Israel and Palestine Origins with Dr. Benny Morris

  • The topic of today's episode is the Israel-Palestine conflict. I've avoided discussing Israel on this podcast for two reasons. First, because I didn't know enough to feel qualified to weigh in on it. Second, because it may literally be the most radioactive topic on planet Earth. A tiny mistake or misplace word can cause a level of backlash that I just don't want to deal with. However, two things have changed over the past few months. I discuss these two factors in detail in the first few minutes of the episode.
I want the first half of this podcast to serve as an introduction to basic historical facts behind the conflict. If you're well versed on this topic, then you may want to skip the beginning. However, on the other hand, there is still quite a bit of interesting material there. The rest of this podcast is about the ethics and the current politics of the conflict. Who is in the right, and who is in the wrong? Is Israel an apartheid state that's oppressing a minority out of pure bigotry? Is it a colonialist, expansionist state motivated by religious belief? Or is it an embattled and legitimate nation-state surrounded by enemies that want only to survive? These are the questions that people struggle with and I brought in Dr. Benny Morris to help me answer them. Dr.Benny Morris has a unique vantage point on this issue. On the one hand, he is an Israeli Jew, and in recent years, he has become a major defender of Israel against global condemnation. On the other hand, he's probably done more than almost anyone you could name, to discover and publicize Israel's historical war crimes. He refused to serve in the Occupy West Bank Operation and was arrested as a result. His academic work on Israel is cited favorably by people like Noam Chomsky, who is all the way on the other side of the issue. Dr. Benny was at one point shunned by the Israeli academic community for being in essence "a traitor" to his people. He's one of the few people who can really claim to have battle scars from both sides of this debate.
Therefore, I thought he'd be a good person to help me weave through the complexities of the topic. I have a lot of admiration for Benny Morris, and I hope you find him as illuminating as I did.

44:37 So the majority of the native populatiom of Palestine agreed to not give land away to the Zionist... the Ziomists still took it, but the jews where "defending their house from attackers?" isnt it more like the house was inhabited by hundreds of years of Palestinians, the Jews came and took the house and the owners came to take it back? Is this guy for real? Do any of you understand how undemocratic it is that the Ottoman, then the British and then the UN all had a say in the fate of palestine but THE MAJORITY of the people there had NO SAY in who took how much land? You cant believe in democrazy and suuport this

I started listening to this interview with some interest in the conclusions. I was only minimally familiar with Dr. Morris's viewpoint, and felt that it needed to be challenged. I thought Professor Hughes might have the courage and wisdom to do so. I am disappointed. He clearly protects his back - he will be quite able to sit at dinner parties in NY and around the world without any fear of backlash.

He did a video with his daughter a couple days ago, which touched beautifully on the pain that each side of this conflict is experiencing right now, and the need to look at the historical facts when working towards peace.

He never mentions the overwhelming majority of early Zionist planning knew that they would need to remove the natives. He doesn’t mention the Jews that were native were Arab, he doesn’t mention they bought land and kicked off farmers that had been there generations. He doesn’t mention Zionist violence in the 1920-30’s towards Palestinians, he makes it seem like only a small amount of right wing Zionist turned to Terrorism. The fact is the Major leadership was involved in terrorism and that’s why they blew to the King David Hotel to destroy the Documents the British had confiscated in a huge raid. He didn’t mention that the Zionist had started ethnically cleansing in December of 47 like 5 months before the “war” began. He leaves out anything that makes the Zionist look bad.

I am a retired US military officer who served in the Marine Corps and participated in Muslim wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. I very much enjoyed listening to your podcast if that is what it’s called, with the Elder gentleman. I live and work in the Middle East. I am mixed race, black father, white mother. The civil rights movement of the 60s was so painful for my parents that they divorced. My mother moved back to Canada and I was raised by my black father in Los Angeles. despite my heritage, I grew up with the white skin of my mother. I was rejected by my brown skin cousins growing up, so early age I suppose you could say I had experienced racial persecution from my Brown skinned cousins. As I went on to graduate from the United States Naval Academy and ultimately served as a senior Marine Corps military officer, throughout my whole career, I had to suppress my ethnicity, and endure the N-word for24 years of military service. I provide all that history, only to highlight how much pain and sadness that the events of the recent couple of weeks have provided all of us who are dialed in to this tragedy. I am definitely Religious having been raised Catholic in my youth, and I understand much of the history, but I much better informed having watched your podcast with the older gentleman. I am 62 years old, and since the events at the beginning of this tragedy, and I’ll say my prayers on my knees at my bedside like I did as a child. Living and working in Saudi Arabia amongst a sea of Arabs who are not suffering like those in the holy land, I am struck by the absolute Beauty and the smiles of the Saudi children. Beautiful little Arabs. Big hopeful brown eyes and thick black hair. I’ve never been to Palestine or Israel, but looking at these little Middle Eastern angels, I am so distraught that’s so much pain and sadness grips our world, and we people of the faith, children of the God of Abraham, are conducting themselves in a manner that is completely godless. I wish that I could do more than just pray, and have conversations with a small handful of coworkers who are as saddened as I am. My heart is truly broken. Thank you so much for providing access to such a detailed and revealing education by your guest. I look forward to future dialogue from your channel. I hope that I am not overstepping in soon God bless you. Take good care. Thank you.

This is the historical view: No narrative can be complete regarding the ownership and possession of Israel without reference to the Holy Bible or the Tanakh. Please read Holy Bible - Genesis Chapters 12 to 17. God who created the earth made a covenant with Abraham and his seed Isaac, Jacob and his 12 sons forever! This covenant was not made with Ishmael and his seed the Arabs. They know that fully well. The land belongs to Israel!! The possession of the land did not start in 1948, 1967 nor with Ottoman Empire or any other leadership. God gave ownership and possession of the land to Abraham's seed which does not include Ishmael or the other children Abraham had with Keturah (Genesis 25). In fact Abraham gave these children gifts and sent them AWAY from his son Isaac. This Abraham did while he was ALIVE. Issac was the promised son and was the promised heir. The Bible said that God could trust Abraham because he knew how manage/order his household. Abraham had Isaac at 100 and Sarah his wife was 90) God told Abraham that he would have a son in his old age and he would possess the land - Genesis 15:18-21 (which includes the river of Egypt, the river Euphrates,.... Canaanites, and the Jebusites) Interestingly enough the birth of Ishmael was Sarah's idea as she gave her Egyptian maid Hagar to have a child with Abraham (Genesis 16). This was not the plan of God; Sarah did live to see the start of the problem Ishmael would give to the promised heir Isaac. Ishmael who was fourteen at the time was mocking and jeering her son Isaac at the feast Abraham made for Isaac when he was weaned. (Genesis 21:9-13). The child was only two. From the outset, Hagar and her son Ishmael were trouble to Isaac because of their jealousy. (You can read all this from Genesis 12 onward.) This has continued throughout the ages and this is what is unfolding in our present time. The descendants of Ishmael (his 12 sons) along with the Egyptians and Esau's descendants are the nations in the Middle East fighting Israel for the land which their father Abraham gave to ISAAC and his seed forever. Again, no intellect, no human right activist etc etc can change the Word of God. The land belongs to Israel! God is not a man that He should lie (Numbers 23:19) He keeps his covenant with Abraham and his seed forever. Should in case any nation think they can eradicate Israel from this earth or drive them into the sea, hear what the Word of God says in Jeremiah 31:35-36:
'Thus saith the Lord , which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The Lord of hosts is his name: (v.36) If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the Lord , then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever."
      Jeremiah 31:35‭-‬36 KJV
      bible.com/bible/1/jer.31.35-36.KJV
I got up this morning and the sun is shining, the sea is still roaring and all the ordinances of heaven are in place.
I stand with and am praying for Jerusalem and the nation of Israel as instructed in the Holy Bible. (Psalm 122:6-9 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee. Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces. For my brethren and companions' sakes, I will now say, Peace be within thee. Because of the house of the Lord our God I will seek thy good.
      Psalm 122:6‭-‬9 KJV
      bible.com/bible/1/psa.122.6-9.KJV
I also pray for the people of Palestine that they will be delivered and free from the tyranny of Hamas who is not about the welfare of the people but their evil agenda.

Hamas even stole the medicines, foods, and things the Palestinians needed. And the people let them. Why do they teach them to even die for hamas leaders who are sitting in luxury hotels away from any danger. There should even be a college in Gaza. Superior to any with the money given to Hamas.

Agreed. What takes place in Israel affects the nations all around it. The Israelites (Jews) have nowhere to go and the Palestinians refuse to accept a two-state solution. This issue will be resolved with the imminent return of THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. Now comes a prayer of complete surrender using caps as emphasis to help others find THE WAY AT GOD'S MERCY (HIS LOVE GIFT IN JESUS CHRIST) since our contract with survival is brokered with sadness, fragility and anxiety.
On a balcony of space STEPPED A PURE AND HOLY GOD. IN AWESOME SOLITUDE YOU STOOD ALONE. Not one faint star to give YOU light; just endless darkness, it was blackest night. But somehow in the darkness YOU COULD SEE.
YOU SAW mountains high and lofty, YOU SAW valleys lush and green. YOU SAW babbling brooks, and wildflowers grow, YOU EVEN HEARD a robin sing. Then through YOUR COMPASSION STANDING OUT THERE IN YOUR TOMORROW, YOU SAW forum's visitors, their families and friends. 🥰
YOU SAW them as sinners (missing the mark when aiming to solve a problem then creating another resulting in their weaknesses prevailing causing guilt of wrong doing) because there is no intrinsic righteousness in any of us due to Adam’s sin. YOU SAW them as they grew from a baby into adulthood due to YOUR HANDS OF MERCY. 🥰 YOU SAW them pursuing a career path for the purpose of obtaining the gains of the world not realizing that it is a loss compared to what YOU DID on the cross. YOU SAW them working long and laboring hard to receive justification by grace even though YOU stated, "This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent."(John 6:29 KJV) YOU SAW the unwillingness to accept YOUR PLAN OF SALVATION THROUGH YOUR SON JESUS CHRIST. YOU SAW them living with the guilt of committing crimes to the heart. YOU SAW them enduring personal crisis. YOU SAW the weight of the burden on their hearts with each tribulation. YOU SAW them seeking comfort from the above mentioned topography, ONE OF THE MANY MARVELS YOUR PERFECT HANDS HAVE MADE. 👏👏👏 YOU SAW their worries about tomorrow.
If their hearts were a window that they could look through, oh the pains and scars they would see. What a cruel fate the skin gives as a mask to the inward pain. But the skin couldn’t cover THE SUFFERING YOUR ONE AND ONLY SON BORED on the cross as PAYMENT for all our sins because HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS ALONE HAD THE MERIT TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF YOUR HOLINESS. Indeed, ONLY HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS IS SUFFICIENT TO SAVE us from this present evil world as evidenced by Mary's song of praise. "And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour." (Luke 1:46-47 KJV) Awesome thanks to YOUR GREAT PARDON for being easy on the heart. 🥰
They have seen a lot of crazy things done in YOUR NAME. For example, the father of lies futile attempts to make crooked the right ways of the LORD to turn people away from faith in the WORKS OF JESUS CHRIST ALONE. How can anyone bear the thought of his or her life story detracting from the GLORY AND HONOR KNOWN TO BELONG TO CHRIST ALONE? As a consequence, YOU ARE A MYSTERY OF GREAT MYSTERY to them. Despite this conviction, YOU ARE MINDFUL of them as evidenced by the fact that YOUR JUDGEMENT is not speedy, allowing them to pursue the desires of the flesh.
They are aware of hypocrisy in religious assemblies that like to be seen and heard. In addition, secular education teaches that there is no right and wrong, if GOD exists there is no way of relating to HIM, and moral standards shift according to the whims of fashion. Therefore, their minds are conditioned to question everything this world has to offer including “THY POWER THROUGHOUT THE UNIVERSE DISPLAYED.” They have accepted the heavy burden of dealing with the troubles of this life and seek to know another way, YOU THE GREAT COMFORTER TO ALL who did receive YOU as their personal SAVIOR. Still, YOU have shown them NEW MERCY every day with each thought they make and each breath they take.
Unfortunately, like the prodigal son, we are all guilty of wandering far from YOU LORD because the negative experiences of our lives tend to build roadblocks to the TRUTH. As time marches on, JESUS CHRIST HELP them to identify the way, truth, and eternal life (that is YOU). Since to know and follow your SPIRIT is more exciting than any 007 movies, and YOU DELIGHT MAKING the ordinary into extraordinary. As time marches on, JESUS CHRIST MAKE them understand that there is no way around YOUR TRUTH, and that there is something about YOUR NAME. As time marches on, JESUS CHRIST HELP them defeat in their minds what is false in YOUR EYES.
LORD GUIDE their thoughts to know that the path of sin is hard on their hearts for the purpose of crying out to YOU to know the joy, peace of having the heavy burden LIFTED by THE GOD OF PEACE I AM, and ANCHOR their souls in THE HAVEN OF REST. In other words, LORD use the storms in their lives to get a hold of them to trust YOU and believe. In truth, YOU ARE THE JOY that seekest them through pain.
LORD HELP their fainting hearts to believe that YOU, who was slain on the cross over 2000 years ago has the POWER TO CHANGE lives today through the INSTANTANEOUS GREAT FAVOR from GOD to the house of Israel made known in believers by YOU to make YOUR NAME EVERLASTING. 🥰 For as the statue liberates the citizens so the cross liberates the soul. ONLY YOU can calm the trouble waters of the mind when one admits to wanting salvation from one’s sinful nature, JESUS IS LORD, and believes in the heart that GOD RAISED HIM from the dead TO LIFT the heavy burden of sin's guilt away from the heart in accordance to YOUR WORD found in Psalm 51:1-10 KJV. 👏👏👏👏👏👏 O, the wonder of it all to experience within the flesh the feeling of a tree being cut back/pruned in order for it to grow stronger and more beautiful after meditating on the words of said Psalm. 🥰🙌
LORD MAKE them know that ONLY YOUR HOLY SPIRIT, through the experience of a new birth within believers, can prevent the family circle from being broken because THE HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE YOU HAVE GRANTED means a chapter of their lives is decided. Creation sings the rebirth song for them yearly, through YOUR PROMISE of springtime, giving rise to the idea that by the mention of YOUR NAME flowers grow, and the desert blooms again. 🥰
LORD GUIDE their understanding of words to use to come into YOUR PRESENCE with an honest reverence of WHO YOU ARE to experience the beauty that time can't erase YOUR WISDOM resting on their faces. LORD STRENGTHEN their determination to never waiver in efforts to search for YOU because the wages of sin is too high for anyone to pay. Additionally, THE KING OF KINGS is needed in their hearts to learn how to expand their capacity to love for YOU are LOVE in any language. 🥰 Once they learn to speak it with boldness through YOUR WONDERFUL COUNSELING all the world will hear, and know that LOVE is the language of their hearts. So LORD, KEEP KNOCKING on their doors until they let YOU in to know hardships and struggles will end with a GREAT CELEBRATION WITH YOU. 🥰🙌
If one believes faith cannot be forced, YOU WILL GIVE that individual over to the stubborn heart to follow own counsel which will surely fail him or her to the extent that the punishment will last forever found in Psalms 81 NIV. Given this, I pray that YOU WILL MAKE that person see that this feeling is wasted for a world in which we become strangers as we age, gives us thrills instead of peace, aims to solve a problem but creates another, and unrest surges with each passing generation. Shed some light into their broken hearts for YOU ARE THE GREAT JEHOVAH, THE GOD THAT HEALETH thee.
Lastly, LORD when they call on YOU in earnest prayer to come into their hearts to be born again (repentance manifesting itself in a changed life), I pray that YOU WILL GIVE them the blessed assurance of their salvation because nothing breaks YOUR HEART, or tears YOU apart like when they cry from the trials of the devil who comes to slander, falsely accuse, steal, kill & destroy. Only by drawing nearer to YOU LORD will put them on a path to a glorious one way trip winding upward to YOU where pain is not welcome because the heart will never break anymore. For ONLY YOU UNDERSTANDS our tears since YOU LOOK at the heart, while humans look at the flesh.
O LOVE that will not let them go. When they don't have the strength to try, and have cried all they can cry hear their hearts that need YOU more today than yesterday. Many thanks LORD for speaking TRUTH in our lives TO BLESS those who are not offended by THEE. LET YOUR WILL BE DONE because YOUR LOVE ALONE CONQUERS everything by WAITING for them to cease struggling, and finally surrender to YOUR EMBRACE to learn about YOUR LOVE AND PROMISE TO TAKE CARE of your children exquisitely. 🥰 Since... "at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore"... (Psalms 16:11 KJV), and the nail print for them to know YOU by answering the following question. How did CHRIST LOVE people into a relationship with HIM? 🥰

Well, I would argue he's not especially "eloquent" which word has connotations of suave persuasiveness, fluency, forcefulness and confidence. That said, the fact I didn't notice any of those qualities should not be misinterpreted that I thought he didn't do a good job.
Au contraire - while in many respects his very measured, almost ponderous approach might indicate an interviewer struggling to fully appreciate what was being said or indeed losing his thread or lacking the processing power to strike at the heart of the issues, I feel if anything the faltering manner hinted at someone less interested in showboating, ego and image - rather at someone humble and serious who would rather extricate from his subject the most relevant information in a way that made sense and avoided the accusation of bias. While it may even have LACKED a bit of high drama, I would much rather that than the sturm und drang of a session where there's an obvious agenda and where the "personalities" become more important than the discussion.
If anything the interview's low key and modest timbre - far from eloquent - was what made me listen more intently (like paying extra attention at a pianissimo section of a symphony).
Due to the cacophony of emotions and opinions flying around at the moment, I decided not to be one of these people who, for not very edifying reasons, have seized - mostly very loudly - on the opportunity to trot out whatever interpretation on events they themselves want to put on it because it best furthers their own, tired old personal, political agenda WITHOUT understanding what factors - historic and present - impinge on the latest events... most commentary I've heard especially on established news sites is blatantly pushing one.
I am the first to take it to heart when I hear of Injustice. I get furious when I hear Noam Chomsky focussing only on how the Russo-Ukraine war is relevant to sinister and disingenuous American power and corporate greed. I don't doubt there's an element of that but I also think that there are a large numbers throughout the world for whom the sensation abounds that Russia's actions go against everything most regular people feel is right. Every fibre of me hates that Putin - a snarling, resentful bully - has confected this whole mirage of smoke and mirrors about the catastrophe of the collapse of the USSR, not because he has especially warm feelings for Communism or grandiose notions of the "rights" of Mother Russia to be this great sprawling, pregnant Empire - but because he wants Russia to be surrounded by a chain of crapulous, zombified, semi functional half-states, that basically provide a ring of protection around his own cesspit of a country where a third of the population are seriously alcoholic, another third still use an outhouse (the second you get out of Moscow and St Petersburg, the entire rest of the country stinks of shit as people go toilet in little potties and commodes which they mostly empty out the window wherever) and the other third are actively engaged in outright fraud and corruption, most particularly their president who COULDN'T GIVE A FLYING FUCK about ordinary Russians and who certainly wouldn't cross the road to "rescue" one from "Nazi persecution" in Ukraine. The entire business has only come about because he looked weak in 2013 when the army, police and riot control squadrons failed to quell the will of the people who made their views explicitly clear what they thought of their Russian glove puppet president - Yanukovych - not signing into law an economic policy that had been voted for by an overwhelming majority and was a seismic shift away from Russia and inexorably towards Europe. Crimea was, in short, a vindictive act of petty, vengeful retaliation and to "show Ukraine who was boss". And having laughably failed to take the whole country inside a couple of weeks in February last year, was doomed to press on grimly - Putin, as far as he is concerned, literally has no alternative. He may be a venal, hate-filled, resentful, power hungry gangster - filled to the brim with shame, personal inadequacies and insecurities - reduced to begging from and cosying up to the absolute worst regimes on the face of the planet including Iran and North Korea - but he KNOWS it's got frig all to do with "protecting ethnic Russians who found themselves outside of of Mother Russia's apron strings" - if anything he has to live with the fact that every day HUNDREDS of Russians are sacrificed on the altar of his angry little selfish aims. To project himself as a Godfather and his country as this almost mythical, ancient force that the world has to pay attention to, to fear and revere. And the irony is, he knows this long war he has found himself saddled with, has shone a brilliantly illuminating spotlight on the tragic, pathetic, backwards, jealous, corrupt and rotten country whose suppressed and fearful population live like filthy medieval serfs because him and his repugnant cabal of oligarchs have systematically raped Mother Russia in her battyhole for every drop of oil, every child's balloon of natural gas, every gram of gold, platinum and titanium and every diamond and sapphire and callously used it to silence his enemies and buy his allies' loyalty...
As for the Palestinians and their Arab backers - mainly Iran - that should tell you all you need to know. The whole premise of this "poor, put upon tribe of innocent people just trying to live" is utter bullshit. The STATED AIMS at the beginning of the Hamas Constitution is the "annihilation of the Jews by the power of Islam". Palestinians DON'T WANT peace. They want "total victory" over Israel and the death of every single Jew.
FAR TOO MUCH energy is being expended on all these politically correct causes and the nuances of various groups' perceived disadvantages and boohoohoo woe is me look at how repressed I am. Even in the USA, for decades there have been liberal policies doing nothing but extending the hand of friendship, acknowledgement of the past and huge amounts of cash pumped into programs to provide equal opportunities for all. In the same way, Western governments in the face of the most extreme provocation have not risen to the bait and if they have - like after 9/11 who can blame them? Just like if Israel has on occasion, not seemed like a very civil neighbour. Israel IS SICK of pussy footing around and trying this and that when it knows it has got the Palestinians - in other words and ayatollah's footsoldiers - on its doorstep. These people are bastards - they don't care about their Medieval religion - it's all a bloody great hypocrisy, purely a cover to allow them to use it as an excuse for the suppression of women, of blind hatred towards LGBTQ people and, like Putin, to prop up their corrupt, lazy, useless, cruel, resentful little regimes. And it IS all PURE RESENTFUL JEALOUSY. They CANNOT STAND that they're all swarming around with their superstitions, their heat and dust and sprawling poverty and Jesus Christ the SHEER EFFORT of repression and justifying themselves by blaming absolutely everyone and everything except themselves. It's always "the Jews, America, imperialism" blah blah blah oh spare me. The Arab world for hundreds of years was the centre of the world for Maths, Astronomy, Philosophy and Logic - all the world's knowledge was at the fingertips of Arab scholars which Fate and circumstances had bequeathed to them. The ancient universities of Bologna, Paris and Oxford learned everything they knew from the Arabs!!! Yes, the fucking Popes were a pain in the arse - for five hundred years stirring up trouble. But considering the First Crusade instigated by Urban II was in 1096, I'm sorry but even half a millennium of belligerence is itself now 500 years ago. And anyway, by the 16th Century it was the Ottomans making all the running and marauding up to the gates of Vienna still in 1683. They lost, by the way and have been in decline since and that is what this truly is all about. They HATE it that Jews all over the world - including Israel - are renowned for their prudence, strong family bonds, intelligence, talent and work ethic - they make their Arab neighbours look like peasants.
Just like Russia, this was Palestine's doing. Way back in 1948 King Farouk of Egypt lamented the setting up of a Jewish state - and when it happened do you know what he said? "The Arabs will drive the Jews into the sea" Well I hope that him and his successors and their allies can bloody swim😂😂😂 so now let every single Arab face the consequences if they want to go up against Israel.....

This is the factual history of this conflict and most of us Israelis know it very well. I think the problem for us is knowing that the Palestinians could have had peace with us years ago and this would all have been over if they only wanted it to be over. Meanwhile , for years we have been losing family and friends due to wars , conflicts, and terror attacks inside the country! People here are simply traumatized . How long can you stay left wing and advocate for peace before you say damn it I’m fed up? because of the Palestinians leaders unwilling to do peace with us and recognize the Jewish state, and would rather slaughter us at every chance they’re given. So there come a point when the Israeli society says f*ck it, and maybe the best thing to do is to occupy everything, both the West Bank and Gaza because otherwise we will lose our lives here with growing hatred for Jews, especially when we are surrounded with enemies that want to kill us and sometimes succeed by doing so. The question is how many times more, since 1948 should we try peace until we understand it’s not achievable?

Give control of any land to the one who can make it flourish in this manner all will be nourished.
Arabs remind themselves that when Caliph Omar conquered Israel in the 7th Century he met 10s of thousands of Jews already living there. And in the 19th- 21st centuries Jews increased there possession of the land by purchasing land. Also Israel gained land from repelling the Wars of Annihilation that the Arabs launched
against Israel in 1948 and 1967.
You don’t get a second chance to launch more wars from these lands .
Losing your land is a relatively minor penalty to pay for murder and attempted murder.

Please, please invite Dr. Morris to another conversation about the current situation. @@noahfletcher3019 what I’m talking about is that Coleman is literally brainwashed. He literally admitted that he went on a paid for trip to Israel and was spoon-fed their propaganda. He literally spent a couple of minutes trying to defend the idea of propaganda. Before admitting that he was the subject of Israeli propaganda(his words not mine) he literally said he was reluctant to speak on the topic because he doesn’t nearly know enough about it. One of his justifications for the propaganda was that he “was aloud to ask questions “?!? How does someone who literally admitted he doesn’t even know enough about the topic to feel comfortable talking about it on a show even know what questions to ask? Let alone to the people who are literally paid for a living to propagandize him in the first place.
And now he Is literally spewing the very same propaganda as if he is somehow an authority? Literally asserting false things as facts.
Then he proceeded to present Morris as some “left leaning” objective historian of Israel. Talk about misleading. Especially to an American public. For one the terms “left” and “right” barely have any significance within the US. Now he is essentially conflating the American left with the Israeli left?!
The mainstream Israeli left is essentially pro apartheid. The mainstream Israeli right is pro ethnic cleansing.
      Disappointing to say the least.

    • @MD-hg9dq
      @MD-hg9dq Před 6 měsíci

Dr. Morris is forgetting to mention that the British had promised both the Arabs and the Jews that they would be freed and independent of British and French rule. The Arabs were promised Syria but after the war the British gave it to the French and they took over Iraq for the oil fields. The British used the Arabs to defeat the Ottoman Empire that's why they had promised them independence. They lied and this is one of the reasons why Arabs hate the west and don't trust us. On top of all that, the British supported a new Jewish state in Palestine therefore kicking the Arabs from their homes and establishing the now called the state of Israel.

Good overview. Impossible to cover all elements. And agree/disagree with some of Benny's thoughts on how Israel should have acted post 1967. But that happens in life and politics.
    Some additional points.
1920 San Marino Conference/Agreement. Gives essential context as it was not just the Palestinian Mandate that was being split up. French Mandate was also. Israel was not the only country being created around this period. Iraq, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon were created.
The only Geo area created under this Mandate system that has proved controversy was the Mandate for Palestine. An area of land created under the exact agreement as the others.
It was decided in 1920 in San Remo by the then league of Nations, that this area of land would eventually be for the Jews, as they were the indigenous people of that land. No one disputed this, at that time.
Iraq,Syria, Lebanon were created not based on population numbers but based on how all new states were created around the world.
International law has a principle in place for the basis of what the borders of a new country should be based on.
It's called the UTI Possidetis Juris Principle. For creating these new States. ( It uses the last geopolitical borders of the last entity that existed there. It doesn't basis it on population demographics).
And in Israel's case the last geopolitical entity to exist before the land was occupied by various Empires, was the Jews. Hence why when you hearn it's Palestinian land' and they quote UN. The UN has no legal or historical basis to support it. UN decisions do not equal International Law. Why only with Israel. And non of the others. That will be the Jewish aspect.
Secondly under this 1920 mandate. All of Palestinian Mandate was offered to tje Jews. The British then went against this and gave 75% of this land and created Jordan (made up mainly of Palestinians). So already Jews lost 75% of land agreed. Then were happy to have 30% of what was remaining before 1948 War.
Regards Palestinian refugees. Could have been useful to mention that after 1948, 800,000 Jews were forcibly thrown out of neighbouring Arab Nations. (In fact all Arab nations have ethnically cleansed their land of Jews post 1948). Unlike what Arab Nations did to Palestinian refugees. Israel absorbed these Jewish Refugees into the population. Arabs have kept many Palestinian's in refugee camps.
Third and final historical point. After WW2 there were tens of millions of refugees around the world. All were absorbed by various nations and integrated under UN refugee plan. However UN created a unique organsiation called UNWRA for Palestinian's. And created a unique status for Palestinians where the refugee status is passed on to their children. (No other refugees have this status. Normally refugess children just become citizens of their host nation. Not so with Palestinians particularly within their Arab Nations hosts. Hence why there are now zero Jewish refugees out of the 800,000 made refugees from Arab nations but Palestinian refugees have actually increased from 700,000 to over 6 million..
Sad for them and for Israel who has to deal with this political creation. But the Palestinian leaders of both PA and Hamas have become Billionaires through the aid money given and squandered.

Trust me, these individuals are completely steamrolling the facts and they are NOT impartial even for second. If you consider yourself an impartial observer, it becomes necessary to ask why a nation should relinquish its territory for the sake of accommodating another group of people. And yet, when the affected party disagrees with the one-sided decisions made by colonial powers, they are inexplicably labeled as villains. It takes a certain level of delusion to deny that Israel is essentially a colonial enterprise backed by Western powers. Israelis engage in mental acrobatics to rationalize their position, conveniently neglecting to mention that the so-called "peaceful solution" offered to the Arabs was nothing more than an ultimatum: "Live with it." Let's not forget that Israel has gradually annexed 90% of the land, all while claiming to seek peace.

I’ve gained new understanding of some key points from this enlightening interview. I’ve long wanted some context to modify the ubiquitous extremist viewpoints. In historical context, I feel some mistakes were made by one party or the other at every step. But today, those missed opportunities have gained a momentum that seems unstoppable. Dr. Morris is a pragmatist, and I respect that. But the parties have made little, if any, progress toward a pragmatic solution, and the trend is toward even less realism. The issues are being magnified to a mortal fear of losing for both sides, obviously an impossible situation.
    Very much appreciated, Coleman.

We can sympathize with both the Israeli and Palestinian people and judge their governments for these mass causalities. At the end of the day though, we all know that Israel is still the most peaceful and prosperous nation. In Palestine, I just don't know how many are truly terrified of Hamas or are supporting them. Thanks to you both for such an informative and thoughtful interview. I had not heard of Dr. Morris before this and am now curious to learn/read more from him.

Dr Benny Morris does offer a balanced view of the situation. He has become more pessimistic about the future over the years. His major fault is not having access to Arabic original documentation (as a non Arabic speaker, unlike Prof. Mordecai Kedar, who is more right wing but is an Arabic speaker).

Thank you for offering this conversation, most people watching mainstream media don’t have any idea how things evolved and how complicated it has been at every stage. Maybe hope exist if the Iran somehow change first?

      Good question.
I’m a pessimist so I don’t see hope between Israel and Palestine alone, neither of them have a way out, have a choice. So I wonder if there’s any cracks in the powers behind. I haven’t studied at all to suggest anything, just some blind hope.
Iran (and others) is using Hamas and Hezbollah to hijack Palestine civilians, provoked Israel and wanted to cause as much as Palestine casualties as possible, seems like this is their strategy, and unfortunately Israel takes the bait (from their point of view maybe they just don’t see any other choice). This war could give China another chance for democratic gain in the middle east (though I think they will screw up again), and give Russia a chance when the US is distracted from Ukraine. It’s hard to imagine those dictators didn’t coordinate in some way but even they did not, they certainty found synergy in the two wars now and start to have bigger ideas. I don’t think things will work for them in the long run, but the world will see some hard time before these evil regimes get exhausted, I think they will.

Dear Coleman Hughes, thank you for hosting this important discussion with the illustrious Dr Benny Morris. Am a bit dismayed at the obviousness of some of your questions i.e. those questions regarding the goals of the Palestinian army but otherwise a great interview. Thanks again. Be well. Klvn
