- Over the course of 10 weeks, TV Presenter Emma Willis will work as a Maternity Care Assistant supporting the charismatic midwife team on the busy maternity unit at UK’s Princess Alexandra Hospital in Essex...
In Episode 2:
Two weeks in to her role as a Maternity Care Assistant Emma has yet to see a natural birth in the hospital, but she’s hoping second time mother Carly will be her first. Five days later, Carly is still waiting to give birth.
The midwife team decide to break Carly’s waters to bring on labour, a risky procedure given she suffers from gestational diabetes and there is a large amount of fluid around her baby as a result.
During her time at the hospital Emma will be trained in various different aspects of the job and this week she’s learning how to measure blood pressure manually. It sounds easy, but it’s anything but and Emma has her work cut out to pass the test.
Emma meets second time mother Lianne and her husband Ashley while doing her rounds. Lianne is expecting twins, but despite only being 34 weeks pregnant she’s already experiencing contractions. In the early hours of the morning there is a change in Lianne’s condition. Her waters have broken and she’s rushed into theatre…
Victoria and her partner Jon arrive at the hospital and within an hour, Victoria is in labor. The birth progresses much quicker than anticipated and midwife Charlotte must draw on all her experience to ensure the baby is delivered safely.

The midwife with the funky hair due is such a thoughtful kind midwife. I think she lost her hair and painted her head black.
Someone speculated on Reddit that it may have been some sort of burn injury causing loss and she chose to paint/have it tattooed black afterwards. You can’t wear wigs as a nurse/doctor typically so I wonder if that’s why. She’s a total sweetheart and her Instagram is so lovely to follow, she answers fans frequently and will elaborate on parts of the show 🥺💛
*I admire ALL women who can give birth naturally...sincerely. 🙏🏻 However, I did receive an epidural and LOVED that it allowed me to visit with my Grandmother, Mother and Mother-in-Law. It’s been 20 years and the day I gave birth is one of my most precious memories... all 3 women have since passed and that day will remain a truly golden moment and memory.* ❤️
Heather, that is absolutely precious .No matter what way you bring a child into this world is still amazing . Everyone is different and because you had a epidural doesn't make you less brave then other woman. You still are amazing for giving life to another human . Nothing can replace that time with dear ones who are no longer here . You gave a huge gift to this world and to your family
I would be terrified if I was in the other room waiting to deliver and I hear a woman screaming so bloody loud😳
😅 same
Emma, ugh she's such a doll and a total sweetheart 💕
As an RN watching with a medical eye, I was concerned at how it was taught to take a BP. Emma's legs were crossed and her arm was not supported at heart level. When she took her trainers BP, same thing with no arm support. And Emma used her thumb to hold down the stethoscope on the trainers arm. It's amazing how many do not take three times to take a proper BP. And, yes, that can adversely affect your reading.
You know, I didn't notice. But you're right. I had a period of time where I had to take my BP a few times ma day. What was told to me was my BP sitting, and then standing where very different.
Your so right
I did notice that
Def noticed that too (not an RN, but i have pulmonary hypertension so am used to blood pressure readings & having to redo them 😂), I think they may have had her learn a few times but only included when she finally got it right. Still should’ve been included though if that is the case imo!
As an LPN, I noticed that as well, but what really jumped out at me was no one was wearing masks in the operating room while she's wide open delivering premature twins. I'm thinking hospital acquired infection. Anyone agree?
Love watching these experiences; they’re simply beautiful!
I love the reaction on Emma’s face for each birth. It’s truly amazing to see the joy and all of the emotion she feels. Each birth is individual and it’s wonderful to see that reflected in her. 💗💗💗
Midwives are absolutely amazing and don't get the credit they so richly deserve❣❣❣ I adore Emma Willis as well❣❣❣ I'm so very happy the twins are doing so well and are at relatively good size...💙💙
Can't wait for the next episode!
That nurse, Emma, is so sweet acting!
Stumbled into this series by accident and I love it. Emma is such a lovely woman! I don't have any children, but I've met a few midwives (or potentials in college). It takes a special person to take that on. It's also interesting to see the difference in prenatal/midwifery in America vs the U.K.
the mother asking her partner if he was relieved as a way to gauge if she should feel like the situation with twin 1 was actually okay was so sweet to me. i love the gesture and not only does it show that she acknowledges her partner had to have been just as alarmed as she was, but shows how much she trusts him
Emma you are an absolute sweetheart, so caring & a beautiful smile!! We need more nurses like you!! Love you Emma!! That Hospital is blessed to have you!! 🤗🙌❤
I love this show. I love labor and delivery. I would love to move to the UK and be a midwife if I didn’t have Crohn’s disease and a kid. I think the UK approach is so much better than here in the US. So much more compassion and all for natural delivery. Not like the US. Rush you in rush you to deliver push csections. They don’t care about moms here or mothers of color. Postpartum and fetal mortality rate is so high here. Birth should be beautiful and how moms want it and advocate for all moms and their health before during and after. It’s not a priority here. I shouldn’t have listened with headphones. 🤣😂🤣 I’m fascinated with UK birthing shows. Thanks for posting I wish people wouldn’t judge others on their appearances or how these women birth. It’s a tough and scary part of motherhood and these midwives go above and beyond and tired and overworked but continue to give moms a great experience.
You are so right I wish I could have delivered my children in the uk too in the united states I felt like just another statistic!
Maureen Curtin forsure. So sad. They don’t care here.
Many do care. Sadly they are restricted due to many rules and insurance companies.
I had a good experience in the USA. I like that I can have an epidural when I want it. The nurses, doctors, and lactation consultants were very attentive to everything and caring. I guess you just have to pick the right hospital?
I absolutely love this series! I live in the US and would love for her to be here and be my midwife. She’s such a doll. she shows true emotion and it’s beautiful!
Ok...iv seen countless births and this one has me in tears ...life is soooo beautiful 💜
Such a beautiful thing
That one lady dr. Hair tho😂😂😂
Who cares about someone's hair.
I am curious too - shaved, tattoo?
She probably has baldness and has chosen to tattoo her head. Regardless of how she looks, she seems a lovely person who cares about her work, so does it really matter?
I was wondering what was on her head. I’m sure there is a reason for it, and it is natural to question when things look different than what one is used to. I never thought about a tattoo, I just wondered if she used a ton of hair products to get her hair to appear glued down. Hmmm... I like the tattoo idea, but MAN!!! That had to HURT!!!!
@@eileenmcdonald3162 Don't care at all She's lovely. Just curious cos it looks different. Problem?
I love Emma, what a kind beautiful soul. I wish I had her by my side when I was giving birth to my son. She is an absolute joy and comfort. Loved it loved it loved it!!!!!
All her screaming was like wow. I have givin birth twice and didn't scream because I was told that it makes it longer and takes away from pushing. Internalizing the scream and using that energy will be much better than screaming. I'll bet she gave everyone a fright especially first time mom's.
I was thinking the same thing 😅
Birth is incredible!
I love Emma! She clearly loves the work and is well suited to being there.
i so love these videos
Okay but that little plastic red lobster apron is not going to keep you from getting baby juice on your outfit lol
EMMA IS A Amazing lady love watching her so joyly
I want to know whats up with that ladys hair not trying to be rude im just curious
Its.....short
If your talking about, ,"Emma," she is absolutely stunning. She has a beautiful soul.
I love this so mush. I really look inside. Beautiful, Thank you! ❤
Much
cynthia g , have you never made a typo? 🤔
Thanks for sharing this amazing beautiful series why don't we have something like this in America?
What are you referring to the show or what Emma is doing? No US insurance company is going to allow a hospital to have just any untrained individual caring and being involved with these situations, which is so absolutely sad. Personally I think if they did allow it they might have more people interested in becoming midwives. Just like Val said as to what her sister thought her duties were going to be, if you think about it those things would be close to all a patient care assistant would do in the states. As for the show there is One born every minute in the states.
We have insurance companies calling the shots here. Not actual medical staff.
One born every minute was filmed in the UK. Not the state's .
@@eileenmcdonald3162 Yes the original version was but there definitely is a US version as well.
I know that it is not filmed in the states, just wish we could get something like this over here in America, not a rip off, but that someone would go lets just follow actual nurses, not create drama, but just enjoy the drama and joys of real life as they are to be enjoyed. But, thanks for the clarification, take care and have a wonderful day.
emma is so cheerful...I wish I had a nurse like her when I had my babies
She is not a nurse . She is a maternity care assistant. Use google.
@@eileenmcdonald3162 you must be fun to be around
Babies are pure souls!!! So cute 😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😍🥰😘
I sure dooooo miss this. I have three kids and three grandbabies.
As an American, I’m endlessly fascinated watching laboring women being asked if they’d like something to eat or drink. I never got anything but a few pieces of crushed ice during any of my 3 labors. It’s so inhumane.
Really?! What the heck! I'm Aussie and always got a cuppa, bickie or sandwich after delivery. But s'pose didn't have to pay for anything either. Jeewiz I feel for Ya's for that 😔 I mean postnatal care.... ongoingly.
Personally, I have never found screaming to be helpful while in labor. I have had two natural births and for me moaning and groaning is better. Screaming tightens the body and actually hinders progress while moaning helps relax the body so that each contraction works to its best potential.
The screaming is a bit much 😲
When I had my first the screaming I did was completely involuntary, so when I hear someone suggest not to scream, I can’t fathom even being able to make that decision.
cynthia g yes, thanks. It’s easy to say “don’t scream. It’s not helpful,” but when I was going through it I had about as much control with the screaming as I did with the pushing. If the midwife had said, “Don’t push,” it would have been totally useless. It was an animalistic urge and there was no earthly thing that could have stopped me. I know every woman is different. Watching these episodes makes me amazed at how much control some women have during labor. I had absolutely zero.
Ratty Hall And it’s totally fine you had zero control. Every labor is different. All that matters is that mom and baby are fine after delivery. I say if you just have to scream...scream.
Personally what others find helpful is really not up to you.
I had a lot of water and my Dr just poked a pin hole in it so it came out slowly - no gush but my contractions started almost immediately.
Danielle Mills Kinda hard to only make a pinhole when the sack is buldging and under pressure. Not all women have a large gush of fluid it depends on how much fluid is around the baby and the baby’s position as it goes down in the pelvic area to come out. A baby with a larger head can act like a stopper. My nephew was that way and when his body came out it was a huge gush of fluid and the doctor got soaked.
No pins are used to rupture amniotic sacs.
@@meiraloraduncan8953maybe doctors should deliver wearing raincoats
I love the midwife with the hair. What is that hair about? Is it slicked down?
Did the blue birthing ball popped
💕
So glad I never had to suffer like this poor woman...OMG
me and my twin was a month eerly and whey are both girls
My twins were 6 weeks early and weighed 6 lbs. 1 oz. and the second was 6 lbs. 3 oz. They did really well but the second baby was breach and when he came out he wasn't breathing. I told the doctor to get in there and start working on him. They did and they even had to use the heart shocker on him. after some time Adam started breathing on his own and he and his brother Aaron have always been extremely close.
Jean Taua *Being a twin myself I consider my sister my best, BEST friend that will always have my back and I’ll always have hers.* 😉
How can anyone not believe in God after they've witnessed the birrth of a precious baby??? To me it's nothing short of one of God's miracles!!!!
Marilyn B AMEN! Truly miraculous! 💕 God bless!
Thank God my husband is not a wuss… I would be livid if he shrank into the corner or ran away… like I’m the one having to do it and it’s half your fault. 😂
Emma are you a Pisces LOL
What’s with one of the midwifes hair? It looks like it’s been painted on except for the back. Chemo, maybe?
Tala S I was wondering that, too.
Someone said it's a tattoo.
Why can’t she be different who cares she’s doing great things. Don’t like it keep it so your self. You don’t know why or what she’s going through
What's with not paying attention to the subject of the show? Do you have ADD?
@@eileenmcdonald3162 that's rude to insinuate. It's natural to wonder because it did look different.
So nobody's gonna say anything about the midwife's hair? I'm so confused. Good show.
I'm very confused about it
I think she's probably had alopecia or has alopecia and can't wear a wig because of her profession so she had it tattooed??
Why people can’t be different you don’t know what she has going on.
@@crohniequeenab she can be different. What does that have to do with my confusion?
So you want to be the jerk picking on someone's hair?
Amazing how many’s ads there are when this channel puts out mediocre documentaries at that.
Why no epidurals?
That’s what I said. Lol. Give them drugs.
Please, what is on the mid=wife's head?
That's what I was trying to figure out
Me too! I don’t know.
Pretty sure it’s a tattoo

The screaming too much had both mine lamaze noonescreamed like that
Big friggen deal
Lovely lady, loved the video... I do wish the narrator would stop calling her emmer her name is Emma, no R in this name... just saying...
It's how they say it as an English . They pronounce everything differently. He knows there isn't an "R" in it. Just like people from Canada pronounce 'about' as. "abowt" . Southerners and northeners pronounce everything different. The narrator knows it's emma.
Well Crystal, I understand the differences in pronunciations around the world. It’s still wrong to add a letter that’s not included in the spelling of her name...it’s just annoying, lol
marianne langford it’s not wrong if that’s their culture and how they pronounce it.
Well Crohnie, the English language is the English language, whatever part of the world you come from. And this is not about pronunciation at all. It’s about adding a letter that does not exist in how Miss Emma spells her name. Any way you look at it, it’s improper English...if that’s how they do things in the world where this is filmed, then so be it.. But I’m just saying, it’s not correct and plain annoying..my Name is Marianne not Marianner, To add an r to my name would be disrespectful. Just my opinion.😊
Sad many morons think names are pronounced the same everywhere
No woman bones over 12 days later someone miss counted
