    The Range Rover is now 43-years-old and this is our review of the latest 2013 model. Not only that, but we've also brought along one of its main competitors, the Porsche Cayenne. In the British corner is the fully-kitted £94,695 4.4-litre V8 diesel Autobiography with 334bhp and 516lb ft of torque. The £87,653 Porsche Cayenne has a 4.8-litre petrol V8 with 500bhp and the same torque figure as the Range Rover. Let battle commence.

    I recently went through the decision process between these 2 phenomenal vehicles and would agree the Rover is tons more comfortable on the road. That is if going in a straight line is your thing. I ended up choosing the Cayenne turbo first because a car in the shop isn't as comfortable as one on the road and in my opinion the Cayenne is much more reliable. After driving both, I could not get over the drive capabilities of the Cayenne, no comparison.

    I just bought a Porsche Cayenne Turbo after selling my 997 911 Turbo. The Range Rover for me is for guys who wear turtle necks and Tweed jackets for stodgy trips to the weekend estate. Not to mention the reliability of the RR is the stuff of legends as they seem to spend an inordinate amount of time in the shop, forcing their owners to drive one of their other five cars.
    The Porsche just says let’s go find a nice back road or hit the Autobahn for quick run up to 175 mph. I’m curious if the Porsche that was tested had the optional air suspension? I’ve been told and seen on other videos that can be quite soft when it needs to be. I won’t take delivery of mine until later this week so I can’t say from experience.

    This review couldn't be any more bias. "Wafting" and performance are complete opposite yardsticks to begin with. So, I am scratching my head how can you compare comfort with speed and handling ? While I agree the Range Rover is a lovely place to be if you want a relaxing drive, you cannot deny the Porsche Cayenne Turbo or Turbo S are the undisputed King Of SUVs when it comes to performance. Plus, the Range Rover is hugley expensive, I just can't get over the fact how a diesel Range Rover can be more expensive than a Porsche Cayenne Turbo which apart from the Turbo S is at the top of its range ? And the Cayenne is not small at all, the difference is when you drive the Range Rover you really feel like you are driving a truck whereas the Cayenne feels more like a performance car. I would take the Cayenne Turbo any day and twice on weekends !!

    • @carbiify
      @carbiify Před 10 lety

      You want a Cayenne because its feels like a performance car, but not everyone wants a performance SUV or turbo's, regardless of price. Some buyers, might simply want comfort, and a luxurious look and feel. This reviewer preferred the Macan over the Evoque, even though the test was mostly on road, which favours the Macan. That off road test, was very weak . The Macan was more expensive, designed to be sporty, and had a 3L V6 engine compared to the Evoque's 2L 4cylinder. but the majority still thought he was fair. Bias works both ways.

    • @Rascallucci
      @Rascallucci Před 10 lety +1

      carbiify Let's be honest here, most reviewers will tell you is unlikely the buyers of such high end SUVs will take them offroad. Even if they did the chances are it wouldn't be some hardcore offroad proving grounds. But, Sutcliffe's review of the Mccan and Evoque was far more objective in my opinion when he just compared performance between the 2 cars. The difference of the 2 reviews is here between the Cayenne and Range Rover right off the bat he didn't want to talk about the performance and essentially just went straight to comfort or to be more precise he wanted to use comfort as the defining yardstick. You said some people may prefer comfort, I agree and I don't have a problem with that, but by the same token some people may prefer performance too. So, my question is how could Sutcliffe say "if you have to choose between the 2 cars it has to be the Range Rover" ? On what basis ? That to me is bias. He could have said if you want comfort pick the Range Rover or if you want performance then pick the Cayenne. Fair ?

    • @carbiify
      @carbiify Před 10 lety +1

      Alex Fu
      With the Evoque V Macan comparision. He still should have given both a proper off road test regardless of what the owner will do with them. They are both 4WD, so work them over in the rough, but I have to agree with you with this test. He should have summarized the capabilities of both SUV's, which would give the potential customer a better idea if they had to choose, based on what they need. A draw would have been fairer.

    I would just like to point out that the new Range Rover is significantly lighter than you suggest it is in this video, even though you list it correctly in the stats. The weights for the new Rangie are:
    3.0 V6 Diesel - 2160 kg
    4.4 V8 Diesel - 2360 kg
    5.0 V8 Petrol - 2330 kg
    Making the Cayenne 190kg lighter not "half a tonne less" as Steve says in the video.

    They're still a magazine first, so what little tidbits we get on CZcams are just highlight reels filmed while they test for print as far as I can surmise. I agree that the pairing of the Cayenne Turbo and diesel Range Rover is inappropriate. One could make the counterargument of price similarity, but the Autobiography editions add a hefty premium to the Range Rover's price tag. Of course the Turbo is going to ride harsher. I would assume a V6 or diesel Cayenne is probably more comfortable.

    I think with a Range Rover you're somewhat left wanting for actual competitors. The Cayenne's design brief was always very different to the RR. Whilst they compete on price, I would guess the buyer profiles are rather different.
    The only thing that's comparable to the RR would be the Lexus LX570. But again, the LX is built off the Land Cruiser so doesn't have the bespoke design of the RR and it is also quite a lot older. Will have to wait and see what a new LX will be like for competition.

    but if you wanted something as fast as the Porsche, wouldn't you just get the V8 petrol in the Range Rover?

    true - the Range Rover sport would have been a better choice in this comparison, but I still think that the conclusion still sticks, but that is just my personal opinion and it may vary from person to person. Wish that they would redo this once the sport comes out though...

    You can open up two tabs on your browser and look up specs and compare them. But the question answered here is how those all come together and how they were put to work in their vehicles. For what they are, you would have to be a Porsche-phile, or performance is just your "cup of tea", to want the Cayenne. The Range Rover simply has Luxury down solid, real off-road cred, and a much more dignified look. The Brits would pick British. But the fact is, the Range Rover is the better luxury SUV.

    Even good old Clarkson talks shit about all American cars on his show but later talks about his top ten cars he would want to own a Corvette is on his list. It's just to keep his audience happy, and being a show on BBC this is his list of best cars. British, UK, European, Japanese and then American. Regardless of how good they may or may not be.

    Diesel engines are getting more economical too. In the near future, the internal pressure will increase 2-3 times and that's going to help at gas pumps.

    actually unlike most big modern SUVs, the Cayenne is pretty much on par with the RR when it comes to off road driving. It has gone tons of electronics to keep it going through the toughest terrains. RR may be slightly better at coping with the rough stuff but the Cayenne is better than you'ld expect it to be.

    merc gl ml,jeep grand cherokee,lexus lx,land cruiser these are some of the choices,if u say range rover is the best luxo offroader suv can u please prove this with honest video with its competitors and i know its its handles like Chelsea tractor in the road and i think originally land rover used a jeep chassis to develop them and at last if i want british cars i would have xj,xf,db9 and many more not the rangie(even though its one of the best looking suv)
