Breakdown of the Palestinian Refugee Problem in 20 seconds: The year is 1947 and the UN announces its Partition Plan for Palestine, also known as resolution 181. Promptly, the Arabs residing in the region open fire on Jews. Eventually a war breaks out and the exodus of 700,000 Palestinians ensues.
This has turned into one of the most controversial debates in modern history. What caused the Palestinian exodus in the years 1947-1949? There’s the mainstream Zionist narrative, more or less that Arab leaders urged the Arab population to leave. There’s the mainstream Arab narrative, basically Zionist ethnic cleansing. And then, there’s Professor Benny Morris. Now buckle in because this is slightly more nuanced than the stuff you might be used to hearing.
Professor Benny Morris is the professor of history in the Middle East Studies department of Ben Gurion University. He is the author of several works including The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem, 1947-1949. And, he’s a pretty cool dude. So we are thrilled to join him in his home this evening to talk some history!
These 2 hosts open with saying they're only recently and vaguely acquainted with both Morris' work and the topic of 1948... and then go on to constantly interrupt and contradict a world-renowned historian on the topic when he alludes to things they don't like. How embarrassing.
Yeah, these two guys should just sit down, shut up and ask thoughtful questions without interrupting. They are trying to talk like it’s a first date with a girl they are trying to impress, and failing. If you don’t know what you’re talking about, just shut up. So annoying watching this crap.
Really great talk, the dude in the black though (on the right) was quite distracting though, he seemed to always interject mid-convo with subtle underlying motivation to push the professor/author into a biased view. Was this supposed to be a subjective talk or him solely talking about history?

Yes he's an incredible bonehead... Imagine having to ask if the Armenians are Christian... Or getting prepared to get upset if the sacred word 'holocaust' gets applied to their genocide.

I read the comments and dived into it at 25 minutes and lasted for about a minute of the guy to the right interrupting constantly. Tiring.
“Is expelling 50,000 people including men, women and children from their villages (based on their ethnicity) a war crime?” Geee let me think such a hard question. 🤔
It's amazing how they downplayed the bottom line, deliberate announced ethnic cleansing, and deliberate unannounced ethnic cleansing, and the most important factor that they did not let them come back and finalized their ethnic cleansing, and they were still trying to say, you know that happens in wars. To be so close to the point and have all the facts and still miss it reflects the sever lack of morality. No execuses left.
Why were they expelled? It wasn't for no reason. If you want to tell a story you need a complete picture. You can't cherrypick events and come to accurate, truthful conclusions.
This happens a lot in war especially when the militias are mixed in with civilians it's very hard to distinguish between the two. The Arab militias also committed atrocities against Jewish civilians, so you have to look at it in context. It was a mistake by the Israelis to not let Palestinians return. One idea behind no right to return or may have come later was to use it as a bargaining tool for peace treaties. In other words, they offered Palestinians, under vetting conditions the right of return in exchange for peace treaties but it failed. Ultimately it was a mistake since it obviously contributed a lot to the refugee problem and gave them more justification to completely reject Israel as a state.
@ahyaok100 Good points, but I disagree with classifiying the denial their return as a mistake. They were a potential 5th column and would have destroyed the fledgling state from within. Short of a peace agreement it made no sense to allow them back.
@@Santirata The Israelis probably couldn't imagine that this would lead to essentially an endless refugee status carrying on generation after generation thanks to guys like Arafat.
The guy on the right is a clown. Just wanted to Benny to reinforce his talking points and views. Obvious he doesn’t know the actual history but just talking points. Surprised how objective Benny is, kudos to him.

Benny makes the statement the Arab leadership did not encourage Arabs to leave, and then gives a number of examples of Arabs doing just that.
Before Benny was a historian the way the story was told was in such a way that all of the displaced people were said to have left either of their own accord or because Arab leaders told them to. That is what he was calling a myth. One of the reasons he is a famous historian is because he brought to light documents and histories which showed that the old narrative was false and that Israel actually did at times force some people to leave
@brianmacadam4793 Benny gave the examples to show that the general myth had a core of truth. These examples were the exception, not the rule; but, such exceptions begat myth. So the original generally applied Israeli narrative was false, but that does lead to the Arab narrative, that a generally applied ethnic cleansing was the rule
