    IMO the 35 F/1.8 OSS is the best all-around APS-C lens, especially for video shooters. Small, light, OSS, sharp, bokeh, fast aperture - equivalent to a a 52.5mm full frame and is a great companion to the 16-50 kit lens. Both those lens on a 5100, 6XXX can cover most your needs in a tiny package.

    Hi! Found this interesting when I stood weighing between the both lenses.
    I went for the sigma with its better sharpness and higher f-stop value, and also more affordable. A con was the size before buying, but upon recieving the lens, this is not a problem for me. I actually kind of like how it allows for a comfortable grip/stance and the weight feels very balanced with the camera. I also like the build quality as well.
    Also I almost never shoot film, making the OSS and AF-noise arguments less critical for me.
    First few days in and I'm so happy with my choice, such beautiful shots and great potential for further improving my library!
    Thanks for great content in an easy format!

    Very good comparison from a practical point of view. Both lenses are great. I own and have been using the Sigma for the last two years and it never disappointed me. I never felt the need for IS. Have gone down to 1/8 sec handheld and got sharp images. Call it hefty, bigger, or whatever but it is majestic to hold it mounted on my a6000. And just to add; the heft probably makes it reasonably stable at slower shutter speeds.

      Both would be great for car photos, but it also depends on how close you want to be. The Sigma 16mm f1.4 is also a very good lens for car photos as it's a lot wider, and you can take closer images with a wider look. I'd say either the Sony 35mm f1.8 or the Sigma 16mm f1.4. • @kyletaggart
      @kyletaggart  Před 4 lety +1

      The sigma 35 art is a full frame lens, much heavier, and pricer and not necessarily designed for the a6k line. It would definitely work, but I’d stick with the APS-C version, the contemporary model. One of these days I’m gonna have to throw on a full frame lens and do a video on it. I just picked up an a6100 and will be getting a Sigma 16mm 1.4 in the mail today. I think I also need that 56mm in my life, just look at that big beatiful piece of glass! When you’re shooting with aps-c I think it makes sense to pick the lenses that lets in the most light, to get as close as possible to FF performance (low-light, bokeh, lower shutter speeds). The fact that the Sigma arguably has better colour reproduction, is sharper AND cheaper makes it ideal for stills, and video if your using a gimbal or tripod.

  • @WilliamWallaceRoss

    The Sigma appears to be a bit sharper and would be a great walk-around lens. Since I already have the Sigma 16mm, it would make sense to get the 30mm and I shoot mainly landscape, cityscape. The price, for this amateur is also a factor to consider. Size, I agree for the Sigma might be a factor to consider, however, the 16mm is not light, so, I am already use to that.

I own the Sigma 16 and it is terrific but I do wish it had OSS. I also chose the Sony 18-105 Zoom over the Sigma 18-50 because of the OSS and the powered zoom, even though the Sigma was reviewed as being a sharper lens. Really handy review, expecially 3 years on and in the EU we have both lenses at the same price. I still think the Sigma might win out though, plus the slight extra wideness in 30 vs. 35 might be better in relatively tight/cramped indoor shooting conditions (also where low light might be a better bet). Still undecided, lens window shopping is fun!

    • @kyletaggart
      @kyletaggart  Před 4 lety

      Could be focus breathing. Try manual focus for a shot or two and see if you see the same results. Sometimes using auto focus - depending on what’s in the shot - the lens can focus in and out and have trouble focusing. If it’s not that then maybe it is OSS. If you have the kit lens, it has OSS. Try to shoot the same shot with the kit lens and compare results.

    I wanted the Sigma but the Sony was much cheaper pre-owned here in the UK in 2022 - so I put the savings towards a Sigma 16mm/1.4 - for which Sony doesn't have an equivalent 1st party lens.
    Sigma's E mount lens are much chunkier and have a VERY loud autofocus system which IMHO is much slower than the Sony. But like you say, the picture quality is amazing.

    Interesting video, I am looking at these 2 lenses. but I already own a 56mm Sigma 1.4 lens. If I would shoot for the same video with multiple lenses does it make more sense to stay in the sigma range? or isn't it really noticable after color correction from which lens the shots where made? (Beginner here)

    • @dangerousmethod_33
      @dangerousmethod_33 Před 18 dny

      Yes, the colors look different the Sony is more close to cold colors and the sigma it is slightly warmer. You could shoot in log and then put all the same color in post or you could stay in the Sigma ecosystem. So is your call, if you dont like to color correct your footage after filming go for the Sigma, in my opinion the Sony is a better deal. Why?, because sometimes you see your photos and videos slightly out of focus with the Sigma. The AF of the Sony is Right 90% of the time, the Sigma I'll say its about 70%. Also de AF in the Sony is faster. Anyway both of this lenses are great and you could not go wrong with either.

      @NickL0VIN Před 4 lety

      hikyletaggart glad you like the Sony. After I bought the a6600 I bought the Sigma 30mm because now I have IBIS. With the heavier a6600 and the “big” Sigma lens I felt like I’m almost holding a full frame camera (although full frame users would laugh at that statement).
      I returned it and am staying with my Sony 35mm. Thanks for helping me with buyers remorse (or lack thereof!).
      A big reason APSC users use this camera cause of it’s size. If we wanted 100% optical, image quality we would’ve went full frame to begin with! IMO, small form factor with 96% IQ is better than bigger form factor with 100% IQ.

    • @kyletaggart
      @kyletaggart  Před rokem +1

      Yes and no, some people prefer to zoom with a zoom lens, rather than moving their feet! 30mm is a fixed focal length, so that’s up to you. It is a versatile focal length though, and f1.4 gives you low light flexibility for sure. I think it’s a great starter lens as maybe your first prime lens (if it is). It’s a great lens for the money no doubt. The Viltrox 33mm is also f1.4, and I think sometimes cheaper. Both are great options for their cost.

    • @kyletaggart
      @kyletaggart  Před 4 lety +4

      Each lens has a time and place, I myself would use the 35mm f1.8 more. Facial features are reflected different in each lens depending on focal length. Lens distortion can easily be corrected, but it’s still a factor. Each lens can provide a different look. Like the 16mm can be used from like a underneath perspective and elongate the subject in a standing pose, something the 35mm wouldn’t do as well. And the 35mm would provide a “better” shot head on like a standard portrait, with more background separation bc of the longer focal length.

      I owned both, twice (long story short returned the Sigma both times and kept the Sony, see my other comment on here for details). There is slight barrel distortion on the Sigma, wether it's because it's a wider FOV or just the elements i'm not sure. If shooting straight lines you will definitely see a difference. Easily corrected in Lightroom though.
