@Alex The Minibuses Vans Lover. x ?
The Renault ended up just around the corner from where my nan lives! Good to know that if I wanted to go visit her from London the Renault would get me there in one go.
Pretty risky, though. You might want to make a 30 min charge somewhere along the way (with 50kW DC fast charge option 30min gives you an extra 100 miles, or 48 miles with standard 22kW)
@@corentinoger Not true. When unsure if you make it, you will be better off just going 5 mph slower. The Zoe does not achieve the advertised 50kW DC charging speed. It will do an average of about 35 kW between 10 and 90%. So a lot quicker than AC22, but not twice as fast.
I'd love to see this test re-run during one of our January (or February) days when the heater, lights, windscreen wipers are all going complimented only by the coldness of the temperatures outside. How would they fair and which one would come out supreme then I wonder?
they will not test these cars for winter conditions...........there is a reason for that!!
Separate batteries for those apart from heater I guess
@@billw8476 They do test electrics for winter conditions. I’ve seen several such tests on CZcams.
@Jo Bell - "AAA" recently conducted a test and found, when an EV's heater system is in use, average EV range drops by 41% under combined mixed city/highway driving conditions. So (ie/eg) an EV that's rated to run 100 miles between charges, will now only run 59 miles between charges. Seeing how EV manufacturers/EV dealerships aren't likely going to discuss cold-weather range performance with those that purchase EVs, I can see a lot of unsuspecting EV owners becoming extremely upset if they happen to live in an area (or need to drive to an area) that experiences cold temperatures 1-6+ months out of the year.
Good point, well made. Another point I have heard someone make is what if you are on a journey in cold weather and you get stranded somewhere with a flat battery. You will not be able to "run the engine" to keep the heat going. I get that typically someone with an electric vehicle should be planning their journeys so well that that should never happen but you know what people are like. Many folk have gotten lost in snow storms before.

I’ve got an electric van, I have found that the air temperature has a large effect on the distance. The colder it gets the less distance.
That's a known fact and they should test these in winter
Same with my petrol 1.0 tsi
Had a Honda since january 2022.
In the colder months (Jan - Mar) range was easily sub-100 and nearer 80 but as a city car (and that's what it's marketed as) that's not an issue.
With warmer weather and holidays, we've done several 100-110 trips on A-roads with some dual carriageway/motorway driving and hilly/scenic B-roads and got as low as 9% battery on those trips before hitting a charger - a bit nervy but more confident now we've done it a few times.
We stopped in very rural Perthshire and had a chat with someone who worked for a Honda dealer and he was impressed how far we'd come.
Planning is key - have a spread of charging points planned and avoid hills.
Do we like it? Hell, yes.

Heated windscreen would be a killer I bet
@@electroid8119 the AC is the general battery killer. Seat heating and all else barely has an impact. In my experience tho, you get about 20% less range during winter with EVs
Zoe: At -12C, Heating set to 24C (lights, heated seats and steering wheel are powered from the 12v battery, not the 400v traction battery) the real world range is 290km at 120km/h.

Definetly wasn't filmed recently then
I am a bit confused. 31c which is what the car Matt was driving said....that's not even 90degrees F. That's not hot at all and those cars didn't get great mileage. What about driving in an actual hot day? Like 105-108f or 42c...that's warm and a good test.
@@coreyverisario6570 In the UK anything above 70° F is a hot day.
Wow sensitive people over the pond. Yea 90 degrees for us a very nice summer day. Truthfully hitting 110 sucks. That's when it's dangerous to be outside and we wish to be somewhere else.
@@coreyverisario6570 30 degrees is way way too hot
@Ddhfacetyy agreed but cracking the window is a big help in that situation. I am not saying it's cold. Lol. It's just not as hot as they were making it sound. But since the UK apparently doesn't get that hot, then I can see why they think it's really warm. I would be happy to have the lower temps all the time. Or be more steady around 80-85.
I'd be interested to see this tried again in winter with heater and demister on etc. See what the difference is.
AN OVERNIGHT TEST, in the rain, with all the Lights, windscreen wipers on too!
Interesting question, but also tell me what temperature.
(Or go to the video's of Tesla Bjorn ...he's done a lot of tests in different wether, speed and so on).
I can only give an estimate on a Hyunda KonaE 64....At zero to three degrees celsius I'll reach 390-400km range.
At 20-22 degrees celsius I'll reach 450-460 km range (which is more than the 449 km wltp claimed range). This numbers are measurde with mostly motorway at a speed of 100km/h (which is the speed limit in the Netherlands at the moment) and a little in town. Maximum range , when you're really trying to get as far as possible, 85km/h is more than 500km in conditions when you do not need heater or airco.
I'm driving at least every week a roundtrip of about 360 km. Never needed to go to a (fast)charger on this distance. Starting this after buying this car nearly 2 years ago.
@@reiniernn9071 see that's the thing, I suppose you'd have to do it at multiple temperatures and see which vehicle is affected the most by it, and how much so.

Thanks for doing this. Must have been so boring to test but it's what everyone wants to know. Personally, I want a larger electric car. Whilst researching what's available I was shocked to read the range smallprint on some of them. For example, 200 mile range, but at 70mph is reduced by half!! 200 mile range is great, but the only time you'll ever want to use that is a motorway drive. 100 mile range is just not good enough for motorway driving.
For me, range anxiety is not an issue. What would be a concern would be turning up at a charging point & finding it not working.
I stopped at a motorway service area in southern England recently & noticed that out of 12 charging points provided, five were not working & when I returned two days later the same five were still out of order. This is an issue that the industry is going to have to tackle if EVs are going to become mainstream.
Everytime a car runs out of battery and leaves the motorway it reminds me of the Fast and Furious 7 ending...

There's someone who owns a Honda E around where I live and I see it quite regularly on the road. It's probably the coolest looking EV on the market IMO - in its price-category. But seeing the range results and the asking prices, you'd have to be pretty daft to not get the Zoe. Which, to my eye, is the second best looking of this bunch. What I'd *really* want though is a new, extended range version of Citroen's e-Mehari. Ignoring the question of propulsion, that thing is/was just a cool little car. Had they only sold it with a petrol engine, I still would've wanted one.

Why don’t any of these cars have solar panel charging roofs? It may just get you out of trouble with enough charge to get to a charging point.
With solar cells on the roof you would get like 1-2kWhrs on whole a sunny day. (My estimate based on the 3.5kW system on our house and its size) So it wouldnt be worth it, coz usually ur car isnt in direct sunshine for 8hrs anyway.

As far Al liking electric cars go
Renault was the first of the established auto-makers to heavily invest in electric cars. As such they do have a technological lead... and mind you, German brands such as Mercedes collaborate heavily with Renault for their electric cars since themselves were left kind of behind in this area. If you are thinking of an electric car pass by Renault first.
Not really
Yeah I remember years ago seeing the Zoe and the twinzy I think it called. Looking back now they really did start the push for electric ahead of the rest.
@@robato3991 Twizzy, yes. It was more of a gimmick than really a car but they made it to refer to the people who have no driver license. However the Zoe 1st generation was indeed the first serious electric car by a European manufacturer. I would not buy it though as it had the old batteries and a modest 200km autonomy. The 2nd generation has a true 400km autonomy which had been tested by car testers and proven to exceed it - Renault tends to give the average autonomy summer-winter not the summer, i.e. the extended, one as other companies do. To be noted that Renault was already implicated into electric cars through its collaboration with Nissan for the Nissan Leaf, arguably the first big brand mass produced electric car of the modern times. The thing though with electric cars is that once a company sets its focus on them and invests in the manufacturing of batteries, the rest is easy. It is just an electric motor, nothing special about it.

great video !! . very usefull .. have you tested the Nissan Leaf in the same way ?
Mat:"so basicly we're doing a test and i've come from London to here"
The old woman at the end: "oh god"
czcams.com/video/aPDAmyEtIc8/video.html
"You're lucky I'm doing this cause this is a bloody French car"
We love you too :p
Note that If you used the eco mode from the start with the Zoe, it would probably have gone further.
Yeah, the point of the test was to test real-world range. He mentioned it in the beginning as he had aircon on.
czcams.com/video/FYzr_F8yZmg/video.html
@@ZesPak not really that real world using aircon in the UK at 21 degrees.
Can you do the same test for Skoda Enyaq with other bigger EVs in the same category (price/official range)? It would probably be a bit longer drive for you 😁but interesting to watch for sure...
So if you run out of battery on the motorway due to being sat for hrs because of an accident how does the rac get to you to charge you back up especially if a lot of other vehicles are in the same position, then there’s the charging costs which are going to vary across the country same as fuels do now,but in a petrol/diesel car most can do round trip without refuelling so choosing where to refuel & how much you pay where as the choice will be take away if going to an hotel
That old guy must felt *gutted* when Mat told him the French car won 😂
Flukes happen all the time seems to be the most logical explanation for the French car winning anything. Oh yeah another real winner Michelin tires right even their tires suck, not a lot of traction & you will forever be balancing the tires & they don't wear well
@@jackboyer1280 this didn't age well...
@@Dev-bg9st what happened?
Mat: "I'd pay the extra 5,000£ for the mini"
Under that logic I'd pay the extra 20,000£ for a big V8 motor.
Some people don't want petrol or diesel anymore
@@JariVitunLitmanen that’s not the point hahaha
No that’s not logical because if you are looking for a small electric city car anything with a V8 isn’t on your radar.
And by your logic, for an extra 2 million GBP I can buy a Bugatti. It's about comparing cars in the same class and will you be paying a premium for a slightly better car.
@@Jabber-ig3iw he said VW vs Mini he'd get the Mini but the the price difference is huge, the mini is 25% more expensive.
I also would like to see a night test, with lights on ,heater on and carry 4 adults and luggage to see how the effect on the range
You forgot at 0 degrees too and when its a few years old and batteries down to 70% capacity lol
@@daddymulk don't use common sense! the electric cars hate THAT!
It would be interesting though to perform the battery degradation test before the range test even begun. Anyway, excellent video, loved it. Thanks
At 17:08 there's a blue McLaren :-O You can see the car while Matt's speaking on the radio :-)
I’m not the only one to spot the 570s lol 😂
@@aydendelrio5226 Bruh!!! ;-)
I saw it too, I was like damn these brits are rich. On a journey they ran into an amg gt and a 570s like what?!
I WAS GONAN WRITE THE SAME THING LOL
The future : everybody drives electric cars, everyone uses metric.
I really can't understand UK using both metric and imperial and occasionally using "stone", which I have no idea what system it is from.
@@bru7alism yeah there are few other things about UK i still struggle to figure out.
Without replaceable batteries, electric will not be the future. There will be an alternate tech waiting to take the lead.
@@EdyPegasus you mean you thrown all your remote control just cuz the battery ????
@@EdyPegasus NIO is a solid option for being a swappable battery car....
When more and more electric cars come on line watch you rates go sky high also!!!!!
I like the corsa and e-up best, if you could buy them in a 3 door config they would be perfect.
17:10 a wild McLaren appears!

So basically the French Zoe is the Model 3 of small electric cars ! Interesting
As in, actually designed with great aero for drag reduction?
@@bartbatenburg I would say "as in" I'm impressed that the best small electric car is made by a french manufacturer :)
@@Hadhoudtn Don't underestimate french engineers B)
althought we struggle with our industry in so many ways we still manage to do great things xD
@@lazysloth8448 I agree ! Don't worry I'm very familiar with french products and the french culture ;) I'm actually glad to see that they sometimes manage to be the best at some things (even though I'm not french xD). I would just say : keep up the good work PSA and Renault
I just hate the looks / name Zoe for a car not for me Young driver, I'd like something sporty looking with decent range.. like the Zoe..
So I just got me a mini se 2022 and I can confirm that temperature makes, I hope, a huge difference. With about 7° C I was barely able to drive 180km. After it reached 0 I had no 20 miles, I got about 5 km. And the car died about 1 km away of the charging station. So people consider the huge differences due to temperature or you will end up pushing your car on the highway
