- Why did Penelope replaced the mole? Penelope's portrayal in Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time is one big can of worms. Her betraying the gang came off very unusual considering her reasoning.
Originally, a mole was planned as being the boss for episode Mice and Mechs. For some reason, Sanzaru decided to scrap that character in favor of Penelope betraying the gang. Let's discuss.

@@VtnVivi Maybe something closer to Crash 4 acting as a true successor or alternative timeline were she never left Bentley's side to begin with but still get kidnap and breaks free to warn Bentley and the others.

@@saltbaker8683 My issue with that "sequel" is that it still repeats the same mistake of making an ally into a villain out of nowhere. It's just switched from Penelope to McSweeney.

I think she need a redemption arc. She didn't explained why she betrayed the gang. She tried to explain but nobody understood. Bad writing is the real villain in this Penelope stuff. Bentley being obsessed with the Thievius Racconus is not a good reason to give a time machine that could destroy the time and space to jealous skunk.
Either redemption if written well or side villain again.....but better reasoning.
I could see a redemption moment but that would require her to have another time machine and go to the Connor timeline, though I. Honestly don't get why paradox didn't go after Connor given his backstory.
One idea I've had is that instead of Penelope being a villain, they could have revealed that Paradox was her mentor when she first started out. Maybe, before the start of the game, he reaches out and tricks her into building him a time machine (for "finding rare artifacts").
Once Penelope learns the truth, there's a struggle and she ends up getting sent back to Medieval times. Then one of two things could happen: 1) she builds a make shift suit and ends up aiding Sly and the gang when they show up, or 2) she has to create a problem for the Cooper timeline so that the gang will notice and bring a time machine to her.
So we can still have a Penelope plot twist, Bentley could fear that she betrayed him, and finding Penelope could still be part of the mission. All without making her a villain in a way that makes no sense.
I guess the mole was just a way to avoid spoiling Penelope as a villain... By selling Bentley's time travel studies to LeParadox she became the mole in the group after all

I guess to make an interesting twist... and time travelling, breaking the timeline then to then break Penelope and Bently's romance...
The motive is a bit of a mixed bag.
I mean it could've been a good twist. We don't know anything about her past before the black baron era so if it they made some effort to like her past to it it could've worked but it just felt shallow
I always thought it would've been a cool twist if the black knight turned out to be Raleigh instead of Penelope, plus the chapter would fit Raleigh's background and motives with little change to its setting. For example:
Raleigh is a skilled machinist so it's possible he could make robotic guards and a mechanical suit of armor to ride in.
He could have created the black knight disguise for protection, given how small and frail he normally is.
He might still have a grudge against Sly, so he could have teamed up with Le Paradox to satisfy that grudge.
I always thought it was strange why Raleigh and Mz Ruby are (presumably) still in jail, but Muggshot and Panda King are both out of jail during the events of Sly 3.
They might also have gone with Penelope to not only to boost her popularity but also to show how terrifying LeParadox’s manipulation is. If know the right words to say to your target, you can even get them to turn on their loved one and tempt them to take a darker path. He was a master of persuading other criminals to do his dirty work, usually by taking advantage of them. For Toothpick it was his Wild West dream. For the Grizz, it was his vendetta against the art world. For Penelope, I would say it was her relationship with Bentley.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if Penelope originally went to work for LeParadox in order to get era items for Bentley’s time machine since he is a collector of many things, but ended up getting corrupted by LeParadox in the process.
Penelope was a good Girlfriend for Bentley in The third game.

If u didn’t know. The Egypt area that Sly ends up in was supposed to be an episode in the game. There was supposed to be 6 total as Egypt was the first episode but it got cut. The mole could have been the villain for the Egypt episode
I like the idea of Penelope questioning the Cooper code and how she's been shown to be competitive and would likely want to prove her intelligence to the world but yeah, the execution was messy and things like her bad mouthing Bentley behind his back was uncharacteristic of her.
Don’t you guys find it weird that around the same time they replaced the mole character with Penelope they also created the hypnotist Miss Decibel. A traitor and a hypnotist in the same game that both went through last minute alterations. It’s like sanzaru is trying to tell us why Penelope really became a bad guy.
“We could have made billions selling weapon designs.” That was the line that Penelope said that made absolutely no sense.
Was money ever an issue? They had access to the Cooper fortune. And weapons? Does she want to take over the world all of the sudden? Again, made no sense.
Now Penelope wanting to take on another challenge, seeing as how she has always been ambitious, could have been an angle.
Sly holding Bently back? How? Is it his morals? Again makes little sense.
I for one can’t think of a valid reason why Penelope would betray Bently. How could it be well executed?
They didn't get Cooper fortune, because vault (and Dr. M's fortress) collapsed.

@@SuperWorldJumper Oh, I always thought Bentley's "It was worth of millions" was just idiom and the Cooper fortune behind the cane was "showing" the worth of Cooper cane (thanks 10 year old me). But I checked it from Sly wiki, and you're right.

Plenty of people have risked losing love over self-ambition, especially when they convince themselves, that their goals are right.
She was a dogfighting champion and equipped a turret onto rc cars. So weapon designing would some what make sense if it’s to describe her talents.
You know, when Bently discovered Paradox got his time machine through her, I'm surprised they didn't just go back in time to stop Bently from making the time machine in the first place.
Penelope's time machine was built off Bentley's design.....Even if they were to go back in time, Penelope would've maybe designed one all on her own. I do see what you mean though, time travel :P
Hey Vivi, you know what I noticed recently, the rooftops in the level “Off-Beat” from Crash 4 are eerily similar to the rooftops in Sly Cooper 😬(Idk, I know it’s random, maybe it’s just me, but I figured I’d point it out and mention it, lol 😂) I think it’s so cool, not gonna lie!😄 Imagine if this is a hint towards a Sly Cooper game coming, and they know about it 😮 It’s interesting..
This will sound hilarious but I will find it more believable of Penelope being brainwashed to betray the Cooper Gang instead of willingly betray them.
Heck, I think the level would have been more fun if we have to go in to free her from her imprisonment.
Plus, the details between Bentley and Penelope's relationship could have easily been solved if players have access to the gang's personal diaries or logs too.
Personally, I think the devs just wanted Penelope out of the picture. Making her Bentleys girlfriend was a neat thing in Sly 3, but moving forward she would have been quite redundant and would have struggled to organically intergrate into the core team because her skillset is just a more specialised variant of Bentleys. Carmelita does not really have this problem and has always been a irregular ally of the gang rather than a permanent addition. She would have been best used as a pilot or driver, which would have enabled an even grater mission variety, but the time travel theme really does not allow for that. So I think the betrayal happened because the Devs had no other use for her.
Personally, I think the best use of Penelope would have been as an ally in the present time. That way she could employ her own skills to oppose the villain. Maybe have a few missions where she uses her vehicles to steal an item the gang can use to travel to the next era they need to be in?
Yeah if anything Penelope would've remained a background character. Reading what you wrote, Dimitri was porbably considered as such.
If the original mole boss had stayed, would Penelope still had been in the game, like for help?
Or would she end up getting rescued, if the plot had been about "the Mole" was the one that kidnapped Penelope?

I think if some random new character was responsible for a time machine, this would have raised ANOTHER can of worms.

- If anyone can make a time machine, does this mean your whole reality could be rewritten at any point? Paranoia maybe?
This one is tough to piece together. I get the character development stuff and all that, but it has so many flaws, I always lose track of which ones I've patched and which ones I haven't. I wonder whether or not the mole would have actually worked.
Also, I'd like to agree with what Bentley said in Sly 4 during the Black Knight boss fight.
Like the little detail about how after Penelope betrayed Bentley, he drew a moustache and some other stuff on a photo of Penelope on his binoclulars.
There’s probably a somewhat good reason why Penelope is a boss villain in thieves in time instead of the mole. You see apart from the guru, each of the new cooper gang members were former boss villain from each sly game. Panda King from the first, Dimitri from the second, and Penelope from the third. Basically SuckerPunch made each of these former villains are a tribute to each sly game.
When sanzaru decided to make Thieves in Time, they must have realized that eventually one of their villains is going to end up being a member of the cooper gang. So they probably made Penelope a villain in Sly 4, and be the only LeParadox member to escape custody and sending her boyfriend postcards, so that they don’t need to add any new members from the new villains in sly 4, just have Penelope be a tribute to both sly 3 and 4.
I've actually never looked at it that way, interesting!
But I really hope she returned in the next game, probably taking the role like Catwoman, she was a thief, but really love Batman. Credits had shown that she had escaped from prison.

If I were to rewrite the entire story of Thieves In Time, I would have kept the Mole. And maybe call him Morris (that's the closest clever name I could think of). The Mole (Morris) would probably use the Black Knight persona and have a secret base that had an underground mine where he can collect either gold, crystals, or some sort of material Le Paradox (quote on quote) "NEEDS" for his plans.
As for the other villains in time periods, I thinks Decibel would be in the musical era of time (like Mozart and probably Beethoven). And the Grizz would be in an era where gangsters were a thing (not sure about specific time period).
And as for Penelope, don't have her betray the Cooper Gang at all and have her be a genuine ally.
I don't like Penelope but I don't hate her. She's always been just kind of there to me, but even then her betrayal confused me. I hope whomever picks up the series for the next installment fixes that issue. The mole and the lizard would've been cool bosses to battle.
We still have no news about a future Sly Cooper 5 but I keep hope, I remember you posted an image on Twitter with the Mascots of Crash, Ratchet, Sly Cooper we had a new Crash Bandicoot , on June 11 Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart will be released and for Sly Cooper to celebrate its future 20 to Sly Raccoon which was released on September 23, 2002 in 2022 there maybe chances that Sony will give the GREEN Fire for a new Sly Cooper after that this is only a theory for me, but they say that it is the Fans of this SAGA who must manifest themselves to Sony yet it has been 8 years that the Suite has been waiting.
There’s also something odd about the later modified boss lineup for sly 4 (The colored one with Penelope’s giant overlords arm behind the rest). On the far left of the boss lineup, sly cooper was also featured in that lineup as well. You don’t suppose sanzaru was going to make sly cooper go bad along with Penelope, or at the very least have to battle him in a boss fight?
I was literally thinking about this after finishing Thieves in Time's story now. I wonder how it would have been if the Mole was kept as the villain for Of Mice and Mechs

Seriously, if the sequel doesn't explain this away with mind control via implanted secondary personality, and just enough body horror to make this whole farce worth while, I will be quite sad.
vtnvivi I feel bad and sorry for Bently as he was sadly nothing more than a pawn/tool for Penelope as she wanted bently all to herself in sly 4 that she didn't think that la paradox was using her, or that Bently would chose sly and marry over her.More so because like nebula they trusted her and sadly like Neyla she thought she was doing the right thing for bently it was a unexpected twist that we sly sly fans and the Cooper gang, and even carmalita didn't see coming, but again the build up to it could have also been in some ways better developed.iI also feel these lover's betrayal quotes work on gently 's loyalty to the Cooper gang as they are family and these two quotes sum it up I feel at least for Penelope also

I suppose, but I would rather it be Sir Galleth still, fighting against him, and if Penelope was captured and brainwashed by the Mole to be his pretend medieval wife,( had the plot gone that way) then the main mission would have been about stopping the Mole and freeing Penelope.
The Mole could have had a personality similar to Toothpick, to having a liking for being a Knight,( but not making them too alike) and he spots Penelope and decided to make her his pretend wife.
The side story with her could had been about, Penelope got captured by La Paradox and was forcefully brainwashed(after she kept refusing to betray Bentley and the gang) by Miss Decibel in order to create the Time Blimp, then after Paradox got what he wanted, he let's the Mole do what he pleases with a now brainwashed Penelope.

I'd say that Fixes everyone's problem with that part of the story, so in the end,( though I do not mind it being Carmelite, Murray and Bentley trying to find Sly) it wouldn't 3 but the 4 of them trying to find Sly.
Though if Penelope is deemed redeemable by the next Dev team, she can still end up playing a role in finding Sly, like if Carmelite uses her connections in interpol to find her, if she wants Bentley to find her. anyways.
I’m gonna be honest with you here all the villains of Sly Cooper 4: El Jefe, Toothpick, The Grizz, Penelope, Miss Decibel and Le Paradox are absolute monsters.
Now that Penelope escaped from Europe’s high security penitentiary she’s now on the run and is a fugitive and if Carmelita is assigned to the case to recapture Penelope then I don’t know what to say. If Penelope escaped from the penitentiary and goes to Bentley’s lab where she finds Bentley then she’d tearfully run to him, hug him and give a deeply passionate loving kiss at the same time crying her eyes out confessing her love to Bentley. Bentley tries to push her away because he can’t forgive her yet but Penelope’s hug was so tight and her kiss was so deep that Bentley can’t fight back he let’s go and you know how it goes.
Of the rest of the Cooper gang Sly, Murray and Dimitri still express disgust towards Penelope for what she did but Bentley would try to convince them to give Penelope a second chance. After Penelope is given a second chance Sly, Murray and Dimitri accept but they all give Penelope a warning and the consequences if she shows signs of treachery again and Bentley would do the same. I’d say that Bentley will say “I don’t know if we’ll ever get back together but I can forgive you but if you show any signs of treachery or even a good reason to hurt or kill my friend then you know what’s going to happen”. Now that Penelope is on the run there’s a good chance Sly and his gang will run into Carmelita. If that happens then Sly will have to have good convincible reasons what he’s doing to convince his girlfriend Carmelita and after that Carmelita’s career is on the line.
You know if I was in Sanzaru Games I would fix this mess by giving out some good ideas for how the story of Sly Cooper 5 will go and I would certainly join the project because I loved the series like I love cars like Lexus.

I will be honest, I loved playing as the panda king in sly 3 more than Penelope. If Penelope does come as a playable ally in sly 5 along with her black knight suit, I would definitely want to play as her. The betrayal in sly 4 is probably just to give the story and Penelope more interest.

Sir, I wanted to take the time to thank you for the content you bring with this and having one of your Sly copper videos being the first thing I saw I loved it all and still going through them but if I may borrow some time from you I wanted to asks, you had said in one of the Sly videos that there were writing issues with sly Thieves In Time, I wanted to know any points you would give for a series like this moving forward with pros and cons from all 4 games. If you haven't heard there is a fan trailer up that is titled cooper which is as you guess taking place after Sly Thieves In Time and is following from what loosely can be gathered about his son and him trying to find his dad. What points could you give in a direction that from a fan side be this is where the series should go as to reclaim that uniqueness it themselves had once had through fixing the errors that the last sly game had left. I thank you for the time as I continue to watch your work on what amounts to the entirety of my childhood.

While the Penelope twist is easily one of the worst things I've ever seen (as someone who actually likes Sly 4 a lot overall), I think I actually might have an idea of what they were thinking when they wrote it.
Basically, they were thinking of Dr. M.
Specifically, they thought it would be interesting to give Sly his own "Dr. M", a member of the Cooper Gang who grew bitter and jealous towards Sly, like M had done with Connor, and ends up turning on the Gang as a result. Since the obvious Dr. M parallel of the Gang, Bentley, had already firmly eliminated the possibility of himself ending up like M in Sly 3, and since Bentley turning on the Gant would be even worse than what we got, Sanazaru turned their attention to the OTHER tech genius in the Cooper Gang, and ran with it from there.
Penelope's motives in Sly 4 do nicely parallel M's own motives, not just in the jealousy towards Sly, but also in her excessive greed, much like how M was so consumed by greed for the contents of the Cooper Vault that he literally chose to die instead of leaving it behind.
Again, the twist is awful and completely fails to line up with Penelope's characterization from Sly 3, but this is what I think they were going for.
If there is going to be a Sly 5, and continuing the time travel gimmick, Penelope might return while masquerading as Black Beard (if only to continue the theme).
I wish there was a Sly 5. If I was in Sanzaru Games I would join the project because I love the series like I love cars like Lexus plus fix the problem that has been plaguing fans who've been playing Sly Cooper 4 for years and years.
A video game is a video game regardless if the developers are subsidiary or independent.
Black Baron and Black Knight were both titles of mystery fighters. Black Beard was a nickname for a well known criminal. It wouldn’t work. Except maybe as one of sly’s jokes.
@@TylerTheShepherd I did say masquerading as Black Beard. As in, she is taking his identity and pretending to be him. She's a clever woman. I'm certain she can pull off a convincing disguise. Or, as you said, it could be a joke, and the gang will have to fight the real (in-universe) Black Beard. Rule of three, and what not.
Glad to see more people we're not a fan of Penelope's betrayal. After they set up such a lovely couple in Sly 3, Penelope switching sides AGAIN felt so out of place...
The Mole would've been a way more interesting choice and him wearing armor would've still made sense. It probably would've been more funnier too! Imagine Sly and the gang facing of against this HUGE knight, only to find out there was a tiny mole inside of it!

Not a fan of the betrayal myself but I do see one good aspect of Penelope being black knight instead of mole. There’s the strong possibility of black knight returning as a playable character in future games. As you said they were a lovely couple in sly 3 and the fact that she’s sending him postcards at the end of sly 4 does show she still has interest in him.
Yeah, I agree with you Vi, though I didn't mind the plot twist, I agree that there could had been a better way of explaining Penelope's betrayal.
Either the brainwashed thing or a reasonable explanation that the next Dev team will have to explain to us.

I can agree. I mean if I was in concept of sly Cooper show I'd release false character bios. Sly thief as a drunk father who lost his son, Murray a ex military and Bentley a hard core hacker. Just to release no no spoilers and when the teaser trailer drops fans ask why the change I'll say "you seen the gang in your childhood I want to curveball new fans as I seen a show similar but more mature Called leverage so I hope you enjoy the series "

Penelope's betrayal has a parallel to Batman Beyond's April Moon, though I don't really like what they did.
I think the mole and toothpick levels would of been too similar so i guess they made Penelope a mole instead

allot of critics conveniently forget some of peneolpe's character flaws from sly 3, she's definitely a flawed person, but i agree: the execution is where it slipped, it was built up to throughout the game, yet comes & goes so abrubptly.
But in the grand scheme: It does give potential for the "loyalty test" in a future redemption plot. In a way, it seems her old underhanded glory-seeking habits from her "Black Baron" days have started to resurface. If ya think about it in hindsight, it's not really hard to believe. Out of all members of the gang, Penelopy has probably spent the least amount of time with them. She only really got close to Bentley. She doesn't have years of familiarity like the rest (the guru spent a long year or 2 mentoring Murray, so he counts).
While she may have strong feelings for Bentley, & want's (what she thinks is) good for him, she hasn't really been able to connect with the rest of them & really Get what they're about. a side plot in Sly 5 could be the true "test of friendship" (as corny as it sounds,) for her throughout the game.
This time, don't have her just appear in 1 level exclusively, have her be involved in some way every now and then till her big character moment. Where she's gotta make the big choice weather to join back with em and burry the hatchet for good.. or at least make up and go separate ways an anti-hero of sorts.. Maybe that's too much for Sly Cooper, but at least it's something.

Im in the well ok group, it was sad to see this happen to Bentley especially after what happened in Sly 2 everyone wanted a win for the nerdy cripple and break of the stereotype of hot guy gets hot chick at the end.
But what everyone forgets is that Penelope originally was a villian that was not above lying, cheating using henchmen and attempt to kill Sly and his gang.
But I do agree to wish that this was better written with more details thrown into the mix.

You are right, it was poorly executed and poorly planed out. If they we're to take their time in developing this, it would've turned out better, Thieves in Time was a mistake the whole series should've ended with Sly 3, If I we're them I would've made a comic book in after the events of Honor among Thieves telling of what Sly and the rest of his friends did after the game itself. Admittedly, I don't mind her as a villian.
If anything she's a decent foil to Bentley: Intelligent, independent, but to the point that she lacks loyalty to others and works "better" alone.
But even I can't justify the Black Knight arc. Before Sly 4, she never gave a crap about money or power. Hell she only became the BB because she was too young to join a dog-fighting league, and the disguise just stuck. 😭
Would've understood it if she just simply missed following *her own* code, rather than someone else's. But alas... Thieves in Time exists. 😔

If Bentley were to use the Thievius Raccoonus to travel through time, would it work? would it take him to the right era/location to save Sly? before a Certain psychopathic owl gets to him first. .. because honestly wouldn’t want the series to end with clockwerk killing sly.
They would have to decide to jump at random, in order to find Sly, Bentley could make calculations based on which timeline Sly would be in.

The mole could have been a thief who finds potential places to steal from finds Bentley’s place uses his drill to get inside finds time travel plans obviously you would take those and either already knows or works for le paradox or has a place to sell the plans to someone and le paradox buys them and just like that the rest of the game would happen and makes sence too

I think she was just salty about Sly ditching her when she got captured by Lefwee, that’s always been my theory anyway. Also part of me does have to wonder if she had a point when she talked about her reasons for joining up with LeParadox.
Perhaps she did....but the writing didn't exactly justify it.
I had to address this, but Sly never ditched penelope to Lefwee. They couldn't fight him right away due to being outnumbered & outmatched, which is why they spent time out at sea trying to upgrade their ship to stand a chance.

I'm fine with her redesign but at the same time what was the point? Her original design was already ok, plus the betrayal wasn't necessary either..... As much as I personally liked this game it's hard to defend it when the devs put in problems like this.
I just played this chapter today. I saw the logo on black knights chest and drew conclusions about the symbol representing her and hoped she was being mind controlled or something but no... this game has been only a let down from start to finish. They have changed so many things to the worse and so many characters made different just because? I hope if sly5 ever comes out they fix their mistakes. Gameplay is great but story and characters have become a shell of themselfs and i hate it...
Im sorry for my negative feelings if you like the game thats good for you but i cant bring my self to enjoy this as much as i want to. I think the penelope chapter was the last straw and i might not finish the game at all

Yeah the mole might have been better the whole Penelope thing was pretty forced in my opinion.
I don't mind they want add the twist but the problem they never build it up or foreshadowed her betray , this is almost bad with Disney trying with their own twists villains while is so easy to write open villains , it never work it felt cheap
now I bet everyones hates Pealaphe because of this betary out of nowhere , they are going to explain this in a flashback of pealape why she betray team Cooper , if the writers learn from their mistake.

Who the fuck went oh we should change dimitris role in this game to penelope like not that they did but when you think about it like the one trailer showed dimitri disguised as sly like he was running around stealing posing as him I mean it would have hurt me a bit but it would have been waaay cooler to see him do that and pull that off and also be like you guys left me with your book and hideout I'm on the inside then turn later and do that whole schtick but ya know that's my 2¢
