  • The car has been plagued with low power and jerky/hard shifts between all gears (1-2, 2-3. and 3-4) - automatic downshift gear changes have been smooth.
I'm reinstalling the vacuum line into the vacuum modulator and adjusting the vacuum modulator cap from a 8:00 position to a 6:00 position to smooth out the jerkiness of the gear changes.
Also adjusting the transmission Bowden Cable to hold each gear longer to increase power during acceleration.
Note: car is on ramps, NOT on jack stands as I said in the video

My C220 W202 is also a 1996 model with only 88 000 km ( Yes ; it's true ). It is the South African spec. Elegance version and has the MB722.4 autobox with 4 gears. Now this vehicle was fastidiously maintained and although I love the car, the rather abrupt gearchance especially between 1st and 2nd was uncomfortable when compared to my japanese and korean auto boxes. Your clip on the pressure modulator adjustment was very informing and I must say thank you for it - truly helpful. You made mention of moving it anti clockwise to the 5 o'clock position. This did not make any noticeable difference , however my modulator allowed a 180 degree anti clockwise movement without me forcing anything. This has made the world of difference. Normal driving in Standard mode ( The SA boxes have S for standard and E for economy as we don't now what snow looks like out here and have to look at Christmas cards to get an idea). Full throttle application see solid defined changes without any slip.
Regarding the Bowden cable adjustment - well I have decided to "not mend if it ain't broken" and leave well enough alone. What i did find is that when i depressed the accelerator pedal all the way down , the throttle body did not fully open. adjusted the cable and voila.
Strangely enough I have picked this up from a few other conversations with C220 owners, however the C180 and C280 owners did not have this problem. From a conspiracy point of view one has to wonder if MB South Africa might have been concerned that no one would purchase a C280 if they experienced a full throttle capable C220?!!! and then ensured that the full throttle on the C220 would never really be 100% of throttle by slacking off the cabe adjuster.

Never trust those cement blocks, they crush like eggs the way you set them, only flat how they suppose to lay they sustain a lot bigger weight... But straight down... If one of your wheels/ramp would fail that would be a diagonal force that would brake the blocks like wood sticks... You put them there for pice of mind that won't work... :). The way you set them they hold like a pocker cards castle...
The ramps should hold 2 tons each one... So you should be more than safe...

With the cap off, do you have to pull the t pin out and turn to change the pressure? Or keep it in place and just rotate? Thanks!

The T-Pin version of the modulator was on the earlier released versions of this model; later versions have the modulator cap and adjuster as one unit - If your modulator has a rubber cap, then you will need to remove the cap and adjust the T-Pin - same logic applies - clockwise to strengthen the shift, counterclockwise to smooth out the shifts. The built-in adjuster model has a white adjuster that you can rotate to get the desired shift strength.

Same as yours. During test, is it safe for disconnected vacuum line to just hang free? This test will be conducted in Park so safe condition. Thanks!

Why don't you use a pointer stick so we can see what you are attempting to show us.
