From Afghanistan to Gaza - A Story Through Hell with Rory Stewart

  • My guest today is Rory Stewart. Rory Stewart is a British politician, diplomat, and author who served as a member of parliament from 2010 to 2019. He held several governmental positions, notably as a Secretary of State for International Development in 2019, and was known for his extensive work in Afghanistan and Iraq. Rory has authored several books, such as "The Places In Between", about his solo walk across Afghanistan, and his new book, "Politics on the Edge", a memoir from within.
Rory and I talk about what he learned by walking across Afghanistan. We talk about the war in Afghanistan and what lessons Israel might take from it. We talk about Brexit. We talk about why the Scandinavian model is not appropriate for Britain. We talk about the culture of the world of politics. And finally, we talk about why Rory is so passionate about GiveDirectly, which allows people to give cash directly to the people in the developing world.

I'll never forget finding you (yes, Coleman, I speaking directly to you bc in my head you're reading this) the first time maybe I read an article by you in Quillette like 5 years agoish. I find whenever you hear a pro Palestinian advocate on social media or TV refer to something the Israelis have done or said, and how evil it is, if I go look at what was in fact said or done it turns out to be the most unbelievable warping of what actually was said or happened. Why do Palestinian advocates do that? Palestinian advocates also totally twist definitions to squeeze in what they say Israel has said or done to demonise Israel, like “genocide” or “apartheid” or “holocaust”. They question whether anything bad done on behalf of the Palestinian cause was actually done or is just Israeli propaganda or was even done by Israelis to themselves. It’s beyond just intellectual dishonesty. If people question any of this they shout the person down with short aggressive responses like “Israeli propaganda” or the critic as being in the pay of Jews/Israelis or as “genocide deniers”, and call upon the critic to “educate themselves”. The Israelis do advocate for their position and there must be a particular focus. But there just isn’t that same total departure from any facts or shameless fabrication to demonise the other side. Why is that? Do people buy Palestinian advocacy? How will there be peace on this basis?

He probably believes and correctly so that a more typical American President, would never have the mental apparatus and cultural background to convince the Iranians to sign a deal that would dismantle their own nuclear program. At the same time having China & Russia on board. That latter factor alone was huge and would be impossible to achieve nowadays.
Once the Iranians realized the Americans had no intention to uphold their end of the deal, they slowly pulled away from their obligations. The point is that Obama was the only U.S. President who could've managed to pull it off. Your typical American President would impose more economic warfare and more military solutions.

    • @wendyfay16
      @wendyfay16 Před 7 měsíci +1

I haven't listened to the podcast to which you refer, however I think that a One State solution if both sides can put their weapons down, respect each other as human beings with humanity ... & understand that they would both win if they could agree to live peacefully together. Perhaps it could be something like the UK .. or the USA or Australia. Separate States who have some responsibilities, and with a 'Federal' government for the major responsibilities. Otherwise, there will have to be a 2 State solution with an agreement for self-determination for the Palestinians. Although it was extremely unfair, had the Balfour Declaration been adhered to by the Israelis, allowing the Palestinians to live in peace wherever their homes were, all would have been peace at that time. All of this pain & heartache, absolutely unnecessary disabilities from the violence of war, and all of it is totally unnecessary!
All over something that we are each guaranteed to return to one day ... 'ashes to ashes & dust to 'dust' ...! We all want to belong to, and perhaps live in our 'homeland', but people these days travel all over the world ... & often, settle on the land that isn't our 'homeland', but that doesn't mean that we need to live on our homeland in order to 'belong'. Our 'homeland' is the place where we were born, not somewhere that our forebearers lived 2,000 or 3,000 years ago. Most people don't even know where their forebearers lived 2 or 3 thousand years ago! I know that 4 generations ago & back to the late 16th century, my forebearers lived in England & Ireland, but I expect that we all descend from the Romans & Greeks, or even Egyptians, Africans, etc. No-one can go back 2000 or 3000 years ago!
If all of these people, especially the 'settlers' were to return to 2,000 or 3,000 years ago, I doubt there'd be any measurable Israeli blood left in them! Humans have travelled all over the world in the last few thousand years ... & not only will they have changed their ancestors, but possibly their religious faiths too.
To have waste 100 years, all the joy & happiness that has been exchanged for land ... to which we shall all return one day ... and for what? for misery, grief, hatred, cruelty, whole lifetimes, filled with so much grief. and of that there's more than enough to be shared between both the Palestinians & Israelis ... In fact, grief seems to be the only thing both sides have in common ... because if it was truly peace, they would have returned to 100 years back when they both lived & worked together in peace & harmony. In fact, who's to say that Palestinians & Israelis didn't intermarry when they lived in peace! We know that Love often Overcomes the Barrier of Blood .... Look at Romeo & Juliet! It may have been a figment of Shakespeare's mind, but it's not unheard of. So, the Jews who are fighting the Palestinians could just as easily be killing members of their own families.
If Northern Ireland can manage to find & live together in peace & harmony, then there's NO REASON WHY THE PALESTINIANS & ISRAELIS can't live together in peace & harmony! It's A MATTER of the WILL & the CHOICE TO DO SO!

@@wendyfay16 your sentiments are lovely, but there is zero precedent in the region. The Levant isn't the UK, the culture is very different and not understanding that was as many have pointed out one of the big catastrophes with Iraq and Afghanistan. A two state solution keeps being suggested because everyone who has looked at a solution for the last 70 years has come to the conclusion that peaceful coexistence is not a viable solution. The level of hate is just too great. Perhaps if Jordan and Egypt could take over some land?
Either way as I see it the Israelis had to do something in response as the Americans did after 911, but almost anything they did would be doomed to make the situation worse. And killing this many civilians has pretty much doomed the region for generations I'd think. You have to assume that was hamas's point.

What he failed to articulate in this interview is that removing us from the political institutions of the EU whilst maintaining economic ties would have meant the UK remaining in the EU single market and customs union. This would have meant continued freedom of movement for EU citizens to enter/settle in the UK. It would certainly show good faith if both sides were to return prisoners & hostages. I have no idea how this will turn out when Netanyahu seems to want only to kill in the name of the hostages. I've heard several podcasts, including interviews with NGOs who have said that Hamas has offered to return the hostages for a ceasefire, but Netanyahu refuses a ceasefire until all Hamas members are killed. That seems an impossible goal to me, especially as there's no way he can possibly know Who are members of Hamas ... and where they are. Is he also going to bomb Qutar, as it's said that the most senior Hamas members are there?
I believe that the only goal of Netanyahu is to remove ALL Palestinians from Palestine until both Gaza & the West Bank are called 'Israel'. He's already been bombing the 'safe' parts on the outskirts of Gaza, as well as bombing areas of the West Bank, killing several people there. He's herding the people from Gaza into the West Bank so that it will be easier for him to kill them all like fish in a goldfish bowl. He will then use the excuse for bombing the West Bank saying that Hamas fighters have gone there with the people from Gaza in order to hide from the Israeli forces. I'm only an old'er Australian woman, & I've worked out this game plan, so how stupid does he think the rest of the world is?

@@drwhatson I certainly know a lot about Britain.
But I know very little about video games, nor do I care.
Perhaps a brighter person than yourself might have asked: "Do you know anything about video games?"

if possible, please create chapters. That whole spiel at the top is pretty esoteric if you didn't watch last episode.
