    Pauper is so fun to build cheap decks in tbh. I built Mono-White aggro and it's genuinely such a fun deck to play since it's so dead simple but weirdly effectively.
    You run around 24 lands, then 1/2/3 drops that draw cards/generate card selections, and 4/5/6 drops that are either bomb finishers with other utility (Eagles of the North) or Monarch/Initiative cards.
    Dead simple, and you throw in a few Ephemerate and you have a surprising amount of interaction on some of the blink creatures (Blinking a Dawnbringer Cleric in response to a Dread Return on a Lotleth Troll was one of my favourite moment I've ever had in a magic game, because they knew it was lights out the moment I did that, and they clearly didn't think of it).

    Pauper is such a fun because of the slow pace and the back and forth. I like what makes a deck strong in the format is mostly because of the player piloting it rather than the deck is strong. So many interactions that players fight to gain resources.

    What do you think has been the most significant factor in speeding up pauper?
    I've been thinking about the LOTRs cycling cards. They aren't limited to basics and are in pretty much every multi color deck.

    As a control only player I am not really in love with the format. I feel like we have kinda hit that critical mass of having good cards that deck design has become how can I shove as many of the best cards as I can in my deck and hope I draw good. This may seem like a normal thing, but it really hasn't been in pauper which was always more about building synergy and finding an unique axis to interact on. Mono red just has these oops I win hands where basically nothing you can do will ever been enough to win if you are on the draw. Affinity isn't even really affinity anymore but a collection of the best cards in whatever colors combinations are the most degenerate that kinda have artifact synergies. Playing control properly and building your deck in a way to navigate the meta was always a super rewarding thing to do, but now it just isn't possible. You can still succeed with control but it isn't quite the same because you are just doing the same degenerate shit as every other deck where you just jam the most powerful cards and hope your opponent doesn't draw well and the general power of the cards you are running is enough to win without needing to take the best lines and making the correct choices.

    • @khub5660
      @khub5660 Před měsícem +1

      Affinity isn't Affinity is wild. The shell hasn't changed outside of cards that were banned (Atog and Disciple). It's all in all the same outside of the additions of Refurbished Familiar, Deadly Dispute, and Reckoner's Bargain. Control isn't and hasn't been good in a long time in Pauper.
      The closest thing you ever had was Delver when Daze and Gush were still legal. There is a control deck, and it's UB Terror.
      Ephemerate Tron is still good as long as you have knowledge of the format, but the variance of it is a bit rough.

      i heavily dissagree, i've been really enjoying the format recently and run into powerful control decks all the time and just last week Gardens went 4-0 at my lgs. but the fact that i genuinely can enjoy match ups against hard control decks speaks to how fun and interactive the format is. its intense when you have to play around a counterspell, and making miss-plays a crucial moments is (from my experience) what really ends up determining the outcome of games, not just "whoever draws good first". anyways much love, the formats not for everyone, i hope you have a wonderful day playing whatever formats you enjoy! 😊✨

      Out of curiosity since I'm an outsider, what would you consider the best metagame to have been over the years? I'd be willing to get a few lists top lay with my nephew in the future, so I'd lean towards the kind of playstyle you were reminiscing about - don't care whether those lists would be considered legal or even competitive anymore.

      @@BE-tw9de pre modern horizons 1 was the best meta game to me. It was much slower than today and heavily interactive. Affinity was still kinda problematic but was more glass canon meaning that it would sometimes just fold to interaction.

      @@caseycornett5182 Thank you. Any archetypes with even matchups that year in particular you enjoyed perhaps? As much as I like aggro decks, going as far as building two decks to then end games on turn 2 doesn't seem that exciting to me. That's also like I generally prefer slower playstyles overall, but the interactions between decks should also be considered.

    I think Pauper is in a great place and the Pauper Format Panel does a great job. I'm pretty happy with the bridges right now. Yes, Affinity is good, and they do kind of warp the format's artifact hate away from destroy effects in a way that's a little reminiscent of The One Ring in other formats, but I don't think they're a crazy outlier compared to other options for building a mana base in the format, from LotR land-cyclers to bounce lands to depletion lands to gates to tron to whatever else.

    • @airtempest8945
      @airtempest8945 Před měsícem

      My problem with the bridges is more in Jeskai Ephemerate than it is in Affinity tbh. It makes Cleansing Wildfire basically "Rampant Growth but draws you a card" while also allowing the deck to not need to sideboard against Tron. I actually like the bridges outside of their interaction with Cleansing Wildfire though (Not mentioning Geomancer's Gambit in that part since Geomancer's being 3 mana makes it much worse).

      @@airtempest8945I honesly think quite the opposite. The wildfire combo is an interesting ramp/value piece slow enough to not actualy be that strong. The entire issue right now is the refurbished familiar, it makes playing any tempo or control deck a massive pain as you'll be constantly getting 2for1 and it also gets recycled over and over either by bouncing or graveyard effects like blood fountain, the meta was much more varied before mh3.

  • @neros_soren
    @neros_soren Před 26 dny +1

    Weird to borderline insult ppl with different opinions, discrediting them with "you just don't get it".
    The Mirrodin Lands are part of Paupers identity, yes, but they are also the reason for a lot of trouble, especially in the last 3/4 years. Grixis Affinity is on top of the meta 90% of the times, because we have far too many Artifact lands, and 3 of those can be played untapped. Banning them, would slow those decks down. In context, Glitters would've never been so oppressive in terms of play pattern, if that deck had 4 less untapped artifact lands.
    Another reason against them vs the Bridges is, that indestructible lands have more decks they can actually get into, than the Mirrodin ones. You can slot them into your non artifact deck to have some protection against Ponza, you can use them to ramp. They just come into play tapped, which is a fair price to pay, for what you get in return.
    Also the reason why Control is pushed out of the meta, because the strongest deck, still, is Grixis Affinity, which is fast enough to go under Control and if NOT, just outdraws it. It's still absurd to have a deck, that lacks thread density but can still win against removal heavy decks.

One week by an abundance of gruul ramp decks with writhing chrysalis and the next week by multiple grixis and Rakdos sneaky snackers lists… Part of the issue was the sideboard didn’t offer the right answers to those decks, so I think it warrants some additional testing and edits to adapt to the new local metagame but on the same note if my only hope is drawing the sideboard pieces when I need them then maybe I should switch to one of the new decks that seem to be taking over the format while people get left behind trying to adapt…
