    From my perspective,the best thing China has done in the past 2 years is that the country has successfully helped ordinary people to form a habit of protecting themselves effectively in the epidemic.Although China has completely opened up,people still wear masks on the street and it really helps them to prevent themselves from getting infected.People definitely fear the disease,but they have positive attitude,effective medicine and good ways to protect themselves in daily life.I think they can soon go through hard time.

    it recently just dawned on me that, even if after COVID disappears, proper facemasks will become a standard equipment for me in public places, especially when it's crowded. Everytime I catch a flu, it's guaranteed that I can write off a few days of my life, let alone that nasty cough lingering for weeks. The cost/benefit analysis makes sense, for me. Also I see it as a civic responsibility to stop the spreading and evolving of diseases.

      I wear masks too but it may be in vain. People in Shanghai have been wearing masks but it's estimated still around 50% of the city got infected within 4/5 weeks (including myself). I've seen medical people argue that research says masks are useless against Covid and there doesn't seem to be any evidence at the moment to say they do any good (at least surgical masks seem to be not much good) as it's an airborne virus with virus particles that are way way smaller than the holes in surgical masks. I'm still wearing one but I recognize that there's a good chance it's pointless. They also have negative effects like hindering young children's language development as young children use facial expressions to pick up language which can't be seen when wearing a mask. Like I said, I still wear one but I definitely think they shouldn't be used in schools at least for younger children

    • @bcskqc
      @bcskqc Před rokem +2

      @@solas1183 you brought up another crucial point, a few factors come to mind:
      (1) the type and quality of masks, how people wear them, the duration one is in high risk areas. And the contagious level of the variants.
      (2) it's a matter of reduction and *not* 100% elimination even for a perfectly sealed mask against the face (as oppose to being in a space suit)
      (3) a mask can serve to protect the wearer if it's the type with an electrostatic layer such as a medical mask (if the virus is in the air) and can at least serve to protect the others (if the wearer has covid).
      (4) People contracting it when they don't expect to such as when they are within their own homes when they are not wearing their masks. Contaminated air can come in from hallways, stair cases, and possibly other ventilations if shared with other apartments.
      (5) life is full of decisions about making trade offs and in this case involving also probablities.
      On (1), the protection of say a medical mask is based on that one layer of electrostatic filter, and not so much how tight the 'holes' in the fibre are. Even for the N95 masks, the best type you can find, the ones I'm wearing now, as the name implies, only filters 95% of the pathogens. So that means if I stay in a crowded place for a *long time* and with the virus in the air, with a highly contagious virus with a high R value, it's almost a certainty that I'll get it. On top of that a huge problem as the eyes can literally see is that often people are very casual handling their masks. There are tons of gaps between the edges of the mask and wearer's face such as that area around the nose bridge. (I make sure I fit the contour as best I can and then tape in a couple of areas to improve the seal and prevent the mask from sliding around) They take their masks off and put them on repeatly without proper hand hygenie and handling of the masks and touching their face in the process etc. Cross contamination. And if the mask is of low quality or fake (which there can be a lot of these out there), the result is obvious.
      On (3), if the goal is only to protect others, say if I know I have covid, then wearing any masks even the cloth ones should help, as it reduces the amount of droplets to come out or aerosol to form.
      As far as pros vs cons, it's hard to quantify precisely, as you mentioned it hinders development on one hand vs help protecting the children and preventing the spread of covid. It involves how one weighs things (how serious the consequences can be), and what probabilities they assign to these events. Technologies such as remote learning through zoom etc can help address this dilemma though.
      After 3 years, i'm surprised to see there are still debates on masks. There are definitely technical studies of what a good mask can do as far as protecting the wearer goes. I guess the catch here is - it also depends on a lot of other things as far as not contracting the COVID goes.
      Given China's crowded urban environments with that population and density and family structure (grand parents mangle with their grand kids), plus the aforementioned factors in (1), *I'm not at all surprised that the 'masks wearing' (as a loosely defined term in this context) has not been that effective* against the current variants, with an R value close to 20?! BUT, it does not mean it's useless, an easy leap of logic. Which can also be improved further by addressing those factors mentioned in (1)
      By the way, a by product of observing this infection explosion in hind sight kind of justifies the very strict policies by the government up to recently. i.e., Imagine what it'd be like had they opened up earlier when the virus was even just a tad deadlier.

    Great video, easy to understand for all interested. Re Cambridge, they did try this drug on human tissue and it does work. And as you said, the next is human trials. The point of this drug is COVID spike protein enters a cell via the ACE2 receptor and if that receptor is closed, the COVID virus cannot enter the cell regardless of the type of COVID you've been infected with. This 'off patent' drug is used to treat liver disease and has already been approved for general use and is available and inexpensive. The idea here, is to get approval to 'repurpose' for use with COVID.
    "The research, published today in Nature, showed that an existing drug used to treat a type of liver disease is able to ‘lock’ the doorway by which SARS-CoV-2 enters our cells, a receptor on the cell surface known as ACE2. Because this drug targets the host cells and not the virus, it should protect against future new variants of the virus as well as other coronaviruses that might emerge.
    If confirmed in larger clinical trials, this could provide a vital drug for protecting those individuals for whom vaccines are ineffective or inaccessible as well as individuals at increased risk of infection." (St Cathrine College, Cambridge)
    www.caths.cam.ac.uk/prevent-COVID
    Watch the video in the middle of the article.
    Big pharma won't like this because it is off patent (generic) and doesn't require changing treatments because of a mutating COVID. If proven effective, one would think the booster shots now given for different COVID variants could end.
    Further, more studies are showing that vaccines efficacies are under question, ie how relative vs actual efficacies are defined and measured. Probably more to come in the future, but for us lay people, it looks like we have been hoodwinked to believe vaccines are super effective against adverse effects when realty may be far from the impression the public gets from the word 'efficacy.'
    There are also media reports that talk about a 'universal' flu (influenza) vaccine. One wonders if it follows a similar treatment path???

      Wouldn't blocking the ACE2 receptor over the long term lead to hypertension and a jump in deaths due to strokes? If everybody could take this for two weeks, I could see the virus being exterminated. Imagine we maintain the surveilance and everybody in an outbreak region cooperates.
      But our experience with the antivaxers convince me that the antivaxers would not help. To avoid getting covid, we'd need to take this for months and years.

      @@danielch6662 Here's what the NIH and Mayo Clinic says about this drug:
      "n multiple clinical trials in a variety of conditions, ursodiol has not been found to cause increases in serum enzyme elevations, worsening of underlying liver disease or clinically apparent liver injury. Nevertheless, there have been rare reports of clinical decompensation in patients with advanced liver disease and cirrhosis started on ursodiol, but the reason for such reactions is not known. In at least one instance, there was recurrence of jaundice on restarting ursodiol. Thus, ursodiol has beneficial effects on several forms of liver disease and has not been convincingly linked to cases of clinically apparent acute liver injury in patients without cirrhosis. There is some concern that ursodiol may be harmful in patients with advanced liver disease (Childs class B and C) and such patients probably should not receive ursodiol." (ncbi)

So the major medicines taken are Ibuprofen and Azvudine (not paracetamol). Paxlovid is popular, however it is not covered by people's insurances here. And also the demand exceeds supply, so it seems sold out everywhere, people struggle to buy it as some people buy lots.

    Very disappointing you haven't mentioned the fact that Chinese covid vaccines are not mRNA which is having such dire consequences in adverse reactions. Disappointing you haven't mentioned the fact that the current strain of covid is far less lethal than the original strain.
    For those wishing to understand the scientific facts and differences between mRNA and the traditional approach to vaccines I would highly recommend Dr John Campbell discussion with Australian virologist a week or so ago.on CZcams
    However I think you are doing extremely good work on highlighting the facts about religious freedom in China

    • @livinlavidaluke
      @livinlavidaluke  Před rokem +2

      Well, I mentioned that it is a weaker strain, but still the main point of the video was to discuss the dangers of long covid.
      In terms of the vaccine, I always think it's best not to scaremonger talking about negatives, which causes all these anti-vaxxers to further spread their own agendas. Of course, as you said, mRNA is more effective, however cardiovascular effects are more common and severe, so it goes both ways.
      All the best, thanks for your comment.

    • @alecward1626
      @alecward1626 Před rokem

      @@livinlavidaluke I didn't say ,'mRNA is more effective' for the simple reason I don't know whether it is.or not, and I haven't got an agenda other than to listen to Professors on this subject and adverse reactions to mRNA are a known fact and likely to get worse. I am 78, had real influenza when I was 40, never took the winter vaccine and haven't taken any covid ones either. As many others are also recommending I exercise by walking every day, only eat real food, not take away crap or ultra processed foods. imo obesity is the real pandemic, and data shows it's a common phenomena of morbidities, which are common factor in deaths from covid. Pharma has a long history of lying and fraudulent claims. Their profits come from unhealthy people.

    As of Jan 10, the WHO reports 10,649,521 infections in China with 33,144 deaths. Lets compare to Australia with 11,047,174 infections and 15,937 deaths. So China has had less infections than Australia but has double the deaths. Why the disparity? Is this an indication of the efficacy (or lack thereof) of Chinese vaccines or is this an indicator of the sub-standard medical care in China? Or is it something else?

    • @livinlavidaluke
      @livinlavidaluke  Před rokem +3

      Well i think covid cases are impossible to know exactly in China since nobody reports testing anymore. It could be argued its more cases than that figure, but its difficult to say. And yeah MRNA vaccines are more effective, so i got my Pfizer shot as soon as i arrived here

    • @Jane-ch9yb
      @Jane-ch9yb Před rokem +10

      I really doubt any of the figures you use. How did you get the figure? Nobody knows it by this time. Besides, how can you compare such figures with completely different variants and different populations with different conditions? If you are a country with a lot of elderly, you will face a different situation than a country with a very young population? The same can be said for very rich countries with excellent medical facilities and those poorer countries with fewer medical facilities. So teh best is to read such analysis from a research paper, not from media or social media.
