This is the new Renault Zoe!
Renault’s updated the Zoe to give it some new tech, tweak the design, and more importantly, they’ve fitted a new battery and motor to give it better range!
Of course, we’re not short on choice when it comes to the small EV market, with competition like the Peugeot e208 and MINI Electric already standing out from the crowd. So does the new Zoe have what it takes to go one better and become the must-have small EV of 2020?
Check out Mat’s latest review to find out!

So would you choose the new Zoe over the Peugeot e208 or MINI Electric?!
Helllll noooo 😂😂😂
Laferrari vs mclaren p1 drag race please!!
Laferrari vs mclaren p1 drag race please!!
Mini electric
Non of them thanks, I had a Zoe it was a nightmare.
Drag race: Mat and Yianni e scooter.
😂
🧡💕
Should be easy win for Mat in breaking test
The amount of bots here upsets me.
Bruh I support that all the way
Drove it over the weekend and did over 500km with it
Gotta say that it's a fun little ride and feels quite spacious in the front
Could definitely imagine driving it on a daily basis
Mat just bought an electric scooter and needed to do something with it on video so he can claim it as a business expense 😂
I bought a new Zoe last year and for the most part, except for the satnav shortcomings, I love it. Its range is generous, the ride compliant, seats comfortable and in my opinion the design, remarkably still fresh and modern looking despite being unaltered since introduction, graceful and elegant from every angle - a big selling point for me. No surprise that for a very long time it's been the best selling BEV in France.
(Being a card-carrying technophobe all I now have to do - and I'm serious - is discover how to switch the radio on. Modern cars are so complex. On the move my last vehicle had to be legally accompanied in front by a man at walking pace waving a red flag.)
“It doesn’t look much more modern than before” you okay my Zoe from 2019 looks like it belongs in 2007
even though i dont't like the car i watch it because i love the way mat explains everything
Isn't it time for reversing cameras to come as standard?
Nha i dont need the camera's and it saves me a lot of money on the car. The base price would go up if they include the camera's. I can see why they are not standard.
@@nielskolder6434 The cost of a 720p camera with cables is what? 5€ max? And do I really care if the price will be 5€ more for a car that is already over 24K€?
@@athl0n The cameras are actually not that cheap. They can't just use cheap camera sensors because the camera needs to be able to work properly in the dark, without too much noise
@@AniviaS Let's take the worst case scenario and say the manufacturer is gonna use the flagship smartphone level camera - the Google Pixel 3 camera module is 20€. It has a fantastic night time performance, one of the best in the market, and can record in 4K (imagine 4K reversing camera) - a total overkill. The cost of cables to connect them from the back of the car, all the way to the infotainment system will be what? Not even 10€.
Do I really care if the car's price will be lifted from 24,650€ to 24,680€ for a feature that I'm gonna use everyday and is legitimately handy? A little more than 0.1% of the car overall value?
The Citroen c1 and Peugeot 108 gave you camera and the car is cheap as chips. Good quality camera too. All affordable.
When is the ID.3 review coming? 👀
One day it will
No soft touch plastic there )-:
Doesn't matter when the journalist doesn't even know the unit of power. Ah yes, a 52 kilowatts battery. So converted to hp that is a 69 horsepower battery. Facepalm. Matt, get another job
Werner Definitely agree with you on this one. You don’t even need to know anything about EVs in particular because this is just basic physics (and Matt‘s statement was simply lacking logic). Some people should really think about what they want to say before they do!
It will come when it comes
I'm waiting for the day when after reviewing a car Matt will say: definitely avoid... These car reviews are all getting too nice... All of them just buy or shortlist...
no kidding, "carwow avoid cars" is actually a popular search query
Hyundai Kona
To be fair in a sea of cars that are the same, it's quite hard to find a really terrible terrible car...
Most cars are competent enough nowadays, and price is also a factor.
Most cars are just pretty good these days.
@5:18 my ten year old Renault Laguna has the cruise control buttons on the steering wheel, and Renault's audio controls are among the best and most intuitive in the industry that you don't need to look to see what you're doing - that's why they haven't changed the design since the early 80s. Sometimes, it just needs leaving as is...
As a owner of many renaults over the years, the audio controls are 100% logical once you've owned the car for a while. You shouldn't have to look at the steering wheel controls anyways for the other functions, so why would you for the audio?
4:47 Matt listening to Trap Queen got me there
It’s crazy how none of us are interested in the cars we can actually afford 😩
This is more interesting than am Audi RS6 or a McLaren because 99.9999% of people will never afford those.
Cars like this you can afford and actually buy.
I still think its crazy that this tiny car costs 30K..cost of batteries have come down massively so there's no excuse for an electric car to be so much more expensive than a ICE
I feel so called out! 🤣
@@mattcc9435 you're not factoring it costs half to operate and maintain.
if you have a PV array, it can actually cost 0€/km.
you can't have that on ICE
I just bought my mid-range Zoe for 25.5k€, battery included. I think it's a good financial move for long term usage.
@@mattcc9435 cars are more than the sum of its parts development costs are huge for an entirely new power train, electrical systems, software and auxiliary devices (windows wipers/HVAC systems) in some cases all need to be redeveloped. It's still early days for electric cars, early adopters tax is still being applied.
About the media control stick behind the steering wheel. It's actually very natural once you get used to it. Since it has like 2 buttons for volume, a knob for switching stations/tracks and 2 buttons for call accept and switch mode it's actually quite good (tried in Clio gt 2012 and Clio rs line 2019)
Audio Controls behind the steering is perfect! Better than anything else. Total intuitive.
Love your content carwow, you inspired me to start my own youtube channel.
Thank you for motivation.
0% to 100% charge time is really not the relevent stat to keep giving. Going above 80% when charging on route is just silly in most cases.
Also you wouldn't drive to 0%, so 20-80% is more realistic info to give, which on CCS would be 40 min, and on Type 2 would be 1,5 h.
Idk man usually when I’m at 80 and road tripping, it’s not that big a deal for me to wait a bit more to get an extra 20 in
Totally agree! Please DON’T give 0 to 100 time. No one fills a petrol car from bone dry!!
I think 10-80% is more relevant, but I also think the Zoe is a car that requires planning to take longer road trips in, like with the ABRP app or similar. It still charges too slowly to not be a compromise over ICE equivalents, and I'm guessing they didn't improve the built in navigation enough over the ZE 40 to rely on it for charge planning.
true
What kind of car doesn’t have height adjustment for the drivers seat?!? It’s a 30k car for goodness sake
an electric one. you pay 30k for new technology, not the comfort or gadgets
For 30k, I would rather buy a new vw t roc or an used Audi Q5. Its much better
not 30k, but 29 449£
Do most car models in Europe have this feature, electric, petrol/diesel?
@@tarikajvazi9066 "For 30k, I would rather buy a new vw t roc"
And you definitely should do that. But if for some reason you want electric OR live in a Norway and soon will be without other options, you're going to pay 30k for car without height adjustment or 60k for car that have all you are used to from normal cars.
I'm driving the top of the range version of this car, it's a 2020 model ZE50, until my Megane E-Tech arrives next week. I think it's brilliant, I'm a big bloke and have found it comfortable, the handling is fine, but I'm not a hooligan. The boot is huge for a little hatchback apart from the sub woofer takes up a bit of space in the boot. The infotainment system is better than any other car I've used, that includes a BMW330E, Audi E-Tron, VW ID4 and a Hyundai Kona Electric. I agree with all Matt's negatives, but the positives far out weigh them. I was astounded that I could do 200 miles on the motorway in eco mode. No doubt you could knock 50 miles off that in the winter. A really good practical car IMHO.
I love how Mat throws parcel shells that are unable to be stored properly
Mat even took the effort to colour himself equally to the Zoe! @10:47
You forgot to mention that the zoe has 22 kWh type 2 ac charging, so you are not stuck to finding ccs chargers that work. Nearly every public charger in france, Spain & Ireland offers this feature. Wish my zoe had this.
This is an excellent review. Maybe next year I'll get one. I was planning to get a 2019 model, but then this gem was shown. I'm ecstatic right now.
It’s about time electric ⚡️ car manufacturers developed some sort of retractable charging lead thing! Instead of the big heavy lump of lead in the boot 🚙 great review as always Mat👍🏼
Renault never had the cruise control at the back of the steering wheel ;) Also, the point of the music control behind the steering wheel is for better ergonomics. While taking a turn, you can still change songs and volume without having to look for the control upside down on the steering wheel - it becomes muscle memory then and is easily done while turning, even though it seems far fetched, I often do this, something I would not be able to do on many other cars
Yeah exactly my old Megane 2 rs had the cruise control on the front and love the music control at the back
Your wrong about the gear selector, you don't need park as it has an automatic hold next to the electronic parking brake. This works well at traffic lights and the parking brake comes on automatically when you stop the car at the end of your journey.
Loving your channel Mat
That parcel shelf toss 🤣 welcome back Matt
Me: *opens phone*
Mat not even 0.0000001 seconds later: *get a load of this hot hatch*
Hot hatch😂😂😂
How many are just watching these videos for Mat 😁
Hi Mat, interesting review but nitpicking a little I think. Regarding not having 'park mode' - not really needed because of the 'auto brake hold' function when you come to a stop, handbrake will then turn on after a period of time if you haven't set off again.
Glove box is a little small but I suppose it's called a glove box for a reason. We put the cars manual etc in the seat pocket, and no, nothing falls out when turning corners!
You can purchase boot underfloor storage, if you're lucky the dealer might throw one in for you. To be honest we haven't had any issues accessing things in there without one.
Infortainment screen is super easy to use and has the best satnav out of the bunch in my opinion, and will even search for nearest charge points if you need one.
Overall the best all rounder as a Fiesta sized replacement. Completely happy with ours.
Howdy, great review as always Mat! Now if only Renault would come to the U.S!😸😻😸
Matt - “It’s not all negative though..."
Me - "Yes it is."
But you get that thing to clean the infotainment screen
@@charlesmuneri which didn't work.

Great review, I prefer to know all the negatives rather than find them out after the sale.
Just subscribed liked ,,and i will be with every video mat
I'm getting one next year, maybe. I was going to get a 2019 model but then this beauty got announced. To say I'm excited is an understatement. Great review btw, as always!
Be sure it’s what you want. I had one and after a few days you begin to discover just how cheap it is. Range is good but the car itself is pretty garbage to be honest.
@@anothertesla7284 I had one and I Disagree, they are ok for what you paid for. It has more than 265000km without a single fault. And his size for the City is the best.
@@anothertesla7284 I have driven one in rental and it was a very pleasing experience, especially when coming from cheap ICE like my 2009 VW Polo. I understand however that the level of finition is not on pair with many cars of the same price however, although hard plastic is so common
@Ashley Bailey, I fully support you, Fiesta ST ex-owner here, was also looking at the previous gen Zoe for years, and this new gen looked good enough to actually go for it, drove 3300 km since buying it and it's a dream to switch away from gas engines (although I dearly miss the ST's noise and suspension). The Zoe 135 hp motor has decent punch, you can always get some smiles out of it although the suspension is not sporty.
Did you buy one?
3:08 kWh, not kW
12:20 kW, not kWh
Other than that, pretty neat video :)
yes, thought exactly the same - and surprising from a professional as Matt
I do like the london tube map embossed in to the headliner. That's nice.
Love Mat's accent❣️
I would love to see the Zoe against the Jimny in a drag race 😄
I drive the old zoe at work really fun littel car! 😁
Wow😍😍😍 thanks for this amazing review 🔥🔥🔥 👍
The 👍 print to show you where to press is a good idea.
Me: I want a new S-Class review!
Matt: Renault Zoe?
All jokes! From your friends at Rev Media!
Ahahahah good one!!
Just a heads up that Renault removed airbags from the facelifted version resulting in a ZERO star Euro NCAP rating
Been waiting for this
Hey mat bro......love you man
Without any lade fabulous review of awsome car by renau
Its great man
Mat watson, please review the new maserati Sports car. Big fan ♥️
Even Mat's, good points about this car were bad.
Mat, you grab the wheel of the adjuster just in between the thumb and the index finger while your palm faces the mid panel 😉
I got one around a month ago as a business car at my work.
Everything Matt says I agree.
About seat adjustments, it is really weird, to be honest, I'm 184cm in height and it's is almost too high for me, I can drive it without bumping my head, but it is close and it is a really weird feeling, not comfortable seating position at all.
I average 13kw per 100km which is good for mixed driving.
Mini electric when Matt? I want to see that compared to the Zoe since it looks a bit better.
Still waiting for the review of the Mercedes-AMG GLE63s coupé
The stereo controlles behind the steering wheel are very usefull. In every Renault's.
First honest review I have found that does not grovel to the manufacturer and repeat ad verbatim everything the manufacturer says without actually validating the claims.
Why can’t they just make affordable electric cars that you’d actually like to be seen in 😂
Like a Sinclair C5 😏
the rear is horrible but the rest of the car's nice.
or at least make them comfortable!
Lee Sullivan the C5 is an electric bike with a boot and is not technically a car
@@EliasSchmid00exactly, but why won't people stop giving priority to "being cool"? it's a car, it's a tool, it's not made to show off. so many problems which don't exist. people just don't give a shit what car you drive to buy groceries
Honestly, an electric version of the Clio would've sold me better than this.
Exactly idk what the point of this car is
This basically an electric Clio 😆
@@SeaRasp a compact city car that has no competitor selling globally and is cheap to run. Clio is too big to move around efficiently with this drivetrain.
@@ytlurker220 that is just wrong the Zoe IS a Clio but ugly
Well, you are in the minority given that this became the best selling BEV in Europe 2020, beating out Tesla Model 3.
Great info 😊
Funny thing loaded one in a container yesterday for shipping, and driven it. Its an okey car, looks good for a A segment car.
Everyone wants a drag race between the new and old defender stock 😇
Maserati just released a new supercar so this wasn't really the video I was expecting
Regarding the radio control behind the steering wheel, I own a Renault and a Mazda with the radio controls on the steering wheel and honestly, I prefer the radio control behind the steering wheel as Renault cars have. For me it's a plus.
Apart from the bigger battery and consequent higher range you just described precisely my 2014 Zoe. Many defects you can live with :
Change the rims for smaller lighter ones and you can have a similar performance as the 135HP version, the Rlink can be tweaked to run Android auto quite easily and the screen size is adequate, climate control is quite good, the older Q versions can charge at 43kW not far from renaults "optional" 50kW charger, the app that can pretty much just give you the charge state (starting the AC remotely never works, did you test that on the new one?) . But one defect you rarely can circumvent is Renault service support... They rarely help you out with very needed updates that affect daily use (mostly BMS updates). That's why I've been sticking it out for over a year now, waiting for my e208 (deliveries have been massively delayed by Covid-19). Sorry Renault, maybe next time.
Niice❤️❤️

Stereo control behind the steering wheel is brilliant, Ford has it as well. You! should know the whole point is to not need to look at the controls.
Trap queen! Lol can we get a short video of matt singing that lol
Is "faux leather" not just vinyl, like base model cars had in the 70s and 80s?

Radio controls should always be behind the steering wheel. You can always find them and use them without looking at them.
Mat: *complains for 10 minutes straight* “...and that brings me on to 5 annoying things about the Zoe!”
Yeah, seemed to complain more about the ZOE than show what’s good about it from the get go.
Remember, the Zoé is electric from scratch like the Teslas , unlike the "electrified" mini and 208 or golf
Always better like that
208 is from scratch also, it's a brand new platform

You guys have a lot more options for electric cars than us in the US
Pretty sure those 15inch standard wheels were steelies 👀
16 inch alloys, none of them come in steel. You need the iD 3 for that!
It's hilarious reading all the Zoe-hating comments here, five months later, when we know that this became the best selling BEV in Europe 2020, beating Tesla Model 3.
So these comments didn't age very well 😂😂😂
Some critique do have a point. Zoe has many shortcomings and its main advantage is that, it is quite "cheap". So there's a reason for its popularity not only in 2020 but in last 7 years actually.
And I'm saying it as a Renault fan, who just bought new Megane. Car half that expensive with far superior features.
Interesting and informative video.
The Zoe is not a bad car at all. But when you consider that a new Ford Fiesta can be bought for £16500 or less, then the Zoe does look very expensive.
Renault is not the only offender with regards to excessive over-pricing. The petrol version of the VW Up starts from around £10,000. But the electric version of the VW Up starts from £23500.
Realistically , Renault need to take £10K off the price before all of these discounts are offered. Therefore the Zoe would come-in at around £16K.
When You do the infotainment system can you do a sound test pls as none are on the internet for the Bose system
Imagine this as a hot hatch. That would be amazing.
They made a one-off last year, absolute monster, just search Zoe 460 hp on CZcams.
John - TESLA is making a Hot Hatch in 2023 !!!!
9:20 imagine how old is this video consider that Math has the S10+(for people who don't know Math one month ago buy an S20)
Maths it's fun
I love these vids to much
Matt bro did abit of a stoopid moment on the backdoor handle, the thumb is smart because the majority of the time it's not you sitting in the back so safe to assume they would be unfamiliar with the door mechanism
Having owned the Zoe for nearly 3 weeks I'd say that the Zoe is worth buying. The prices for the ZE50 are comming down. You can buy a 3 year old model for about £14,000. Once you have a fast charger you are quids in at 2p per mile with certain off peak tariffs. There simply is no other car for that kind of money unless you like driving something powered by fossil juice.

where can you put in suggestions for a car revieuw? Can some one help? I really want Matt to do a review on a Mercedes-Benz a250e. I cannot decide if I should buy the car or not. Thank you in advance.
