    I use both, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and the SEL35F18 at my A6000 and I can confirm what many others here are saying: The Sigma is much sharper at wide open aperture. Unfortunately this test doesn't show that. Even at f/1.4 the Sigma is brilliant in the center, while the Sony is much softer at f/1.8. You have to stop down the Sony to f/2.8 to have the same sharpness. So if you want to have high extraction with high sharpness for brilliant portraits, the Sigma will give you better results.
    The only big advantage of the Sony is the size. But to be honest, if I had to use f/2.8 instead of f/1.4 for the same sharpness, I would go for the Sigma and accept the 3cm longer lens.
    There is a well known F2.0-autofocus-bug of the Sigma lens. AF-S is not working properly between f/1.7 and f/2.0 when using PAL (f/1.4 is fine). When using NTFC the problem is between f/1.4 and f/1.7. That's why many US users don't recognize that there is a problem but just think that the lens is not so sharp at open aperture. But it's a bug which Sigma knows well (they don't have a solution yet). Solution: The problem is completely gone if you use AF-C. Then the lens is also very sharp at open aperture. If you want to use focus and recompose, there are some tricks you can do to make it work with AF-C (back button focus or using one button as AF/ manual focus switch).

    I had both of these in my hand just yesterday (thanks to Hunts in Cambridge MA for getting them for me to look at) and the size difference made it a no-brainer. To me, the whole idea of the 6000 is the size. The Sony lens keeps the package small. The Sigma lens is more than twice as large. Just not what I wanted.

    I have been having focus problems with the 30mm f/1.4 Sigma on my A6500. Yesterday, I used that combination at ISO 320 giving me 1/250 second at f/5.6 to shoot a group of five people standing in a row outside. I used single shot, AFS, wide area with face detect turned on. The camera showed focus squares around several of the peoples faces but the focus would go in and out. It ended up with the row of subjects just ever so soft with the background more in focus. What do you think went wrong...

    It would be great if you could do a follow up now that 1) you have an A6500 with IBIS and 2) the Sigma has had a firmware update that is supposed to minimise manual focus/AF issues. I'm tossing up which one to buy to use for mostly photos (portrait and street photography), but some video as well. With an A6500, the lack of OSS in the Sigma might not be an issue at all and it appears to be a better lens apart from that.

    First, I wanted to say that I love your videos and been following your channel for a while.

    When I shoot moving objects (people walking, cars etc) I have some blur in the footage, or in other words- the movement is not smooth.

    Since the testing description was silent on this issue, please be sure to confirm that you were either testing autofocus accuracy while on a tripod on a fixed object or that you were using AF-C. Why? There is a measurable difference in depth of field between F1.4 and F1.8, especially when the subject is closer to the lens. Any minor swaying will cause the image to come out as soft or not as sharp. This is especially true when shooting portraits at F1.4. You need to nail focus on the eye (notice that I said singular) and you just won't be able to do so with any consistency if shooting in AF-S. A lot of the complaints about focusing accuracy stem from this lack of understanding of wide aperture lenses. Most people can get away to some degree with sloppy technique with wider angle F1.8 lenses, that just won't get you through the day at F1.4.

    Hello, I stumbled into your video after doing some A6300 research. Finally purchased one including this Sigma lens. However, you did not mention it here, but what are your thoughts o the issue w the Sigma manual focus ring? Hard to create a out of focus to focused effect when manually changing it in video. The manual process requires you to quickly rotate the ring to get any effect, otherwise, doing it slowly does nothing to achieve any noricible focus change.

    How is the focusing on the sigma compared to the sony? I plan to do continuous auto focus for video...

    Interesting. I have the a6000 and the Sigma lens and I love it. I only do photography and I am blown away with the sharpness of the lens and it has quickly become my go to for walkabout photography.

      Hey Paul, since you have one, i wanna ask is it true that the barrel distortion is not applied in camera as explained by this video? Or is it able to correct the distortion by activating the correction from the lens menu as suggested by Sigma? Thanks.

    • @McQueenPaul
      @McQueenPaul Pƙed 7 lety +1

      I don't find much in the way of barrel distortion but I initially process in Lightroom which removes any distortion anyway. It's a great lens and I will be getting the 19mm and 60mm to go with it.

      get it! I purchased the 19mm f2.8 EX DN (old model) and the newer 60mm f2.8 Art version and LOVE them !!! best lenses IMO

      Paul McQueen thanks but what i was asking is, does the JPEG auto correct the distortion or not?

    How does the lens affect the final appearance of the image (color wise). You keep saying that Sigma lens looks warmer than the Sony lens. Is it a software thing with the lens? Because I have noticed that whenever I try to see my camera's software version it pulls up the lens version too. Can you please explain?

    Can the 35mm 1.8 DT SAM also be used on an A6000? The price is way cheaper than the SEL one... Unless paying double is really worth getting the SEL

    How can you compare how sharp an image is or how much grain the image has if you don't shoot at the same ISO. Change your shutter speed to achieve the same exposure but leave the ISO and f-stop the same.

    Wanting to capture my daughters cheerleading team during evening games. Using the a6000 I think the Sigma with it's faster aperture and 30mm framing might be better than the 35mm 1.8 for capturing them while moving? Taking the auto-focus into equation and the movement of the kids which would you recommend? Thanks. Love the channel. God bless your growing family!

    Watching in 2020. Thanks this helped me to decide on Sony 35mm f1.8 for my A6400. Returning my Sigma 30mm 1.4 healf heartedly because I picked it up for $230. Sadly I notice the lack of OSS even on my gimbal (webill lab).

    Great comparison, thank you! What are your thoughts on the 35mm 1.8 OSS vs. the FE35mm 2.8 Zeiss, as used on an a6x00?

    • @ArthurR
      @ArthurR  Pƙed 6 lety +2

      Never tried the Zeiss, but looking back at my experience with the zeiss 16-70, I dont really have a desire to try it another zeiss. 1.8 v 2.8 is a big difference, and OSS is important for me for video. Maybe I will try the Zeiss 24, but probably not the 35.

    I'm looking at this vid a bit later, owning an a5100 and need a prime for less light, street photography and not having to start with zooming the moment I start the camera. I never use manual focus or do much else than auto mode honestly. Size is not a dealbreaker but important to me. Sony or Sigma? (perfect for me would be good qual lens at ca 35mm equivalent but seems impossible in a reasonable budget)

    I am using Sony A6400 (no IBIS) but I have a weebill S gimbal, should i get the sony or the sigma lens? I mostly shoot travel videos and little bit of photography. The Sigma is a little bit more expensive by 30$ here in Singapore.
