- I learned a lot about book binding in college when I was getting my bachelor's degree and I figured it was time to put it to good use!
I'm finishing the last of my June and July commissions and then I'll be opening up commissions for August. If you might be interested please fill out this form and I'll try to get back to you asap!

i took a bookbinding class in college, but we learned the sewing method, where the pages are sewn with thread into bundles called signatures and the signatures are sewn together to make the text block before gluing everything into the cover, so it’s interesting to see how one would approach a glue-only way of bookbinding
I make so many notebooks and sketchbooks and I do this method with the sewing
I learned the sewing method on my drawing classes! Honestly I didn't learn much drawing on that class but making sketchbooks myself saved so much money and I could choose the paper I liked :)
You're talking about coptic bound? I've always wanted a coptic bound journal they're so cool
a tip i got when learning to book bind is if your box cutter isn't extremely sharp, you'll probably end up tearing some of the edges when cutting them, meaning the surface won't be perfectly flat. this can be solved by putting the pages between ruler and clamps again and sanding the edges down. just put some sandpaper over a wooden block and go to work. it takes a long time, but it's worth it.
Bookbinding has been my passion for the past few months and I'm so glad to be a part of this bookbinding community. It's awesome and a very rewarding skill set to have
The only way I could make myself try mixed media "art journaling" was to make my own sketchbook out of random stuff I had lying around (stock paper, shoebox, old wallpaper samples, and a thin yarn I'd inherited) so it was free and also already pretty ugly since it was the first book I bound with signatures and hardcover. Pro tip for those who don't think their art deserves fancy store-bought sketchbooks!
I thought that said a thin yam and I was so confused 😭😭 I was like "y'all putting yam in your sketchbooks???"
@@_.-._.-. Hahaha! Mmm, sounds delicious if a bit messy... xD
Art!! I'm gonna need to do this one. This is very useful to know how to do.
I legit love doing stuff like this. Making by hand sketchbooks is so fun!!!
Considering my finances, I almost exclusively draw in Dollar Tree sketch pads. Therefore, when you said the paper was flimsy, I couldn't help but think that it was funny, since it's the good quality sketch pad they have. Usually, I get one of those 60 sheet ones. Flimsier paper (and made for kids), but more pages.
This skill is so useful, I didn’t find any videos on this so I just reverse engineered my sketchbook and got a less nice version of this :’D I’m gonna use this tutorial next time though!!
I actually learned how to make my own books last year :D i never use the ones I made but they're so fun to just,, have.
thanks for bee-ing xD one of my gate way's into art when i was in middle school echo
Nothing better than a tutorial that uses dollar store materials but looks great in the end!!!!
been watching u for years, still making AWESOME MAGIC CONTENT!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so glad I'm back to see your channel watching art reminds me of you. YAH!
this is really useful thank you! time ago I made some sketchbooks but I used hard paper gift bags for the covers
I can empathize with the sweaty sweaty part. My air conditioner went out last night, and the heat index today is supposed to be 112°. My family and I said no thanks and checked into a hotel until the ac repairman can come.
I remember making books with you!! I believe we still have a few around. Miss you
ooooo clever use of the book canvas! sometimes dt has bone folders too
this is such a good idea! i might try this 🤔
You could add a black leaf shape to one side of the rose to center the design more. That’s what I’d do
I reeaaallyy like you're videos they make me soo happy :'))) And I will definitely try this !!! ❤
Yesss I loved exploring book binding in school. I even bought a bone folder and the special binding glue
One part of my job can be folding up to 50 papers 5 days a week. If you have clean nails and its printer paper. You can use your the flat part of your nails.
Echo! It has been so long since I have watched your channel! I remember 5 years ago I watched your sketchbook tour with your Chewi bunny in it (I forgot how to spell its name so forgive me if I spelt the name wrong)… But today I finally decided to come back to your channel because I just had the two colours black and red in my head and who other than Dennis The Menace would come into mind but you!
I kid you not, i bought that exact sketchbook from the local dollar tree just a few days ago :0 now i know what to do with it.
"I LIED! :D welcome to youtube :| " hahha so true tho. i love crafts like this, so relaxing and low pressure!
"relaxing and low pressure" is what i thought i'd think of this before finishing the video but I dunno man watching this i'm like... i bet this craft would frustrate the heck outta me, so many chances for my perfectionism to get me an ulcer 😅
This is really cool, and the kind of thing I think would be great to do, but then it takes so many things and time, I think meh, just buy things. My kitten loves those foams on sticks too, for ripping to pieces. All foam and sponge, all now safely in a drawer.
echo, about 5 years ago in dec 2016, i met my best friend in the comments of your video! i thought i should let u know.
This is a very echo project... idk how else to word it haha
this is so cool! I'll have to try it the next time I go to the dollar store!
nice ill make a necronomicon sketchbook for sure
Well this seems like a skill I will actually use! Sugoi!
oh! i completely forgot about book binding as something I can just...do! Thank you for the reminder. I did this once in college but a more simplified version. I'm going to have to try it your way soon! Might make a video "following this tutorial" or something
Tour stunning echo beautiful video love you echo
This is so helpful, especially for folks with low budgets
@EchoGillette I got my BFA in graphic design. There was a book binding workshop through my degree program, but it was a bit intimidating to me at the time. I ended up taking another binding type class through our schools library, but it was much more focused on smaller bits of paper and attaching through sewing vs glue. Now that I have more design experience and a packaging class under my belt since that first book binding workshop, I defiantly want to try this.
I LOVE YOU ECHO!! IVE MISSED YOU
quite a glorious channel!! thanks for this!! you are awesome.. thanks for sharing.
ATTENTION!!! - make your own actual animated show I just watched your Tim burton and sis the fact that you can literally replicate someone’s art that precisely is amazing like I’d watch a Disney film of yours if you did an animated anythinggggg
I LOVE THIS
Echo: "the cuts may not be straight."
Me: hehehe... I'm not straight
Me neither
Mood
I'm so glad you made this video because I was thinking about doing this for the past month and was wondering how to go by it with only dollar store stuff! 😅
Since you said you have made many in your life, what was your favorite sketchbook you made like? Do you still have it?
**casually puts this in a to-do in the near future list**
Echo flexing at 5:32
i rlly wanna do this now omg
Such a cool idea!!! ❤️🖤
Thts so cool ive got to try tht
THIS ISN'T VERY IMPORTANT BUT
I have that exact same sketch pad my step mom got me that I haven't drawn in because I don't trust non spiralbound sketch pads anymore
I learned this in college too!
I’ve book bound before and I used cardboard canvas for my covers. It was really hard to cut with sizzors do use box cutter XD
(I did a more tome method- Look up “making elmental tomes” great series. I did it that way)
Cool! 😎
i got some fantastic grey paper for charcoal but i am so worried i will make an oops so i will try with some of the old dollar store sketch books i have bc i have what seems like infinate amount of em
I often wish to be freed of my spine
I tought myself how to sew text blocks for my sketchbooks! I'm really hard on sketchbooks so I tend to need the extra durability.
Personally, I find bookbinding eases my anxiety. The only bad part is I ended up several blank books.
2 videos is a week 😁😁
Can u do a house tour of ur little home? :3
Am I contemplating using the random canvas board I found in my stuff the other day to make a mini diary? Yes.
Do I have time for such a project that I have never in my life attempted to do? No.
Am I gonna blow off work to do it anyway while my ADHD gremlin brain chants 'NEW CRAFT! NEW CRAFT! NEW CRAFT!' in the background? .... Probably. XD
1 small leaf and no one will ever know the rose wasn't center
Hi, yes, where was this video a month ago when I was trying to do this very thing? /j
But seriously, this is really useful, thank you!
Will you make more diy videos ?
what do you recommend as the ideal number of pages?
I honestly thought the rose was a patch 😅
I always wanted to try bookbinding, but all the stuff i saw had all these professional materials and crap. :/ good to know these materials are cheap! I thought sewn pages were a requirement for ages.
one thing i hate about those sketchbook is that i always rip
I've been trying to find a B5 blank 160 GSM notebook to use for bullet journaling, and they don't make them. Archer and Olive doesn't have them blank and searching the internet, I'm always SOL, so I may try this and just make it myself, then maybe I can make it with enough pages for an entire year. Any advice?
notif squad😩
Omg
Notification squad :)
Helpful bc my dog chewed my $1 sketchbook cover
I had a book binding phase at like age 13 lmao
notification squad!!
I'm early!! Hiii
Please be a bit more aware of the waste involved with creating art. The foam brushes are cheap. But disposable culture is ruining our environment.
Also paint and glue water should actually be captured separately and not washed down the drain.
These are tough conversations to have as artists cause we just want t create. But our planet is dying, we should all do our part.
