  • While the Sound Devices 833 is my usual recorder, I talk here in this video about the importance of having back up equipment.
    A few corrections (am sure there are more! Please comment below if you spot any more errors):
    @9:12 I say 833 instead of Maxx
    @11:15 I say I am the only person using Sony BPU60 batteries in New Zealand, but I of course mean the only Soundie... Not only person! They are very very popular with Sony camera shooters after all. (Sony FX6/FX9/FS7 use them. Plus of course my own Sony PMW-F3 uses it! Is why I first started out using Sony BP60 batteries for my Sound Devices 552 bag. These BPU batteries have been around for a long time, the old Sony EX1 / Sony EX3 used them as well. Note that the BPU60 and the Sony NPF970 are two quite different batteries, even though they look very similar. And the NPF series of batteries are super common for powering accessories & LED lights)

      Its also always funny when you come across posts that you have made and completely forgotten about years prior, and read the post before realising it was yours. lol

      yeahhhhh..... I took a very very loooong "break" for various reasons, mostly just because of lockdowns which kinda depressed/frustrated me. And once you stop uploading, it's pretty easy to just stay stopped. It's simply basic Physics! Newton's First Law of Motion: "A body remains at rest, or in motion at a constant speed in a straight line, unless acted upon by a force"
      But anyway, we're kinda-ish back to "normal" now? Well, yes and no, especially not after what happened last month. That's been hard mentally. But ah well, life keeps on finding a way to carry on forwards anyway.

    Hello, it's a really informative video to me. Thanks. Anyway, I have questions. So, what points in 833 do you think is much better than Maxx?And One more question, are you using dwx 2nd gen? What case or battery solution are you using for it, and are you using AES or analog? Actually I use it and Maxx as well. Hum i have tons of questions to you, but next time(if I have another chance.) Thanks!!

      Glad you found it informative!
      Benefits of the 833:
      833 has triple media it is recording to, doesn't use/need MARF
      833 can do more channels of audio.
      833 has an app
      833 is massively better than a Maxx when used on a sound cart, can be used with control surface(s)
      833 interface is better
      And more and more
      Am using BP-U60 batteries (I mention it at @11:09), not what I'd recommend... unless you're also using Sony cameras! (I was focused on the camera dept when I first started getting into sound recording, and purchased my Sound Devices 552. Already owned a Sony PMW-F3 with a bunch of BP-U60 batteries, thus it was natural to use them to power by bag!) I do want to "upgrade" to eSmart batteries, "one day".
      Yeah, that's their 2nd gen, I want to go for either 3rd gen or perhaps go for Shure Axient Digital as that would be my dream (except, they don't have a Shure ADX3!! That's what I want). Still on the fence as to if I'm sticking with this or not, has its downsides.
      You're a Maxx user too? Nice! There are not tonnes of Maxx users, certainly far more using the Nomad or Nova. Am thinking about perhaps bringing out the Maxx again this weekend. Maybe.
