  • r/Idontworkherelady In today's episode, OP is an older woman who visits a fitness center because she needs her exercise machine repaired. The manager who works there just assumes that OP is there for a job interview, and then immediately starts acting condescending to her by saying that old people shouldn't work at a gym. Not only is that insanely rude, it's also illegal! OP doesn't stand for and gets this entitled jerk fired!

(Reposting my comment here so you don’t have to find my explanation of the story) Okay like straight up. That second story with the old lady and gym equipment is kinda bullshit. Imagine you’re the employee right, and you’re standing there working with a bunch of big guys applying for a job, your focus is getting them through considering it’s important and you have such a long line. It’s not your responsibility to talk to every customer there, that’s the other employees responsibility. So when this old lady approaches you and asks for paperwork without mentioning anything else or maybe asking if she’s talking to a customer service employee, then you would be a bit confused considering the stereotype around people that exercise (predominantly men) and around the people that work at gyms or equipment stores (also men, who are usually very well built). So you tell your boss “hey I think she might be confused, let’s pull her in back, ask some questions, and see if she knows what she’s applying for.” Then when you start asking questions the old lady hits you with some attitude and starts questioning you and saying you don’t actually know anything about the equipment you sell. I guarantee that’d start to annoy you, she’s a classic Karen. Now granted, the questions they asked weren’t technically correct, but, the intention behind those questions and concerns, from a business, and health aspect, where very legitimate. Old people, not just women, have frail bones, that’s just a fact. And she would be working in a building where she would regularly be lifting and move plates and equipment, ranging from 25-100lbs on a daily basis. The second she gets hurt, which she most likely would, as would any old person, she gets workers comp and the company gets sued. She also most likely, to them, doesn’t look like she could hold her own in an environment. They worded theses concerns very poorly, but they were valid concerns, both for their business, and for her health. Also. As we all know. When you write a story about yourself you exaggerate a bit to make yourself out to be the clear “hero.” I’d be willing to put money down that these guys doing the interview did not have half the attitude that she portrayed, nor did the big guy deserve to loss his job over valid concerns. Sure they handled it poorly. But that doesn’t mean this lady didn’t cause this to happen. Who walks into a respected business, sees a BUNCH of guys filling out paperwork and assume that they’re all here for repairs. If there’s that many people needing repairs after a 2 week quarantine, then this company and their products would be out of business for being garbage. She could have very easily asked “hey is this customer service” like all people do when they’re in a building they’re not familiar with

Like, I’m pretty sure if a woman comes into an interview, and then says, “I’ve been exercising longer than you’ve been alive. Blah blah blah.” There’s already red flags to the interview, so at that point, it’s not even discrimination.

OMG, the last story killed me. I had a supervisor once when I was working as an assistant at an elementary school library. This "librarian" was something else. We had a library database that was online and super easy to use, even children use it. It even had an easy web address to remember. This "librarian" would spend all her time on the internet to "buy books for the library", basically just filling her online cart with "cute books". She did that the entire shift, every shift.
After 4 years of working at that school she came me as I was working on my computer and asked me how to get to the library database. I was a bit confused at the question but I replied with the web address, as I thought that's what she was asking for.
She looked at me like a puppy trying to understand human speech with her head tilted to one side and a confused look on her face. This made me even more confused. Then she said "no, how do you get to the library database?" I stopped what I was doing to further look at her and try to understand the question.
Basically, after about 5 minutes of questioning I figured out what she wanted. I had to show her HOW TO GO ON THE INTERNET. It's the year 2012... not 1998.
I kid you not... I literally had to close my window, show her how to click on Chrome, wait for the window to open and type the web address I gave her and show her the database. SHE WAS TAKING NOTES, PEOPLE.
She's been working there for 4 years. She is in her late 30s, has a Bachelor degree from university, she has TWO children (who are probably alive because of her husband), she's MY supervisor (works half the time, does nothing all day, and makes more than twice as much as I do) and she's that DUMB? How are people that incompetent get such good jobs?
Mind you, no one believed me when I told them this story... and I don't blame them. Tbh, I couldn't believe it myself had I not actually been there to experience that. Sometimes, I still think I hallucinated that entire scene due to stress of working under such an incompetent person.
She ended up working there for three more years before she was finally let go. Reasons unknown ;)

An example would be asking a pathologist about something going on with your 5-year-old. Sure the doctor can extrapolate based on what they know, but they also aren't a pediatrician, so it would be best to talk to a pediatrician, which is what most ER doctors do when the illness isn't something obvious like Strep throat or an injury.

I get to the corner street where my brother told me to meet him, then I hear somebody trying to open my door. At first I thought it was my brother then it was just a guy and two women. I roll the window a crack to let him know that I'm not his Uber, but before I could say anything he asked me if I was. Then I finally got to answer that I was not his Uber and I'm off the clock. Alright, here’s a quote from some other’s guy comment.
“(Reposting my comment here so you don’t have to find my explanation of the story) Okay like straight up. She could have very easily asked “hey is this customer service” like all people do when they’re in a building they’re not familiar with.”

I think I'd scream if I had to deal with stupidity on that level, well, I do, but the ones I run into carry guns and knifes. No... They're not law enforcement. They're the ones who get arrested.

I was at a sci-fi convention, and one of the guest celebrities was an actor who had played a doctor on a scifi show in the 90's, and before that a doctor on a soap opera. He said the difference between scifi fans and soap fans was that the former were better grounded in reality. The actor said that if a soap fan didn't like your character on a show then they hated you the actor as well, because they could barely tell the differnce between you and your character.

I’m first on sight! ITS A MIRACLE! Coffee and RSlash in the morning is the prescription that most doctors recommend to obtain sanity during this time of quarantine and... lets be honest a lot of hell.
God bless you RSlash!! And hi Ugo!!
Edit: wasn’t first after all but still! Love RSlash videos

Tbf to that younger gym employee, there's nothing wrong to alerting your supervisor when someone unusual turns up. If it had've been a case of someone with dimentia having a supervisor present and expiditing the process to make sure everything is okay isn't a bad thing. The younger guy clearly had no problem with her applying even if he was taken aback. The other guy deserved to be let go tho

The one about discrimination is actually quite powerful, because in most places, it's actually illegal to deny someone of a job opportunity based on gender/age. I have a friend whose mother has tried to get a job, but she has been denied so many times. Workplaces need to work on that...seriously.

2nd story she could have cleared up in 2 seconds if she had just said "im here to get my machine fixed".
People need to stop assuming that others are mind readers and then getting infuriated because they aren't.
    Edit:
She stands in a line for people applying for a job. Makes assumptions about everything and then blames them for believing she was there in line to apply and she never once said anything to the contrary.

She wasn't standing in a line for people applying for a job. She was standing in line to wait her turn to talk to an employee about her maintenance issue. The employees are the ones who made an assumption. They should have asked her if she was there for the interview when she first arrived. This entire thing is entirely on the stupid employees, not the customer. I can't see how anyone would be dumb enough to claim otherwise.
