#1 mistake of most newbies: leaving open holes or not properly filling holes so that it looks like you were never there. Ruins the opinion others have of detectorists and makes permissions even more difficult to obtain.
Relace your divots!
Actually this is one of the best educating videos about metal detecting I've ever watched. Thank you!
I bought a medal detector from harbor freight for $49 I swear to you it works just as good as one of those expensive ones... I found alot of stuff with it...
Dont be ridiculous!!!
thanks for the great advice, i've been detecting for a year now, using only a garret 150, ( yep second hand for a cheap price) i wanted to make sure i was totally committed before buying a decent machine, even with the lower range model i have found some amazing objects of interest and a ton of coins, yes i pretty much have to dig nearly every beep but at least it keeps me fit. i personally prefer to be alone, and the thought of joining a group doesn't appeal to me, i have interacted with a few detectors in person and found them quite dismissive/snobby when they find out what machine i use, but then you get people like that in all walks of life. keep up the great work mate.

@charles hedberg thank you for your tips!
Love your channel! Great content and quite entertaining - nice way for me to keep in touch with the hobby when itâs too cold to go out detecting in South Dakota! I did want to say that we bought our second at max off of eBay and not only was it a great deal but Garrett supported us with the warranty 100% even though we did not buy from a dealer. Garrett has the best service department ever, hands down, and I love the fact that they are built in the USA!
Thanks for sharing that. Do you make video records of you days out and your discoveries?
Love detecting with my grandpa, we've been doing this since I was a kid! I had no idea there was a whole world of detectorists! The intro to this video and finding the horseshoe made me laugh!
Thank you Lindsey. I really appreciate your message x
That's a decent video with some good advice within. Some FB pages are friendlier than others, as long as you don't bombard them with youtube clips every five minutes of course. We were all beginners and I'm sure we all asked those questions.

So what did you find when you cleaned those two "coins"? I feel you should have made the video a minute longer showing whatever came out of your tumbler. New subject: I started with a Garrett ACE250 which cost me $347 at the time, and found nearly $5,000 in the first 3 years (coins and gold/silver rings). I have much patience when it comes to metal detecting and I don't want/need to know if the coin is copper or silver or whatever. I'll dig it anyway, so I don't really need an expensive machine with numbers all over the face of it.
NUMBER ONE TIP !!!!!!!
Do not use salt & vinegar to clean copper pennies!!!!!
My first day out, I found an 1885 "indian head" penny (US).. wasnt going to get rich, but it was a nice find.
I Googled "how to" & seen the method (s&v) repeated 10 times, did it & ended up with a piece of acid eaten copper...
I'm not sure of the best method to clean coppers, but I know the worst...
I'm just getting ready to buy my first machine, and you're advice is much appreciated! Thank you!
For the best deal in detecting equipment contact Pete at www.lpmetaldetecting.com 01635 597975 Tell him the man with the hat sent you
What are you thinking about getting Egypt Cat? I started out with a. Whites Prism, been swingin the ATMax for the last four years, and now just ordered the legend from Nokta Makro. Love Garrettâs product quality and service but wanted a simultaneous multi frequency machine to up my game.
Very informative . Great vid Stephen .
So true, you buy cheap and won't last but a few weeks, and yes always seek permission first... and if a friend invites you to there permission don't be a night hawker or snake in the grass and go back without them that is just wrong!
Nice video, thank you for sharing. Happy Hunting.
Nice one Stephen, good advice for anyone who's new to the hobby đ And we've all made one or two of those mistakes no doubt đ
One minor correction my friend. You no longer need to actually apply for and download a certificate from the Crown Estates website. Permission is now automatically granted. Thanks for the useful video and good balance of discussion with live digging.
Thank so much +pedromansky and I appreciate your time to leave a comment.

On the CRown Estates map, what areas are allowed and which are not? I can see areas in purple around sites such as ports and estuary entrances, are these the areas not permitted and everything else is ok? I did email them but theyâve never got back to me
@@BrassMonkeys Rob Areas in purple are Crown Estates Owned
pedromansky ok cool thanks. Can any beach be detected though without permission from local authority?
@@BrassMonkeys Rob, most councils have their own rules so you would need to check. In Bournemouth the council are fine with beach detecting but forbids it on any other council land
Good advice! Thank you for sharing.
Love it thanks for the video....
Great video, thanks for the tips!
i disagree with mistake #2..dont go out and spend alot of money buying the best machine..so many people have done so ,found out this not a hobby for them. and you cant get back the money you spent..i started out with a $45 harbor freight detector..and still have it..i find just as much with it as the whites or ace 400..you can find really good detectors for cheap at yard sales cause people went out bought high dollar machines .either couldnt figure it out or didnt like the hobby

I agree with both...the cup is just at half!!!!!đ
I bought what I "thought" was an inexpensive mid-grade machine, which was actually a no name low end machine (150.00us).. was frustrated. It had an LED screen, 4 disc., several tones etc.. but would show 25 to 90 on the same target & not good depth...
I returned it immediately!!!
I bought another, AFTER RESEARCHING CZcams VIDEOS, & spent $200.00. I bought a Quest x10.. it made all the difference....I would have quit if I stuck with the first.
So I'd say, don't buy "cheap" & dont go over your head to be discouraged by finding 0.32 & lots of pull tabs, on your first 3 trips out, & then selling your machine.
As for rule 1, there are many people walking around on the beaches with detectors, searching for coins and jewelery, so yes, from what I've seen this can be quite profitable, especially during the summer :)
It is very profitable but I personally don't do it for that reason. It's an amazing hobby with lots of interesting finds and relics. Cheers

Hi stee you ok, I'm looking at a good program for pasture good depth. I used deep and put reactivity to zero and used 8khz and on to full tones. I found a target witch was a old penny the xy screen gave a ok line. I switched to standard hot and it sounded better. I have got use to the hot program so I'm finding it hard to go over to deep. Can I change settings to go deeper on hot program. Am I weight to think that theres no one on this planet that can give a definitive answere to metal detecting settings. I'm beginning to think it's just made up to how you feel happy with ha ha. I like hot but I dont find anythin bellow 4 inches. Unless the fields I've been on haven anythin on them bellow 4 inches.
KEEP that question for my next stream matey
BUT the HOT program is not the best in my experience. Try the ULTIMATE and put it on full tones
@@TheManWithTheHat
It's there a ultimate setting video on CZcams budy.
czcams.com/video/Iem3gM8gPUo/video.html
Ultimate program settings are:
Based on Deus fast preset program.
Discrimination = 0
Sensitivity = 95 but knock it right down if you get lots of little audio spikes especially on wet soil.
Frequency = 17Khz on dry or 12Khz on wet
Iron volume = 3
Reactivity = 3
Audio response = 4
To use on 3 tones, set
Tone #1 202HZ
Tone #2 202HZ with 0 threshold
love your ideas
All great points geared toward those considering metal detecting as a hobby.

Hi Penny, you are right about the National trust, however they do not own the beach, they may have title of the land ABOVE THE HIGHT TIDE MARK, but certainly not below it. The intertidal zone belongs to the Crown, not the National Trust. You will need the automatic permit but that takes two minutes on the Internet . Good luck !

Some good tips there. Unfortunately, the Crown Estate Foreshore Permit is now defunct. The current arrangement is something called a 'permissive right' to metal detect, introduced a few months back. You don't need to apply for or download anything, but there is a list of conditions. Including an expectation that you will sell any valuable finds and give 50% to the Crown (after deducting expenses).
Thanks for doing this video and sharing with us. Great tips that are useful. I am giving you my subscription.đđđđđââ

Another piece of good advice is to ALWAYS recheck the hole after removing the first metal object. #coinhatgiveaway
So I don't forget. #coinhatgiveaway and #coinringgiveaway. And now for the important part. Great information! Much needed even on this side of the pond. I started out with a cheap RadioShack detector that cost $200.00plus back in 2000. But I needed exercise and had seen a TV show about metal detecting. They still do videos to this day, King George and RIngy. But I was bitten. I did a little hunt in my yard. Got busy, got sick and gave it up. Restarted after seeing another video. Now I know better, have a better machine, but I still use my old Discovery 3300 and know the tones and do very well. I do it for exercise and the thrill of the hunt. Being disabled, it is my way of moving and bending and walking. When someone asks me what I found, I say EXERCISE. Joined a club but they only wanted to dig relics of the civil war, would not mentor newbies and were cold to women unless they shared knowledge about a mysterious find no one could figure out. So we ( my husband is my hunting partner) left. And now we speak to whoever asks us about detecting and I spend a lot of time on research and gaining knowledge about various finds. Thanks to folks like you, I'm a better detector! So in your cake hole.
Budget for an aftermarket coil straight up~ ( of course make sure you are going to stay in the game of course,~ as they are not cheap but will transform your detector ! I put a coil=tek on my CTX and it was as though I had NEVER been to some of my regular sites ! A-MAZING!!

Very good advice, I am struggling with permissions right now...LOL But the permissions I do have I spend many hours a day, when out, learning my machine. I recently purchased an AT Pro and it is definitely different than my first machine. For about 4 weeks I have been exploring the machines abilities and learning its tones. A massive topic Mr Hat. Perhaps this could be ongoing ? Ask any digger , and you will get a different answer as to what you should and shouldn't focus on, but as you touched on in tip 4 , obtaining permissions is at the heart of this hobby.
I have yet to see this covered properly by any CZcams channel, and certainly not the managing of those permissions.
Five good points, and well covered in your humble opinion :o)
Point 6, eat home made cake instead? ate Pj

I thought I bought one of the best detectors for how much money I had at the time, however I found out that it was mediocre. It can find stuff down 9â but I got discouraged, and havenât gone for a long while. I really want to get one that is %100 water proof so I can scan rivers and beaches. What are your thoughts? Brands?
+Dean Pratley The only experience I have in detectors are whites, XP Deus and ORX. If you want to completely waterproof I would use the ORX
Thanks for the pro tip!
Just started metal detecting two weeks ago and have xterra 505, and this week found a florin 1933 on a new virgin field in West Sussex with a detecting club? What you are not mentioning is anything about , threshold, noise cancel, volume, tones, ground balance , or sensitivity ? They are all very important as you could have a ÂŁ300 machine and a ÂŁ1,000 machine and the ÂŁ300 machine could do just as well depending on the person who is using it ! Its very confusing when you start reading all the instructions about all the different settings etc, but that is one of the main things in detecting as if you get all those things correct then you have more chance of finding something interesting !! Also why are you moving the detector so fast ? Slow and low is what I've been told by a guy who has been detecting for 40 years!!
Jozef Kis modern machines donât need as much setting up as they did 40 years ago.
Good advise, by the way are you going to the baseball game in London and see the New York Yankees play?

my advice is dont buy an expensive machine until you are sure youre gonna stick with it....a cheapo machine will find metal too.

@@TheManWithTheHat Also don't wear cheap jewellery, avoid quicksand and finally don't use in Fort Knox.
Congrats Snaprhed2000!
Excellent video, Stephen. #coinhatgiveaway
The live chat day when I was out before hand, taught me not to ignore things my gut tells me might be worthwhile. I kept getting an iron grunt (remember, I have dig or don't dig), but I noticed when I swung the coil to the side, I got my better, but almost not there, higher tone. I walked away and it kept bugging me. I ended up going back to that sound and it was a 1964 Silver dime. It has done it before with old Wheat Pennies as well. And we all know, you can get an amazing tone on ANY machine, thinking you are pulling out a coin.....all to find out this is where the beer buddies hung out and it's full of pull tabs! HA!!!
Anyway, friend, as always, loved your video. Currently doctoring chigger bites all over my arms and don't even know how I got them, so watching you flop in the grass makes me itch more!! Love and best wishes!
# 4 would suck bigtime ,plus dont you have to give what u find to government in UK? Great video subscribed

When I first started I "bought the wrong machine".....ended up in a field with a feckin dishwasher.!!!
You left out a big tip. My pet peeve is to watch some one dig up a very old coin and then rub it with their grubby sandy fingers. You could have a coin with potential value and totally devalue it. Wait until you get home and clean it properly. In the US I have searched schools and churches with good success, not that hard to get permission an long as you respect the land. Yes, I have found coins worth hundreds.

Pin pointing......... Didn't have pin pointer in 1979... I didn't buy one till 2012, hardly ever use it. You do know a metal detector can do a great job pin pointing?
