It's interesting seeing a diesel conversion. I only just realised the old engine was petrol. Also its interesting seeing an old pile of junk being worked on as compared to that classic fairline. This is just nuts and bolts basic engineering without the worry about making a masterpiece. It's far more accessible to most amateurs.

    • @SomervilleMetalWorks
      @SomervilleMetalWorks Před 6 lety

He might call it a pile of junk but a gu patrol is probably the best off road vehicles ever made especially with factory diff lock and a td42.

Hi Al. Watched your work on mcm. Nice to see someone with experience working on vehicles , instead of the usual kid who has just bought a new welder , never welded before and is trying to teach other kids how to weld and that sort of rubbish. Ive owned 3 td42s over the years and have learned a few handy hints along the way.
Silvertop motors like yours with vac for brakes of the alternator have crap / dangerous braking. Do youself a favour and put a set of ceramic pads on both ends. Genuinely gives 30% better stopping power.
The std inlet manifold on the silver an blacktops are only gd for around 120-125 rear wheel kws. After that they start to become a choke point. At higher kws, cutting the manifold and adding a lot more volume to the top is required. Plenty info on forums about that.
I put a 75mm thick 300mm x 600mm intercooler on my last one and they help alot for even daily driving. U can fit them stealth in front of the radiator if you attack the inside of the grill enough. I understand tho that front intercoolers arent Ideal in many parts of Oz coz of kangaroos etc. (im kiwi)
Gd you have reasonable electric fuelpump to supply the injector pump coz thats an area of possible issues as well. about 4psi is a happy thing.
3" dump off the turbo is essential as well as 3 inch mandrel bent exhaust to the back as well.
I fitted a pre turbo pyro to a temp guage on the dash and its real handy for street tuning and keeping an eye on things under heavy load and up hills. Im very happy ith my TD05-16G Large from ufi. Im 58 but if I was 30 again id be chasing 175RWKWs plus.
I put a boost gauge on the dash and use a cab adjustable bleed valve to adjust boost.
Mechanically ok and well maintained 4.2s both silver and blacktops are happy with boost into mid 20 psi range in stock trim. Both have piston squirters but the blacktop system is a little better coz oil can go into the piston across a gallery and return to sump. slivertops have a gd hole to cool the piston top but not quite as effective as the blacktop. silvertops have a bit heavier gudgeon pins but the smaller blacktop ones never give any problems unless the motor is hydrauliced with water or some other catastrophic problem. Both engines run noticeably better on synthetic motor oil. The blacktop motor(94 onwards has an 8kg heavier block than the earlier silvertops like yours. Plenty of 30psi boosted silvertops out there have never had the head off tho! Ve pumps like a degree or 2 of timing advance above factory spec according to a guy I dealt with who is converting 10 patrols a week in WA.
Battery to battery box earths can do and often work loose. They are worth checking. Steering shudder at 95 to 105kph is real common. Its usually the front pandard loose or worn ends. Bottom of the steering cover balls theres a plate with 4x about 8mm bolts hoding them on. Try taking 1 bolt out and it will let out any water that can accumulate in there.
If freewheeling front hubs start to grab and make a whirring noise unexpectedly (happened to me on 2 vehicles) just take the freewheeling hubs off, fill them with your favourite thin gear oil (i used atf) an slap them back on as quick as you can without losing too much oil. It will fix the hubs from trying to engage (usually coz they have been overgreased) and add a little extra lube inside the steering balls and to the cvs and help keep the steering ball covers lubed. Btw u can cut the new ball seals and fit them (cut at top)without having to spend hours dismantling everthing.
GU/GQ Nissan front spring bump stops are a joke, they are too long and usually break off and end up sideways inside the coil spring looking like a lost dildo. Just buy some second hand ones off any 80 series landrover. They fit great an work way better. Jus cut about 30mm off the top of them YMMV or u get reduced travel and flex in the front end.
Theres a lemon motor to avoid out there. Its the blacktop non turbo motor made around 94/95. They have weak rods and light pistons. They are great for a non turbo build(who wants that?) or great for a not more than 15 psi turbo build (who wants that either?) Ive never laid eyes on one but aparently the undrilled and untapped cast fitting for turbo oil drainback is a dead giveaway.
4" filter and piping to the turbo is the way to go. 3" for the rest of the way is fine.
If you are going to do alot of hi speed rough rd driving then remote reservoir shocks is the only way to go. Our kiwi rds a a bit smoother but my non remote 6 way adjustables barely do the job and do fade.
These motors start to wake up nearing 20 lbs boost, then by 22 they are starting to go gd.
    GD luck with the build
    R

    Hi,
Be careful of the oil feed to the turbo. Not all of those small screws in the engine take the oil feed directly from the main oil gallery. There are 6 of them: Four of them are located just behind the engine front plate that holds the engine cover. The other two are located at the engine left hand side (the side of the camshaft location) at the same plane of the no. 2 and 3 main bearing. The same one you've taken the oil feed line form.
The two that are at the left hand side near no. 2 and 3 crankshaft journal feed from oil that comes out of the main journal to the camshaft journal. The oil, in the first place, comes from the main gallery after the filter and pressure relief valve to the main bearing at the unloading side of it. Because of the inherent utilization in the bearing design, the oil is metered through the main bearing into two bath:
    - to the rod bearing through the crankshaft hole
    - to the camshaft bearing through a straight hole from main to cam bearing.
So, these two screws go directly to that straight drilled hole between main and cam bearing.
The four screws at the front of the engine are as follow:
    - RHS, the upper screw goes through block, then to main oil gallery, then to idler gear, then meats an upward hole for engine head lubrication.
    - RHS, the lower screw meats directly to the hole that supply oil for the no. 1 main bearing.
    - LHS the upper screw directs to the no. 1 cam bearing. But it is closed by the bearing its self. Used to drill the oil line for that specific cam bearing.
    - LHS the lower screw, I do not know about it.
The screw that you took oil supply from is going to affect the corresponding rod bearing oil supply as the oil is metered by the main bearing design. Demanding addition oil requirement will affect the metered oil supply by the main bearing to both: the rod and cam bearings. This may cause a spun rod bearing and/or crankshaft failure. Furthermore, any reduction in oil pressure at the rod bearing will not show in oil pressure switch.
It is better to use either of the RHS screws though I prefer the upper one as it takes oil directly from the main oil gallery. Both RHS screws have non metered oil supply and no dependency in it, i.e., whatever happen to the oil supply is going to show in the oil pressure switch.
In addition, a lot of dirt is behind these screws. It is better to fluid them before connecting an oil line.
    Good luck,

No, Al explained it when the world was using leaded gas the opening was that full size, like diesel inlets, and when they switched to unleaded they didn't want people putting leaded gas in them. For what ever reason that has stuck even after they ditched the leaded gas

black69camaro2344 thats true but the system was retained. Even here in the UK the diesel nozzles wont fit into a petrol inlet. Because we have a high ratio of morons that cant seem to tell the difference. Usually they drive 4x4s that never see off road action.

Gotta love the BSP and NPT stuff. Like the whole world decided lets use the British system but the Americans HAD to be different and make their own. They hate the fact they never invented it. Its as if they try to make their lives more difficult! Language, metric system, Centigrade, fuel RON etc hahah!

    • @dylnbxtr

Cal M actually, the imperial system was around long long long before the metric system.
