    This song is the first time we heard the phrase "Dead Presidents". Rakim, imo, is the standard for every emcee!

    80's was him, Kane, kool G Rap, LL , krs one, public enemy, the first golden era of rap.....can't forget slick Rick and Dougie, mc lyte Queen Latifa salt n pepa, just-ice .....smh dam what a time to be alive ...

    Rakim added a new dimension to emceeing. I will say that there were so many great emcees that came out of that era that its a disservice to say one was the best over another from that time they all added something and they all had their own original flow

    Rakim changed the game! Before him everybody had "huh hu hu huh" in every other verse to keep their rhyme on cadence.....imo "My Melody" changed all that

    KRS-ONE, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane in this era. Don't sleep on Heavy D from this time as well. This version is the remix which was the most popular version. The original was more of a showcase for Eric B and his DJing ability.

      @afrolanticanjurisprudence8849 I remember that track from TLa Rock. Not the same style as Rakim. I had never heard anyone like Rakim before he came out and the whole rap game changed after Rakim blew up. Nas himself cites Rakim as a huge major influence.

    KRS-1, Rakim, Chuck D are the gold standard. Big Daddy Kane had some great songs as did Kool Moe Dee and young LL Cool J. And an array of female rappers.

    This is the remix babe. I hate this version personally...too much mixing and different elements added and you don't hear all of the verses. Listen to the original then you will get the true effect of the song. And it's called "paid in full" not and. The best MCs are broken down by era and they are the ones who changed the direction of rap music. Rakim and Kane were the best in late 80s. LL Cool J killed mid 80s. Biggie and Nas killed it early 90s along with Black Thought and Big L. Big Pun killed late 90s with JayZ. Other notable trailblazers are Run DMC and Kurtis Blow in the 80s, and Mobb Deep, Snoop, Tribe called Quest, Das Efx in early to mid 90s
