    This is the best, and most detailed video I’ve seen yet about the 24-105 f/4 lens (and I’ve watched A LOT 😅) .
    It’s so refreshing to see someone actually show the shutter speed, aperture and ISO whilst comparing these against the same shot; I’ve learned from your video that by slowing the shutter speed one stop every time I increase the aperture, I’ll get the balance right and can even get crispier photos with f5.6 or above as long as I slow my shutter speed accordingly.
    Sorry for rambling but you’ve no idea how relieved I am to have found a video that explains the above in a way I understand. Every other CZcamsr has confused me when trying to explain this. I love the longer format too as if makes a refreshing change from other peoples 8 minute ‘tutorials’ 🙄 honestly before I watched this I was considering returning my 24-105 G and saving a bit longer to get a 24-70 GM! Now I’ll 100% save my money and enjoy my lens 👌🏼

    Great to see LOTS of sample pictures. Really shows the potential of the lens. I'm currently selling my Sony APS-C system to jump to full frame. Propably getting an A7 III but I'm having a hard time picking my first (and for a time only) lens. The 24-105 is tempting but there is also the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 and Tamron 28-75 and also 28-200.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  Před 4 lety +3

      Thanks Miro, and yes there are so many great options these days!! A very hard decisions for sure, but I really think you would enjoy the image quality and all-in-one range of this lens. The Sigma and Tamron zooms are fantastic options as well, but none of them offer what this lens does as a package. That Tamron 28-200mm (bhpho.to/3ffewPk) would be a very tempting option for the overall increased range, but the aperture is variable although a faster f/2.8 at 28mm, has NO optical stabilization, but the lens is much more affordable at ~$750 US... Reviews so far also say that lens is excellent, although I have not seen a head to head lab test with the FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens yet... I need to get that lens for review asap ;)

    • @OutriderFIN
      @OutriderFIN Před 4 lety +1

      @@Jason_Hermann I had the 18-135 for my a6400 and really enjoyed the reach. However I sometimes wished it was a bit wider. 28-200 would be roughly equal and it is as fast or faster than the 24-105 up to 100mm. Hope to see your review soon!

  • @stuartfit
    @stuartfit Před 3 lety +1

    I bought this 24-105 F4 G after deliberating for some time between this and Tamron 28-75 F2.8. Bought it used in mint condition at similar price to the Tamron.
    Bokeh is "similar" between both, 105mm F4 and 75mm F2.8 due to compression factor,
    F2.8 is 1 stop brighter than F4 BUT the OSS in Sony helped in recovering back some so I did shoot below the shutter speed = focal length rule and they're great too.
    Then there are 24 vs 28mm and 75 vs 105mm which sealed the deal for me. Some reviews mentioned the Tamron is just a tad sharper and if that's right I didn't mind too because I have better range and the 24-105 is still a very sharp lens, I'm willing to forego that little sharpness for the range and versatility. This is one lens I have never regretted buying as majority of the time I knew I was shooting at F4, F8 or F11. I have F2.8 lens too but for night photography, it will be F1.8 or wider for me.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  Před 3 lety +1

      That is how I feel about this lens also. I'll take the f/4, OSS, and more range, because I also have a few fast primes if needed for lower light ;) The f/2.8 zooms are great for sure, but you can't have it all without some kind of sacrifice... Thank you for sharing your experience Stuart!!

    Great review, I just bought a Sony ar7 ii used but in excellent condition along with a Sony 20mm 1.8, but thinking of returning the 20mm as I really like the versatility of this lens, the ar7 ii being 42mp, how would it perform with the 24-105? I know it’s a 7 year old camera, but would it be close to the ar7 iii? Even the 4?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  Před 2 lety

      The A7R II is an awesome camera make no mistake! This lens will perform awesome on it as well. What you're missing from the newer cameras are autofocus performance when it comes to tracking moving subjects in particular. Also some video features and slightly better camera bodies for example... Image Quality overall is very similar, just different max resolution with latest A7R IV

    Hi again Jay. Although expensive I will probably get this lens to replace my MISTAKE of getting the APS-C 18-105 for my a7iii. Another consideration is Tamron 17-28, 2.8 (which only covers wide-angle). Looking for an all-around lens but for video on Gimbel and macro too. Can OSS be used in combination with IBIS for even more stability?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  Před 3 lety

      Yes IBIS and OSS will work together and this is the best all around lens available today for Sony full frame I would say. Another great "all in one" lens option is the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD Lens which I recently reviewed here: czcams.com/video/YpvUqzN4DR4/video.html

      It's hard to beat Joe! Back in the day when I was doing pro work I needed something versatile, and I used the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS Lens 50% of the time I would say. The other 50% was made up of the 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS Lens, and the 17-40mm f/4 L Lens... The versatility of 24-105mm of a full frame camera is huge! f/4 is fast enough for almost anything when combined with todays high iso ability. The optics on this lens are also fantastic as you saw in this review... Thanks for the comments and all the best, Jay

      @Jason_Hermann  Před 3 lety +1

      Hello, I would rather have the FE 24-105mm F/4 G OSS lens because it has optical stabilization and more reach. However the F/4 aperture is slower which means in lower light situations it will require a higher ISO value than a f/2.8 lens for example.

One thing I haven’t tested out yet or heard about is, I understand that the playback on the a9 is a jpeg even if you shoot raw. Are lens corrections applied to that JPEG? I found slight loss in clarity in the corners in the extreme lengths and apertures. Other than that, it's almost a perfect lens. I love using my 40" Vizio smartTV as a monitor. Best lens is crazy subjective. This is an excellent lens for sure, but depending on what you are filming not necessarily. Cinema Lenses are better quality usually, but require manually focusing? You could go for a power zoom lens (bhpho.to/3szjsGT) which is great when you need to zoom in and out really smooth, but those lenses are really expensive and heavy as well. I tend to use more affordable prime lenses. For example I have the FE 20mm f/1.8 G Lens (amzn.to/38179cL), FE 34mm f/1.8 Lens (amzn.to/3mmiqg8), and the FE 85mm f/1.8 Lens (amzn.to/2UA7Syv). The depth of field play is and low light advantage of the faster aperture makes a pretty big difference. I prefer the Sony lens (I own both) for OSS, definition and speed of focus. The Tamron is also excellent, though (in my view) doesn’t match the quality of the Sony, but it offers telephoto ability beyond the Sony and is a great mid-range travel lens. A new Sigma lens, the Sigma 100-400 F/5-6.3 has superb reviews (I have one on backorder) and I think will be a wonderful telephoto complement to the Sony lens.
