She’s not wrong. She was trying to convey America’s feelings about Ireland on that Question Time programme - the Brits have a huge tendency to forget about the strong links between Ireland and America - primarily because the Brits were the architects of the famine. And where did the Irish who fled end up? America. It’s a self induced amnesia. And Bonnie was utterly correct in her points.

@Dragon Energy the famine was in 1847 - will/can the Irish (and plastic paddies) ever move on from that or is the joy of national self-pity just too great to avoid?

The Irish get parades all over the USA on the 17th of March every year. The largest annual parade in the world marches down Fifth Avenue in New York simply to honour the Irish and their massive contribution to the American nation. That same day the Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) is invited every year to an offical reception held in the White House by the American President. No other nation has that privilege and many of them are envious of the honour bestowed on the Irish. In places like Chicago and Boston they dye the rivers green in celebration of the Irish on 'Paddy's Day'. Only two leaders of their countries can pick up a phone at any time and get through directly to the US President. Ireland and Israel. Only Ireland and Israel. Since Britain's last invasion of someone else's country in 1956 and after the Yanks told them to withdraw and hang their heads in shame Britain became merely America's lapdog, reduced to merely propping up American foreign policy. So keep paying for NATO because the Irish won't. Keep pretending you have a special relationship with the Yanks like you keep pretending you live in a democracy with your unelected Head of State and your unelected Upper House of Parliament. You totally underestimate the importance of the Irish to America. The fact that Bonnie is not of Irish descent it totally lost on you.

@@timlinator Sadly the same here in England. Many Irish decent, only first generation born here ( like myself) and they have assimilated with almost the National Front element of this country taking a lead from the likes of Tommy Robinson. It wasn't that long ago the signs were in windows here with No Blacks, No Irish, No dogs. These racists don't like reminding of this. You'd be amazed how many wealthy Irish now support the Conservatives and Unionists. It's horrible to witness.
