  • Have you ever invited another detectorist on one of your metal detecting permissions? Have you been a guest on someone else’s permission? Perhaps you’ve wondered about what you should or shouldn’t do in either of these situations? Well that’s exactly what I asked several other metal detectorists. Here are their suggestions regarding the “Do’s and Don’ts of Metal Detecting Permissions”.
Also please do me a few favors. Please share your tips and feedback in the comment section below. Also please take a moment to check out by the video contributors social media sites. Happy hunting!

    Great Job Buddy!
I'm glad someone made a video that covers more core Metal Detecting Ethics. Everyone does the same fill In the holes, ask permission and what not. But I loved how you got other Detectorists involved and covered the more in depth ethics. Like not returning to a site without your buddy, building a connection with the landowner and the moral of what to do with finds. Very informative!!!!

This should also cover public locations. If I find an old spot out on public land and invite my hunting buddy to detect it, he will either ask to go back, or at least say, hey Greg I was thinking about going back to that spot, or hey I think WE should go back to that spot. Common courtesy for sharing information. That's how we all do it up here. It's just simple respect for the person that put the effort into researching and finding the location.

Hi All My Fellow TH'ers This was a very good video and I must say you covered most of the items that I do my best to do on every site that I have. The biggest issue that I have is those that think it is OK to rebury junk finds! I make it my mission to remove all the targets that I dig. I also remove any broken glass and surface trash. I recycle as much as I can but the metal all goes to the Scrap Metal dealer which puts cash in my pocket. What a great way to get paid for doing what I love doing anyway. The only metal that I do not take to the Scrap dealer is aluminum. It just takes too much room to get any return so I do curbside recycling. The 2nd biggest issue is one that you covered here and that is claim jumping. You invite someone to your site and they go behind your back and return to the site without your knowledge. The 3rd issues I have is when you find an area that you plan to invite your group to search at a future time and you tell the group where to search on a following Saturday but the one AZZ HAT decides to go there on a weekday while everyone else is at work. They then announce that 'I couldn't wait for Saturday so went back on Monday and found a dozen Civil War bullets!' WTH! The plans were set up so the entire group would have an equal shot at finding something. Needless to say I do not TH with this person anymore. My 4th issue is with the ethics of lack there of that some have. Our group has an agreement that when we are on a site and one person finds something we 'Call Out' what we found. 'Bullet!' 'Button!', 'Coin!', we also call out our junk finds; 'Nailed again!', 'Aluminum!', 'Pull tab!', Etc. We had one person that at the end of the day when we were comparing finds pulls a group of Civil War bullets and several Large Cents out of his pocket! It is not a contest to see who can find the most, we don't compete with one another. We do compare finds. We look at this hobby as something fun and enjoyable to do as well as share it with a Friend or more! After a few times of this person doing this to the group we cut him from our group. It is not that we were jealous of anything like that we just like to provide everyone with a shot at finding something. I wish everyone a Bucket Lister in 2024! I found my first Silver in 2024 this past Saturday 01/27/2024. I dug a very nice 1773 Spanish Half Reale with a Mexico City Mint Mark! ;-)

Some great speakers on this one. Let's do another. Perhaps the next one could be on something like 'When should you invite people out to your permission site'. It's a real test, because you want to give them a good time and you want to keep your best stuff in reserve. How do you set the bar? Thoughts to the team....

I buy a bunch of V nickels, Indian head pennies, and Buffalo nickels and I give one or two away to the homeowners of permissions. Everyone loves an old coin and they are great examples of what we are actually looking for. People really love getting them.
