Lover and Fearless (Taylor's Version) albums. All her albums are great. She's such a fantastic storyteller which is why when anyone is about to listen to her music, and let's say it's an entire album of hers, you better take the whole day off, sit down and get ready to be emotionally invested because you are in some way going to relate to it or understand it and it could stir up something in you. She takes you into her world and you're captivated by every word she says and every note she's hitting. And those are done on purpose. She composes songs the way she hopes it will resonate with the listener. The more you listen to her music, you can then hear some of her silly personality show up in the lyrics that the listener will understand if you've been following what's been said about her, good or bad. Almost like an inside joke. Sorry for rambling on lol.

Also many of taylor's songs are queer coded and imply that her own sexuality is more fluid than we perceive. just food for thought

But another great thing about her is that she's a genre-shifter, so you can get different experiences from different albums. if you want happy taylor but still want to stick to those albums you should do tis the damn season and dorothea (they're the same story from two people's perspectives), gold rush or invisible string (i have a faint memory of you reacting to invisible string but i looked it up and i couldn't find the video so now i don't know if the video got taken down or if i'm imagining things)

@@irem021 i mean is not sunshine and flowers but i wouldn't say it's sad either, a bit bittersweet maybe. same for dorothea, it's not devastatingly sad but it's melancholic

Here is a list of happier songs (it's not necessarily "happy", but it's not sad either :
    - Lover (Niall did an amazing cover of this one btw)
    - No body, no crime
    - Paper Rings (this one is DEFINITELY a very happy and bright song)
    - I can't think of anything else rn, if you guys have any other suggestions leave it under this comment

the most heartbreaking thing for me is that taylor chose the word "tolerate" specifically. different from "indifference" which just means neutral (it isn't love, it isn't hate), "tolerate" is used when we don't like something or someone but we keep quiet to maintain peace. so our narrator is doing all of these efforts to keep up their home, while her partner actually doesn't like her around. he doesn't say anything, he just tolerates her
also if you want happy taylor, you can try "long story short". the production feels like a child skipping down the street, and it's just so cute

The only way I can describe the progression of this song:
    -You're watching a movie.
-A heartbroken wife is sitting in a chair
-She's looking at her uncaring husband who is typing furiously on his laptop
-Suddenly she gets up and runs into the kitchen
-She comes out with a frying pan
-She stands behind him and raises her arm
    -Then ***THWACK!!***
-The next shot shows her in her previous sitting position
    -She was just contemplating
    -Scene ends......for now....

I agree, these albums were hard to listen to! Try listening to these while you're going through a divorce! Folklore came out just as my marriage was ending. In a funny way, these albums really saved me. I cried all my tears to them. And now I see these songs as a symbol of strength. These albums are by far my most favourite work of hers ♥️♥️
