  • One of the common issues my students have with American English placement is, even if they produce sounds from the right area, the sound can still be stiff, stilted, or tense. If this sounds like a problem you have with placement in American English and you are looking for techniques to increase the flow of air and breath through your throat, then these 10 techniques may be just the thing to sound more natural, relaxed, and resonant!

    Hey Geoff, another great video! I think especially the last tip could be quite helpful to me. I noticed that some sounds are coming out more naturally. Even for the light L, I don't need to touch the top of my mouth. Do you also speak most of the time with the front of the tongue forward, behind your lower teeth?

    • @FluentAmerican
      @FluentAmerican  Před rokem

      it's hard because it's not something I'm constantly paying attention to, but in all honesty, I think most light L.s could be replaced with dark Ls if you wanted. Thank you!

    I watched your all placement videos and have been practicing for a long but I find it harder to get when I let my voice go lower it turns out to be scratchy like a spoiled radio. my voice started shaking inside as if I were sick, Can you suggest sth, please?

    • @FluentAmerican
      @FluentAmerican  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Shumaila! Thanks for the support and question!
      That "radio" effect you mention sounds like what is called a vocal fry-- your throat can actually be relaxing too much! The last step at the end of this video may actually be helpful--try holding a vowel sound for a few seconds, and as you notice that "scratchy" sound, push the tip of your tongue gently against your bottom front tooth.
      Also, it could be that we are forcing the sound a bit too low as well; if you project from a slightly higher place, do you notice the issue as well?
      Feel free to send me a voice message on Instagram or email a voice message with vocaroo!
