- Just as Dooku is about to escape, Yoda (Frank Oz) confronts him and engages him in a lightsaber duel. Unable to match Yoda's speed and agility, Dooku distracts his former master by using the Force to dislodge a large pillar and send it hurtling toward Anakin and Obi-Wan. While Yoda is busy saving them, Dooku escapes.

Imagine how much fun Christopher Lee had just attacking nothing
He can just dance around with the saber prop and let the animators created that invisible character jumping around him, hitting his saber.
More accurately his stunt double. The man was just shy of 80 at that point, that was NOT him doing those quick, flashy, acrobatic movements lol
@@TheBigBlueBugofJustice I find the "lol" to be very disrespectful.
Sir Christopher Lee, at the time of his death, held the record for the most numerous movie sword fights of All Time.
@@PlayNiceFolks For your information, I'm a huge fan of Christopher Lee, he was one of my favorite actors. I meant zero disrespect to him, quite the opposite. I'm well aware of his history of on-screen swordfighting, that he was an accomplished fencer off-screen as well, and that Dooku's curved saber hilt was his idea due to his fencing knowledge. But it's still just human nature that he couldn't do that kinda stuff at that age and it is a fact that his fight scenes were all done by a much younger stunt double. In no way did I mean that as a joke or as a slight on him.
@@PlayNiceFolks you might have just won the award for the biggest overreaction ever. He was just saying it was mainly his stunt double he wasn't insulting a legend of cinema. Chill the fuck out

It's really cool.
I also love the grunts and yells showcasing this is not a natural thing he can do with his body.
He's very underrated in Battlefront2 Heros vs Villians..
The attack animations mixed with his dash can make it hard to track or keep up with a good Yoda player.
The developers even add a cool effect when Yoda absorbs Dooku's lighting with his force block, he can then shoot the lighting back out to Dooku or who ever is infront of him.
A cool little effect to make the gameplay feel more cinematic

You must see the path of the light how it is young Padawan
Yoda would've never killed him or anyone. That's not his Jedi way
Yoda was Not trying to kill him. He could have done so several times during the battle had he wished too. You can see this especially towards the end when Yoda jumps to Dooku's right and could have easily cut his head off as Dooku was taken aback by how Fast Yoda moved. That's WHY Dooku knew that if the battle went on much longer, he WAS going to get sliced to pieces. This is why he Fled but first he brought down that tower onto Obi-wan and Anakin, knowing that Yoda would save them and give him time to escape. He also knew that Yoda had More than enough power to literally HOLD his ship there had he wished to, again.. that's why he had to give him something more important to do, like saving his friends rather than letting them die just to capture Dooku.

To be quite honest with you, the moment Yoda jumps, screams, and their lightsabers clash is the most badass part of any of these films. The anticipation of the fight and the transition to a full blown all out duel very quickly is just overwhelmingly awesome. Seeing Yoda finally get to kick some ass is is just to cool….and his fighting style is wicked.

My favorite detail about this scene is that Yoda is such a powerful being with the force, he doesn't even reach for his lightsaber. He just opens his robe, sticks his hand out and just uses the force to put his lightsaber in his hand. Certified badass moment in cinema history.
Also grabs the force lightning and hurls back to Count Dooku, no other Jedi or Jedi master has been able to do that.
@@abbysands9510 well, they’re not “supposed” to be able to do that…through many books, tv shows, and movies (cannon or not), we’ve learned that Yoda had complete control of both sides. Pretty much just a certified badass

If only the lightsaber sound effect was consistent. Yoda’s green lightsaber May be a small one, but it’s still relatively a normal lightsaber. It shouldn’t sound like Luke’s
I remeber in Korea, many people had not seen original trilogy or expected Yoda to be too old to duel with lightsaber, so when he walked in, many people laughed at him. Then Yoda starts overpower Dooku and everyone was awestruck
HAH XD That's amazing
I stopped going to theaters because people don't shut the fuck up
@@junkka83 That's awesome haha. I love watching movies in theaters to hear the audience laugh, clap, and cheer. I will never forgot how there was no cheering or clapping during The Last Jedi, no one even clapped when the end credits started.
The little grunts he gives at the start make this so much better. It makes him seem old and weaker. But then he ignites that lightsaber and you are shocked 😂😂
In the novels people have described Yoda's movement in battle to be impossible to follow and he was a blur to even trained Jedi masters. I feel this scene did a great job depicting that.
Yeah he's a ball of fury and death!
I don’t know why people think Yoda’s fighting style is stupid he fights the way he does for very obvious reasons he’s small which means he has to be very agile and mobile and also he uses Form 4 Ataru which focused on acrobatic flips and kicks so I think Yoda fights pretty cool
It's because of how he was portrayed in the original trilogy. With Yoda being old, but very powerful in the force, I think a lot of people thought he might fight almost entirely like a wizard character. Him being so mobile isn't a bad thing, (and I agree it makes sense for him and is very cool) but it was something that a lot of people weren't expecting.
You can do things with CGI that you cant with a puppet.
Maybe because they expect him to take out an enemy’s legs because of his size instead of trying to jump and attack them head on.
But I thought yodas fighting style was stronger than any other Jedi.
lmao
@@jesseAC8 people don't like it because they want to shit on the move
I love Dooku in this scene. At first there's some confidence when he's facing Yoda, but even then you could see his apprehension. The longer the force duel went on, the more you could see his stiff movements and shaky voice. When he finally resorted to the force lightning, and Yoda dealt with that just as easily as anything else, that was the last straw, and Dooku immediately switched the duel to lightsaber combat, which his style specializes.
Such a comparatively short scene, with few lines, but so much of the character's thoughts were so well translated.
And Dooku with his curved lightsaber - specializing in lightsaber duels. Much to learn, my young padawan.
Fun-fact: after his duel with Yoda, Dooku told Grievous that he should avoid facing the grand master at all cost.
@@florians9949 That was some good advice that Dooku gave to grievous
I love this. The sad part is you put 10x more thought into this than George Lucas did when he filmed it lol
@@kingofdash9175 I doubt that dude, and simply because Lucas isn’t the worst at directing, it’s what he wants to include in his world that annoys people lol, not to mention that Christopher Lee was an incredible actor who studied his characters, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he was the reason for it, but either way recent Star Wars has kinda vindicated Lucas imo
I was 17 when this came out. I spent a night outside the cinema to get premiere tickets. The theatre was packed with hardcore Star Wars fans. When Yoda pulled out the lightsaber, people went nuts.

I’m actually quite bummed out that Yoda and Dooku didn’t have an opportunity to finish their duel. It was legendary.
Dooku: *calm fighting*
Yoda: *I spin*
And scream
And jump
It's the spinning that bothers me the most about this scene. Also the lack of thrusts/stabs. Spinning is a big big nono in the world of sword fighting.
I feel that Dooku's two fights here really treaded new ground on lightsaber duels. We see for the first times that:
- Lightning can be absorbed with a lightsaber
- Dooku's majestic curved hilt and Form 2
- Sabers can be duel wielded
- Lightning can be absorbed with the force.
- Yoda has a lightsaber
On top of that, the duel between Yoda and Dooku is the first time we ever see two real masters go at it. Every other time at least one person was a bit off their game or inexperienced. This fight is choreographed to be rapid, far more so than any other fight before it. It just awed you to see what lightsaber duels could be like.
Uhm, pre ep 2 we already knew that lightning could be absorbed (all hail Katarn, the true master(and ofc. the dark forces titles(inkluding outcast that is). Yoda going berserk thou was NEVER realy imaginable, even setting the stage 30 years pre his demise, we knew he was 900 years old and thought "he is all wisdom no power anymore as age deteriorates your power no matter what(Even Vegeta admited that fact that he will grow weaker at a certain point in GT)" yea look how wrong we where. I was in ep 2 like 10 times in short order and ALWAY'S the people screamed when Yoda draws his lightsaber and does his thing, basicaly showing, not telling "Size matters not". He even OUTPOWERS Dooku during that fight in sheer strength(another "show not tell" thing, back then he said "a jedi gets his power through the force")
First time you see two masters go at it? Luke and Vader? Qui-Gon and Maul?
Form I, Shii-Cho is similar to kendo or European knight swordmanship. While it possess good power, it leaves your defense wide open.
Form II, Makashi is similar to fencing. Has good offense and good for sword duel but against blasters, it is highly ineffective.
Form III, Soresu is very defensive. While it gives you tight defense, thus guarantees good survival, it doesn't have offensive skills so if your opponent has higher stamina compares to you, it will leads to your disadvantage.
Form IV, Ataru is offensive sword style. It has fast attack and effective against many opponents. However, due to its requirement for acrobatic, in small and tight space it is not very effective and it will drain your stamina. Also, it doesn't have a lot of defensive moves.
Form V, Shien/Djem So is combination of Shii-Cho, Makashi, and Ataru. Has Shii-Cho's power, Makshi's elegance, and Ataru's speed. Use your opponent's attack against you and with incredible strength and destructiveness, very good for swordsmen. However, footwork is slow thus tends to limit your mobility a little.
Form 6, Niman is versatile and easy to learn. However, it doesn't have lots of effective attack. It is mostly used by those who are weak or not warrior type.
Form 7 Juyo/Vaapad gives very keen accuracy and power. Through use of inner emotion, turn it into powerful destructive force. However, due to such ferocity, it can turn you easily to dark side.

Epic!
He kind of does a similar thing in Episode III against Sidious. It looks so heroic and noble, yet so menacing at the same time. He's drawing his blade for a duel and assuming his stance.
Dooku draws his blade for a duel as well, but flourishes it in style.
Then there's Palpatine, who violently and terrifyingly shoots his blade from his sleeve like he's going to assassinate someone. It perfectly portrays him and how he waits to strike at the perfect moment, hiding his true intentions from his enemies.

2:10 The amount of microgestures that Yoda's face has, simply magical the work of CGI artists in those years
I remember this scene very vividly, when Yoda accio'd his lightsaber everyone at the cinema was going fk wild
Did anyone notice that Yoda only retaliated with the Force once Dooku tried to use lightning - a true dark side ability? Before then Yoda was just tossing aside projectiles rather then throwing them back at him. Almost like he didn’t really want to hurt Dooku until this ultimate proof that his old apprentice was truly gone.
I remember my jaw dropping off in the theatre when I first watched this fight. It was an amazing experience to watch Yoda fighting. One thing that I like about this duel is the ending. It shows that eventhough Dooku has become a Sith, he still respects Yoda and the other Jedis. He could have taken down Yoda while he was trying to save Obi Wan and Anakin, but he decided to leave. Dooku still had respect and didn't aim for a low blow.
Or he was a coward or was in a rush to escape the Republic idk 😂
he left because he was scared out of his mind
I like those little details that show you Dooku's true character. Another good moment is his reaction of shock after Mace Windu kills Jango Fett, almost as if he's lamenting how far the Jedi have fallen. It shows that although he's on the opposing side, he still has a sense of honour.

The sound of Yoda’s lightsaber is so pure
It’s hilarious how Dooku’s difficulty level goes from easy, to normal, to hard.
2:58 dam padme 😂
😂
"It is obvious that this contest cannot be decided with our knowledge of the force."
Dooku's way of saying that he'll get his ass handed to him by Yoda if he only uses the force.
One of my favorite memories was seeing this live~.
The theater was relatively quiet during this battle...then the lightsabers were brought out.
It was like being in a rock concert.
Ok.
I get it man, for sure, Yoda fighting is well worth the standing O
The way Yoda took the lightsaber xD That's the true usage of a Force!
This must have been epic for everyone when this came out. Prior to this, I had seen the original trilogy growing up and only knew Yoda as a small creature who happened to be a Jedi Master. Believe it or not, I used to be scared of him as a kid. But now, he's my second favorite character in the entire Star Wars lore.
Seeing him unleash his full potential really surprised me and wielding his lightsaber for the first time added so much to it.
WHo is first?
@marc80s Luke Skywalker.
Sorry. This is actually the first time I'm seeing this reply. I get so many notifications on here that I don't read most of them.
The theater went crazy during this scene
I can confirm this
I’ll bet
Having to wait for 22 years just to see yoda finally use a lightsaber and kick ass.
I remember our theater absolutely erupted when Yoda pulled out the light saber.
I still remember watching this with my dad in theatres. He wasn’t a huge nerd but still loved the Star Wars movies. The way he talked about Yoda revealing his true form made me dig deeper into Star Wars at that young tween age. I also remember him reading me the subtitles off of the subtitles they gave to Jabba.
This scene was mind blowing at the time. Seeing Yoda with a light saber for the first time. Both Original and prequel trilogies were something special. Star Wars was always ground breaking even the prequels.
What's insane about this Lightsaber Duel was that upon chronological release order. There had never been a battle containing as powerful two beings as Dooku and Yoda
The closest would be Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader from Return of The Jedi. Luke was certainly powerful but not quite to the magnitude of Yoda, at least not for a couple more years. Vader also wasn't as powerful as before.
@@ezelop19 not quite? He was not even as powerful as an average Jedi at that point
@@joesheridan9451 Idk about that tbh, ROTJ Luke was like Rebels Ahsoka
@@ezelop19 but they said not as powerful as yoda………. which is correct.
What about Yoda v Emperor Palpatine?
This fight was very personal to Yoda because before this Dooku was almost like a son to him
Yoda trained ALL OF THEM EVEN THE SITHS
Before they perverted they power 2 the darkside
I remember the audience cheering when Yoda's shadow appeared. It was epic.
My only complaint about this scene is that I wish it could have gone much longer 😂 it was the first time the movies showed Yoda fighting, and I felt it just scratched the surface to what he is truly capable of. I wanted to see more 😅 But man, when he draws his lightsaber, I get goosebumps
This is the first time I heard Yoda does the battlecry while dueling. Coolest, badass thing Master Yoda has ever done in all of lightsaber duels I say!
The way Yoda dealt with the force lightning was so cool.
I could watch Padme running all day!
When I saw this in the theater and Master Yoda drew his lightsaber, it was simply amazing! I love Yoda!
Yes Yoda... Use your anger... Access the dark side...
0:26 Damn, Dooku really said "What are those"
I'm so jealous of you guys I wish I remembered seeing this in theaters but I was like 4-5
I watched this in the cinema twice, and couldn't understand why most of the audience were laughing. I barely breathed through the whole fight scene.
Still get goosebumps watching it now, 20 years later.
The fact that Dooku was not able to be easily defeated by Yoda speaks greatly of both of there powers
George Lucas confirmed that Dooku was terrified of Yoda
@@Ilovekimi there’s really no jedi or sith in this era who was Yoda’s direct equal. Yes, there were definitely people in the same league as him (sidious, mace), but he was the most powerful.
Only Legends Luke ever surpasses Yoda.
@@Jedilord882 sidious was stronger than yoda
@@TheSkyrimps3 Maybe, but one has to consider cz he's a dark side user, had yoda unleashed his dark side, something far more sinister may have happened.
@@TheSkyrimps3 no he wasnt lmaoooo
1:38 i like how if you play it in slow motion, you can see Dooku as CGI
Bro, Yoda's cracked out of his mind
1:40 Oh hey, it's Yoda's death sound
Dooku follows the tradition of duelling well. When using Makashi as your form, you do the "salute" holding the lightsaber vertically in front of your face, before doing a flourish and then pointing it downwards.
Before prequels came out, me and a friend always joked about how scary it would be if Yoda could jump while screaming, that if he did that suddenly Luke would get a heart attack. It was hilarious watching Attack of the Clones and this coming to realization after so many years.
This was a very big deal for 10 year old me back in 2002. We finally got to see Master Yoda wield a lightsabre.
The Yoda is the Real hero and Jedi We have much to learning of Yoda❤️💯🙏🏻✨🎉
1:34 to me is the pinnacle of Star Wars.
To watch that scene for the first time has to be the most exciting moment for any fan.
Before this, Yoda had never wielded a lightsaber in the movies and the few seconds of anticipation from the time you realize he’s about to use his in a fight until he starts jumping all around the place are incredible.
The fight with Sidious didn’t live up to my expectations though. I didn’t like how much Yoda struggled and ended up defeated so “easily”
Well what were you expecting? Him to win?
Surprised? 😎
It was a draw tbh
Sidious had the high ground!! Lol
