@Radian76 haven't seen the vid, but I'm guessing Seth brewed up a new iteration that's catching on in Modern. 8 Rack was tier 2-3 for a LONG time in Modern.
@@Xhadp Yeah, he takes the credit for popularizing Hammer Time in both Modern and Pioneer. I don't think it's entirely wrong, but it's not entirely correct either.

It’s an old man take, but a lot of what drew me into The Rack was Smallpox which remains my favorite card in the game, the fun part of it for me was all the punishing lines I could take to strip someone’s resources not much Scam, Thoughtseize, Lilliana, profit. No, in 99% of cases getting countered is worse cuz u pay the mana for ur spell n then it never resolves, unless u have something triggering when u cast a spell of that type, it is better to have them discarded as ur opponent still paid mana but u never had to. Plus thoughtseize is getting them closer to 0 life so if combat or direct damage r ur win conditions then u r slightly closer to that goal without having had to spend any mana, n Grief is a 2 for 1 in ur favour or a 3 for 2 if they revive it. (Sadly a 3 for 3 if they Emphemerate it) n some counterspells come with exile effects tacked on but discard so rarely does n the cards that do have it aren't competitively viable. So basically Cascade n Prowess want there spells countered instead of discarded n most other decks would be better off getting hit with a Thoughtseize. If u take the emotions out of the equation, that is mathematically the better scenario.
@@T4N7 Discard is actually worse, they end up knowing your hand and they can do it proactively. I can keep my plainswalker hidden from an azorious control until I find an opening, I can't do that versus a thoughtseize. The only downside is that a few times it's a blank, but would you prefer 85% of the time to get the threat they need to win or 100% the one they play to bait you ? The only time counterspells are more useful is if you are the aggresor (eg. Delver/Murktide etc)
@@TQuantP The discard in this case is also worse cause they can fuck up your curve turn 1 before you even do anything if you're on the draw. And aside from spellpierce, most of their counterspells are 2 or 3 mana so you still have a turn 1 play and can try to play around potential counterspells on subsequent turns
That gave me flashbacks. Didn't know it back then, but when I started playing magic, a friend of mine wanted to play against me and chose 8-Rack. Was fun trying to beat that with a precon...
I just bought my first modern deck, hollowvine, and im sure this is going to be a great matchup because i actively want to discard my hand. Im super looking forward to playing it
Classicly, Lanter Control wins more reliably than 8-rack, but I do rember it being boring to play, and frustrating for people to play against. 8-rack games run faster, and I foudn it ablot more fun to play
It’s almost like having evoke costs be free with incredibly powerful effects and creatures they’re tied to was going to cause problems. Ban a lot of the problem cards, in modern and other formats. Make healthy metas. Having 17 top decks is better than seeing the same 4 over and over. Being able to actually build new ideas or fun stuff is better than this hyper consistent unfun stuff. Reprint all cards, mostly the RL and let vintage be the format where you can play all the dumb and broken stuff. Otherwise you’ll just continue to sour peoples relationships, especially 60 card formats. I live in Phoenix AZ and most stores do draft and commander.
I gotta say getting your spells discarded is a lot worse than getting countered. At least, if they countered, I had the opportunity but discarding just strips it away for me, man. And I then lose the element of surprise in my hand.
Love the swamp being on screen longer than the rack when the entire video is about the rack being added to a modern deck. Single frame to read a card feels good Edit I've tried pausing too many times, usually love your content, but when I need to pull up scryfall to look up a card that is the focus of a short so I can make sure I'm remembering it right it would be even more frustrating I'd I had 0 idea what the card did.
8 rack was my first deck for modern and I always thought it was gonna make a comeback with 'pitch a card' cards being popular. I wonder how viable a turbo rakdos rack is with cards like liliana of the veil, sire of insanity, and persist
It's not the losing part that's the problem. it's the not being able to play the game that sucks. It's like keeping a 2 land hand and then getting mana screwed and not drawing into anymore lands. The game stops being fun when you can't actually play the game
i would absolutely prefer a counterspell, not even close, at least thats a fuckin mindgame and opportunity cost. meanwhile, esp in casual, targeted discard is literally just lol i played a one drop so i win the game because you no longer have tempo at all.
I would rather play bw control than discard. Nothing feels worst then discard spell after discard spell. At least I got to attempt to play my stuff whit counter
I wish they banned thoughtseize effects like they do in yugioh. It’s just the most toxic gameplay and takes away the element of not knowing what the opponent has in their hand.
Neither, counterspell and discard should be tools in an actual deck not an entire play style. It's competitive so whatever but talking like they are not boring AF play styles is pretty sad.
