It’s time for another awesome EV range test!
We’ve pulled together six of the latest & greatest all-electric cars to drive them straight North from London to see just how accurate their claimed ranges are. But we won't be stopping when the range hits 0... We'll keep driving them until they come to a complete standstill, to see just what happens!
So what do we have in the line-up? Well, we’ve gone for range-topping editions of all cars, apart from the first car Mat’s in - the Mustang Mach-E. Sadly, we could only get our hands on the entry-level version for this video. However, everything else in the line-up is top-of-the-range! And what a line-up it is...
    Audi Q4 e-tron
    Skoda Enyaq
    BMW iX3
    Hyundai IONIQ 5
    Kia EV6
So which do you think will go the furthest? You’ll have to keep watching to find out!

I think that Hyundai is awesome looking and I reckon that Kia really stands out, but not so much in red. The interior in both the Hyundai and especially the Kia are miles ahead of so many other electric cars. I absolutely hate the vertical tablet type screens, and the Kia having physical controls for climate control is a must

    • @blahorgaslisk7763
      @blahorgaslisk7763 Před 2 lety +8

Personally I think the Hyundai looks like something a kid would have drawn back in the 90's or very early 2000 if asked what cars in the future would look like. The "digital" design he talked about in the video just looks dated to me, and in a few years it will just look even more out of touch with good design.
But then that might just be me showing my age. But I do think that a sign of good design is if something still looks relevant in a decade or two, and designs like the Hyundai tends to age badly.
But the inside is pretty nice looking, though I can only talk about what I saw. Physical controls will always be better than touch screens. It's all about the tactile feedback. You don't have to take your eyes off the road as you can feel the controls. Levers and sliders for things like climate controls are a good design that allows you to feel what the settings are. Again, any design that allows the driver to keep the eyes on the road is to be preferred.
Touch screens are good for navigation and possibly radio and phone use, but the problem is that the interface is changing depending on the module that's up front so you have to take your eyes off the road to see what it currently is showing. The buttons and controls also move depending on the active module and there is no way you can feel for them but you more or less have to watch that screen when manipulating the controls.

I didn't read all the hundreds of comments, so I don't know if someone else already made this calculation:
    - The Kia has a 73kWh battery and claimed an average of 3.7mi/kWh. This should result in 270.1mi, but in fact it where 273mi. Very accurate and reliable!
    - The Ioniq claimed 3.4mi/kWh with it's 73kWh battery which should result in 248.2mi. The real range was 237mi, so nearly 3.3mi/kWh. A small and acceptable difference.
    - The Skoda claimed 3.4mi/kWh with it's 77kWh battery and made 264mi. Should had been 261.6min, so as for the Kia that was understatement, very accurate and reliable as well!
    - The Audi claimed 3.2mi/kWh and the range should have been 262.4mi with it's 82kWh battery. 234mi in reality is only just under 2.9mi/kWh, 0.3mi/kWh less. That's poor!
    - The BMW claimed 3.6mi/kWh with it's 80kWh battery which should result in 288mi. In fact it where only 257mi, so the real number is 3.2mi/kWh, 0.4mi/kWh less. Even more poor.
    - The Mustang claimed 3.7mi/kWh and should have driven for 281.2mi with it's 76kWh battery. In real life it ran out of juice at 228mi which results in only 3.0mi/kWh. A difference of 0.7mi/kWh! That's not poor, that's just Intolerable! But OK, we know that from Fors petrol cars already, the dashs of that cars lie like hell as well...
At the team: Thank you for your great work! But you shouldn't trust in the numbers shown by the manufacturer but always calculate them by yourself.

When you stop a gas car, either the engine continues to idle (using gas) or shuts down (stop/start system) and has to start back up which is really bad for the engine.

Hi Matt, great review! Just to mention that although you kept saying the Mach-E has the smallest battery, it is 76kWh (70kWh usable), which is not much smaller than the 73kWh of the Ioniq 5. Considering that, the Hyundai is more efficient than the Ford. Personally I think the EV6 and Ioniq 5 are the best due to their design, technology, charging, decent practicality, and even overall value, but the Kia has the upper hand due to interior quality and range/efficiency compared to its sister car, the Ioniq 5.

If it takes over an hour to charge, this could result in longer road trips with multiple stops. Kinda like the Next Generation Smart Electric Vehicles (NIO) with a battery swap option. Pull into power station swap out batteries and off you go. Will watch the Tesla video to see how the Tesla compairs.

It just shows the pace of innovation in EVs, to make them both more efficient at using energy but also more affordable batteries.
The BMW iX3 for me really stood out. It's probably the boxiest of the lot and isn't built on a pure EV platform, but managed to go almost as far as the Enyaq and Kia, at an impressive 3.6 mi/kwh.

That does make it fun if you like to go sideways, but for most people a two tonne electric vehicle is too much to handle when it loses grip.
