    My explanation for the long summers and winters would be something like: summer and winter actually have a different meaning in Westeros. They aren't tracking annual seasons but rather more long term and more subtle changes in climate over time. Evidenced by the fact that there are still cold seasons and hot seasons and wet season and dry seasons within a given "winter" or "summer".

    The farther East you go, the worse the land becomes. YITI has 5 massive forts facing East. I wonder what exactly could those forts be guarding against. Then there is Ashai and the shadow lands. It seems whatever event triggered the collapse of the Empire of the dawn is what caused the scaring of the far East and maybe the seasons.

    What do you think about the ghost grass covering the dothraki sea and the shadowlands not having daylight and a toxic atmosphere? are those also different degrees of climate change by magic?

    • @JoeMagician
      @JoeMagician  Před 4 lety +10

      Definitely, the ever exploding volcano north of Asshai which pollutes the Ash River seems to be a parallel to the doom of Valyria. Nature manipulation gone wrong, hubris by magic users that thought they had conquered the forces of nature. The Ghost Grass in particular reminds me a lot of Sauron/Morgoth where their influence would turn everything into twisted versions of themselves, even plant life. Ghost grass has that same kind of feel. Also Lovecraft in his story the Colour out of space, very similar things happened when the corruption got into the soil. Plants became poisonous warped forms of themselves.

      I wasn't disappointed in season eight because I gave up on the show long ago and to me Season Eight was more of the same and no worse than 5,6, or 7. I'll happily give credit to the acting, costumes, sets, and CGI. To me it's all expensive fan fiction. Anyway, the trick is trying to wheedle out what's true to George's vision and what's nonsense. We've all seen HBO blatantly ignore George's writing and re-do it with their own story enough to know that they don't care about telling George's story but do whatever it is that they want to do.
      I do believe George shared vital info with D&D and the explanation of two roads to one conclusion we've been told rings true. What that includes though, I don't know. The pattern is: if they liked George's story, they'e use it and if they don't they're more than willing to toss and replace it. Joe, here knows a lot more than I do and has frequently pointed out things that make me rethink things, but he has always been much more willing to take HBO's version of revealed truths far more seriously than I do.

    What if similar to dragon populace being tied to the strength of magic, maybe the population of the Others is tied to the length of the seasons. So the summers are their length as the population decreases through death while the winters at dictated by the growth of the Others population via births or their version of it.

    • @JoeMagician
      @JoeMagician  Před 4 lety +3

      I had trouble with that anecdote, because the longest summer on record happened after the death of the last dragon. That could be also happening, the white walkers' existence is definitely tied to the whole system being unbalanced.

    • @JoeMagician
      @JoeMagician  Před 4 lety +9

      The fireproof thing for Dany is not a common Targaryen trait, it's something the show exaggerated. They have died in fires before, whether dragonfire or wildfire. It's more like a miracle. For instance, Jon Snow burns his hand fighting off a wight. And Dany does experience burns from Drogo's pyre and has all her hair burnt off. It's more correct to say they have high heat tolerances than other people rather than are fireproof.
