    Back on our Budget Build Geo Tracker / Suzuki Sidekick project and today we installed a Powertrax Lock Right Locker (1512-LR) in the rear. Soon we will also be installing this same locker in the front. Installation is relatively the same as the 1532-LR locker except this kit re uses the side spider gears as part of the locker, saving you about $100!

    This was a very knowlegable demo and proof you were familiar with all the componenant. Problem is --- we aren't now cause fixed camera position never showed any detail on anything and especially the insides. Obviously you are familiar with what it looks like inside. We aren't. Wife has a Tracker and we live waaay off grid up trails in the mountains in snow. I will look into this locker . I'm a gear head and was sorta able to follow. Thanks Dandahermit

    Great video! Got my diff on the bench done installing the locker, on a 96 tracker my axles have the wheel studs atrached no 4 screws. you did not mention or see you remove the washers on the sides of the reused gears, do you recall if you used the thin or thick one or both? I cannot fit both it will not let the pins line up to the block. Installed only the think concave one, the manual mentioned the thin one mentioning the "shiny side".
    Pins fit perfectly after removing the thicker washer.
    Thanks again for the help. Im afraid of installing and doing it twice 😅

    • @DeathTollRacing
      @DeathTollRacing  Před 7 měsíci +1

      If I’m understanding your description correctly, the concave one goes on the outside of the spider gear (the factory washer) and the thin one goes on the inside in between the spider and the lock rite. (The washer that came with the locker ).
      Hope that helps.

    Awesome video! Thanks so much for sharing your Lock Right Locker install! I am debating whether or not to put one in mine. Does it seem to work well? I do about 50/50 street/off road traveling. How does it do when you try to make sharp turns in parking lot and off road??

    • @DeathTollRacing
      @DeathTollRacing  Před 2 lety

      I will be doing a review on it soon, but here’s the summary.
      In a 2 door tracker it has some characteristics on the street that feel odd. Sometimes it’s a bit of a pull sensation from a stop, sometimes what feels like bad spider gears.
      Parking lot stuff is great. Yes it clicks while turning, but it’s not clunks, it’s clicks. You still have the weird feelings above, but you’ll get used to those.
      A longer wheelbase would make the weird feelings less noticeable, as would also an automatic.
      Off road, it’s great!

    I installed this locker on my 96 tracker a year ago. ( Mechanic licensed) I had to remove some of the side gear shims/washers in order to get the pins for the block to go in. Instructions never mentioned that. I see yours went together much easier. Also mine does not unlock when turning and skidding tires. I wish I had manually tested that unit before I got it back into the vehicle. Now I will have to dig into it again to see what's going on...

    • @DeathTollRacing
      @DeathTollRacing  Před rokem +1

      That is odd. The only thing you could have done is make a mistake with the pins and springs. If not that then I wonder if at some point the diff may have been swapped out with an aftermarket one that may be slightly different??

      @@DeathTollRacing I ended up having to shave the pin block down on the lathe, there wasn't enough room for the locker teeth to jump over, reassembled and bench tested, now it works great.

  • @mistergreen2
    @mistergreen2 Před rokem +2

    After 1/2 day of brain grinding I finally figured out that the .030 inch side gear thrust washers needed to go back in. Took them out because the pin would not go through the center block. So I had to machine .035 inch off both sides of that center block, now everything fits and works like it should. What was happening is the lock rite 1/4 inch pins were climbing out of their slot, jamming the two plates tight against the side gears making it impossible for the unit to ratchet.

    So I have a truck with a short wheel base.
    Your wheel base is shorter than mine.
    I was told that lunch box locker tend to NOT open the diff on turns because of the short wheel base.
    Have you had any issues with turning corners under power ?

    • @DeathTollRacing
      @DeathTollRacing  Před 2 lety +1

      So what it does when you give it throttle in a corner is try to push straight, and you can definitely feel it. It's different feeling for sure, but now than I'm used to it, it's definitely not something that creates issues driving it, just some characteristic's that are different. Assuming your in a Landcruiser by seeing your name, I think you would be okay with it, however you will notice it for sure. And they do click in parking lot turns, so if you want it quiet, that's also a concern.

    So I got the rear diff carrier out again and found all pins broken and springs mashed up on the 1512 Lock Rite. Installed new pins and springs and the thing still won't unlock while doing a bench test with the axles. I can easily push the center lock rite half with a small screwdriver and that allows the side gear to rotate but it won't do it on it's own. How is your unit holding out and operating?

    I bought 2 of these and installed them both into the rears of 2 of my Geo Trackers. On my daily driver, I had no issues. I did the test, it functioned fine. I have been driving it for months, about 100 miles a week. As I turn, i can hear a slight click as the outside wheel overruns the inside. So I know how to do it.
    The one in my rock crawler keeps giving me trouble. Just before I left for Moab, I realized the rear was locked solid. I opened it up and found that I had put the pins in the slot and the springs in the hole. I don't know why I did it that way. I know better. So I put it back together the right way, after straightening the springs a little and threw it back into place. Did the test, pressure forward on one wheel and the other ratcheted the other direction. Seemed fine. Halfway through the Moab trip it started clicking louder and louder, getting harder to unlock. Eventually it locked solid and would no longer unlock. As I turned, the tires would chirp and scratch. When I got home and owned it up, I found the pins and springs all broken. I got new parts, cleaned everything up, reassembled but it won't unlock.

    • @DeathTollRacing
      @DeathTollRacing  Před 2 lety

      That's interesting. I'm guessing that it has to have something to do with the pins and springs or the holes they go in.
      it could also be the couplers. I can't find if you can buy the side couplers by themselves, but there may be something wrong with the factory spider gear couplers. amzn.to/3OOfYuI has the couplers with it. You may want to try seeing if you can buy just the couplers from powertrax??

      This is my first time without the side couplers. I believe there are a few sacrifices without.
      1- smoothness. I think it’s a bit smoother with the couplers.
      2- longevity. I believe longevity will become an issue at some point. The material of the locker is far superior to that of the side spider gear, and I suspect eventually the spider gear is going to wear out.

    6.9 differential? Pinion gear : ring gear teeth? Where you find it? The lowest i know 6:35 means 5.8 fg ratio (calmini) and 8:45 means 5.6 fg ratio ('83, 2 door 1.3L carb). Nowhere to find both combo.

      6.9 is the ring gear size (in inches). It’s how the gear companies label this gear set, not the ratio.
