SKR Mini E3 v2 0 Install - Complete Guide

  • There is a lot of talk in the 3d printer community about the SKR Mini controller and the benefits it provides, so I wanted to test that out for myself. In this video, I cover the installation of the SKR Mini E3 v2 end to end using my Ender 3 Pro. The process may seem intimidating at first, but if you just sit down and work through it, it's actually not that bad at all. I think the process is actually easier than trying to upgrade the firmware on the stock board, but it does cost a little more money. Overall I am very pleased with this upgrade and think you will be as well.

      Hi. If you have the bltouch you only need to manually level the bed like every month or so, or if you start seeing issues with the print. Assuming you have the bltouch, you can change the grid size from 3 to 5 to give you the 5 by 5 mesh (or 25 points).

    Hi, thanks for the link to the installation video, just a couple of questions, which version of BL Touch did you install? I have a 3.1, and on the BTT Github site, there are BL Touch firmware's labelled-: Firmware BL Touch and Firmware Ender 5 Bl Touch, I am assuming the first is for an Ender 3, would you concur with the assumption?
    This Installation is much easier than the Creality BL Touch Kit which I bought to save me the time and effort of editing firmware, on my CR-10 I edited a firmware for BL Touch and had no issues at all and I now wish I had done the same for this Ender 3 but I did at some point intend to upgrade to a 32-bit board for this printer and if all goes well I will get one for the CR-10 also

    • @3DPrintscape
      @3DPrintscape  Před 3 lety

      Thanks, Are you talking about for the connectors or shielding on the wire itself? I do recommend heat sinks on the stepper motors if you are going to be running them for long periods of time or in hotter environments. That said, in most cases they are not critical. The only time I think they would be critical is if you were using dampeners that spaced the motor away from the frame.

      @gordonclaridge1626 Před 3 lety

      @@3DPrintscape ISorry, I was talking about the power wires. I have seen videos where they cut the tinned portion of the wires off and just twisted the wires and screwed them down. Others actually crimp ferrals on the ends of the power wires. I hope this makes sense.

    • @3DPrintscape
      @3DPrintscape  Před 3 lety +1

      Ah ok, I got what your asking now. Honestly for a low wattage 3d printer like the Ender, I don’t think it makes a difference at all as long as you can get a good connection. I don’t fell going through the effort of changing what’s there would buy you anything. For high end audio, I like to use oxygen free copper with good banana plugs but that’s a different world entirely.

I disconnected my z-stop on the Creality board (v4.2.2) when I installed BL-Touch, and plugged wires from the BL-Touch into the Z-stop socket. Is that how you do it on the SKR board? The video makes it seem like you're not connecting those last two wires from the BL-Touch.

      Thanks for the reply, and for the videos - you've helped make my SKR install much less frustrating than my initial Ender 3 pro experience. BTW, I have v3.1 of the BL-Touch, and I didn't have to invert the two wires on the z-probe side; it works just wired straight. I suspect there are multiple combinations of main board/bl-touch/firmware versions that each require slight tweaking, as is usual with 3D printing. Now to level my bed and get started on projects!

    @3D Printscape: I did the exact same update to my 3 Pro. I got the combo with the TFT35 E3 V3 but the V1.2 board. I had issues getting the firmware to compile correctly so I ended up doing almost all of my setting changes via terminal through pronterface. The biggest problem I have had was a loss in quality which I know is firmware related. as I got the best quality with it when I used the current firmware on BTT's github. But the .bin's they have do not have stealth chop enabled so I had to enable it manually. I am curious to see when you get the screen if you can get the default temps to hold on the touch screen side with the 2.0 and TFT35. For me, in marlin, it's correct with how I configured it but the touch screen side does not reflect the same settings. I may just go ahead and buy the 2.0 if it all works out for you alright with the touch screen.

      @3DPrintscape  Před 3 lety

      Hi. I plan on using the firmware that’s on the BTTs Github page, im hoping it already has some of the setting defined there. If not I will just go through and set them. I hope to get the touch screen in a couple weeks, and will do the video after that. Are you saying that the screen doesn’t show you the current temperatures?

    • @djtriggerfinger
      @djtriggerfinger Před 3 lety

      3D Printscape it shows just fine I typically tweek my temp settings for the pre heat functions and according to BTT if you change the config in classic marlin it is supposed to carry over into the touch interface but it does not so I have to always manually set the temp up to my desired temp when I preheat. But if I go back to classic marlin my preheat it is set to what I changed it to. It’s like the touch interface does not look at the config h

    • @djtriggerfinger
      @djtriggerfinger Před 3 lety

      @@3DPrintscape The temp in really minor anyway the quality is the biggest problem. Since I installed the board I now am dealing with a lot of "zits" and stringing on my prints that were not there with the stock board. So I have been grinding away at the settings trying to iron it all out but so far the closest I can get to even stock quality prints has been with the pre-compiled firmware on BTT which does not have all the settings in place to make it printer silent. I do wonder if it really is because of it being the 1. 2 board. I have literally removed the 1.2 board and put back in my stock board now 3 times in the last week and the quality is night and day for me. I know that a lot of Reddit posts are saying the compiling issue is a windows 10 update 2004 issue so I may just try it from my mac and see what happens but regardless I am thinking that maybe I should just switch to the 2.0 board and see if that fixes a lot of these issues.

    • @3DPrintscape
      @3DPrintscape  Před 3 lety

      Oh wow, I bet that is annoying. Once I get the firmware updated, I will run some more tests on my side. The accuracy should improve going to the TMC2209 drivers, unless there is something wrong with them of the firmware. I have seen a lot of people complaining about the TMC chip having issues or being burnt out on reddit, so its possible that’s the issue. My PC is still on 1809, so I will let you know if I run into issue compiling the code. I can also try to compile it for you as well.
      I haven’t been able to upgrade past that because I’m running VMware workstation 12 pro and the update wants to remove it. If the 2004 upgrade is causing issues, my guess is that it would be around security but in general I haven’t seen many issues reported by the developers where I work.

Maybe polarity doesn't matter on some heated beds but I did not wanted to take the risk, so I switch the cables to what the board pin out stated. According to the pin out the left side is the negative and the right positive so black/red on the left and red on the right.

    I know this board is marketed as making a 3d printer quieter and the stepper motor are much quieter, but the main board electronics fan is a lot noisier. Plus you didn't say anything about an update for the BLTOUCH so, I take it we don't need to do one, just plug it in....well, besides fixing the negative settings for the probe. I would love an all in one video. Just a short one saying like, "If you do this to your ENDER 3 Pro..." as in adding the SKR Mini E3 v2, touch screen, BLTOUCH and the Micro Swiss Dual Drive all you really need to do is fix this configuration_h setting or what not. Only thing I am having a problem with is the BLTOUCH nocking when it auto homes. May be do to I don't have the offsets set right yet. I only break out compiling custom firmware and installing the touchscreen into separate videos. Obviously, you can call it whatever you like however only one will never be challenged and the other occasionally will upon running into another old fart like myself who knows better. Just in case you still think I'm making this up here's something to disuade you:
